A guide for 5-19 year olds in North Paddington
Message from the Editor
Hello and welcome to this first edition of your “Where Can I go? What Can I do?”
This guide, for 5-19 year olds, is full of information about the wide range of
activities in North Paddington, reflecting the vibrant and unique mix of young
people living here.
From Regent’s Park and the Fourth Feathers Club in Church Street, past the
Stowe Club and along the Harrow Road, and up past New Avenues through
Queen’s Park, there are loads of organisations offering loads of activities!
Whatever you want to do, there’s probably somewhere in here to do it. For
example, you can design costumes for Carnival, brush up on some IT skills, get
help with your homework, play sport, cook, practise your DJ skills, dance, sing,
act or have a say in how things are run in your neighbourhood - plus a whole
lot more.
We checked all the details, addresses, phone numbers, etc. before going to print,
but be warned, things do change quite quickly so some information may get a
bit out of date.
If you read through this entire guide and you STILL can’t find something you
want to do, then go into your local youth club and TELL THE YOUTH WORKERS
what you want to do and chances are, they can sort something out for you.
We hope you’ll find the guide helpful so keep it handy and enjoy!

community about youth
provision by providing us
with information about their

The listings in this directory
are simply a guide to let
young people and families
know about activities that
are happening in the local
community. Any questions
or concerns about Criminal
Record Bureau checks, health
and safety policies or quality
marks etc. should be directed
to the individual organisations
listed.
Although every attempt has
been made to ensure the
accuracy of the information in this directory at the time of

Knowing about Yourself
By Diana Nortey
How do you feel when sex is talked
about around you? Embarrassed?
Uncomfortable? You shouldn’t feel
any of these things. When you get
older, you’re going to be curious
about it. Especially since the media
plasters it all over the television,
including commercials. Anywhere
you look there’s something slightly
referring to it. Well I’ve done some
investigating around Paddington,
and found a woman who answered
the questions that you will probably
have about sexual health and well
being for young people. Let’s face
it, you can’t hide from it forever, and
it’d be pretty nerve wracking to ask
your parents about these kinds of
things without getting that “Why are
you thinking about that at your age”
look or something close to that.
Lydia Hodson is a predominant
figure at St Mary’s hospital, Winsland
Clinic dealing with teenagers’
sexual health needs and giving
information and advice about sex
and contraception.

Have you had
any teenagers
come in asking fo

They ask about
a lot of things;
condoms, sexual

They’re very op

this benefits them
so they have
more knowledge
of it.
Have you personally had
teenagers confide in you, or
any other staff members? Why
do you think that is?
Yeah, a lot of the young people
that come here do confide in
us, from problems at home
to any sexual matter that
they are curious about. I
think what it is, is that they
probably find it easier to talk
to strangers, and that fear of
disapproval or embarrassment
isn’t as present in their head
if they approach someone close
to them or their parents.

Guns, whatever you wish
to call them, they’re still
wrong! So why carry them?
Like JME said, “who’s gonna
sign a guy wit a shank?”
Think about it! What
happened to fighting with
your fists? Why get involved
with something greater than
yourselves?
Nowadays,
youths
as
young as age twelve carry,
‘shanks’ and ‘straps.’ They
get involved in gang wars
between different area’s
‘ends’ and feel they need to
have protection with them all
the time.

This black on black beef
(fight) needs to end. Why
fight against your own race?
I am not trying to imply that
you fight with another race;
all that I am trying to say
is that you should drop the
guns and the knives because
the next victim could be you,
your sister, brother or even
your girl. Imagine! Drop the
guns before they drop you.
What Do You Want To Be When You Get Older?
Shanks
By Suki Kaur, Age 18
The articles featured on the following pages were written by young people who participated in the Central
London Development’s (CLYD) ‘Our Choice, Our Life‘ newsletter project. For more information about CLYD, see
page 31.
“What do you want
to become when you
grow older?” Mum
asks.
“I’m
not
sure
mummy,
maybe
a
teacher,
like
granddad always
said I would be.”
But it doesn’t always
go the way you want
it to, does it?
Children grow up
with ambitions and
with dreams of one
day fulfilling them.
However,
without
determination and
drive, those dreams
can
be
easily
forgotten and shaped
into desires of their
parents. A typical
Asian family will
have a pretty good
idea of what they
want their son or
daughter to become
– either a doctor or a
nurse. A career which
provides a big income
is ideal. Money is the
key; the answer to
everything. Anyone
ever wondered why
a huge number of
doctors are Asian?
Well if not, they
probably own a sweet
shop on the corner of
your road.
This ‘typical family’
has become today’s
stereotype
for
Asians. I’m sure that
all Asians have been
asked this question
at least once, “Does
your dad own a
sweet shop?” However,
freedom means that
we can have control
over those initial
dreams and take our
own paths in life.
I am Indian. I am
not studying to be
a doctor or nurse, or
a sweet shop owner.
In fact, I am off
to become a music
teacher like my
granddad always
said I would be.
Stereotype broken?

