Dear Brothers, Sisters and friends of Henrik
Ibsen Lodge,
I am just back from Henrik Ibsen’s annual WeekEnd at LOV, and what a week end it was with temperatures
in the eighties. This year we filled all the rooms with Henrik
Ibsen members and their friends.
On Friday evening we had our September meeting
in our Home away from Home. Ken Johnson gave us a short
summary from the Membership Committee and he presented the Lodge with our new Henrik Ibsen Pin, which I
hope we all will wear with pride. During the week end Ken
sold 50 pins to the 57 guest, a pretty good result.
For those of you who were not at this LOV Week-End,
please call Ken and buy one, two or three only $5, 00 per
pin. The members also approved to go a head with an Henrik Ibsen “October Fest” on Saturday, October 27, More
about this in the enclosed flyer.
And now, on a more serious note, our editor Melody
Wubbenhorst is resigning her position as editor. Please
read the From the Editor section in this newsletter: Let me
know if anyone is able to fill this position.

It is such a beautiful time to take a ride in upper New York State with the autumn leaves changing colors and preparing for the snowy days of winter. So as I
travel up to the Land of the Vikings later this month, I plan
to take a moment to enjoy what nature has to offer.
As the ghosts and goblins come out to play we will be
just completing our District Fall Board Meeting. Your District Board of Officers have been working diligently developing guidelines and procedures securing future boards
what’s, when’s, and how’s. There are only two meetings
left to get it all done. We hope to make future board transitions as easy as possible. In addition we have not forgotten about our homework assignments from the 2006 convention. In Virginia Beach we will present the document
with the prices of hotels and convention centers across the
district, trying to compare where it would be more reasonable. Of course the biggest item is the host convention
committee willingness to do all the preparations. As a
member of convention committees in the past, I realize the
amount of work and follow-through it takes, especially the
last 6 months, dotting all the I’s and crossing all the t’s.
The board is also developing a “convention guideline and
procedure” to present to all lodges and/or zones thinking
of hosting future conventions. Both of these documents will
be informational documents and will not be part of the reports book.
Many things are celebrated in October. I would first
like to wish everyone a Happy Leif Erikson Day. It is Sons
of Norway Foundation month. Nomination committees
should be reviewing and presenting a draft of their slate
of officers. Plans for the installations are in the works. Halloween is just around the corner. Both my grandchildren,
Krystal and Andrew, will have their birthdays. BUT most
important, it is the deadline for your lodge to provide the
Leadership Training Phase82 session.
B. Berntsen, District 3 letter continued...
Just offering a final reminder – the deadline is October
31st for the district to receive funding from the International Board. I would like to encourage all of you again to
attend if your lodge has made their final arrangements. It
will help you to understand the inner workings of the district and the organization.
I truly enjoy reading all of the newsletters I receive. It
gives me insight to the lodges and I feel I have an understanding of the members by the activities or events
planned. In Sma Snakk, from Gateway to Florida Lodge, I
have been reading the articles from LTC Frank Morrison.
He is stationed in Afghanistan. Our other soldiers: Capt
Pete Johansen (Lillehammer Lodge) is serving in Kuwait,
and Larissa V. Foseth (Nordkap Lodge) is in Afghanistan.
Please keep our soldiers and all the soldiers serving overseas in your hearts and prayers. Just a reminder: if you
know of any member who is serving overseas in a war
zone, please contact me so the district and the international dues will be waived for those members.
There is exciting news. Oslo Lodge in Clay, New York
is being revitalized. The District Officers feel this is such
an important beginning for them after a long absence of
activity. If you are ever in the area (near Syracuse) please
contact Karin McCadam and the members in Oslo would
be delighted to welcome you to their meeting. They held
a membership dinner and community outreach last May. I
would like to thank Zone 4 Director Arnie Johnson for
working so closely with Karin and the members in Oslo
Lodge. His attentiveness made the difference. With membership as a main goal for the order, our reactivating an
ailing lodge is as noteworthy as creating a new one.
Zone 1 is gaining awareness of information and facts. It
is my pleasure to introduce Gene Bartow, our newest Financial Benefits Counselor. Gene lives in Manhattan but
his office is in Deer Park. Gene will be assigned to the following lodges: Henrik Ibsen, Huntington Station, Riverhead and St. James. Gene plans to attend the Henrik Ibsen

Lodge meeting on October 19th. Let us all welcome him.

Thank you for having contributed to our newsletter. Your
support has been important for the continuation of it.
Talking about the continuation of it...I am saddened and I
regret to inform you that I am renouncing my position as
editor starting January 2008. My program at work was
cancelled and I was thrown into a position that now has me
working 10-12 hour days. With my toddler waiting for me at
home when I finally get in the door, and a husband who
misses his wife, I’m having to10
give this duty up to keep them
happy. I pray and hope we find someone to replace me very
soon.
Scrapbooking Anyone?

