Half days or full days, Monday - Friday Art is a vital part of child development The visual arts are not only naturally fun, participation in art programs help a child: • Develop the ability to think creatively with an open mind. • Learn to observe and describe, analyze and interpret. • Express feelings more easily, with or without words. • Practice problem-solving and critical thinking skills. • Experience that there are multiple points of view, more than one right answer. • Explore collaborative and teamworking skills. • Learn about other cultures in tangible terms. • Experience pride and accomplishment as skills are mastered and projects are completed. • Build confidence and self-esteem. Classes thoughtfully fine-tuned to each age group to challenge and inspire. Age-appropriate projects challenge and engage to build confidence and skills. 18 clay camp options this year! From handbuilding to the potter’s wheel, campers learn fundamentals and make treasures to keep. Expanded options for Ages 5-6 including half-days and full-days. With 94 classes to choose from, parents may customize weekly camps to fit schedules and child interests! To make it easier, Group A classes are themed by day of week. Children do something different and fun everyday. Mix and match! Highly qualified teaching artists deliver quality art projects. Campers work in state of the art studios with talented artists. Plus the on-site museum quality gallery offers a source of perspective and inspiration. Wholesome, nutritious lunches and snacks are available at the Art Center Café, open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Creative Kids Academy, a NAEYC accredited childcare facility right next door, is available for before or after class childcare if needed. Children ages 5 to 6 may register for half- or full-days as many times a week as desired (1 to 10 classes a week). Classes may be combined in any way to work with the family schedule and connect with each child’s interests. Please plan carefully before registering to avoid fees for making changes later (details on page 19). If attending a full day of two classes, please bring snacks, a bag lunch and beverage or purchase food on-site from the Art Center Café. LIONNI’S LOVABLE CRITTERS BIG NATURE BY O’KEEFFE (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Have fun recreating the lovable pieced characters of Leo Lionni (1910-1999) like Swimmy the Fish or Frederick the Mouse by experimenting with colorful watercolor and collage techniques. The morning class will draw and paint creatures of the sea. The afternoon class will paint the amazing animals and insects living in the backyard or garden. Enrollment limited to 16. (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Like Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1996), we’ll magnify shapes and simplify details to capture nature’s beauty using acrylics and experiment with basic visual elements of line, shape and color. The morning class will paint big flowers inspired by O’Keeffe’s modernist floral paintings. The afternoon class will paint bold landscapes inspired by O’Keeffe’s paintings of New Mexico. He became one of the most important artists of the 20th century, clearing the way for pop art in America by painting unsurprising things like flags, letters or numbers in surprising new ways. Come experiment with paint and collage to find your special art. The morning class will collage and paint flags. The afternoon class will create colorful map collages. Enrollment limited to 16. Monday, June 29 A105AM: 9 a.m. - noon (Flags) A105PM: 1 - 4 p.m. (Maps) KLEE’S CATS AND CASTLES VIBRANT FRIDA KAHLO (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Famous Swiss artist Paul Klee (18791940) admired the freedom in children’s artwork and strived to capture that simplicity in his own art. His well known Cat and Bird painting sets the stage for an animal extravaganza! The morning class will create bright, colorful animal portraits using paints and mixed-media. The afternoon class will design a castle for creatures with colored pencils and imagination. Enrollment limited to 16. (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is best known for very personal self-portraits and vibrant still lifes using symbols from her culture. She painted tropical plants, butterflies, monkeys and Aztec art symbols. More than anything else, Frida painted what she knew best – herself and her beloved Mexico. The morning class will paint colorful self-portraits filled with personal symbols. The afternoon class will explore some Mexican folk art traditions in mixed-media. Enrollment limited to 16. He once made a giant soft sculpture hamburger, almost good enough to eat! What kind of food or object do you want to super size? The morning class will create a soft sculpture picnic lunch. The afternoon class will design and paint ideas for giant public art sculptures like Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis! Enrollment limited to 16. Experience art in a new way, using living elements. The morning class will create a unique two or three-dimensional eco sculpture. The afternoon class will make a natural bird feeder. (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Originator of the mobile, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is mostly known for kinetic sculptures, but he also created fabulous wire sculptures like his whimsical and imaginative Cirque Calder. Using everyday objects and soft bendable wire, campers will sculpt their own miniature circus. The morning class will craft acrobats and performers. The afternoon class will make circus