NEWSLETTER OF
THE FEDERATION OF NAVAL ASSOCIATIONS,
NUMBER 54 Sept 2014
Registered Charity 1068708
SECRETARYS' BRIEFCASE
Robbie.R.
Once more into the fray, as they say, though who `they` actually are, or were, I
have never quite found out! Anyway, the fray in question has been finding a suitable
and financially commensurate venue for AGM/Reunion 2015. After some time and
little effort we have arrived at the Grand Burstin Hotel, Folkestone as the end result of
our labours in this venture. This grand event will take place over the weekend of Friday 8th May to Monday 11th May 2015 and a booking form etc` should be with this
edition of GE. As most of you arrive by own transport I will alert you to the fact that
car parking is normally charged at this venue, but I have arranged for this to be set
aside for us, so it will be noticed that your car registration number needs to be entered
onto the booking form. We will have our own dining area and any meetings, AGM
(Saturday 9th May 10 00) etc` will be held there too. Again there will be no charge.
One negative point to this venue is that they do `not` have any walk in showers, so
please be aware of that when considering to book or not. As usual there will be no
frills, drills, or speechifying, plus, we do not envisage holding a church service this
time. This will open up Sunday for trips out and about for those wishing to visit the
many places there are, such as Canterbury, Leeds Castle, Deal, Hastings, France, etc`.
for those who enjoy the usual `Dinner Time Sesh`, the RBL Club at Hythe is the nearest service club, being about five miles away, so a shared taxi should probably prove
quite inexpensive. The event is, as ever open to all former RN, WRNS, RM,
QUAARNS, RFA and MN, no matter whether an association member, or not, all are
welcome aboard. We will again hold our usual small raffle on the Sunday after Breakfast, the proceeds of which all go to the funds, so any spare bottles of rum etc` anyone
may have will be graciously received for this.
The last meeting of CONA in July agreed that the MSC/SCC should be an
affiliated Member to CONA and thereby allowed to attend meeting as an observer.
Proposed, Bulwark/Albion/Centaur and Seconded FNA. This was first suggested by
FNA at previous meetings, as we hold great interest in Sea Cadets, so are greatly
pleased on this. Let us hope that they take advantage of the possibilities of it. A full
copy of the CONA Minutes can be obtained from me by email on request should anyone be so interested.
There is very little to report on, other than our new Treasurer George Jones is
now in full control of the finances and now I have something less to do. Of course in
regard to AGM weekend bookings cheques/payments they must still be sent to me
initially, so that I know who is, or is not on the list. From thence they will be paid into
the main FNA Account and all bills paid through the Treasurer.
Lastly, but not least, Council Member Tony Hadley, Regulating Branch Association, is standing down due to health reasons. I take this opportunity to forward very
many thanks on behalf of the FNA for his indeed long and involved service. This
leaves a vacancy to be filled on the Council, so any Nominations, along with any proposals, etc`, for AGM 2015to be forwarded to the Secretary please.
I would like to repeat my/our request that those who receive a copy of the
Guardian Ensign please pass it on to your Members, as that is what it is for. If a copy
is required by email, Brian, Mem/Sec` and Ed`, will be most happy to comply with
your wishes.
RobbieR. Sec`.
"Old Farts"
I never really liked the terminology "Old Farts" but this makes me feel better about it. And if
you ain't one, I bet you know one! I got this from an "Old Fart" friend of mine!
OLD FART PRIDE
I'm passing this on as I did not want to be the only old fart receiving it. Actually, it's not a bad
thing to be called, as you will see.
Old Farts are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem. Old
Farts remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the
words and believe in them.
Old Farts remember World War II, Pearl Harbour, Guadalcanal , Normandy and Hitler. They
remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing.
They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam.
If you bump into an Old Fart on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Fart on the
street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Farts trust strangers and are courtly to women.
Old Farts hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is
on the inside for protection.
Old Farts get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like
any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies.
Old Farts have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their
children or grandchildren.
It's the Old Farts who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young
men and women in the military serving their country.
This country needs Old Farts with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values.
We need them now more than ever.
Thank God for Old Farts!
I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.

