HENRIK IBSEN LODGE No. 393 share those with us. In the afternoon of May 4th, the Joint Zone Meeting, arranged by Norge Lodge was held at Belmont Park. We had a nice lunch at the Terrace Café. We observed the horses and placed some bets on them. Some of the members won a few dollars and others lost a few dollars. For the 29 members who made it to this Joint Zone meeting, it was a very pleasant afternoon. For the 17th of May Parade I believe there were some 28 people on the bus from Henrik Ibsen, plus some seven who joined us at the Parade. The bus was fifty minutes late arriving at the Park and Ride due to an accident on the LIE between Oyster Bay Expressway and 110. This cut some time off from a pleasant pre Parade at “Kopperfields”. With all of us being in a very happy mood the little rain that fell during the Parade did not dampen our spirits. Henrik Ibsen as in last year’s parade made a good impression with all our Norwegian Flags. I believe we had some 17 flags which gave us a 3rd place by the Judges at the Stand in Leif Erickson Park. At the end of the Parade, we quickly went to our favorite places of celebration being it the Diner, Swedish Club or the Danish Club. Personally, and many from Henrik Ibsen, went to the Swedish club for Lapskaus and more….. Next weekend, Labor Day week-end, Henrik Ibsen Lodge will participate in the Islip Memorial Day Parade, May 26th at 9:00AM. Moving to next month, namely Sunday, June 1 at 2:30PM; the Scholarship Fund Raiser at the Airport Playhouse, Bohemia, will be playing a comedy “Brighton Beach Memoirs”. At the Playhouse, the “Viking Ship Donation” to St. Marks Episcopal Church will be shown. Henrik Ibsen is responsible for the coffee during the break. On Sunday June 15, the Viking Ship will be presented to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church during the 11 o’clock Service. The Viking ship had unfortunately not arrived in time for the Memorial Service on May 4th. The next Lodge meeting will be June 20, at 7:30pm. Please do not forget, that Saturday June 21st is our Annual Fund Raiser, the Yard Sale at the Church. This being the last Newsletter this side of the summer, I wish you all a very Happy Summer, and please remember the BBQ at Larry and Monica’s August 9th. See you there! Asbjørn 1 We are having a Yard Sale on June 21, 2008 It starts at 10AM and ends at 4PM. We have a rain date of June 28, 2008. We need stuff!! This is one our biggest fund raisers. Gunnar’s wife said that he was 88 yrs. old, almost blind and suffered from dementia. He was also a little hard of hearing. I remembered Gunnar’s dry sense of humor, and he still has it. We talked for quite a while in the waiting room and he kept the other patients quite amused. Larry Lund reporter Har du hørt ?? We welcome Ken Schultz as a member of Henrik Ibsen Lodge. He’s attended his first two meetings and even joined Henrik Ibsen in Marching on Syttende Mai in Bay Ridge. We hope to see him a lot! As I’m sure you heard, Henrik Ibsen took third place in marching at the 17th Mai Parade in Brooklyn. Everyone looked good with their flags, even with the lodge “caboose” (Odd being pushed the entire parade route in his temporary wheel chair) At the recent Joint Zone Meeting at Belmont Race Track, 29 Zone One members attended (only three from Henrik Ibsen). A great time was held by all but the big winner was Margaret Lageraaen who won $148.00. The interesting point is that she wasn’t betting on the horse but rather the jockey. In the fourth race she bet on the jockey that won in the first race. Apparently she knows how to pick a rider. Asbjørn beware, she’s watching the moves of fast men. Well it is finally over, the bowling league that Odd, Larry and Ken belong too played their last game for the 07-08 season and wouldn’t you know it Larry bowls a strike with his last ball. We certainly hope he remembers in September how he did it so the team does better next year. Most importantly a lot of fun and øl was had by all. Even the cheerleaders, Monica, Renee and Bette had fun, even though they didn’t know they were supposed to cheer on their team………. the “Squareheads”. To all the delegates, “Thank You” for taking time from your busy lives. “Thank You” to all those who participated in the Leadership Challenge Phase II or Adopt A School Programs. “Thank You” to the Membership Committees in the lodges securing our future. To all the members of the Third District, “Thank You,” for supporting and believing in me, making these the best years of my Sons of Norway life. I have cherished the time we spent together. It truly is the SON family I speak about so often. The weeks in July when we all get dirty working at LOV, the anniversaries you allow me to share with your members, the meetings to visit, the installations with new revitalization, each zone doing their own programs, the chartering of new lodges, the conversations we have held, your thoughts which meant you cared, and mostly your dedication to the lodges and the order. You are what make this organization so great. This will be my last Fra Presidenten message and it has been an honor and a privilege to serve first as your District Secretary and now as your District President. There are many picnics, barbeques, and lobster fests planned over the summer, weekends away or holidays home to Norway, enjoy! I would like to wish everyone a safe trip to the Third District Convention and the International Convention. I know we will complete our business and have a great time. Hope to see many of you in Virginia Beach. Have a wonderful summer vacation! Barbara The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and the birds are singing the praises for the 2008 Convention Committee on the fine job they have