four hour “Relay
For Life” event held
at the Campbell
Community Center
on Saturday and
Sunday raised over
$220,000. One of
the great things
about this relay
is 100% of the
proceeds benefit
the ACS.

Lawns that are brown and
driveways that are dusty are
getting to be familiar sights
during this drought, especially
during these hot summer days,
but one sight around town that
soon may not look like there’s
an exceptional drought going on
will be Campbell’s water-filled
percolation ponds.
Yet even though all that water
in the percolation ponds may look
like the drought is over, their
being filled is actually a sign of
just the opposite. The Santa Clara
Valley Water District, which
owns and manages the ponds,
began refilling them recently
to ensure that low groundwater
levels measured at 30 feet below
normal in parts of San Jose, and
near the threshold of concern in
Campbell, do not progress to land
subsidence.
“The plan is to try and fill
the Camden, Page, Sunnyoaks,
and Budd ponds, which is the
Page System,” explained Marty
Grimes, Supervising Program
Administrator at the Santa Clara
Valley Water District. “After
that system is full, we might be
putting some water into the Oka
ponds and McGlincy ponds on
the other side of the freeway.
Those are next to the Camden
ponds but on the other side of
the Creek, so they’re adjacent to
Highway 17.” The Camden ponds
are the three alongside Highway
17 off of Dell Avenue, the Page
ponds are the eight ponds along
the other side of Winchester
Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue,
and the Sunnyoaks ponds are off
of Sunnyoaks Avenue between
Emory and Kenneth Avenues.
Groundwater
recharging
to keep below ground aquifers
full so land doesn’t sink was the
reason for forming the Water
District in the first place, Grimes
notes. The process dams up water
at Lexington to be released into
creeks when needed, and the
water then feeds into ponds that
replenish ground aquifers, along
with piped-in water imported
from the Delta. The ponds fill one
by one, with one full before the
next begins filling, the way water
fills an ice cube tray. Water put
into the ponds gets purified as it
percolates down through gravelly
layers that filter it before it finally
gets pumped out.
“When
we’re
fully
functioning and all those ponds
are full, it can clean 150 million
gallons a day,” Grimes said. “To
put that into perspective, our
largest water treatment plant is
the Santa Teresa Water Treatment
Plant. Its capacity is 100 million
gallons a day.” The aquifer fed
by the Campbell ponds also
underlies and serves Los Gatos,
Saratoga, and San Jose, including
Downtown San Jose, which
doesn’t have any ponds.
Some might think with a
drought on, the water could be
better used for drinking than
preventing subsidence, but it
actually will end up in water
glasses. “Every drop that goes
into these ponds is going to our
water supply,” Grimes said.
Campbell gets both groundwater
and treated water from its taps.
The Water District will be
continuing to keep the ponds
full for the rest of the year. The
sight of the full ponds seems to
be making a lot of birds happy
at the moment, and may also
make a nice view for the Water
District’s Grimes himself. “I just
moved back to Campbell over the
weekend,” he said. “Just across
the freeway from the Camden
ponds.”

City Council, staff look into Super
Bowl 50 “Seven Day Fan Fest”
Super Bowl 50 may be
just seven months away, but
Campbell’s City Council gave
City staff the go ahead at its
Tuesday, July 7 meeting to
look into possibly holding a fan
fest for NFL fans, in hopes of
maximizing the time and money
spent in Campbell in association
with the huge sporting event
coming to Santa Clara’s Levi
Stadium this February.
A promoter approached City
staff on June 24 with the idea for
a Seven Day Fan Fest that could
bring 125,000 people a day to
Campbell’s Downtown the week
before the big event. According
to staff, the promoter identified
Campbell as a potential “Super
Community”--or officially NFLsanctioned location--for a multiday event with live music and
a plethora of food booths that
would bring sales tax benefits
and some street closures. Staff
were told the City of San Jose is
interested in possibly partnering
with Campbell for such an event.
With football fans set to be
filling Campbell’s hotels for the
big game, just how to entice them
to spend more of their time and
money in Campbell during their
visit was already being looked
at by City staff who want to
present Campbell as the “Hub of
Silicon Valley.” Among the ideas
under consideration were a Super
Farmer’s Market, a Super Fun
Run, and a Super Octoberfest.
While the Council were
told staff were not asking for a
decision on holding the event,
they did ask for, and receive,
permission to look further into
the proposal regarding details,
such as security, porta-potties,
and barricades, in order to come
up with a detailed proposal to
present officially.
The City Council had a mixed
reaction to the idea, with the size
and length of the event, as well
as the short time to prepare, the
biggest drawbacks. Police Chief
Dave Carmichael confirmed that
the scope of the event concerns
him, especially with plans already
in place promising Campbell
police officers’ help elsewhere
during the Super Bowl.
“When I hear the numbers
that were tossed around, we are
tapped out with our festivals now
at 30,000,” Chief Carmichael
said. “Could we do some kind of
small festival? Of course.” But
as for the Seven Day Fan Fest,
“That’s going to be extremely,
extremely challenging,” he said.
“With our limited staffing that

