WELCOME TO THE 15TH RETURN
TO CAMDEN TOWN FESTIVAL
R
eturn to Camden Town Festival was
originally started in 1999 to create a focal
point for the long established, wide
spread London Irish music community who
had fewer and fewer regular music venues to
congregate in. The Festival continues to cater
to that community and has long embraced
newcomers to the tradition. Now in its 15th
year, Return to Camden Town Festival feels
more relevant than ever in providing a focus
for the large number of young Irish musicians
and music followers who have come over
in the most recent wave of emigration
to work in the capital City. You’re all very
welcome to the London Irish community
– we are delighted to have you all here.
This year’s Festival opens with a night celebrating
some of the finest young musicians around –
at The Green Note in Camden, Crossharbour
in concert (featuring multi All Ireland winner,
Orlaith McAuliffe) and at the London Irish Centre
we have an album launch/ performance by
two TG4 Gradam Ceoil Young Musicians of
the Year, fiddler, Dónal McCague (2013) and
uilleann piper, Caoimhín Ó’Fearghail (2012).
The Festival will also feature appearances by a
further two past recipients of the Award: June
McCormack (flute) and Edel Fox (concertina).
London’s very own John Carty has become
somewhat of an unofficial patron to Return to
Camden Town, having played at the very first
Festival in 1999 and most years since. This year
we will get to experience his exciting 8 piece
Festival Band and witness his involvement
in the 3rd year of the great Leitrim Equation
project alongside Séamus Begley, Dónal Lunny
plus 20 of Leitrim’s finest musical guests.
It’s all going to be fantastic – the concerts,
album launches, workshops, sessions, céilís,
singing sessions, late night Festival clubbing,
the catching up with old friends and the
making of new ones… we couldn’t even
Return to Camden Town Organising group 2013:

Laurie Harper and Kathy Walton
dream of any of it happening without the
support of our Festival funder Culture Ireland,
sponsors: John Griffin, Ardmore Group,
Murphy Group, O’Donovan Waste Disposal Ltd,
media sponsors The Irish World, The Irish Post
and our donors Macai Projects and Beckett
Homes – we are hugely grateful to you all.
This year has been particularly tough since the
loss of a large part of our public funding, the
15th Festival very nearly didn’t happen and
as it stands, it will be a challenge for us to go
forward from this point. I urge those of you who
value this unique Festival in London to buy as
many tickets for paid events/ raffle tickets as
you can and to think about any contacts you
may have for potential sponsors for next year
(perhaps even your own company) – ideas
welcomed at [email protected]
And last, but not least a huge thanks must go to
the Festival Organising Group (pictured above)
and RtCT volunteers who
make it all happen. Hope you
all have a brilliant Festival!

who may be less confident, not
so experienced or newcomers
to the session, to contribute. Play