done making this a cultural convention to remember. Wow! I can’t believe it is June. The District Board has been working hard to get everything done. We have written the reports, made the arrangements, and planned some cultural events during the sessions. We have 14 resolutions, some are duplicates, so we hope to have some free time to enjoy the beach, visit the Norwegian Lady, and benefit from each others company. There are some unique activities scheduled, informational reports to be announced, awards to be given, and surprises for some of the delegates, and the evening events will be a lot of fun. Chairman Verlin Morton and his committee have been working diligently to make the convention unforgettable. Please thank the members of the committee when you see them. There are approximately 130 delegates coming and I hope the delegates and guests are planning to take advantage of all the wonderful activities scheduled. If people would like to arrange any brainstorming get-togethers, let me know if you want me to join you. As all of the Districts and the International Board are preparing for their respective conventions, we have different opinions and different ideas. Debating these issues is why we attend, but I would like you to remember we are fraternal brothers and sisters. This is the business of the order and I have the utmost respect for each delegate’s views and hope all of you feel the same. Let us celebrate and have fun! June also brings one of our co-sponsored events. The Scandinavian American Heritage Society (SAHS) will hold their ‘Midsommer’ on June 21. There will also be a fun time at Scanfest on Sunday August 31. Both events will be held at VASA Park and you can visit their web site www.vasaparknj.com for all the details. It has been such a joy traveling around the district and I am glad I had the opportunity to attend as many functions as my schedule would allow. Your welcoming has made it all worthwhile. My goal for the last two years was to visit each Zone for a meeting and event. I am glad to say I have been successful in accomplishing my goal and thank the Zone Directors for making me part of your zone meeting and activities. The District Presidents Council (DPC) meets twice each year in Minneapolis. Together we share ideas and solutions to reach our membership goals. You will hear more about those at the convention. Serving as the DPC Secretary for the past four years has been rewarding and I have made wonderful friends across the country. Thank you: Audun, Ralph, Gail, Keith, Joe, Evelyn, Karen, Stu, Susan, John, Joan, Arnie, George T., Rannveig, George B., Roy, Helen, Joan, Luana Marie, Ken, Verlin, Bill, Peter, Margie, Bev and Rick, Ken, and Doris for all of the hard work you did over the past two years. I could not have done it without you. We have accomplished so much in the past two years. Be proud of yourselves! I know I am proud of you. You all deserve a big hug and can collect at convention. To the members of the convention committee, “Thank You” for volunteering for this very important job. To the delegates who agreed to be part of a 8 Parade Chairman's Message By KENNETH JOHNSON As the chairman of the Norwegian American 17th of May Committee of Greater New York, I welcome everyone to the 2008 parade. Our theme and supporting pin design this year is "Salute to Norwegian Explorers." Over many years Norway has hailed the famous explorers such as Leif Erikson, Roald Amundsen, Bernt Balchen and Thor Heyerdahl, to name just a few. With their adventurous achievements, America and the entire world has benefited from their accomplishments. This year we are privileged to have the renowned talk show host Mr. Barry Farber as our guest speaker. He has been a friend of the Norwegian community for years and we are extremely happy to have him to give us his message at our concluding ceremonies. Please remain with us at the grandstand to hear his views on Norway and Norwegian culture. I am proud to report that it is with great privilege that I was asked to be a judge at this year's Miss Norway contest at the Norwegian Christian Home and Health Center representing the Parade Committee. Once again it was a great success and her crowning will take place on the grandstand at the parade's conclusion. The committee and I congratulate this year's Miss Norway, Miss Sarah Lindland of Cornwall, New York. Besides being a beautiful blond, she is also a sophomore at Ithaca College studying to be in television and radio. On a personal note, it is with great pride and honor that I was asked to remain as general chairman for an additional year. With completing this, my fourth and final year, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity and privilege to serve and to lead the Parade Committee to yet another successful year. Once again it was only possible by the hard work of so many. My special thanks to the entire committee for their tireless dedication, specifically the three co-chairs and the various but necessary sub support groups. Because of their hard work, the Committee is able to organize and host a successful parade each year. With my work now complete as general chairman, I pass the gavel on to Jim Svendsen, another devoted Parade Committee member whom I'm sure will continue to lead the Committee in hosting many wonderful parades to come. I'll return to represent the Sons of Norway on the committee, assisting in whatever needs to be done so we all have a great parade each and every year. Tusen takk to everyone who believes in and enjoys Syttende Mai and the importance of what we do as a committee each and every year. One more time....As a proud Norwegian American, I ask that you....Say it often and say it loud, Hurrah for Syttende Mai!
