Disconnect your water hoses from your outside faucets and drain them. Change the filter in your furnace and set all your clocks back one hour. Now is also the time to start getting your Goldwing ready for winter. Change its oil and check its battery and get your battery tender ready. Don’t forget to set its clock also. Let’s start thinking about the chapter Christmas party. Congratulations to Max and Mary on getting a new home. Now we have no active chapter members living in Lawton. We still have a few weeks of riding time left so let’s get out there and ride when we can. Ride safe. 5 Bailyn Vitense – November16th Susan Mears – November 29th BIKER NAMES This is a reminder that we are drawing names at each monthly meeting and assigning members biker names. I would like to thank Marlin ”Smitty” Smith and Larry Jensen, our Rider Course Instructors, for presenting the Trike & Trailer Riders course. We had seven members attend the course. The TTRC range was held at the Tahlequah Aquatics Center parking lot which provided one of the best range surfaces we’ve had the privilege to train on. Our many thanks to the Tahlequah City Parks and Recreation Department for their support and cooperation. We offered five Rider Education Seminars presented by Jack Wagner, Jerry Hodges, Kay Smith, Bill Rhoades, and Steve Cotton. We thank them for their presentations, and for giving of their time. Kay Smith, District MAD Coordinator, also presented two Motorist Awareness Seminars. Our overall attendance was good. Troopers Scott Patton and Steve Eason brought the OK Highway Patrol and Department of Public Safety “Safe Riders” semi tractor trailer to promote motorcycle safety and motorist awareness. They made a presentation and took questions from the audience at the Level IV Breakfast on Saturday. The American Trucking Association (ATA) brought their “No-Zone” 18 wheeler for display. The ATA Representative and professional driver positioned bikes and trikes at different distances to illustrate the No-Zones around a semi tractor trailer and what the driver can see or can not see from the driver’s seat. Rodd Polk, LA. District Educator, offered two hand-made Quillows, one with a Native American design and one with a Christmas design, to be raffled off as a Rider Education fund raiser. Quillows are small quilts with a pocket at the bottom to warm your feet, and they fold up into a decorative pillow. Rodd’s late Mother made them as one of her last projects. Ticket sales earned $370.00 for Rider Education. Thank you Rodd! 7 Steve Cotton was selected as our Oklahoma District Educator of the Year for the second year in a role. Steve has worked hard to offer many Rider Education activities within Chapter X and Oklahoma District, promoted the Levels Program and is an asset to his Chapter Directors and the Oklahoma District Educator. Johnie Fredman, OK District Director, announced in the rally’s closing ceremony that we will not offer a Rider Course at the 2016 Muskogee Rally. No! We aren’t giving up on Rider Ed.! We hope to focus more on having fun rides and activities at the rally and conduct more of our training at the chapter level. We will explore the possibility of an OK District Training Weekend if we can overcome scheduling conflicts with other rallies, and anniversaries. Your input is always welcome! Ride Safe My Friends! 8 YOU’RE INVITED Come sail away with us on our 2nd annual WINGERS-N-WAVES cruise departing to the Caribbean January 2016. Visit the Boise City Bomb Memorial to view a replica of one of the six bombs mistakenly dropped on the city during testing on July 6, 1943. The bomb was dropped by pilots in a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber when they mistakenly took lights around the town's square to be their target. Luckily, only practice bombs were used and the town square was deserted when the bomb was dropped just after midnight, though many buildings were damaged or destroyed. The Boise City Bomb Memorial is located just in front of the Red Chamber Caboose. ( Information taken from “Oklahoma’s Roadside Oddities” at www.travelok.com) 11 Do I Have to Own a Goldwing? Jack Wagner, Region H Trainer Have you met someone who would be a good fit with your GWRRA Chapter? But they don't ride a Goldwing. Encourage them to join. Did a GWRRA member sell their Goldwing and either quit riding or purchase another brand of motorcycle? Encourage them to stick around. Most of us know there are two categories of GWRRA membership, Full Members and Associate Members. To be a Full Member, one must own a Goldwing or Valkyrie motorcycle. Associate Members are those who either own another brand of motorcycle, or maybe no motorcycle at all, but are still interested in being a part of GWRRA because of all we have to offer. It was recently announced that Associate Members no longer pay any more than a Full Member to enjoy all of the benefits of GWRRA membership. So, other than not having a Goldwing, are there other differences between being a Full and Associate Member? The short answer is 'not really'. They can participate equally in any and all activities at all levels with only 2 exceptions – and one of those can be overridden in extreme circumstances. Associate Members are not eligible to become Directors or Assistant Directors (at any level) and they may not participate in the Couple of the Year selection process above the Chapter level. Yes, Associate Members may be honored as your Chapter Couple of the Year – they just cannot participate in the District selection process. Yes, an Associate Member can hold team positions, even the officer positions such as Trainer, Educator, Membership Enhancement Coordinator or Treasurer. The exception I mentioned that might be overridden; in the rare instance of a Chapter facing closure due to no Full Member assuming the Directorship, a qualified Associate Member desiring the position can be considered as an alternative to closing the Chapter. So don't be a Goldwing 'snob'. Embrace Associate Members and encourage others to join and participate as an Associate Member. Who knows, they may realize owning a Goldwing really IS for them! It’s a great way to grow your Chapter. For more information on types of memberships, refer to the Officer Handbook and New Member Orientation Guide. The More You Know, the Better It Gets!