individuals and you’ll go home
with a smile on your face. They
just make the music feel “right”.
F
lute player Mick Mulvey
contributed a fascinating
article to our 2011 festival
magazine, entitled Making musical
glue. He explained that he had
taken the title from a conversation
he and I had had at a session
one evening in North London,
when I had described the playing
of a particularly fine accordion
player and great friend of ours
as being “like musical glue”.
What I had meant by the remark
was that our friend was one of
those rare people who possess
the ability to bring more than just
their own musical contribution
to the table. When they join a
session, the musicians they are
playing with just sound, well,
4 ✦ RtCT2013
better. They bind everything
together, hence the glue.
It isn’t easy to pin down
exactly what they do or how
they do it. Technical mastery of
their instrument is a given, but
there’s much more to it than
that. They don’t take over or
direct proceedings – they are
often quite understated in their
approach – but somehow, their
playing and presence seems to
cause everyone to up their game.
The tempo becomes crisper (but
not quicker), the musicians listen
more intently to one another and
everything snaps into sharper
focus. They also take pains to
involve everyone, for example, by
encouraging those on the fringes,
I had coined the phrase several
years previously to describe the
playing of the man who is the
subject of this piece. Banjo and
mandolin player and all-round
nice guy Mick O’Connor has
been “making musical glue”
for over forty years now.
I realised when I sat down to
write this that, although I have
known him for more than 30 years,
I had never spoken with Mick
about his background or how he
came to be doing what he does.
He seems to have always been on
the scene, playing his old Clifford
Essex Paragon with a whimsical
smile on his face and regaling the
company from his endless store
of terrible (but never off-colour)
jokes during the breaks between
www.returntocamden.org
tunes. He is famed for his unique
take on the concept of punctuality,
too, but that’s another story.
I knew his age and background
were similar to mine – born in
London in the early 1950s and of
Irish ancestry – but that was about
it. So I offered him a lift to a session
recently and subjected him to the
third degree about his life; it felt
slightly odd to be “interviewing”
someone I had known for so long.
Mick, who appears in concert
this year with his old friend,
accordion player John Bowe,
and the brilliant young guitarist,
Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, was born
in Kilburn, where he has always
lived, in 1950. He inherited a love of
Irish music from his parents, who
were from Kerry and Roscommon.
They did not play themselves, but
Mick remembers their owning
many of the classic recordings of
traditional music from the time, by
the likes of the Gallowglass Céilí
Band and Jimmy Shand (another
parallel with my own life – my
uncle, who was responsible for
introducing me to Irish music,
had a similar record collection).
Growing up in the London Irish
community, it was inevitable that
the “Folk Revival” of the 1960s and
early 1970s would have a major
influence on him. Inspired by the
Clancy Brothers, Mick initially played
the guitar. However, it was the great
Barney McKenna of The Dubliners
who really fired his enthusiasm
and, in 1967, he took up the banjo.
As so many of us did, he started
seeking out the sessions where
some of the great musicians from
Ireland, who had settled in London
to work (mainly in the construction
industry) during the 1950s and
60s, gathered each week to play.
Pubs such as The White Hart
in Fulham and The Favourite in
Holloway were meccas to anyone
who loved Irish music in those days.
The number of legendary musicians
you might see and hear during a
single evening was remarkable;
accordionists Raymond Roland
and John Bowe, fiddle players
Bobby Casey, Mairtín Byrnes, Bryan
Rooney and Danny Meehan, flute
player Roger Sherlock, banjo player
Liam Farrell, piper, concertina
and whistle player Tommy
McCarthy… the list just goes on.
Mick had the good fortune
to be taken under the wing of
Tommy McCarthy, one of the
gentlemen of traditional music
(and another undoubted maker
of musical glue). Tommy was a
remarkable musician and man,
who was very influential in Irish
music, particularly in London,
where he lived for more than 40
years. I can heartily recommend
the documentary film made by
Ken Lynam about his life, Handing
Down the Tunes, which received
its UK premiere at the Return to
Camden Town Festival in 2008.
Tommy introduced Mick to
Barney McKenna and The Dubliners
and Mick embarked on what was
to become his life’s work. I had to
smile when he told me how he
had learned many of the tunes by
slowing down his vinyl albums,
as I had done exactly the same
myself. The old LPs played at 33
rpm, but most record players had
a 16 rpm setting, meaning you
could play records at about half
speed and a little more than an
octave lower in pitch. With a spot
of judicious re-tuning, you could
play along with your heroes over
and over again until you got it
right, at half the correct tempo.
All (all!) you had to do then was
practice the piece until you
could play at the proper speed.
He was obviously a quick
study. So much so, in fact, that
he won the Senior All Ireland title
on the tenor banjo at the Fleadh
Cheoil na hÉireann in 1971. As he
recounts, there were far fewer
divisions in the competitions
back then. More recently, the list
of instruments one can compete
on has expanded considerably,
but in those days, the banjo was
lumped in with the mandolins,
guitars and harmonicas in what
was called the “Miscellaneous
Instruments” category.
Nevertheless, he was declared the
winner, although he received his
award the following year; the 1971
event was postponed and the
competitions did not actually take
place until June 1972, in Dublin.
Since then, he has played at
countless concerts, ceili's and
sessions in Ireland, the UK, USA,
Canada, South Africa, Australia,
France, Switzerland, Germany
and Italy. He has worked and
performed with an enormous
variety of musicians, including
Tommy Makem, Paddy Glackin,
Joe Burke, Paddy Carty, Kevin
Burke, Brendan Shine, Dónal
Lunny and Noel Murphy.
In 1992, he accompanied
Elvis Costello in concert and
performed with Ronnie Drew
of The Dubliners in 1998.
He was a member of the great
Thatch Céilí Band during the
1980s. Named after the (now
sadly no more) Irish night club
5
FEATURE
at the south-eastern end of the
Holloway Road, the band featured
an all-star line-up, with Bobby
Casey, Brendan Mulkere and Adrian
Bourke (fiddles), Roger Sherlock
and Paul Gallagher (flutes), Tommy
Keane (uilleann pipes), John Bowe
(accordion), Kevin Taylor (piano),
Mick Whelan (drums) and Mick
on tenor banjo. They won the
All-Ireland Céilí Band title for two
successive years, in 1986 and 1987.
Mick was delighted to be among
the traditional musicians invited to
meet Irish President Mary McAleese
at a special reception held at
her official residence in Phoenix
Park, Dublin on 21st April 2004.
Surprisingly, although he
has played on a number of
recording sessions, he has rarely
been recorded in his own right.
His first recording was with the
legendary flute player Paddy Carty,
from Loughrea, Co. Galway. Their
classic album, Traditional Music of
Ireland, was released on vinyl by
Shanachie Records in 1976 and
re-released as a CD in 1998.
It would be more than 30 years
before his next album saw the
light of day. In 2009, he and fiddle
player Antóin MacGabhann, from
Co. Cavan, released Doorways
and Windowsills. A collection of
classic tunes that Mick and Antóin,
who won the Senior All Ireland
fiddle title in 1971 and 1972, had
played at street sessions and
get-togethers down the years
(hence the title), the CD also
features Marcus Ó Murchú on flute
and Eddie Whelan on guitar.
In addition to concerts, céilís
and running or playing at many
of the music sessions in London,
Mick has taught the banjo for many
years. After all this time, he retains
his great appetite and enthusiasm
for playing. Not that long ago, he
was due to go on holiday for 2
weeks and asked another musician
to cover his commitments. The
musician, who is a mutual friend,
agreed, thinking that he would
be required to play perhaps half
a dozen times. He told me later
that he had done 17 different
jobs, plus some teaching, during
the space of the fortnight. “I don’t
know how he does it”, he said.
Most recently, Mick was
honoured by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí
Éireann, which bestowed its
Bardic Award on him. The letter
notifying him of the award,
which he received at this year’s
Fleadh Cheoil in Derry, refers to
his “exceptional contribution to
the promotion of Ireland’s cultural
traditions”. Describes the man
and his music rather well, I think.
A TRIBUTE TO MICK DOHENY
I
t’s nearly a year since we heard
the very sad news about the
unfortunate, accidental death
of Mick Doheny, the landlord of the
World’s End pub and Underworld
night club in Camden – a huge lover of
traditional Irish music and a great friend
of Return to Camden Town Festival.
Mick was one of the few remaining
traditional Irish landlords in Camden
Town. As well as his regular Thursday
night session in the bar of The World’s
End, Mick willingly hosted his Sunday
session during RtCT Festival in recent
years (which is continuing to be
hosted at the venue this year in his
honour), he was also fantastically
pro-active at helping us to get our
promotional material out and about
6 ✦ RtCT2013
in Camden High Street and further
afield – his only complaint being
‘the posters are too small – I need
to put them all over my walls!’
For 10 years Mick Doheny held the
position as Chairman of Camden’s
Inner London Licensee’s Association
(CILLA) during which time he granted
support towards establishing the
Business Improvement District which
in turn has helped to cut crime
and the fear of crime in Camden
Town, has enhanced the physical
environment and promoted the area.
Mick raised thousands of pounds
for charities through the CILLA Ball
each year at the London Irish Centre,
he was a great supporter of the
Aisling return to Ireland project.
In the words of Henry Conlon: ‘Mick
will be sorely missed, by many parts of
the community and will leave his own
legacy behind. Many conversations
will be less colourful without him.
If only we all had a chance to thank
him and to have said goodbye.’
Karen and all of the RtCT
Organising Group
With kind thanks to Henry Conlon
(Dublin Castle/ Vice Chair of
CILLA) for allowing me to add
some words from his own tribute
to Mick, written last year.

