Pastor’s Message
April 3, 2016
Dear Friends in Christ:
Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô:
Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:
Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter (not the
first Sunday after Easter since Easter Sunday was the first
Sunday of Easter). The feast of Easter is so important that
we celebrate it for 50 days and it concludes with Pentecost
Sunday when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles.
Today is known also as Divine Mercy Sunday. When Pope
John Paul II canonized Sr. Faustina on April 30, 2000, he
declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be called Divine
Mercy Sunday throughout the Church. The concept of divine
mercy is not new. The scriptures are filled with the importance of God’s divine mercy. What is “new” is that we
have dedicated one Sunday to emphasize the truth of God’s
infinite mercy and the forgiveness of sins.
Though Pope John Paul II thought it was important to
emphasize divine mercy, Pope Francis also thought it was so
important that he declared this year to be a Jubilee Year of
Mercy. The reality is that we have such a difficult time believing in a loving, forgiving and merciful God. Maybe it is
the effects of sin and hurt that we struggle with, knowing we
hurt God, one another and others by our hurtful actions.
Maybe it is our experience that others do not forgive us all
the time, and we do not forgive ourselves that we struggle to
believe that God is willing to forgive us.
When I encounter people who wonder if God can forgive
them, I always speak about God’s forgiveness of Peter and
Paul. If Jesus chose both Peter (who denied Jesus three times
though he promised he never would) and Paul (who persecuted the early Christians) to both be great leaders of the
early Church, then Jesus can forgive our sins and allow us to
be part of the Church. How did Peter and Paul feel being
called to such leadership, knowing they sinned so greatly?
God’s mercy knows no limits and continues to this day. But
that truth must enter our hearts to be effective.
Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska (born 1905, died 1938 at
age 33) was a young, uneducated nun in a convent of the
Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland
Exposition of Blessed Sacrament, p. 11
Next Weekend: Loan Reduction Collection
during the 1930s. She came from a poor family that struggled during the years of World War I. She had only three
years of simple education, so hers were the humblest tasks in
the convent, usually in the kitchen or garden. However, she
received extraordinary revelations — or messages — from
our Lord Jesus, specifically about his divine mercy. Jesus
asked Sr. Faustina to record these experiences, which she
compiled into notebooks, known today as the Diary of Saint
Maria Faustina Kowalska, and the words contained within
are God's loving message of Divine Mercy. Throughout salvation history, God uses the ‘simple or lowly’ people as His
messengers. Sr. Faustina in her prayers came to understand
that a prayer of mercy was to be prayed. That developed into
what is now called the Divine Mercy Chaplet, using rosary
beads. If you desire to learn how to pray such a chaplet, refer
to p. 14 for directions to do so.
As I experienced the various Holy Week liturgies, I was
struck by the beauty and all the hard work of so many different people who made it possible. Thank you to the many
people who decorated the church so beautifully. Yes, there
were 2 people who master planned the flowers, but 50+ people worked Good Friday night and Saturday morning preparing the church. Thank you to all the altar servers (both
adults and younger). Thank you to all the language choirs
who rehearsed for so many weeks in advance. We are fortunate to have such talent in music. Thank you to the clergy,
sacristans, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and ushers (many who served multiple Masses),
those who make the altar cloths and clean the altar linens,
etc. Thank you to all of you who came for Holy Week.
Pray for our children in preparation for their First Holy
Communion, several adults and our teenagers in preparation
for Confirmation. Pray for peace and reconciliation in our
world and in our homes, for those who have lost jobs and
cannot find work. Let us always remember each other in
prayer for our respective needs!
Praised be the Sacred Heart of Jesus! Forever, amen!
Hãy chúc tụng Thánh Tâm Chúa Giêsu đến muôn đời, amen!
¡Alabado sea el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús! ¡Por siempre, amen!

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light
from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,
(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will
have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the
Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken
through the Prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. E
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look
forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the
world to come.
Amen.

p. 5
SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING
A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:
1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated.
2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in
—General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275
red words in the Creed).

