Patient Newsletter – November 2014
Hi there. It’s that time again. Here’s a little history on the month of November. November is one of four months with the length of 30 days. November retained its name (from the Latin word novem meaning "nine") when January and February were added to the Roman calendar. I know this may not mean much to you right now, but most likely you’re going to know more about November than most of the U.S. population, so pat yourself on the back for reading this newsletter. November starts on the same day of the week as February in common years, and March every year. November ends on the same day of the week as August every year. I like to share things most people don’t. Oh yeah, it’s also Thanksgiving so make sure you remember to be with family, and have a good time. We’ll be CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day and black Friday, so check with us before the THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY… so you are adjusted before the big day. The entire staff and I wish you the best on Thanksgiving. I must say that Thanksgiving is probably one of my favorite holidays of the year because I think most people celebrate the day. There is history to the event, but for me it’s really just a time to sit down with family and be thankful for everything that we take for granted living in a first world country. Yes, sometimes even I complain about slow internet speed when I’m trying to watch something on Netflix, but then I have to remind myself that I need to be thankful that I have a home to watch this in with a fridge full of food. I never had it really rough growing up, but for a period of time I remember when my parents had to go to the food bank because we just didn’t have enough to cover all the grocery bills each month. I never really complained because it could always be worse but having a fridge full of food with organic products makes me feel thankful. I’m thankful that people before my time fought for our freedom that many of us take for granted every day and that we don’t have bombs dropping from the sky in our beautiful desert. Being thankful or having an attitude of gratitude is something that all of us need to practice on a daily basis. I like to think of three things that I am grateful for every morning and try to come up with new ones all the time. Commit to writing down three new things you are grateful for everyday for a month and I guarantee you that you will have a better outlook on life. Now for your monthly: “COOL FACTS” About The First Thanksgiving The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate Thanksgiving. They sailed on the ship, which was known by the name of 'Mayflower'. They celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day at Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, had organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast. The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, popcorn, milk, corn on the cob, and cranberries were not foods present on the first Thanksgiving's feast table. Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple syrup and honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese are thought to have made up the first Thanksgiving feast. The pilgrims didn't use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE THIS HOLIDAY, JUST UBER IT! What the heck is Uber? Well it’s an “app” based company that you can download to your phone. The company has only relied on word of mouth advertising and has grown to a 18 billion dollar value in just five years. If you have a smart phone, you can search for a new “app” called “uber.” An app stands for application, and this is a miniature program for your phone. Once you have it downloaded, you can set up your information and if you need a ride to or from anywhere you can just type in your destination and get a fee estimate. It will give you an approximate fee and let you know where the closest driver is to you and how long it will take to get picked up. The fees are about 50-60% of the regular cab fee and the drivers are just regular people trying to earn an extra dollar. Since you have an estimate of your route prior to pick up you don’t have to worry about any surprise rates. The driver is supposed to follow the GPS, so you don’t have to worry about a scenic tour when you use uber in a foreign city. There is no money exchanged, so you don’t have to worry about having correct change or cash on hand and you can even see how other passengers have rated the driver. The drivers get the regular background check and actually carry a much higher level of insurance than many cab drivers do because it is a requirement made by the company. 2 So next time you think about having a couple of cocktails while you are out with friends, try www.uber.com and download the app use this instead of a cab. Do You Know How to Sit? Your posture when seated can have a significant impact on your overall health. We have become a society of “sitters.” We sit in front of our computers, in front of our televisions, at our desks, in cars and planes, in chairs reading… we sit and sit some more, day in and day out. Believe it or not, the way you sit can have a great impact on your health and well-being. There’s even a condition called “Economy Class Syndrome” so named because it affects people who sit for long periods on aircraft. People sitting in tight, cramped seats may experience swollen ankles and Deep Vein Thrombosis, a condition that causes the formation of blood clots deep in the