would be a huge undertaking, if
not impossible. When we do our
two big festivals a year, we use all
our resources.”

Cristina
pointed out that a Brazilian World
Cup Soccer win celebration held
in Los Gatos in 1994 strained that
city. “They tore Los Gatos up,”
he said. “This could be amazing
for us—or it could be terrible.”
Vice Mayor Jason Baker
agreed. “We can’t do 125,000
people,” he said. “We can’t do
seven days. Even a small event
we can’t get done alone, not
with our police officers doublebadged.”
“The hotels for that period
in Campbell are sold out,” said
Councilman Paul Resnikoff. “So
we have an opportunity to keep
those people here. I’m scared of
the ‘big’ part, but I definitely want
to leverage it,” he said of having
the Super Bowl in the area.

Fire Calls
Letter to the Editor
100 block First Street: An unknown suspect pried a portion of
one of the water tower support legs causing damage
1500 block Silacci Dr.: An unknown suspect forced entry into
victims residence and stole property. Victim arrived home and most
likely interrupted the burglary because the suspect dropped property in
the backyard when leaving.
800 block Steinway: a 17-year-old male suspect was intoxicated
and assaulted his father. Suspect was on juvenile probation and taken
into custody.
1700 block S. Bascom Ave.: A 26-year-old female suspect
slapped victim in the face. Suspect was extremely intoxicated.
2300 block S. Winchester: A man was contacted for fighting with
a male who fled. Suspect was yelling at the officers and refused to
comply with their orders which delayed their investigation.
100 block Shelley Ave: The unknown suspect egged the victim’s
residence causing damage to the paint. This has been an ongoing issue.
Winchester / Sunnyoaks: A man was contacted after he failed to
pay for his food. He was found to have an outstanding warrant for his
arrest and was under the influence of a controlled substance.
00 block Shelley Ave: The unknown suspect used an unknown
object to crack a window of the residence.
1800 block S. Bascom Ave: A man was contacted after causing a
disturbance at a business and found to have 2 warrants for his arrest.
200 block E. Campbell Ave: Suspect called 911 to report that victim suddenly spat on her without provocation. Upon review of surveillance video it was determined the suspect was actually the aggressor
and she threw a glass of water on the victim after victim attempted to
sit in a nearby chair.

Department
07/10/15 : Bascom and Camden.
Campbell Engine responded to
the report of a smoldering trash
can fire. Firefighters arrived to
find a trashcan had light smoke
coming out of it. A Valley Transit
Authority bus stopped and
discharged a dry chemical fire
extinguisher. Firefighters used a
water fire extinguisher to put out
the remaining fire.
07/10/15 : 701 Creekside Wy.
Campbell engines responded
to the report of a grass fire.
Firefighters arrived to find a
grass fire approximately ¼ of an
acre burning up a hill. The fire
was contained and extinguished.
Cause was determined to be an
unattended warming fire in the
homeless camp.
07/12/15 : 10071 Johnson Ave.
Cupertino engines and truck
responded to an inside smoke
investigation. Firefighters arrived
on scene to find a small 1 story
home with light smoke showing
out of the front door. Firefighters
extinguished the fire with a dry
chemical fire extinguisher. Using
thermal imaging, firefighters
found no signs of extension or
heat in the area.
Thanks to early conservation efforts, vast areas of prehistoric
redwoods have been protected from logging where they survive in our
State despite generations of an industrial economy. These redwood
forests are now under threat and help is needed if we want these ancient
trees to continue into the future.
Poachers are encroaching into protected government and private
land to steal the burls from these trees. By removing their protective
layers of bark, these ancient redwoods lay exposed to disease and pests
killing them quickly over time. The burls are sold to lumber mills
or craftsmen and this beautiful decorative wood is ultimately used to
create high end consumer goods. With the small number of rangers
available to patrol the vast acreage of the forest, the risk of getting
caught is limited. Worse yet, if convicted, current penalties can be
easily incorporated into the cost of doing business with minimal impact
on the profitability of this enterprise.
The California Federation of Women’s Clubs is asking for support
of California Senate Bill 288 which increases penalties of burl poaching
to include up to one year of imprisonment and imposes stiff fines on
poachers in the hopes of making those who would kill our redwoods
think twice before seeking this avenue for enrichment. While this does
not resolve the problem of catching poachers, it will reduce the spin of
the courtroom doors for those convicted of this offense.
We ask that Californians contact their State Assembly representative
to stand with the California Federation of Women’s Clubs to protect
our redwoods by passing Senate Bill 288.

