HITTING IT BIG
It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the
lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin
to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have
thought: Why, of course he'd want to find a way to preserve his good fortune
for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It's exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz
show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this "common wisdom" makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that
much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will
not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. We will not achieve the future
security we pursue, and we will lose the present moment in the chase.

Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, T.O.S.F. (8 May 1786 – 4 August
1859), commonly known in English as St. John Vianney, was a
French parish priest who is venerated in the Catholic Church as
a saint and as the patron saint of parish priests. He is often referred to
as the "Curé d'Ars" (i.e., Parish Priest of Ars), internationally known
for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish inArs, France, because
of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings. Catholics attribute this to his saintly life, mortification, his
persevering ministry in the sacrament of confession, and his ardent
devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His feast day is August 4.

SUMMER TRIVIA SERIES
One very significant part of St. Barbara’s history is the story of war in Vietnam and the resettlement of thousands of refugees in Southern California in 1975. These refugees were brought to
Camp Pendleton where they were living in extremely crowded and unhealthy quarters – the
camp being totally unprepared for the huge number arriving each day to await processing and
“adoption” by Americans willing to offer sponsorship for resettlement.
Fr. Michael Collins and a group of concerned parishioners responded to this situation by forming an organization called CROSS – Christian Resettlement Organization for Social Services.
“Mr. Ed” coordinated this program with the help of other leaders in the parish community. Donations were solicited and the program was able to purchase several apartment houses on Fairview and McFadden. These were filled within a few days of purchase. Ultimately, before
CROSS completed its work, eighty (80) Vietnamese families were resettled through its efforts.
Many of St. Barbara’s families opened their hearts and homes to one, two, or more of the refugees. In some cases, whole families were welcomed. Reverend Joachim Tu, who just recently
passed away, would come from St. Boniface Church in Anaheim to have Mass on Sunday for the
thirteen families in this area. It wasn’t long before the community worshiping here grew to four
hundred families. The registered families grew to seven hundred with a total population of about
six thousand people in 1987 and continues to grow today. Together with the gradual assimilation
of the Spanish community since 1962, St. Barbara’s has grown into a multi-cultural parish of
three languages: English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Many religious associations and organizations have been created for the parish to foster and encourage religious, social, and cultural development.
Through the years, many pastors have added their own dimensions of change to continue to
update the faith life of the parish. Fr. Kennedy inaugurated three social and spiritual entities to
the parish: the annual Parish Festival, the Neo-Catechumenate for adults and youth, and a Parish Pastoral Council. The formal religious education of the young people is entrusted to the care
of the Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross, a Vietnamese community, who have had over 500
children in their program.
Unfortunately, this week is the conclusion of our
Summer Trivia Series on St. Barbara Parish.

“GIÀU CÓ” NHỜ BIẾT CHO ĐI
Anh em phải coi chừng… không phải vì dư giả mà mạng
sống con người được bảo đảm đâu.” (Lc 12,15)
Suy niệm: Oprah Winfrey là nữ hoàng truyền hình của Mỹ, cũng
là nữ hoàng từ thiện của nhiều chương trình, nhất là tặng học
bổng cho các trẻ em, thiếu nữ nghèo ở Phi Châu. Bà là người
hùng, hình mẫu vĩ đại của rất nhiều người vì sự chia sẻ hào
phóng ấy. Bà nói về chuyện giàu có như sau: “Tôi dễ chịu vì
những gì sự giàu có mang lại, thế nhưng sự giàu có ấy không
thay đổi được điều tôi là ai. Chân tôi vẫn ở trên mặt đất. Chỉ có
điều tôi mang đôi giày tốt hơn thôi.” Người phú hộ trong bài Tin
Mừng không hành xử được như vậy, ông chỉ mãi mê thu tích cho
riêng mình. Chỉ trong một đoạn văn ngắn, ta nhận ra năm lần
chữ “mình” của ông. Cái nhìn của ông về cuộc đời quá hạn hẹp,
chỉ thu gọn nơi việc có nhiều của cải để hưởng thụ, mà quên mất
phải tường trình cho Chúa về việc sử dụng của cải ấy trong ngày
cuối đời.
Mời Bạn: “Khi giờ sau cùng của bạn giáng xuống, bạn chỉ nên
dựa vào điều bạn đã trở thành” (nhà văn St. Exupéry). Với
Chúa, bạn giàu có không phải vì có nhiều, nhưng vì đã cho đi
nhiều. Càng cho đi nhiều, bạn càng trở thành Ki-tô hữu rõ nét
hơn.
Sống Lời Chúa: Tôi chăm chỉ học hành, làm việc, để có nhiều
tiền lo cho cuộc sống, nhưng không quên sử dụng tiền của ấy
đúng như ý Chúa muốn.