round ship that when this morning's contact was made Sheffield was told to disregard.
We fired Chaff, she never and she was hit. HMS GLASGOW, Sheffield's sister hip, detected Argentine Jets
inbound to the fleet. GLASGOWS electronic warfare support measures (ESM) equipment detected the Exocets
"seeker" radar, which meant that an incoming missile or missiles were heading for the ships. GLASGOW
radioed the news to the anti-air warfare coordinator on beard the carrier Invincible but,
unfortunately, the coordinator dismissed the report as one of many false missile alarms received that same
morning. HMS SHEFFIELD. Meanwhile Sheffield's radar did not pick up either the incoming planes or missiles because, at that precise moment, her satellite communication terminal was in use and that prevented the
on board ESM equipment from operating. The satellite communications link, therefore, proved incompatible
with the ships anti-missile radar, although neither the Type 965 radar or the Sea Dart missiles carried by
Sheffield were really compatible

Issue: Former forces to get help with housing and New veterans' helpline number
Summary: Thousands of veterans are set to benefit from £40 million of funding for nationwide
housing projects. Ex-armed forces personnel in need of housing will be able to benefit from
funding for life-changing accommodation initiatives across the country, Defence Minister Anna
Soubry has announced yesterday, 4 February. The new funding, guaranteed through LIBOR
(London Interbank Offered Rate) fines imposed on banks, has doubled the total amount the
government has given to armed forces’ and veterans’ charities through this scheme, which is
part of the nation’s commitment to the armed forces covenant.
Veteran’s helpline: Yesterday also saw the launch of the new veterans’ helpline number to
ensure that veterans facing any housing difficulties will be able to seek help at any time. The
new number, 0808 191 42 18, has been improved to become more memorable for veterans, with
extended operating hours to provide support for any callers in crisis. At the same time, the Veterans UK helpline has extended its opening hours to 0730 to 18:30 on working days, but to
1700 on Fridays. In addition to the extended working hours the Veterans UK helpline now also
has an out of hour’s option to connect callers in urgent need to either the Combat Stress or Samaritans’ 24hr helplines. The new number is free to call from landline phones and MOD is
working with industry to make the new number also free to call from mobile phones, it is hoped
this agreement will be in place by the summer.
The Veterans’ UK helpline has operated very successfully for many years, predominantly supporting queries around pensions and compensation claims but the helpline also helps signpost
people to other parts of government or the charitable sector for help where appropriate.

That`s one more year come and gone and here we are into 2015. It is not
too far into the future and another AGM weekend is nigh, which, as has been promulgated is on May 8th to the 11th at the Grand Burstin, Folkestone. There was a short period of two weeks last year when the use of the Hotel for the boarding of immigrants was
in the news. This, as said, was for those mere two weeks only and that situation is well
and truly in the past and done with. It is assured that that is most certainly not the case
now, nor will it be, most certainly, whilst we are there. Point being here is that if anyone
has held back from booking due to the aforesaid possibility of a repeat of such a happening I put my own assurance that it will not be so. Anyone requiring booking form/s
contact Brian, or me. Simple fact of the matter is that we have a good deal of a 3 night
weekend at £96 pp, which is extremely commensurate in light of some prices being paid
for similar weekends.
Next and very important to me is that there are a number of Associations who are seriously considering winding up their organisations this year and
promulgating the fact that this year will be their last reunion. Reasons for this are usually that there is now no one to do the organisation of either a reunion, or the Association.
This may be due to varied causes such as age, lack of members, ill health, or just no one
with the knowledge or ability to carry out such tasks. It must be stressed that there is
help available in this situation and all that is required is that organisations in said situation contact the FNA and ask. Short word ask, but much can be and is achieved with it.
If anyone is a member, or knows someone who is, of such an organisation/association in
this situation and would like/prefer it possibly live on please get in touch, as it is what
the FNA is for.
CONA appears to be doing very well and going ahead with a
fairly good head of steam, or should I say, with turbines running smoothly, or whatever
it is turbines do. The web site is now well established and on that point I would take the
opportunity to raise the awareness of our own FNA Website, which is undergoing the
process of a revamp and updating. This, I am assured will be quite soon, the web address
will `Not` change and all will be alerted through the GE, or other medium when necessary. Back to CONA and the rather important point of funding the organisation has been
debated, as without funds in any situation you actually go nowhere. Personally I see no
problem with all member associations paying a subscription payment, which is after all
the norm in such organisations. Fact is we cannot continually ask for hand-outs from
here or there. However, my own opinion and it is for associations themselves to decide
the way to proceed.
Most important point of all of this is that associations are heading on the
right course and at last beginning to make what appears to be an extremely
good attempt at working together. Exactly what the FNA has been working at
since 1991.
Last but definitely not least, I would like to again request that those
who receive a copy of the Guardian Ensign please pass it on to your Members,
as that is what it is for. If a copy is required by email, Brian, Mem/Sec` and
Ed`, will be most happy to comply with your wishes.