A Campbell Cousin in Slapjack Hall
If you want to make
“Slapjacks”, the recipe from The
Old Confederacy Receipt Book of
1863 says, “Take flour, little sugar
and water, mix with or without
a little yeast, the latter better if
at hand, mix into paste and fry
the same as fritters in clean fat.”
However, if you want to make
a “Slapjack Hall,” you need
one very different ingredient, a
lady like Anna Marie “Annie”
Bascom, otherwise remembered
as “Grandma” Bascom.
When her husband, Louis
Hazelton Bascom, a young
Kentucky doctor, decided he
wanted to go to California, at first
Annie didn’t want to leave her
home and friends. But then she
dreamed that her husband, whose
asthma was worsening, died, and
she changed her mind. She woke
him up and told him they were
going.
That sort of generous
impulse is exactly what makes
Grandma Bascom a beloved San
Jose pioneer still remembered
today. She made the journey at
age 33 in 1849, with six children
aged two months to ten years, the
same way she would live in San
Jose--making the best of things.
“We came through the South
Pass in the Rocky Mountains
on the ninth of July, and I made
ice-cream for the whole crowd
of women and children, for we
found a bed of ice in a sheltered
place,” she said. Another time
she made plum pudding on the
trail, and singed her eyebrows
and hair trying to flame brandy.
The very first night that she
was to stay in the San Jose home
her husband had bought sight
unseen for them at the corner of
2nd and San Fernando Streets,
she had just befriended three
gentlemen on the boat bringing
her and her children from San
Francisco to Alviso. Hearing they
were without rooms on a night
pouring rain with the ground deep
in mud, she invited them to stay
with her family just as she might
have in Kentucky. Home turned
out to be a shock at first sight-two rooms with a loft, and a roof
that let water leak in and then
drain back out through the floor
planks. They all made the best of
sleeping on buffalo hides on the
floor and in the loft, hit it off, the
gentlemen stayed on, and a San
Jose institution was born.
With San Jose the new State
Capitol, and the First Legislature
meeting in town, there were more
people than rooms available.
Soon the Bascoms’ house was
full with their six children and
13 gentlemen boarders, all
legislators,
representatives,
ministers, and teachers. “Nobody
who came would go away,” she
said, and it was because she
was not only good at “making
people feel at home,” but she let
them help. Soon the gentlemen
lodgers were in the kitchen
cooking, washing dishes, roasting
coffee beans, fetching water from
neighboring houses, and one
made such delicious slapjacks,
the home was named “Slapjack
Hall” by one of her sons and
became known for them. “It was
as good as a play to see them help
me,” she recalled.
Life at Slapjack Hall
that exciting winter of the
first Legislature was full of
conversation, activity, parties,
and the music from Annie’s piano
that had been shipped out and was
the first in the area. “I never had
such an intellectual feast as in old
‘Slapjack Hall,’” she said later.
“The gentlemen who figured as
cooks in my kitchen were the most
intelligent and agreeable men
you can imagine.” Life was also
full of amusing happenings that
ended up as stories still around
today. When San Jose needed a
first church and first school, she
famously made one—by sewing
a tent from blue denim. She once
hired a young lady cook, who
was shocked that she was actually
expected to cook and refused to
do so. Another time she had a
party and baked an elegant cake
to “pass around in fine style.”
“I began by passing it to one of
the Spanish ladies and she took
the whole cake at one swoop,
wrapped it up in the skirt of her
gorgeous silk dress, and said,
‘Mucho gracias,’” an awkward
party hostess moment that meant
no cake for anyone else.
Many early pioneers passed
through Slapjack Hall as guests,
including some Campbells. That
isn’t surprising, since Annie
Bascom’s maiden name was
Rucker, and she was a cousin of
Campbell founder Benjamin’s
wife Mary. It’s fitting that the
street named for her husband,
Bascom Avenue, runs right by her
cousin’s town.