BRIDIE & MICHAEL FLAHERTY
W
e have been trying to
find a suitable photo for
the Festival poster that
features set dancing for a good few
years now and we were delighted
when we found this one. It was
taken at The Forge in Camden last
year; we particularly like it because
it captures a lot of what the Festival
is about and because it features
(among others) two legendary
figures on the London Irish scene
– Bridie and Michael Flaherty.
Originally from Galway, Bridie
and Michael (dynamic husband
and wife team) have been valued
members of the set dancing
and Irish music communities for
decades. I remember I first met
Bridie when she used to bring
her granddaughter, Brooke, to
music classes run by Kathy Walton
and myself in Holloway. As with
anything she and Michael are
involved with, they were always
the most positive presence; they
spread the good word about the
music classes and so much more.
Ever since the Festival started,
Bridie and Michael have been first
to offer to help in any way they
can – selling door and raffle tickets
at céilís during the Festival itself
and year round, encouraging their
wide network of friends to come to
our events and more. The couple,
who are the most fabulous dancers
themselves, now host a set dancing
class each Wednesday at St Joan
of Arc in Highbury. It’s lovely to
see the fruits of their labours at
the Friday night sessions at the
Auld Triangle in Finsbury Park, as
new faces continue to appear in
the sets which are occasionally
danced during the evening.
Their tireless work to raise funds
for various charities never fails to
impress us – from raising money
through hosting dances to knitting
(very fine) hats and scarves. Bridie
and Michael, we take our hats off
to you and appreciate all you do.