Vị sáng lập dòng Tên này đang trên đà danh vọng và quyền thế của một sĩ
quan trong quân đội Tây Ban Nha thì một trái đạn đại bác đã làm ngài bị
thương ở chân. Trong thời kỳ dưỡng bệnh, vì không có sẵn các cuốn tiểu thuyết để giết thời giờ nên ngài đã biết đến cuộc đời Ðức Kitô và hạnh các thánh.
Lương tâm ngài bị đánh động, và từ đó khởi đầu một hành trình lâu dài và đau
khổ khi trở về với Ðức Kitô.
Thánh Y Nhã đích thực là một vị thần bí. Ngài tập trung vào đời sống tâm
linh dựa trên các nền tảng thiết yếu của Kitô Giáo -- Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi,
Ðức Kitô, Bí Tích Thánh Thể. Linh đạo của ngài được tỏ lộ trong châm ngôn
của Dòng Tên, ad majorem Dei gloriam -- "để Thiên Chúa được vinh danh
hơn." Trong quan niệm của ngài, sự tuân phục là một đức tính nổi bật nhằm
đảm bảo cho thành quả và sự năng động của tu hội. Mọi hoạt động phải được
hướng dẫn bởi lòng yêu mến Giáo Hội thực sự và tuân phục Ðức Thánh Cha
vô điều kiện, vì lý do đó, mọi thành viên của dòng phải khấn lời thề thứ tư, đó
là phải đến bất cứ đâu mà đức giáo hoàng đã sai đi để cứu rỗi các linh hồn.
Thánh Y Nhã đề nghị lời nguyện sau đây cho các hối nhân: "Lạy Chúa, xin
hãy chấp nhận mọi đặc quyền, mọi ký ức, mọi hiểu biết và

Parece cosa comúnmente aceptada hoy día que todo el mundo quiere ganarse la lotería, ganar en el casino o ser
millonario. Esta actitud es similar a la de los primeros oyentes de la parábola del agricultor próspero que pensarían:
Por supuesto. Él tenía que buscar la manera de preservar su buena fortuna para el futuro, para asegurarse una vida
muelle, comiendo, bebiendo y gozando. Es exactamente la clase de vida que nos brindaría hoy el billete premiado,
una buena mano de cartas o la respuesta correcta en el programa de TV. Estar rodeados por este "sentido común"
hace mucho más difícil escuchar hoy las palabras de Cohélet, del salmista, de Pedro y de Jesús. Quizás nos sonría la
buena fortuna, quizás no. Pero si hacemos que esa fortuna o su búsqueda sea el corazón, el centro mismo de nuestra vida, viviremos para lamentarlo. No adquiriremos la seguridad futura que perseguimos y perderemos el momento
presente por estar persiguiéndola.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Del 1o al 5 de agosto los capitalinos en El Salvador celebran la fiesta del Salvador del Mundo, cuando recuerdan la Transfiguración de
Jesús en el Monte Tabor. Como muchas fiestas patronales en Latinoamérica esta semana
está llena de carnavales y desfiles. La celebración principal es una procesión religiosa
con la imagen de Jesús, el Divino Salvador del
mundo. La estatua de Jesús con sus brazos
extendidos en bendición es llevada desde la
Basílica del Sagrado Corazón hasta la Catedral Metropolitana. Vestida de un rojo que
recuerda su pasión, la imagen es cargada sobre los hombros de una veintena de fieles. Al
llegar a la catedral la imagen patronal es
puesta en una torre de más de 20 metros de
alto. Eventualmente la estatua revestida de
blanco aparece de una esfera encima de la
torre en medio de gritos, aplausos y cantos.
Esta esfera azul representa el mundo entero,
mundo salvado por Cristo. La transfiguración
de esta imagen en San Salvador recuerda la
pasión y resurrección de Jesús, eventos
claves que han hecho de él, el Salvador del
Mundo entero.