we have a partner. They complain
when we pin lock our phones, leave
the room for a private conversation
and take our mobile everywhere
we go, even into the toilets. I mean
come on. Some things are meant
to be kept quiet!

Too Nice Coz I’m Mixed Race
By Sasha and Rudi, Ages 15
Being mixed race, people immediately get the
impression that ‘oh my gosh, gyal finks she is
too nice coz she mixed race.’ I personally think
that’s pathetic, it’s unfair and goes to show how
much our society needs to develop. What puts a lot
of mixed race young people down is also the fact
that our society is so divided, that sometimes we
are given very little choice and in order to fit in
with an in group, we tend to have to choose which
race we want to socialise mostly with. This then
excludes us from our other half. Is that fair? Is
skin colour really that important? How silly
do the comments about mixed race individuals
sound now? People, especially young people,
need to open their minds rather than their eyes,
and stop judging after their first glance. Mixed
race children have parents who had the courage,
like a lot of other people, to fight inequality.
And you know what, we will also do the same:
stand up tall, with our heads held up high and
say yes, we are mixed race, we are proud. If you
mistake my courage for me thinking that I am
too nice, then quite frankly, I’m fine with that.

Your Roots‘ chapter.

Can Music Be Balanced with Education?
By Randane Willis (aka Cortex), Age 18

80
For parents, this
is a question
which will always
have an answer of
NO; however, what
is the true answer
to this question? I
was once told by
my mother that
I needed to stop
creating music
or it was going
to mess up my
future. At the
present moment,
I am in college
studying
A
levels, and in my
spare time I hit
the booth to make
hip hop music. (I
am working on
my first album
entitled
“When
its in your blood”
which will be out
sometime
next
year, and you
can check out my
previous work at
www.myspace.
com/cortex1.)
There are others,
on the other hand,
who aren’t able
to do both, so the
result is giving up
one or the other.
Some
of
the
most successful
musicians
are
educated to the
highest
level.
Take for example
Jay Sean, who,
prior to his music
career was a well
paid doctor; or JME
from Boy Better
Know, who is able
to lock down Aya
Napa, but yet still
have time to go to
university.
Personally
I
think it’s all in
how you set your
schedule.
Plus,
all the modern
universities and
employees want
to know that
you’re able to
balance work and
leisure. Besides,
who wants to be

I attended a trip a couple
of months back to play
professional cricket on
a cricket campus; this
experience was enlightening
and also very enjoyable.
Three days of just cricket it
was amazing. I loved it! As
days passed, I learnt a rule

skills. This was called

coordination.
We use this in our every
day lives. Then, when the
campus ended, I had a lot of
skills that probably would
have taken years to achieve
if I hadn’t experienced such
a wonderful opportunity. I
think to actually attain a
goal, we as youngsters, have
to be given the opportunity
to experience the lifestyle,
even if it is for only a couple
of days.

Fatherless Home
By Quam, Age 19
As a youngster he knew no wrong
Fatherless home, but his mother was strong
Alienated by his classmates as he was deemed weird
Started hanging around with the elders
And conformed to his mothers fears
The ones they called crooks and thieves
Were his brothers in arms.
The father figures he never had
But where did it all go wrong
His mother showed love, as much as she could
But her one and only son still turned into a thug
Now as the tears roll down her face
She still finds it hard to take the news
Another sixteen year old’s life…has been taken away
If you would like to speak to someone confidentially, the organisations listed in the ‘Need
Some Advice‘ chapter are ready to listen.