O'MAHONY
AND
MICHEÁL
Ó’RAGHALLAIGH
Accordionist Danny O’ Mahony,
from Ballyduff in North Kerry, is a
multiple All Ireland title winner. He
presents and produces a weekly
radio programme, Trip to the
Cottage, for Radio Kerry and is much
in demand as a performer, tutor
and lecturer. His highly regarded
debut album, In Retrospect,
featuring Patsy Broderick on piano,
Cyril O’ Donoghue on bouzouki
and Johnny ‘Ringo’ McDonagh on
percussion, was released in 2011.
Danny has performed with
concertina virtuoso Micheál
O’Raghallaigh, from Co. Meath,
since 2012, when they released
their duet album, As it Happened.
Micheál, from one of Ireland’s
best loved musical families, is
the driving force behind one of
Ireland’s best up coming bands,
Providence, and a member of
the 3-time All-Ireland Céilí Band
Champions, The Tain Céilí Band.
■ TARA
CONNAGHAN
AND RONAN
GALVIN
Fiddle player Tara
Connaghan is from
Glenties, Donegal. Her playing is
firmly rooted in the southwest
Donegal fiddle style, exemplified
by Vincent and Jimmy Campbell,
Danny Meehan, James Byrne as
well as musicians from the older
generation, such as travelling
maestro John Doherty. Rónán
Galvin was born in Dublin but
is closely connected with the
Donegal fiddle tradition through
his parents, both of whom are
from southwest Donegal. Tara and
Rónán have played together for
many years and both teach at the
annual Glencolmcille Fiddle School,
run by Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí.
■ NOREEN
O'SULLIVAN
AND ADRIAN
BURNS
Noreen O’Sullivan,
from Galway, is one of the great
tin whistle players. For many years,
she has focussed on teaching
music, rather than performing. She
comes from a famous Irish musical
family; her brothers are accordionist
Seán Gavin and Frankie Gavin, the
legendary fiddle player. Noreen
was born in Corrandulla, where her
father ran a pub which was a noted
meeting point for musicians. She
has been playing since the age of 5
and has taught in the Connemara
Gaeltacht for more than 30 years.
Last year, she released her long
awaited debut album, The Quiet
House, which features guest
appearances by Seán and Frankie.

Ronan O’Flaherty. Her most recent
project, The Sunny Banks, with fiddle
player Neill Byrne, has been very
well received in Ireland and the
resultant CD was released in July
this year. Their music is a mixture
of older traditional melodies and
newer compositions, performed
with lively dance rhythms and
infused with a great sense of fun.

JOHN CARTY, DONAL LUNNY AND SPECIAL GUESTS
7.30pm ¤ London Irish Centre ¤ £13 in advance/£15 on the day. All music events for

■ LEITRIM EQUATION 3
Tonight’s concert is the culmination
of an 18 month residency in the
county of Leitrim by leading
traditional musicians Dónal Lunny
– bouzouki and guitar, John Carty
– fiddle, banjo and tenor guitar
and Séamus Begley – accordion
and vocals. A remarkable and
■
unique project, the
Leitrim Equation
originated in 2006,
when Leitrim County
Council Arts Office,
with the support of the
Arts Council of Ireland,
devised a programme
to invite Ireland’s most
respected traditional
groups and musicians to spend
time in the county working with
local musicians and groups.
The project would celebrate
music in and of Leitrim, contribute
to the professional development of
musicians and act as a focal point
for the development of music in
the county. The first two residencies
were led by traditional music ‘supergroups’ Lúnasa and Dervish. For
the third residency, Dónal, Séamus
and John were invited and were
joined by special guest, Leitrim
native and 2012 TG4 Musician of
the year, Bryan Rooney, on fiddle.
The CD of the residency, The
Leitrim Equation 3, will be launched
at the concert. Joining the group
on the night will be over twenty
of Leitrim’s finest musicians,
singers and dancers, including
Eleanor Shanley, Ben Lennon, Mick
Mulvey, Niall Keegan and Edwina
Guckian. Truly a night to remember
and a celebration of Leitrim’s
rich living musical tradition.