Scrapbooking has become very popular in recent
years: There are Scrapbooking Conventions, cruises, and
weekend retreats It has been suggested that we have a
Scrapbooking weekend at Land o the Vikings.
I would like to know if there is enough interest in doing a
scrapbooking weekend up there. This would be open to
everyone, whether you are new to scrapbooking or
experienced. I will have a consultant there to show
newcomers how to scrapbook or give ideas to the
experienced. Please ask your family members and friends if
they have any interest (no commitment yet) to e-mail me at

A yoke….
Back in cowboy times, a westbound wagon train was lost and
low on food. No other humans had been seen for days, and then
the pioneers saw an old Norwegian sitting beneath a tree.
"Is there some place ahead where we can get food?"
"Vell, I tink so" the old man said, "but I wouldn't go up dat
hill and down de udder side. Somevun tole me you'd run into a
big bacon tree."
"A bacon tree?" asked the wagon train leader.
"Yah, a bacon tree. Vould I lie? Trust me, I vouldn't go dere"
The leader goes back and tells his people what the Norwegian
said, that they should not go there. The pioneers said, "Oh you
know those Norwegian people. They lie just for a joke. We need

...and those young at heart!
Orienteering is an outdoor activity which can be
thought of as a treasure hunt, only instead of jewels, the
object is to find orange and white markers called controls. It is an activity which requires the use of a highly
detailed map of the area and a compass to find your way
through a given course. Family groups, scout groups,
and seniors, all enjoy orienteering.
We will be holding the Challenge this year at all
three Long Island Orienteering Club meets (LIOC) to
enable a greater number of Sons of Norway members to
participate. The 1st meet was at Caumsett State Park in
Lloyd Neck on Sunday, September 30th. The second one
meets October 31st, and November is TBD..
Please identify yourself as Sons of Norway member when you register and select the YELLOW course in
whatever meet location and date you decide to participate in. The best time from all three meets as well as the
total number of Lodge members participating, will determine the winning Lodge. Registration for all three
meets is from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, course closes at 3:00.
The cost is $10 per meet which includes the orienteering
map of the park. $6 for state parks only.
Directions: Rte. 110 to 25 N (Main St.) Make left
and go 3 traffic lights to West Neck Road. Make a right
and take it all the way to the park. Beware, active patrolling!

So what’s going on over there
anyhow?
100-year railway commemoration. On October
9th 1907 it was 100 years since the railway line
from Bergen to Eastern Norway was completed,
when the last spike was driven at Ustaoset
station. Bringing the railway line across the
mountain passes from Bergen to Eastern Norway was regarded as a
technical achievement, and was a major factor in the development of the
regions along the line.
Oil&Gas: New merger of Norwegian companies. Norwegian oil
companies Pertra ASA and Det Norske Oljeselskap have announced a
merger, creating the second largest Norwegian operator after
StatoilHydro. The name of the combined company will be "Det norske
oljeselskap ASA".
Little Norway - RNAF training base in
Canada During World War II, the Muskoka
Airport, referred to as "Little Norway", near
the town of Gravenhusrst in Ontario, was used
as a training facility by the Royal Norwegian
Air Force (RNAF)
The National
Historic Sites and Monument Board of Canada has recognized "Little
Norway" in Muskoka as a National Historic Monument. The purpose of
the memorial building is twofold: To recognize the historical
significance of the Royal Norwegian Air Force training program in
Muskoka during WW II and to establish a new tourism attraction at the
airport.
Gold medals for Norwegian cooks.
The chefs of Norwegian national team came third
in the International Cooking Competition in Erfurt
Germany, after collecting altogether four gold
medals in the individual events.

Henrik Ibsen Membership Committee Update
October 2007
As many members already know, the Membership Committee
now has available “Come Join Us Posters”. Any member who
thinks they know of a good place for one should take one or
more. Just take what you can use.
Also the first ever Lodge pin is now available and for sale. We
hope that every member will purchase and wear the $5 pin
proudly. To date fifty pins have been sold, almost covering our
initial investment.
Lastly, thanks to Evelyn Hoey our Publicity Director, the “Sons
of Norway actively seeks new members” article in the local
news papers is working. We got our first inquiry and a letter
complete with application was sent. More details to follow at
our October meeting. We’re headed in the right direction...
let’s all keep it going.

except the leader who manages to escape and get back to the old
Norwegian.
Near dead, the man shouts. "You fool! Why did you ever mention
the bacon tree? The Indians killed everyone but me. We followed
your route and there was no bacon tree, just hundreds of Indians."
The old Norwegian man holds up his hand and says, "Vait a
minute."
He quickly picks up an English-Norwegian dictionary and begins
thumbing through it.

"OOF-DA, I made such a big mistake! My English is not so good.
It vuzn't a bacon tree, it vus a ham bush!"
From our Foundation Director

October is Foundation month and I'd like to make
Henrik Ibsen members aware of what is available to
them. There are Grants and Scholarships to schools in the
US and Norway. In addition, there is the Draxten Memorial
Fund, which is a matching fund that we use to help our
members children and grandchildren go to youth camp.
The local lodge could obtain info from the Foundation as
to how to form a scholarship for our
lodge. If you would like more information, please
contact me.
The Foundation does many wonderful things and
we should do what ever we can to support it.
Donations, Memorials and Tributes are a few of
the ways a member can donate to the Foundation.
We, also, as a lodge should make a donation,
which I will discuss at our next meeting.