Alleluia! Happy Easter from the Co-Cathedral Music Department!
Our choirs of all parish languages were pleased to offer extended music for Holy Week. If you enjoyed the
sound and are curious about joining us and learning more about participating in the liturgy in a more full way,
come sing this summer. During August we will resume our annual “Open Loft” where you can join the choir
for a day, or for as many summer Sundays as you wish. It is always a fun and educational time. Contact Dr.
Crista Miller, [email protected] if you’d like more information.
Music continues throughout the Spring and early summer, as we continue to celebrate this holy season. See
the box below for more information on our formal concert series, and watch this space for other periodic
offerings such as our continuing First Friday series.
Blessed Easter to you!

1. Has been baptized Catholic
2. Is completing at least one full year of CCE or Catholic
School AND will register, participate and complete their
second year of CCE or Catholic School in 2016-2017,
We invite you to consider having your child prepare for the
Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
beginning in the Fall. Registration Forms for these sacraments will be available beginning April 3, in the Narthex of
the Church and on the 3rd floor of the Cathedral Centre.
For your planning purposes: A copy of your child’s Baptism Certificate will be necessary for registration. Also

YOUTH CONFIRMATION
INFORMATION
Youth: If you are:
1. A Baptized Catholic that is already receiving the Sacrament of
the Holy Eucharist
2. AND currently in the 10th or 11th grade
3. AND are in the process of completing at least your second
consecutive year of formal systematic catechesis either
A. Here at the parish of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart
B. Or at a Catholic High School
4. AND you and your parents are members of our parish,
We would like you to begin thinking about the possibility of preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
This is the immediate preparation process just before the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. Knowledge of your Catholic faith and an ongoing personal and liturgical relationship
with God though both personal prayer and weekly attendance
and active participation in the Sunday Liturgy (Mass) are assumed in this process.
This process is totally separate and distinct from any CCE or
Catholic School formation you are receiving. Here at the CoCathedral of the Sacred Heart there is a specific registration
form for each of our “Immediate Sacrament Preparation” processes including the “Immediate Confirmation Preparation for
Youth”.
The registration form for this process will be available April 3,
both in the narthex of the Church and on the third floor of the
Cathedral Centre. The process itself will begin the weekend of
April 30-May 1 and will continue through December.
***Why notification now? Because there will be no registration
forms accepted without a copy of your Catholic Baptism Certificate, so you may want to start looking for it or ordering another
from the parish where you were baptized now. We are looking
forward to working with you! We hope you choose to join us.

2nd Sunday of Easter: April 3
That as disciples of Jesus, we answer the call to be grateful
and generous and look for ways to help those in need. “Jesus
said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent
me, so I send you.’” John 20:21 Peace – the first gift of the
risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world to
share His peace and Good News, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. We
should look for opportunities to share His peace with our
brothers and sisters not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, you will receive
the peace of Christ.

Christian Meditation
Wed. Evenings at 6:30 PM Parish Library
On the first floor of the Cathedral Centre.
Christian Meditation is not a study or discussion, but a weekly meeting of Christians coming together to silence their
minds/hearts and listen to the quiet voice of God speaking.
After a brief, pre-selected Christian message, participants meditate in silence
for about 20 minutes. Meditation is an ancient form of Christian prayer practiced by the saints, and religious communities throughout the world.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
How to Recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is recited using ordinary
rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is preceded by two
opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed
by a closing prayer.
1. Make the Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.
2. Optional Opening Prayers
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for
souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O
Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine
Mercy, envelop the whole world and
empty Yourself out upon us. O
Blood and Water, which gushed
forth from the Heart of Jesus as a
fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in
You!
3. Our Father
4. Hail Mary
5. The Apostle's Creed
6. The Eternal Father
Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and
Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ,
in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
7. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us
and on the whole world.
8. Repeat for the remaining decades
Saying the "Eternal Father" (6) on the "Our Father" bead
and then 10 "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (7) on the
following "Hail Mary" beads.
9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times)
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have
mercy on us and on the whole world.
10. Optional Closing Prayer
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury
of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not
despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

No necesitan experiencia, solo
quien ama comprende, espera, da confianza, no abandona, no
corta los puentes, sabe perdonar. Dios nos espera siempre, aún
cuando nos hayamos alejado. Él no está nunca lejos, y si
volvemos a Él, está preparado para abrazarnos. Jesús invita a