My dad, Dick Sgarlato started the
business out of the 76 gas station
at Camden and Bascom in 1957.
He became a AAA contractor in
1968 and in the late 70’s moved
the business to where we are
located now, at 888 Camden Ave
in Campbell. There we run a
fleet of 25 tow trucks and service
trucks and have an automotive
repair facility. Some additional
information you may find on our
website www.sgarlato.com. In
1990, my dad retired and turned
over the business to his four sons,
who currently own and operate it
today. Besides the AAA contract
for emergency road service, our
company has had long-standing
contracts with Campbell Police,
Los Gatos Police, Santa Clara
Sheriff’s Department and the
California Highway Patrol. Many
retired Campbell Police officers
that knew my dad have reached
out to us and will be attending the
memorial service. A celebration
of life, to honor and remember
him, will be held on Friday July
24th, 11am at Bethel Church,
1201 S Winchester Blvd. San
Jose Ca 95128, with a reception
immediately
following
the
service.

When
one
announces
they are a real estate agent, the
inevitable questions arise: How’s
the market?? How’s business???
And then, they usually have a real
estate story they want to share
with you. Whether it is theirs, a
neighbors, a relative etc. Being
a realtor since 1987, I too, have
a few stories that may be worth
sharing.
Right now the real estate
market is ‘hot, hot, hot” It is ‘on
fire”. How long with this last???
Prices are skyrocketing, interest
rates are very low, and there is
a shortage in inventory. Homes
are selling with multiple overbids
and with many pent-up buyers
waiting for a change. Sellers are
selling homes ‘as is’ and buyers
are risking the appraisal and
loan contingencies while their
competitors are purchasing with
‘all cash’ offers.
So now comes the 64K
question, is this a good time to
buy or sell?
The following are my
opinions
•
Without the crystal ball,
we can base our opinions on the
future by looking at the past.
•
Over the long term
Real Estate (especially in
Silicon Valley) has been a wise
investment.
•
Home ownership vs.
renting usually has far more
advantages.
•
The real estate market
is ever changing, a few years ago
practically everyone qualified for
a loan, until the banks took a big
hit and foreclosures became a
regular practice. Now qualifying
for a loan is becoming tougher
and more difficult to obtain. The
rates are low but qualifying can
be challenging.
•
Are we at the peak of
the selling market? One never
knows until it starts to decline.
Isn’t it better to sell while it is
still climbing than waiting to see
where the peak is?
•
Also an unknown, will
there be a tax change? Right now
Prop 13 and Capital Gain Tax can
be very advantageous. ( Next
time I will go into more details
regarding Prop 13 and Capital
Gain Taxes)
•
Living in the Campbell
Neighborhood has surpassed
in value especially this past
two years and the forecasters
are extremely optimistic for its
continued growth.
•
So, I guess my vote is
an overwhelming YES, it’s a
great time to be in the real estate
market. Whether you are a seller
or buyer, the market can be a
boom either way.

