Red Iron’s Corner
Thanks to Dr. Jeff Hale, I was honored to serve as commencement speaker
for NEO A&M College. In my speech to the graduates I explained that little
shifts of three or four degrees greatly affect the place at which you end up in
life.
I originally started out thinking the speech would be something like “Dream Big” or “Reach for the
Stars,” but upon reflecting about the start of our company and our history it became clear the little
shifts of three or four degrees helped make us grow significantly.
My dad quit school in 7th grade because kids were making fun of him. He went to work in the lead
and zinc mines before being drafted into the Army. After spending 13 months on the front lines in
Korea, he returned home, married my mom, and 10 kids followed. While in the Army, dad got his G.E.D.
and learned the value of education. While working a full time job and raising the first six kids, he
managed to complete four years of night classes at NEO and earned his Associate Degree.
That shift, that change of three to four degrees changed my family’s life, the lives of our employees,
and our communities. Dad soon started Crossland Construction out of our family garage with two
trucks and one set of tools. What he lacked in equipment he made up for in determination.
Today, with exciting new technologies like BIM 3D modeling and Blue Beam, we can improve project
communication and collaboration. We are always seeking to improve in “The Crossland Way,” with
current efforts to standardize project management tools. Our new venture, Crossland Precast, will
offer new value and products to our customers. We have our first leadership group to identify the
future leaders of Crossland Construction Company. Our first intern coordinator was hired to help
invest in the 100 new interns learning their craft. Last but not least, we have a new strategic plan with
a goal of 50 by 50 – to become a Top 50 contractor by our 50th anniversary in 2027.
These things are fueling our growth. This year we jumped 13 spots to number 81 in the Top 400
contractor list. All small shifts with Big Results. Keep shifting!

The Bicknell Family Center for the Arts is nothing short of world
class. The 1,100-seat performance hall was professionally tuned to
meet every acoustical need, from a high-energy, physical musical
group to an individual speaker. There are sliding panels located on
the perimeter that can be adjusted inch by inch to deflect or absorb
sound. Curtains in the balcony can be opened just a bit, all the way,
or closed entirely for the same purpose. The incorporated design
elements create a very intimate, warm space.

Wyandotte, OK — The Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma opened a $13
million casino addition and renovation in March 2015. This 68,100
square foot space has a four lane, competition-grade bowling alley by
Murray International, a remodeled restaurant, a VIP lounge, and the new
Club 60 West, with an entertainment venue that seats 500. There are
private party rooms and a billiards and darts area as well.
Custom designed carpet is featured throughout, with LED lighting,
granite, and high-end millwork. The project architect, The Worth
Group, created a dynamic contemporary design. Their team members
were both effective and efficient in finding resolutions to unforeseen
challenges. The entire exterior received an upgrade, with aluminum
composite panels.
The original casino, also a Crossland project, remained open during
construction. Our teams communicated seamlessly with the Owner
to complete the project in phases to avoid disrupting the casino’s daily
operations. Our teams finished the project on time and on budget.

Jonesboro, AR— Crossland Construction’s strong relationship
with Kroger, the well-known international grocer, allows for
continued collaborations with them as General Contractor on
projects nationwide.
This attractive 125,000 square foot store in Jonesboro,
Arkansas had an existing foundation on the project site from
an old, torn-down shopping mall. The project team came in to
remove the existing foundation, then completely reworked the
site, poured foundations, and finally built the structure.

Pittsburg, KS— Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas recognized the
need for additional space to accommodate their constantly-advancing
healthcare technology equipment. Additional operating room space
was also needed. The new 40,000 square foot surgery center is their
largest hospital construction project since the original structure was
built in 1971.
The new center houses eight procedure rooms – five operating rooms,
two endoscopy suites, and a minor procedure room. Via Christi is
also now the home to the robotic-assisted, minimally invasive DaVinci
Robotic Surgical System. A new waiting room is located closer to
the procedure rooms, giving families of patients better access to
the physicians and nurses treating their loved ones. All pre and post
operating rooms in the Surgery Center are private. Brand new medical
equipment and state-of-the-art surgical space were part of construction.
Via Christi is a facility that provides state-of-the-art, compassionate care
to the patients of Southeast Kansas. Crossland feels honored to have
had the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of our
neighboring Pittsburg community.

