Over that time, she guided FIU to 22 consecutive winning seasons (1981-2003), and at least 20 victories on 17 occasions. She has led her teams to six NCAA Division I Championship berths, five postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournaments and two NCAA Division II Tournaments, in addition to winning eight regular-season conference titles and seven tournament crowns. In 2006-07, Russo joined elite company by becoming the 16th women’s basketball head coach (13th active) to win 600 career games after her Golden Panthers defeated South Alabama, 70-60, on February 16. Following the season, Russo received the Babe Didrickson Zaharias Award from the Sports Society at the 24th annual Women Athletes Reach for the Stars awards banquet on May 7 in Miami. She comes into the 2008-09 season ranked 11th among active head coaches with 611 career wins and a 571-262 (.685) record in her 29 years at University Park. In 2005-06, Russo guided the Golden Panthers back into the postseason. After advancing to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament behind the firepower of First Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection Lasma Jekabsone, FIU received its fifth invitation to the WNIT. The Golden Panthers hosted their second postseason basketball game, an overtime victory over the Big East’s Cincinnati, before falling at cross-town rival Miami in the following round. In 2001-02, Russo picked up her 500th career victory with a win over Stephen F. Austin in the Preseason WNIT. After that impressive feat, she went on to lead the Golden Panthers to their first Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament crowns and sixth NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. FIU went on to defeat Creighton, 73-58, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That season, Russo picked up her eighth Coach of the Year accolade and first in the Sun Belt. FIU finished the regular season ranked in the Top 25 in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls. The Golden Panthers began competition in the Sun Belt Conference in 1998-99 after spending eight years in the Trans America Athletic Conference. FIU finished 23-7 overall, 9-3 in the conference, and was ranked in the Top 25 for a third consecutive season. With victories over Harvard, Washington and Western Kentucky, the Golden Panthers made a third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament -- and their first as an at-large team. FIU had its greatest season in the program’s history in 1997-98 with a 29-2 record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. With a 59-45 victory over Marquette in the opening round of NCAA play, Russo earned her 400th victory at FIU. The women’s basketball program first garnered national attention in 199192, when Russo guided FIU to a 23-10 mark in the Golden Panthers’ first season in the TAAC. That team earned a berth to the postseason WNIT. One year later, she had only nine student-athletes on the roster, yet still managed a 25-6 record. FIU won the TAAC with a perfect 12-0 record and outscored its conference opponents by 29.6 points per game, while making a second trip to the WNIT. Following that season, the team received mention in both the Associated Press and USA Today/CNN polls for the first time in school history. In 1993-94, Russo led her squad to a 25-4 record and the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. The next year the Golden Panthers continued to improve. Picked as high as No. 16 in preseason national polls, FIU finished 27-5, winning an unprecedented fourth-straight TAAC regular season and tournament championship, and upsetting Old Dominion, 81-76, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Russo guided the Golden Panthers to a 12-4 conference record, winning both the regular season and tournament titles. On January 23, 1997, Russo joined an elite group of coaches, as she became only the 29th Division I coach in NCAA history to earn 400 career victories. In 1997-98, the Golden Panthers returned to the national spotlight when they started the season with an 11-0 record. Throughout the year, FIU defeated five NCAA Tournament teams (Purdue, Michigan, Georgia, Miami and Louisville). The Golden Panthers, who failed to receive a vote in the preseason polls, climbed to No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll. Russo has coached six All-Americans during her tenure and has had seven players compete professionally: Andrea Nagy (Sacramento Monarchs – WNBA), Dalma Ivanyi (San Antonio Silver Stars – WNBA), Gergana Branzova (Detroit Shock -- WNBA), Albena Branzova (New York Liberty -- WNBA), Gergana Slavtcheva (Phoenix Mercury – WNBA), Jennifer Bell (Colorado Xplosian -- ABL) and Lynette Richardson (Miami Tropics – USBL). Two of those players, Nagy and Albena Branzova, were selected to the TAAC 25th-Anniversary team. Russo began coaching at her alma mater, Old Dominion, as an assistant, following a successful collegiate career. She spent two years assisting at ODU before taking the head coaching position at FIU as a graduate assistant for the 1977-78 season. The following fall, Russo accepted the position of head coach at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where she guided the Lady Cardinals to consecutive 20-11 seasons and AIAW playoff berths. She returned to FIU in 1980 and quickly turned the program around. In 1982, FIU enjoyed its first-ever winning season, compiling 27 wins (a 20-win improvement over the previous year) and capturing a ninth-place finish at the AIAW Nationals. Afterwards, Russo was selected as Florida’s Coach of the Year. A native of Portsmouth, Va., Russo received her bachelor’s degree in heath and physical education from Old Dominion in 1975. She was one of the first female student-athletes to receive athletic grant-in-aid at ODU, and garnered honorable mention honors on ODU’s All-Time Lady Monarch squad, as voted by fans on the university’s athletic website. In 1978, she earned her master’s degree in physical education from FIU. Women’s Basketball Sun Belt Preseason Poll After finishing fourth in the Sun Belt Conference East Division last year, the Golden Panthers were picked by the coaches to finish in that same spot this season. For the voting, FIU received 43 points, five points behind third place South Alabama. Last year’s Sun Belt Tournament Champion WKU was picked to finish second in the East, just behind Middle Tennessee. Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock were tied for first place in the West Division. East Division (Points) 1..Middle Tennessee (6) 71 2. W . KU (6) 68 3. S . outh Alabama 48 4. F . IU (1) 43 5. A pair of Golden Panthers are looking to move up the all-time three point list at FIU. Monika Bosilj already sits in 5th place with 112 career three- pointers while Fanni Hutlassa, out for the rest of the year with a knee injury, will finish the season with 55 for her career up to this point. dropped 30 at Boston College including all eight of her freethrows. Return of the Panthers FIU returns two starters and a total of eight letterwinners off of last year’s team. With the graduation of Ferguson and Asha Neal and the departure of All-SBC point guard Iva Ciglar, the Golden Panthers have some huge shoes to fill. Ferguson led FIU in scoring each of the past two seasons and also ranks seventh on the school’s all-time scoring list. Ciglar ranks fourth in assists, dishing out 399 in her time at FIU. 600 Club FIU head coach Cindy Russo enters her 32nd season coaching at the collegiate level, 30th at FIU. Going into the 2008-09 season, she ranked 11th among active coaches in wins with 611. Coach Russo became the 16th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 600 win plateau on Feb. 16, 2007 with a 70-60 win over South Alabama. FIU teams have reached 14 postseason tournaments under coach Russo. United Nations Much like in the past, this year’s Women’s Basketball roster definitely has an international feel to it. Five of the 13 Golden Panthers come from outside of the United States. Two hail from Croatia and one each from Latvia, Puerto Rico, and Hungary. Tough Competition FIU will take on Auburn, the preseason No. 20 team in the country, on Nov. 30 at FIU Arena. The Golden Panthers will also take on Marist and West Virginia, two other teams that are receiving votes in the preseason polls. FIU faced three ranked opponents last season (DePaul, Florida State, and Georgia). The Bulldogs were the last team to visit FIU Arena, defeating the Golden Panthers, 70-56, on Nov. 30, 2007. In addition, FIU takes on cross-town rival Miami, traditional powerhouse NC State, and a Boston College team that finished fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In all, the Golden Panthers take on ten teams that played in postseason tournaments in 2007-08. Thanksgiving Classic This year’s tournament will be the 14th of its kind at FIU. The Golden Panthers have finished runner-up on six occasions and won the tournament five times. Last year FIU fell to Providence in the opening round, 71-60, before dropping the consolation game to South Carolina, 82-66. Other previous Thanksgiving Classic champions include American (1989), Lamar (1990), Villanova (2000), LSU (2002), Iowa (2003),West Virginia (2004), and Tulane (2006). Sun & Fun Classic This season will mark the 19th edition of the annual FIU Sun & Fun Classic. The Golden Panthers have won the tournament on ten occasions.