LIFE…On The Road

In part one of this story (vol. 65
No. 26) our crew had to deal with
the realization of losing our coworker on the first AA flight #11
plane that hit the trade tower and
we were now trying to get back
into the USA…
After our five Canadian shows we
headed back to the USA border
on September 18th to Buffalo,
NY. Via Montreal. The Canadian
border has always been one of
the most difficult crossings in
the world (our neutral neighbors
don’t trust us?) and this day
would turn out to be full proof of
that.
When we arrived at the
border early that morning after
about a four hundred mile six
hour drive to a show with another
hundred still to go, we were
ordered off the tour bus by four
rather uptight American border
patrol guards. Mind you we had
16 buses and they could only
look at two at a time. Handguns
and automatic rifles were in
hand as well as two German
Shepherd “drug” dogs. I think
the standard at that time before
911 was to search for “drugs” and
not weapons or bombs as much.
Right after that fateful September
day, the emphasis changed and
nearly all new dogs at borders and
airports were trained to search
for bombs and weapons instead
of drugs. We were ordered to
leave all our belongings behind
and head out to the middle of the
parking lot about 50 feet away
from the bus. As if being lined
up for a firing squad, the twelve
of us were physically placed by
the officers and told to stand with
our hands at our sides in a straight
line (three feet apart from one
another) and not to speak unless
spoken to.
We then watched several
guards enter our bus with an
unleashed canine as we waited
nervously in the morning sun.
The second dog was brought
over to us and excitedly smelled
it’s way down the line up. At
least ten minutes went by before
the officers exited the bus. One
guard then walked over to us
holding a cigar box and a second
was holding something small
and undetectable in their hand.
Canada treats drug, domestic
abuse charges, DUI’s and other
misdemeanors very seriously and
will look back at your record as
many as twenty years. Again,
ridiculous, since our own country
only looks back 7 years. Though
none of us would be driving in
Canada during our short stay,
(another thing that seems silly
about their policy) they frown on
any type of criminal record and
you may not get in the country.
Period. Purely discretionary
at times and often it can be
personal. I have seen as much as
$3000 paid out for key personnel.
Production managers often walk
into border stations with wads of
cash in hopes of paying them off
for a crew member that has (or
had!) a police record in the USA
and can’t be replaced at the showespecially at a moments notice.
Passports and now required to
cross any border and if you don’t
have a passport, then you can
forget getting through.
The officer with the cigar
box spoke up and asked who
ever it belonged to step forward.
Fifty cigars were apparently too
many for one person to bring into
the USA from Canada and he
was ordered to pay One hundred
dollars if he wished to keep them.
A crisp C-note was immediately
passed to the officer. The box was
handed over. This was more than
the cost of the cigars! The second
officer then spoke up and asked
whom the sleeping pill belonged
to. The dog apparently found it
underneath one of the 12 bunk
pillows –he then asked to see the
prescription for it. This turned
out to be a big problem after
discovering the person didn’t
have one. This then triggered the
guards to turn our bus inside out
– they tore open parts of the bus
including some sections of the
ceiling. They then opened all the
bay doors under the bus where our
luggage and other gear and was
stored and started the removal
process. “Aren’t they supposed
to be looking for something more
important?” I thought. We’re
American! The guards then put
on rubber gloves and one by
one the officers took out each
suitcase, laid it out in the parking
lot in front of us, and then called
out asking the owner of each bag
to step forward. Each of us were
told to stand five feet from the
officer to watch them tear apart
all of our personal belongings

that we were forced to repack
when they were done.
Now
packing a suitcase for months on
the road can be a very meticulous
process and repacking it was very
frustrating and time consuming.
We later learned from our
bus driver that the dog was lifted
into all of our bunk beds (gross)
to sniff around for drugs and
paraphernalia. Other than the
random sleeping pill, nothing else
was found. Amen. We managed
to get all 127 people across
the border after a few hours. I
remember it looked like an F4
tornado hit the inside of the bus
when we climbed back aboard.
We could only shake ours heads
and laugh as we put our bus back
together and headed down the
road to another show.