Broken Arrow, OK— Crossland recently managed the major renovation
of the Reasors store in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with truly spectacular
results. In only 11 weeks, the entire store interior was upgraded with
new finishes, fixtures, and a streamlined design scheme sure to impress
shoppers. The building’s exterior received an incredible facelift, with wood
timbers, a standing seam roof, EIFS, stone veneer, and stamped concrete.
Our project teams worked nearly around the clock, six days a week, to
deliver the 78,000 square foot project on time and considerably under
budget. The Owner was very pleased and, since this project’s completion,
Crossland has started our third remodel for the chain.

The office space at the East end of the building has a mixture
of window walls and EIFS. The plant’s interior is similar to
that of a warehouse, with racking requirements of nearly 30
feet clear height.
In terms of schedule and complexity, this project had a very
tight eight month schedule, which included both design
and construction. Four of the eight months brought aboveaverage rainfall; June and October brought over nine inches
of rain to the area. However, the project team planned ahead
for wet weather and made the decision to install a mixture

of fill that included a high percentage of rock and sand, or
“Findley Dirt.” This base allowed the sub soil foundation
equipment to operate on top of the pad even after a heavy
rain. Despite the rainy conditions, Crossland was able to
complete the facility 21 days ahead of schedule.
Because the project’s location is that of a former river bottom,
the various soils required over 3,000 geo-piers to be installed
prior to the concrete foundations. Geo-piers are an efficient,
cost-effective foundation solution used on intermediate
foundations to help solve settlement problems.
Martinrea is a first-class company and a real win for the
entire Kansas City metro area. Crossland is proud to have
participated in the project.

First, our teams removed the concrete floor and poured a

On June 4, 2013 Crossland Heavy Contractors, Inc. was the
low bidder at just over $12 million. Initially, the project was over
budget. However, through value engineering, Crossland Heavy
Contractors and Allgeier, Martin and Associates, Inc. were
successful in reducing the overall cost of the facility to a new
contract value of $11.3 million without losing any major project
components.

The new facility is a precast concrete filter building with an
Actiflo Package Clarification Unit, a (4) cell sand filtration system,
chlorination and fluoridation components, various laboratories,
and office and conference spaces. One million gallons of treated
water will be stored at a time in a 100 foot wide, below ground
clear well that is cast-in-place concrete. A pre-fabricated high
service and backwash pump station was placed between the filter
building and the clear well to pump treated water through the
City’s water system and to backwash the sand filtration system.
A lagoon was also constructed in order to store backwash water,
along with various flow control units and yard piping.

Monett, Missouri— The City of Monett is home to a municipal
water system that serves approximately 8,700 people, 450
commercial establishments, and ten major industrial facilities.
The system’s average daily demand was 2.8 million gallons and
was increasing. As the demand continued to grow, the City
decided to build a new 4.0 million gallon water treatment facility.
The estimated completion date for the project was March 2015.
However, Crossland was pleased to hand the facility over to the
City of Monett on February 10, 2015.

FOR TULSA
Crossland is proud to have
been recently announced
as Construction Manager for
the remaining phases of the
‘A Gathering Place for Tulsa’
project. This momentous project
is being managed out of our
Tulsa Office, and has a strong
project team.
The project was initiated after
the George Kaiser Family
foundation donated the project
to the RiverParks Authority. The
“Gathering Place for Tulsa” will
significantly enhance the River
Parks area by adjoining three
waterfront properties together for
civil and recreational use. This
project will create an impressive
community commons areas that
people of all ages can enjoy.
Crossland considers it a privilege
to serve the community in this
capacity, and looks forward to
completing the project in 2017.
