From The
Lodge President
Carrol T. Juven
Congratulations! Since January 1, you have
added 128 new members, including both adult and
youth. Our duty, as members, is to provide for the
future of Sons of Norway through the addition of new members both
locally and internationally. Therefore, we must continue in our efforts. We are continuing our membership promotion. All members who sign
up a new member, as well as the new member, will receive a copy of
a beautiful Norwegian cook book, during the month of August. It is
easy! Ask a friend, or family member, to join!
I am happy with all the activities and efforts that make membership
in Sons of Norway so special. The choir, the accordion band, NorSweDane Dancers, and all the cultural programs, crafts and cuisine, make
our lodge one of the most active and appealing organizations anywhere
to be found! Our fellowship is fun, and our food is fantastic! (And,
according to The Forum, clean and safe, too! Thank you for your attention to the little things that make all the difference!) It all ties together. Volunteers and staff, members and guests – while enjoying the present,
we are preparing for the future of Sons of Norway.
Our August 1 lodge meeting will be conducted by Vice President
Dan Haglund. Election of a 2014 nominating committee is on the
agenda. We need several new officers to serve in 2014. Come to the
lodge meeting and make your voice heard!
We are presently working on an awards night and the cultural programs
for fall and winter. I am counting on every member to work on committees, programs, and events. We need your talent, and your presence,
to make our operation work smoothly. Thank you, everyone, for your
contribution!
Thank you for your continued support!
ATTENTION
There will be a Sunday Dinner Team meeting
on Friday, August at 12:30 pm. We really need
more teams as Sunday dinners are an important
part of our klub. Whether you can head up a team,
peel potatoes, waitress, help with prep work, cashier, make or serve coffee, etc...we need YOU for
this to be successful. Please come and join us.
Thank you!

Kringen Youth Klubb does not meet during the months of July and August;
therefore, we have no news of Kringen Youth activity at this time.
Kringen Lodge was represented in the Children’s Activity Center at the Scandinavian
Hjemkomst Festival in June. Norwegian crafts and activities
were planned for all children
attending the festival. We had
a turn-out of about 100+
children during the two day
festival. We were kept quite
busy and at times, some adults
were involved making the
crafts, also.
The other Scandinavian
cultures also had activities
representing their respective
countries. The children area
also had a wonderful Norwegian story teller who could tell
a troll story that would even
make an adult shiver! The
children’s activity center at the
festival is a great place for the
Youth busy with activities in Children’s Center at kids to learn as well as to have
fun “hands on”!
the Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival.
Kringen Youth Klubb will resume their regular meetings and activities
Saturday, September 14 in SON Ballroom, 10:00 am – 12 noon. Circle your
calendars now! New members are always welcome.

