Vocabulary. Comprehension. The National Fluency Challenge QuickReads ®: The Proven Fluency Advantage The biggest obstacle to proficient reading for most U.S. fourth graders is fluency. QuickReads ® is a research-based and classroom-validated program that systematically increases fluency, builds vocabulary and background knowledge, and improves comprehension. Through a unique combination of text and consistent instructional routine, QuickReads ® results in improved reading proficiency for students at all ability levels. Why? Because most struggling readers spend most of their time and energy trying to recognize even the most common words, thus forgetting the content of what they are reading. They primarily focus on decoding. By contrast, fluent readers read with ease and expression. They recognize words automatically and make connections between what they are reading and what they already know. They focus on comprehension. Fluency—the ability to read a text accurately, quickly with proper expression, or prosody—provides the bridge from decoding to comprehension. For students to achieve reading proficiency, they must be able to combine the fundamental skills of word recognition and comprehension successfully to ensure that they can think critically about what they read. Research demonstrates that students can build a solid fluency foundation through instruction that: ◆ Provides multiple oral reading opportunities. ◆ Applies a consistent comprehension strategy. ◆ Supports students in making connections between what they are reading and what they know. ◆ Provides expressive models of fluent reading. Research demonstrates that students build a solid fluency foundation with QuickReads®. Available in both dynamic print and technology editions, students using QuickReads ® and QuickReads ® Technology Edition have the advantage of using an effective program that lays the groundwork for successful reading. And through companion programs designed to afford students more time with text, QuickReads ® Fluency Libraries and QuickReads ® Become an Expert enable students to extend their knowledge as they continue their journey to becoming fluent readers. QuickReads ®: ◆ Builds reading success quickly and systematically with a unique, research-based text model. ◆ Creates strong readers with a proven, consistent instructional routine. ◆ Creates a stimulating, interactive learning environment with advanced, speech-recognition technology. ◆ Heightens background knowledge through companion programs designed to afford additional time with accessible text. Hiebert that explores the role text plays in developing fluency. According to Dr. Hiebert’s research, both instructional strategies and type of text are important contributors to fostering student fluency development. Nationally, research studies have clearly demonstrated that use of QuickReads® print and technology helps close the achievement gap and enables students to meet or exceed performance standards. QuickReads® ensures that children simultaneously develop the critical benchmarks of proficient reading as identified by the National Reading Panel (2000): • Fluency • Vocabulary • Comprehension • Background Knowledge. Developed by the Experts Dr. Elfrieda (Freddy) H. Hiebert, researcher and author of QuickReads®, is currently Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. She has worked in the field of early reading acquisition for 40 years and has published more than 130 research articles, chapters in edited volumes, and books on how instruction and materials influence reading acquisition, especially among low-income students. Professor Hiebert’s model of accessible texts for beginning and struggling readers—TEXT—has been used to develop several reading programs, including QuickReads®, the QuickReads® Technology Edition, and Ready Readers®. Her current work focuses on the difficulty of current beginning-reading textbooks and on the design of appropriate curricula and texts for English language learners. 24 Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams, Chief Scientist of Soliloquy Learning Inc., is internationally regarded for research and applied work in the area of cognition and education. Recipient of the American Educational Research Association’s Sylvia Scribner Award for outstanding research, Dr. Adams’ contributions include the landmark book Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning About Print (MIT Press). QuickReads® Technology Edition is powered by Soliloquy Learning’s speech-recognition technology — founded on Dr. Adams’ research and developed with her leadership. Dr. Adams is cited in the 2000 Politics and Education Yearbook as one of the five most influential people in the national reading policy arena. RESEARCH AND AUTHORSHIP QuickReads®: Proven Effective The Research Demonstrates…Consistent Gains in Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary with QuickReads®. In 2006, a study was conducted by The Great Plains Institute of Reading and Writing (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) with 1,484 students in grades two through five of all learning abilities (below-, on-, and above-grade level), including English language learners. The study assessed students with pre- and post tests at the beginning and end of the intervention period to determine effectiveness. The results of this study demonstrated that: 1. In all domains students receiving QuickReads® instruction had higher growth in oral reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary than those students receiving regular classroom instruction. 2. QuickReads ® is an effective strategy for all students in 2nd grade through 5th grades regardless of their pre-test reading ability. 3. The use of technology in teaching reading fluency further accelerated student gains for the majority of students. 4. In the area of comprehension, the gains over the control group were significant. The Research Demonstrates…The Power of Technology in Closing the Achievement Gap In her research chapter, “The Promise of Automatic Speech Recognition for Fostering Fluency Growth in Children and Adults,” Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams outlines the findings of her 2006 Framingham, MA, efficacy study wherein fluency gains for students using the technology edition of QuickReads® far exceeded those gains among students in the control group. In a brief 17-week study in which actual reading time as measured by the software was, on average, only 8 minutes per session, Dr. Adams explains: “In our study of grade 2–5 classrooms, those using QuickReads® Technology for about 20 half-hour sessions showed remarkable growth in fluency. Their gains surpassed norm-based expectations by as much as 40% or nearly half a school year.” Dr. Adams’ study demonstrates the important contributions technology can make towards closing the literacy gap when it is properly integrated into classroom instruction. *Assessed by DIBELS †Assessed by Gates-McGinitie Reading Comprehension ‡Assessed by Interactive Reading Assessment System – Rev. (IRAS-R) For a more detailed review of these and other efficacy studies, please refer to The QuickReads® Research Compendium, which can be found under the Pearson Research Evidence Series on the Pearson website at www.pearsonschool.com. 25 RESEARCH QuickReads® and Response to Intervention (RtI) The recently reauthorized IDEA law requires that states must permit districts to adopt alternative models such as the Response to Intervention (RtI) model rather than simply identify children with special needs. The RtI model proposes that earlier prevention and intervention through data-based decision making will result in fewer children identified for special education classes. QuickReads® is an appropriate and effective solution for students in all tiers of intervention: Tier 1 – Provides active fluency instruction as part of a good, solid reading curriculum for all students. Tier 2 – Provides additional, targeted, small-group intervention for students demonstrating gaps in reading rate, accuracy, or comprehension. Tier 3 – Provides additional strategic, intense, and sustained small group (or individual with the Technology Edition) intervention at least twice a week for students who are more significantly delayed. RtI calls for student performance data to be gathered easily and frequently so that the effectiveness of the instructional strategies being used can be readily ascertained. Based on the extensive performance data available from QuickReads ®, modifications in teaching and learning models can be made, as necessary, in order to ensure student progress. Easy-to-access performance monitoring reports from any networked computer can inform instructional decisions. 26 CONNECTED INSTRUCTION Support Beginning Readers with the Research-Based Pre-Fluency Program — Ready Readers® A Beginning Literacy Program with a Built-in Phonics and Word-Study Curriculum Researched and authored by Dr. Elfrieda H.
