St. Barbara Catholic Church www.saintbarbarachurch.org Sept 18, 2016 - Page 3 Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner The Prudent Steward Luke 16:1-13 is certainly one of the most perplexing Gospel passages. The dishonest manager who was about to be released from duty by his master (a rich man) suddenly made a surprising recovery. How so? He called in his master’s debtors one by one to ask them: “How much do you owe my master?” They would say: “One hundred units of something.” Then he would say to them: “Write in your promissory note for eighty (or fifty).” Then the master commended him. Why would he commend him? Certainly not for his “dishonesty,” but for his prudence… The Jesuit biblical scholar, Joseph Fitzmyer, provides the following insights in his two-volume commentary on St. Luke’s Gospel. In the context of the economic situation during Jesus’ time, the master was most likely a rich absentee landlord who entrusted all his financial business to a well-trained and trusted manager. The latter would act in his master’s name in transactions with third parties: liquidation of debts, making of loans, etc. He would earn his living by means of a commission, or an interest. The amount owed was usually written in promissory notes or bonds. However, that amount only mentioned the total amount owed: principal plus interest. So if a debtor borrows eighty, the amount written on the note may be one hundred: meaning that the manager would earn twenty for his commission. Such practices were common and accepted in that time. So in the case of the Gospel reading today, the manager most likely did NOT act dishonestly in regards to his master’s properties. He was simply forgoing his own commission money by reducing the amounts that the debtors owed. In doing so, he hoped that the debtors would welcome him once his job/position was taken away from him. Then his master learned of the fact and praised him for his prudence… The point here is that Jesus also wants his disciples (and also us) to act wisely when confronted with a crisis in life. When he sent out his disciples, Jesus said: “Be simple as doves but shrewd as serpents” (see Matthew 10:16)! Besides prudence, the Lord also wants us to use wisely things that have been given to us: the gist of this whole concept is what we call STEWARDSHIP. Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. St. Barbara Catholic Church Promotion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists. For the first few years after Catechetical Sunday was established, national catechetical congresses were held in conjunction with the celebration. Beginning in 1971, the USCCB’s Department of Education began producing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. When the Committee on Catechesis, now named the Committee of Evangelization and Catechesis, was named by the Conference as a standing Committee, it continued to publish Catechetical Sunday materials each year.