KRINGEN POSTEN - august 2013
Cultural Corner
Ivar Andreas Aasen, Norwegian
Philologist, Compiler of
Dictionaries and Poet
Aug. 5, 1813-Sept. 23, 1896
Two hundred years ago this month, Ivar Aasen was born on the Aasen farm in Ørsta, in the district of
Sunnmore, on the west coast of Norway. His father, a small peasant-farmer named Ivar Jonsson, died in 1826.
Ivar was raised to become a farmer, but he spent all his leisure time in reading. When he was eighteen, he
opened an elementary school in his native parish. He taught himself the elements of Latin, the first of many
foreign languages that he mastered. Gradually, by patience and concentration, the young peasant became
fluent in many languages and began the scientific study of their structure. Ivar single-handedly created a new
language for Norway, a language that was not influenced by Danish like the then “official” Bokmal Norwegian
language. He continued his language study by concentrating on the dialect of his native district, Sunnmøre. His
first publication was a small collection of folk songs in the Sunnmøre dialect (1843). Quite early in his career,
he began to receive a national scholarship grants that allowed him to give his full attention to his Norwegian
dialect investigations. The Storting, Norway’s Parliament, conscious of the national importance of his work,
treated him in this respect with more and more generosity as he advanced in years. His Grammar of the
Norwegian Dialects (Det Norske Folkesprogs Grammatik), published in 1848 was the result of a great deal of
work and of journeys taken to every part of the country. He usually traveled on foot on those visits so that
he could converse with the local people in their native dialects as he traveled. Aasen’s famous Dictionary of
the Norwegian Dialects (Ordbog over det Norske Folkesprog) appeared in its original form in 1850 and from
this publication dates all the wide cultivation of this popular language in Norwegian. Aasen constructed,
out of the different materials at his disposal, a popular language or definite folke-maal (people’s language)
for Norway. By 1853, he had created the norm for utilizing his new language, which he called Landsmaal,
meaning “country language” or “language of the country-side.” With certain modifications, the most important of which were introduced later by Aasen himself, this language ia commonly called Nynorsk (“New
Norwegian”).
As established by law and governmental policy, there are two official forms of written Norwegian languages – Bokmål (“book language”) and Nynorsk (“New Norwegian”). The Norwegian Language Council is
responsible for regulating the two forms, and recommends the terms “Norwegian Bokmål” and “Norwegian
Nynorsk” in English. Two other written forms without official status also exist. The major one being Riksmål
(“national language”), which is somewhat closer to the Danish language, but today is to a large extent the
same language as Bokmål. It is regulated by the Norwegian Academy, which translates the name as “Standard
Norwegian”. Thus, Norway is the only country in the world, to my knowledge, that has two official languages, - and they are both Norwegian! There are other countries who have two official languages, but they
do not belong to the same language group.
There is no officially sanctioned standard of spoken Norwegian. The majority of the Norwegians speak
their own dialect in all circumstances. The spoken language in East Norway can be regarded as a de facto
spoken standard for Bokmål because it adopted many characteristics from Danish when Norway was under
Danish rule. This so-called standard østnorsk (“Standard Eastern Norwegian”) is the form generally taught to
foreign students and the Norwegian language that is taught at the Kringen Lodge. Denmark ruled Norway from the 16th to the 19th centuries. During that time, Danish was the standard written language of Norway. As a result, the development of modern written Norwegian has been subject to strong controversy related to nationalism, rural versus urban discourse and Norway’s literary history.
Historically, Bokmål is a Norwegianised variety of Danish, while Nynorsk is a language form based on Norwegian dialects and opposition to Danish language influences.
Aasen composed poems and plays in the composite dialect to show how it should be used; one of
these dramas, The Heir (1855), was frequently acted. In 1856, he published Norske Ordsprog, a treatise on
Norwegian proverbs. Aasen continuously enlarged and improved his grammars and his dictionary. He lived
very quietly in Oslo (then Christiania), surrounded by his books and shrinking from publicity, but his name
grew into wide political favor as his ideas about the language of the peasants became more and more the
watch-word of the Norwegians who wanted to separate from Swedish control and become an independent
nation. Aasen did not live to see this historic event which occurred in 1905. In 1864, he published his definitive grammar of Nynorsk and in 1873 he published the definitive dictionary of that language.
Aasen holds a unique place in linguistic history as the only person who has invented, or at least selected
and constructed, a language which has pleased so many thousands of his countrymen that they have accepted
it for their schools, their sermons and their songs. He died in Christiania on 23 September 1896, and was
buried with public honors.
Because they spoke the various dialects of their home community in Norway, the Norwegian immigrants in America were very well aware of the linguistic work of Ivar Aasen. A monument in honor of Ivar
Andreas Aasen was created by the well-known sculptor, Paul Fjelde and today stands on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead. A photograph of the Aasen Monument is included with this article. On the
5th of August, the 200th birthday of Ivar Aasen, a wreath is being placed at the base of the Aasen Monument
at Concordia College. Lynne Rommesmo is in charge of that ceremony on August 5th. If you want more
information about the wreath laying ceremony that day, please contact Lynne at 280-1674. You are encouraged to attend the wreath laying. Verlyn D. Anderson, Cultural Director
KRINGEN POSTEN - august 2013
Ivar Aasen Wreath Laying
Tuesday - August 5th at 6:00pm.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of
the birth of Ivar Aasen Kringen Lodge will lay
a wreath at his bust on the Concordia College
Campus. On the same day wreaths will also be
laid on four busts of him throughout Norway
and on his grave in Oslo. He is best known for
developing Nynorsk one of the two official
languages of Norway. Dr. Verlyn Anderson’s
Cultural Column this month gives more information on this interesting Norwegian. Please
plan to come and help us celebrate.
For more information please call Lynne
Rommesmo at 280-1674 or 552-1302.

Kringen Lesering – Book Discussion Group
Kringen Lesering, Book Discussion Group does not
meet during the summer months. However, our September
selection is From the Hidewood: Memories of a Dakota Neighborhood by Robert Amerson. For those Kringen members
who are interested in reading ahead, our October selection
is Ole Bull: Norway’s Romantic Musician and Cosmopolitan Patriot by Einar Haugen and Camilla Cai, published by
the University of Wisconsin Press. These books are available
for purchase at Zambros in Fargo or you can check them out
from local public and university libraries. We have a limited
number of copies at our Kringen Library.
WalhalLa Tour
The Frostfire theatre trip was very enjoyable this year, thanks to ideal weather conditions! The “Music Man” actors were fabulous, and makes
one wonder just how come these local actors are so much better than what comes out of Hollywood! You have to see it to believe it! And the meal
served by the Frostfire people was also excellent. On the way back we drove by the former Nekoma missile control site, which has recently been
purchased by the Hutterites. Try to figure that one out!!
We also stopped to see the St. Stanislaus Cathedral at Warsaw, ND which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was awesome to see
the inside of that huge Cathedral, which was built by the Polish immigrants over a hundred years ago to seat over 800 people. It was like something
you would expect to see in Europe! It needed to be big, because in those days it was common among those immigrants to have families of l2 to l5
children, all living on a homestead quarter of land. The Cathedral caretaker, Irene Duray, gave us the tour which she does for many groups that come
from all over the country. The only complaint was that she should have used a loudspeaker because many could not hear her clearly. But just to view
the interior of that huge Cathedral and all the stained glass and paintings was an impressive experience!
Then of course we finished up the tour with our usual stop at the nice Grand Forks McDonalds. All in all it was a good trip and if there is
enough interest, we can repeat it again next year.

a little humor...
Sven and Ole went into the garbage hauling business.
All they had for a truck was Sven’s 1949 Ford pick-up
with the grain sides on it. They had just filled it to the top
and started out for the dump when they were stopped
by the police. The officer said garbage was blowing off
the top of their load and if they didn’t find a way of holding it down, he was going to give them a ticket. So, Ole
climbed up on top and laid down spread eagle on top
of the garbage. As they drove along, they passed under a bridge. Two Swedes standing on the bridge saw
this sight and one of them remarked, “Vell, vould you
look at dat!!! Somebody threw away a perfectly good
Norwegian.
