Continuing a 30+ year tradition, seventh grade religion students researched and wrote an essay on a selected saint. After delving extensively into the life of the saint and composing a narrative of the important events in his/her life, the assignment carries one more obligation. On the day of the all-school Mass celebrating All Saints Day, the students dressed as their saint and processed en masse into the church. Following the Mass and presentation of the saints, a reception honoring the students, parents/ grandparents/guests took place in the parish hall. Then the students traveled to many of the classrooms and delivered the biographical sketch of their saint to other students. Spanish Classes Celebrate Day of the Dead On the Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican holiday, family and friends gather to pray for and remember loved ones who have died. On this remembrance day, family and friends hope to support their loved ones’ spiritual journey as well. This celebration is similar to those in other countries: Allhallowtide, All Saints' Eve (Halloween), All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day. Mrs. Eloina Garza’s Spanish classes learned about the holiday this week and created their version of the skull, the common symbol for the Day of the Dead. Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. ANATOLE FRANCE, Works of Anatole France In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle Ms. Cathy Jordan’s second grade class visited the Houston Zoo this past Wednesday. They actually saw all sorts of live animals, but none of the critters would pose for pictures! The consensus for the favorite animal was the giraffe, but gorillas, lions, jaguars, and other big cats were named. Prior to the visit, students researched and reported on their favorite zoo animal. Seeing and learning much on the visit, most kids The Call of the Wild were worn out by departure time. The bus ride home was quiet as most slept and tucked away their fond memories of the journey to the zoo. Giving Field Third Graders Tend to the Cabbage Patch After researching cabbage for what seemed like two hours (but was actually about two minutes), a bit of interesting information was actually found to share with the readers of the widely circulated W ildcat W eekly. While this may be written with a bit of sarcasm, our students who visit the Giving Field learn a great deal about the vegetables they plant and nurture and harvest as well as when and what to plant (seeds or plants?), what makes them thrive, and the best time to harvest. The word "cabbage" is an Anglicized form of the French word caboche, meaning "head." This lowly vegetable has been eaten for close to 2,000 years, but nutritionists/dieticians now recognize it as one of the most beneficial vegetables since it contains abundant nutrients. It’s versatile as well: its leaves may be shredded for slaw, left whole and stuffed, or chopped for soups and casseroles. Eat more cabbage! In October, fifth grade students harvested 606 pounds of sweet potatoes to donate to local soup kitchens. The harvest was even featured on Channel 6 news!