Presentation on the Almaden radar station
and appeal for historical preservation

The Almaden Air
Force station, located on
Mt. Umunhum, served as
part of the radar defense
system of the United States
from 1958 to 1980.
The first speaker,
Basim Jaber, gave a photo
history of the station from
its opening to its closing.
He mentioned that the
facility on Mt. Umunuhum
was a station, not a base. A
base has items that a station
does not e.g. a runway.
While the station was not
as large as a base, the it was
large enough to constitute
a small community with
a swimming pool, a
basketball court, which
could double as a movie
theater, an NCO club,
a bowling alley; even a
chapel. Air Force personnel
along with their dependents
could live there. One thing
lacking was a school. The
children of the workers
took a blue bus to school in
the valley. I’ll write more
about the blue bus later.
In the early years
much of the work was done
manually with slide rules.
The year 1961 marked a
significant change in the
way the station was run.
The work of calculating
was aided by computers.
The
computer
aided
system was called SAGE
-Semi Automatic Ground
Environment.
In
this
system, computers talked
to other computers over
land lines. In other wordsa form of the internet
existed even back then. The
computing power needed
at the station took up a
great deal of space in one
building. Today the amount
of computing power used
at the station can be found
in today’s cell phone or
maybe tomorrow’s watch.
The new system, SAGE,
was also applied to the
bus which transported the
children to the school It was
called the “Sage Coach.”
The station was not
a weapons platform. Its
function was to be the
“sentry” who sounded the
alarm against potential
threats. This facility had
the largest ground rotating
radar in the military. The
effective range of the radar
was about 220 miles. The
curvature of the earth
limited the extent of the
radar’s effectiveness. The
“sentry” role played by
the station provided an
important role in being the
“eyes” in protecting the
United States, specifically
the Bay Area. People were
assigned in to monitor the
radar scopes in shifts to
provide 24 hour coverage.
The people whose job it was
to monitor the radar scopes
were called “scope dopes.”
While the station was not
a weapons platform, the
sentry function did make
it a potential target, so the
building which housed the
radar was built to withstand
a nearby nuclear blast. It
also utilized two signals,
so that if one signal was
jammed the station could
switch to the backup.
The microwave energy
generated by the radar was
also something one had to
be aware of. The “output”
side of the radar could cause
serious damage. Some birds
were apparently killed by
the radar. While umunhum,
means “hummingbird” in
the Ohlone language, this
mountain may not have
been the best place for
birds when the radar was
in operation. Perhaps as an
exercise in curiosity, some
would throw an egg from
the safe side of the radar
over to the other side. The
eggs would explode. So
it is best not to be on the
wrong side when the radar
is in operation.
Perhaps the defense
system may be compared
to the human body. Each
part has a role to play. Not
everyone can be a fist or
not everyone can be an eye.
The Almaden radar station
operated in conjunction
with other facilities, such
as NORAD.
It was interesting to
learn that ground control
take over the pilot controls
of a plane sent to intercept
an enemy aircraft and guide
the intercepting plane to the
hostile aircraft. Once there,
ground control would
return control back to the
pilot, who could then deal
with the enemy plane.
While the radar station
played an important role,
in the defense of the area,
it was not exactly hidden
away where no one could
see it. The station did
have days where the place
was open to the public.
Musicians would perform
there. A phone book even
had a photograph of the
radar building on its cover.
The existence of this radar
was not exactly a well-kept
secret.
Military technology
is constantly changing.
By 1980 the station was
considered
obsolete.
Missiles with multiple
warheads could deliver
payload much faster than
bombers, therefore the
system of detecting hostile
attacks had to be upgraded.
The sentry function, once
given to ground radar, was
transferred to satellites.
The official ceremonies
were held March 29, 1980.
Two days after the closing
ceremonies, the station
ceased functioning and fell
into disuse. The area was
blocked off to the public
due to safety concerns.
The abandoned station had
to be cleared of hazardous
materials such as lead.
The cleanup has been
completed. What remains
now is the building which
housed the radar.
The second speaker
gave an appeal to preserve
this
remaining
radar
building. The plan is to
first preserve the outer
structure. The amount of
money needed to meet the
first step is $ 1.5 million.
If that goal is met then the
second step is to turn the
first floor of the four story
structure into a museum.
Time is short. The building
is slated for destruction by
October 17. So the building
may be destroyed if the
funds are not raised in time.

I love a German folk story about A Little Word of Praise found in
One Hundred More Wisdom Stories by Margaret Silf.
There was once a little word of praise. She longed to grow
into something big and strong, but her mother would stroke
her little head and say, IÕm afraid youÕll always be little, but
never forget Ð a little word of praise is greater and stronger
than the most powerful word of command.Ó
The folktale tells about the great experiences the little word of
praise had throughout the day. Here is where you can write your
own story. Go through the day giving out your own little words of
praise. At the end of the day the Little Word of Praise excitedly
ran home to her mother and told about her wonderful adventures.
Her mother smiled, and added her own little word of praise.
Plants need sunshine to grow and flourish, and so do people. You
can add sunshine to everyone you meet by simply recognizing,
admiring, and encouraging their best qualities and aspirations.
Henry Goddard studied the power of words by attaching children
to a special energy measuring device. He found that when children
were given a word of praise or admiration, their energy level
increased and when discouraging words were spoken, their
energy level dropped. It is the same with people of all ages.
What if you could measure anyoneÕs current positive energy by
simply pointing your smart phone at
them and pushing a button. You would
start pointing your phone at everbody
you meet. That would be fascinating
enough, but what if you also discovered
you could increase each personÕs
positive energy by saying a few encouraging words? Imagine
yourself going through each day increasing positive energy! You
ÒYou may be very little É but you are strong enough to
make the sun rise in peopleÕs hearts.
To help make this into a habit, get some mints and call them
encourage-mints. Put the first one in your mouth as your own
encourage-mint. After enjoying its benefits, put another in your
mouth and before it dissolves look around and help make the sun
rise in someone elseÕs heart by giving that person your own little
word of encouragement. See how the world changes right before
your eyes.