animals. Monday, August 10 A132AM: 9 a.m. - noon (Acrobats) A132PM: 1 - 4 p.m. (Animals) RINGGOLD FABRIC STORIES (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Create a textile story collage using fabric shapes, fibers and clever embellishments inspired by African-American artist Faith Ringgold (1930-), best known for her painted story quilts. The morning class will “paint” a colorful, textured landscape or cityscape with fabric. The afternoon class will design and decorate small figures and creatures out of fabric and mixed-media. Monday, August 17 A137AM: 9 a.m. - noon (Cityscapes) A137PM: 1 - 4 p.m. (Figures) KANDINSKY’S CIRCLE PAINTING (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members Russian-born artist Wassily Kandinsky (1886-1944) began as a realistic painter but seeing an exhibit of Impressionist artwork, painting took on a fairy-tale power and splendor for him. Experience the excitement of connecting color, form and sound as in Kandinsky’s circle paintings. The morning class will paint brightly colored circles and shapes using tempera or acrylic paints. The afternoon class will explore how painting and music can go together. Enrollment limited to 16. This class will introduce tools and techniques and train the eye to see shapes and details. We will practice drawing different subjects and study prints by master artists that provide visual clues and inspiration. The morning class will create a vase perfect for summertime flowers, holding straws or pencils. The afternoon class will make pinch pots that can be shaped, carved, and sculpted in surprising ways. Projects will be decorated with colored slips and glazed for finishing, ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 16. Create a fiber collage using different fabrics, embroidery threads, inks and fabric markers. The morning class will befriend and draw the giant rabbit-eared Totoro and his smaller forest friends. The afternoon class will together recreate the magical cat bus in mixed-media for a flying fun adventure. Enrollment limited to 16. The morning class will draw and paint favorite sea characters in a watercolor world. The afternoon class will practice the ancient Japanese folk art of Gyotaku and make colorful prints using realistic rubber fish and sea creatures. Enrollment limited to 16. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members There are more than 30 different dragons in How to Train Your Dragon. That’s plenty of inspiration! The morning class will sculpt dragons and other mythical creatures using air-dry modeling clay and other art materials. The afternoon class will create a colorful wind catcher that might be found in the Isle of Berk. Enrollment limited to 16. As the movie says, “Your identity is your most valuable possession. Protect it.” The morning class will use super creative power to make a superhero mask. See where curiosity leads and what creativity can make. The morning class will draw and paint animal characters with their favorite things, like Paddington bear and his suitcase of marmalade. MONSTER UNIVERSITY (1 class) $38 Members / $42 Non-members There’s nothing scary about these monsters, they’re friends from Monster University! The morning class will have fun drawing and painting monster buddies like Mike and Sulley. Artist-Instructors Summer Arts Camp instructors are all college graduates who are either teaching artists or art educators. Lunch & Snack Breaks All classes take a 15-minute supervised snack break halfway through class. Campers participating in full-day classes take a one-hour, supervised lunch break. Please notify us at least three weeks in advance if your child has special dietary issues that may affect the other campers and we will do our best to notify parents of the issue. Please note: The Art Center is NOT a peanut-free facility. Camp Attire Summer Arts Camp classes use high-quality arts materials for all projects. As some pigments and materials may stain, please dress your children in appropriate clothing. The Art Center is not responsible for clothing that is damaged in art classes. Children will play games outdoors during snack and lunch breaks, weather permitting. Summer Arts Camp Registration Form CANCELLATIONS There will be a $5 administrative fee charged per class for all changes, transfers or cancellations. Campers who withdraw 29 or more days prior to the class start date will receive a 100 percent refund, minus the administrative fee per class. Campers who withdraw 15 to 28 days prior to the class start date will receive a 50 percent refund, minus the administrative fee per class. No refunds will be issued 0 to 14 days prior to the class start date. Campers may transfer from one class to another up to 14 days prior to the class start date with a $5 administrative fee per class. In the case of illness (physician’s note required), campers may transfer classes until the first day of class, subject to availability, with a $5 administrative fee per class. No refunds will be issued after the start of the class due to illness. In the event the Art Center must cancel a session due to insufficient enrollment, a full refund will be issued. If a session is cancelled, the Art Center will notify parents five business days before the class is scheduled to start. The Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet the enrollment minimum of six or more campers. LATE PICK-UP FEES Caregivers should accompany children to and pickup from their classrooms. Please do not drop your child off more than 5 minutes before class time, unless it is at Creative Kids Academy and arrangements have been made with them.
