Before one of the largest pre4th of July crowds, tw elve contes tants performed in close competi tion. The first prize of $10 was award ed to Shirlie Cotta, 10 year old Lawrence House guest from Low ell, who sang " I ’m A Big Girl Now.1* Lorraine Coughlin, 22, of Springfield, Mass., a guest at the Pelham, won the second prize with her ren dition of “ Begin the Beguine.” (Continued on page 14) JU L Y 3, 1946 F R E E DISTRIBUTION Trains, Buses Crowded, Traffic Heaviest In Beach History Unofficially estimated as the largest crowd in the history of Hampton Beach, upwards of 100,000 persons jammed the beach and boulevard over the past weekend. Vacationists and weekenders flock ed to the beach seeking relief from the hot inland cities and an official check of cars pouring onto the beach Saturday afternoon revealed a rate of two per second. The closing of many large indus trial plants in nearby states for the entire week of the Fourth cou pled with ideal summer weather were two principal reasons for the tremendous crowd. Chief of Police Jerome Harkness stated that he had never seen so many cars on the beach before and was backed up in his statement by residents of thirty years and more. Despite the record throng no ac cidents were reported and the chil ly waters kept bathers on the sands soaking up the sun. Only the normal flow of sunburns, cuts and bruises were attended to at the comfort station by Ruby Patterson, R. N. helping to solve the parking prob lem. Despite this new area, park ing places were at a premium and the State Bathhouses reported one of the largest days ever. T ax i D riv er Is H eld O n Charge O f Bootlegging In one of the first cases in re cent years, Walter Mack of McKay avenue and Lowell, Mass., was ar rested at 3:00 a. m. Saturday, June 29 on a charge of bootlegging. Mack, a local taxi driver, was apprehended on Marsh avenue by Federal and State police officials who placed him under arrest. At the Saturday morning session of Hampion Municipal courU Mack pleaded not guilty to charges of transporting liquor over the state An engineer from the Public line from Salisbury and reselling Service Commission of New Hamp it on Hampton Beach and asked for shire w ill make a study of water continuance of the case to this pressure on Hampton Beach this Saturday morning. These people are part of the beach. T h ey’ve been here through many years— good and bad— and, consequently, their presence has laid the foundation for the fine re sort we have today. There are still quite a few peo ple who remember when some of these establishments were just starting hut the new vacationists and the younger crowd wouldn't know about the two fires— in 1916 and 1921— that forced Mr. a<nd Mrs. W ilbur Lamb to start in all over again. Their general merchandise store is still there on the boule vard— open year round. That same fire in 1921 wiped out Buzzell’s Candy Store, first estab lished in 1917, by Mr. Charles Buzzell. A fter Mr. Buzzell's death, his wife, Grace, and her niece and hus band, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lam bert. carried on the business which is there, above Lamb’s.
