NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2010
Jaargang 1, nr. 4
On a very important moment Andy
Schleck’s has a chain damage. The
yellow jersey goes to Contadore and
he is winning the tour. This is a mental hit a
cyclist wishes never to have. The ‘Tour the
France’ is the most important cycling-event in
times, you really don’t want to have ‘material
damage’. But now I realize it’s important to
tell you about chain maintenance, so please
read my part below. We hope you’ll enjoy
reading this newsletter and feel free to take a
look in our shop.

Chain Maintenance
Chain and sprockets wear out much faster if they
get dirty , and replacement is expensive . Cleaning can be most easily done with a special tray
with rotating brushes and chain cleaner solvent
( or diesel ) . That fluid is used multiple times if
you leave to settle in a bowl . pipe cleaner and a
toothbrush works well , not a rag , it just rub the
dirt in the chain . not forget the gears . After
cleaning the chain with Teflon , grease the gears
your self a few times on and off switch . Remove
excess with a Teflon patch , otherwise it is precisely this extra dirt into slices .
Very important is the time to replace your chain
( depending on conditions after three to five
thousand kilometers) , a worn chain accelerates
wear on the gears. Regularly replace your chain
is cheaper than replacing everything less often .
Your chain is worn if you can lift a link from
youre blad , or if ten links clearly longer than
12.7 cm. When replacing the chain on the correct
length and width ( number of gears ). It is not
necessary same brand to buy , though it usually
turns a little better . Shimano chains have the disadvantage of the special locking pin : it can only
one times to use ( although you can smuggle a
bit by not running away from it all , there is
something more than play on ) . Other brands
tend to have special links that connect you again
and again can be used without special tools . After a few times, replace your chain (ten to fifteen
thousand miles, you can see from burrs , very
sharp teeth and no longer round slots) is also
time for new gear , they work on each other .
Lubricate your chain always on the inner side.

$10,TRAIL OF THE MONTH
Start: Kaya Grandi in direction of the church.
Pass the church and take the first road to the right to Niki Boko North.
Follow this road in direction of Jatu Bacu. The paved road goes further as a dirt road, follow this till you see the first big (white painted) truck tire. Turn left, the road takes you to
the right and goes up a little bit. At the T-cross point go right. You’ll reach an open area
and see a windmill, turn about 350° left. Follow this road to another T-cross point and
turn right and follow the road. At the cross point go straight and further ahead keep left.
Follow this road and after the road is going down a bit, turn right . Take the steep uphill
and follow the trail down again. Underneath the hill turn right and immediately right
again. Go uphill and when you’re almost at the top turn left. This is a very steep downhill
trail, follow this trail. When you enter the wide dirt road, turn right. Stay on this road till
the first intersection. Turn left and further turn right until you are at the windmill. From
here follow the road until you reach the paved road again and go back to Kralendijk.
Disc Brakes
A disc brake consists of a metal disc attached to the wheel hub that rotates with
the wheel. Callipers are attached to the frame or fork along with pads that
squeeze together on the disc. As the pads drag against
the disc, the wheel - and thus the bicycle - is slowed as
kinetic energy (motion) is transformed into heat.
A bicycle disc brake may be mechanically actuated, as
with a Bowden cable, or hydraulically actuated, or a
combination of the two.
Advantages and disadvantages
Disc brakes tend to perform equally well in all conditions
including water, mud, and snow due to a several factors:
- The braking surface is farther from the ground and
possible contaminants like mud which can coat or
freeze on the rim.
- Disc brake pads when fully retracted ride much closer to the braking surface
than rim brake pads. This better prevents a buildup of water or debris under the
pad.
- There are holes in the rotor, providing a path for water and debris to get out
from under the pads.
- Wheel rims tend to be made of lightweight metal. Brake discs and pads are
harder and can accept higher maximum loads.
- Disc brake assemblies are heavier than rim brakes,
and are generally more expensive.
- While all types of brakes will eventually wear out the
braking surface, a brake disc is easier and cheaper to
replace than a wheel rim or drum.
Since about 2003, riders have reported a dangerous
problem using disc brakes: under hard braking, the
front wheel comes out from the dropouts. The problem occurs where the brake
pads and dropouts are aligned so the brake reaction force tends to eject the wheel
from the dropout. Under repeated hard braking, the axle moves in the dropout in
a way that unscrews the quick release.
Riders should make sure the skewers are properly tightened before riding.
