May he always guard, protect and enlighten families. Pope John Paul II St. Barbara Catholic Church "God writes straight with crooked lines," the saying goes. The power of Paul's testimony that everything is junk but knowledge of Jesus and the power of his resurrection is a straight enough message. And, God knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding insight straight from God. Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works were as nothing compared to the new creation. "Can't you see it?" we are asked, as if we are still wandering along our crooked lines. And there is no straighter line than that between the woman whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is deeper and more acute. You just can't beat this kind of good news. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY ! Your donations for the week of March 5 – March 6, 2016 $26,497.00 Your weekly support have been used to sustain the ministries and ongoing operating needs of our parish. www.saintbarbarachurch.org March 13 2016 - Page 3 STATIONS OF THE CROSS DURING LENT 9:00 AM every FRIDAY (English) 3:30 PM every TUESDAY (Vietnamese) 4:45 PM every FRIDAY (Vietnamese) TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Three years ago, as we made the shift in the Eucharistic Prayer from "Benedict" to "Francis," we named a "treasure" in our tradition. From apostolic times, the Church has sent disciples on mission with a mandate to proclaim the gospel. Paul and Barnabas and Timothy come to mind as men invested with responsibility for community and mission. First we see bishops, "overseers," good men appointed by the acclaim of their people, the center of leadership, of prayer, of word and sacrament. Their territories were small initially, small enough to get everyone into one room and for the bishop to know everyone's name. In time, men were appointed to function as a council of advisers, "elders," or presbyters. That isn't a comment on chronological age, rather it indicates the maturity of their wisdom and faith. Before long, and only when the bishop was absent, some of these men "stood in" for him to do what bishops usually did: preaching, presiding at Eucharist. The deacons had a strong and visible role in liturgy and service, especially in the care of the poor, but were gradually overshadowed by the new importance of the presbyter. As the Roman Empire first tottered and then collapsed completely by 476, bishops increasingly became civil servants to maintain order and dispense justice. Conferences and duties summoned bishops away from their home posts, and presbyters were entrusted with the sacramental and preaching duties, even though at one time runners were sent out from the bishop's Mass to bring fragments of the host to drop into chalices as a sign of the church's unity around its bishop. --Rev. James Field Mitch Udell, Tim Garcia, Truong ToLoan, Cindy Olis, Reyna Mendez, Thomas Myers, Dani Araujo, JJ Mendez, Araujo Family, Fred Gonzalez, Mike Gonzalez, Lucy Sanchez, Tom Williams, Travis Johnson Huismans. Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. SAINT PATRICK (c. 385-461)- March 17 Patrick was born in Scotland, the son of a Roman soldier. At fourteen he was captured by Irish raiders and enslaved for six years, forced to herd and tend sheep. After several attempts he was able to escape and returned to his homeland. Later he was ordained to the priesthood, and at the age of forty-six he returned to Ireland from the north as a bishop and missionary. Using the knowledge of the language and culture that he gained during his captivity, Patrick dedicated himself to evangelizing the leaders of the tribes, starting with the most influential and powerful. Despite threats against his life, he continued to preach the Gospel, founding convents, monasteries, and parishes. He strove to Christianize the pagan rites such as the Druid spring fires, which he transformed into the Easter Vigil's "new fire," openly defying the customs imposed by the priests of the Celtic religion. This almost cost him his life, but his victory was also one for Christianity. The patron saint of Ireland is also known for using the shamrock to teach the Holy Trinity, and he recast a Celtic "talisman" into the still-popular "Saint Patrick's Breastplate" (Christ Before Me). Peter Scagnelli St. Barbara Catholic Church There will be a second collection this weekend March 12-13 to support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. The envelopes will be placed at the pews. Thank you for your contribution to help strengthen the Church at home! Your generosity will provide catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, and other pastoral programs in needy dioceses across the United States.