veins of the leg. If the clot breaks away and travels to the lung, well, you’ll be greeted at the gate by paramedics! What can you do as a sitter? How can you avoid some of the health issues linked with sitting? Adjust your chair and computer monitor, so that you are sitting as straight as you can. Ergonomic chairs are available to help maintain better posture. Make sure your back, neck, head and eyes are all facing forward in a straight line Sitting in the same position for any length of time causes fatigue; shift your body weight from time to time and monitor your posture; make sure your chair is adjusted to the proper height. Use a footrest to relieve pressure on your legs and thighs. Get up periodically to walk, stretch your legs, and give yourself a break! I recommend using our ‘SambaRx’ seat disc that activates your core muscles to stabilize the vertebra and discs in your spine. I use one at work and at my home office and without it my back will get sore within 1 hour of sitting. This is good for anyone who needs to sit for longer periods of time. 80% of Americans suffer from back pain, so make sure you use a SambaRx and use my 11 essential back exercises found on www.ultimatefreereport.com. Let your friends know about this website and if you or anyone brings in a copy of this newsletter I will even get you 20% off the SambaRx seat disc for back pain. If this won’t suffice, remember to mention your back pain on your next office visit so we can alleviate your back pain. We want you to know we are thankful for you. We want you to have a great holiday, so we share a few general health tips to do exactly that. 1) Breathe. We know the joy of the holidays can, ironically, be stressful. Families gather. Memories pop up. Too many chefs are in the kitchen. Try taking 6 deep, slow 3 breaths as you stir the potatoes or carve the turkey. It really helps calm you! Plus your digestive system gets a boost. 2) Laugh. Laughter is good for the vascular system, the heart, and the healthy function of blood vessels. It's also contagious, so when things get a little tense, laugh! See how many others join you. 3) Walk. Exercise is great for the heart, and digestion too. Take a walk after dinner. Breathe in the fresh air. Settle the food. 4) Eat. Enjoy the cranberries. They may help keep away urinary tract infections. Enjoy the potatoes. They can lower blood pressure and have vitamins for cells, nervous system and even heart plus some great fiber. A chiropractic adjustment does wonders for your whole system, too! Be sure to make an appointment soon!) Enjoy some pumpkin pie, seeds, or soup. Pumpkins offer you vitamins and fiber and even "bad" cholesterol reduction as well as a better mood. And don't forget the turkey! It's full of protein, vitamins and tryptophan, great for serotonin production for immune system strengthening. 5) Don't worry - too much! One day of super eating like one day of super dieting isn't going to miraculously change you. So eat, nap, talk, laugh, play, take a walk, watch a game or parade, cook, bake and enjoy! You and I have lots to be thankful for. Thanksgiving Jokes: Q: Why was the Thanksgiving soup so expensive? A: It had 24 carrots. Erendira (we call her “Eren”) has been working at N2Health now for 3 months. But don't let her "newness" fool you, she is already a pro. In the afternoons you will find her at the front desk and in the mornings she works on planning events and following up with patients. In her personal time you will find Eren with her nose in a book or playing at Disneyland. We are so grateful to have such a vivacious, creative, and customer service oriented member on our team! PANCAKE BREAKFAST 2014 4 Doug Motz Won The Amazon Fire HD Tablet Computer Our welcome back pancake breakfast was another hit, many of you came to our office to enjoy protein shakes or pumpkin pancakes curtesy of Morgan and Dr. C. We gave out many free treatments, which is our way to say thank you for being such a great patient. The final word by Dr. H Last month I alluded to some changes coming down the pipeline. We are happy to announce that we will be moving into a larger space at the end of spring in 2015. We love our current space too but in order to offer a true comprehensive healthcare option we need the space to accommodate those needs. We recently purchased a small piece of dirt in the complex near 47th and Washington St in the same complex as Louise’s pantry, Keller Williams and the Bank of So. Cal. This space is only 60 seconds away from our current space and we will be offering more physical therapy and have brought on a Physician and Nurse Practitioner who will be starting by the New Year. Both enjoy the comprehensive model we offer and have keen interests in using natural therapies to facilitate the healing process. I have planned on making some new additions eventually when we entered our new space but I received an overwhelming amount of interest on our online survey when I inquired about adding in medical staff to our business. I think in business, healthcare and life it is important to remember that we have two ears for listening which is why I listen and read every single answer and comment on those surveys because without your input I won’t be able to make clear choices in our company’s direction. I’ll tell you more about the construction progress and about what benefits you will receive from our new medical corporation. In health, Dr. Hashimoto P.S. That’s a new family photo to the right with a picture of us on our empty dirt lot. 5