'Easyfundraising'
My fellow members of the FNA,
Please find enclosed in this issue of the 'Guardian Ensign' a leaflet
regarding 'Easyfundraising' and how you as individual members
and Associations can support Project MTGB 718 for free!!
All you have to do is follow the instructions on the leaflet and then
every time you or your good lady shops on-line the company that
you purchase your goods from will make a donation to the project.
So as you can see it's easy and it costs you nothing how good is
that!!
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Federation
Council and Mr. Brian Joy for allowing this leaflet to be included.
Regards Malcolm Tattersall

Let There Be No Moaning at the Bar
Old sailors sit
And chew the fat
About things that used to be,
Of the things they've seen'
The places they've been,
When they ventured out to sea.
They talked of the scran
The chef would make
And the shrill of the bos'n pipe.
How salt spray would fall
Like sparks from hell
When a storm struck in the night.
They remembered friends
From long ago,
The times they had back then,
The money they spent,
The beer they drank,
In their days as sailing men.
They remember old shipmates
Already gone
Who forever hold a spot in their heart,
When sailors were bold,
And friendships would hold,
Until death ripped them apart.
Their lives are lived
In the days gone by
With the thoughts that forever last.
Of the bell bottom blues,
Round white hats,
And good times in their past.
They speak of nights
Spent in bawdy houses
On many a foreign shore,
Of the beer they'd down
As gathering around,
Telling jokes with a busty whore.
They recall long nights
With the moon so bright
Far out into the lonely sea.
The thoughts they had
As youthful lads,
When their lives were wild and free.
Their sailing days
Are gone away,
Never again will they cross the brow.
They have no regrets
They know they are blessed,
For honouring the sacred vow.
They know so well
How their hearts would swell
When the flag fluttered proud and free.
The underway pennant
Such a beautiful sight
As they ploughed through an angry sea.
Their numbers grow less
With each passing day
As the final muster begins
There's nothing to lose,
All have paid their dues
And they'll sail with shipmates again.
I've heard them say
Before getting underway
That there's still some sailing to do,
They'll say with a grin that their
ship has come in,
And the Good Lord is commanding
the crew.
Issue: Former forces to get help with housing and New veterans' helpline number
Summary: Thousands of veter ans ar e set to benefit fr om £40 million of funding for nationwide housing projects. Ex-armed forces personnel in need of housing will be able to benefit
from funding for life-changing accommodation initiatives across the country, Defence Minister
Anna Soubry has announced yesterday, 4 February. The new funding, guaranteed through LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate) fines imposed on banks, has doubled the total amount
the government has given to armed forces’ and veterans’ charities through this scheme, which is
part of the nation’s commitment to the armed forces covenant.
Veteran’s helpline: Yester day also saw the launch of the new veter ans’ helpline number to
ensure that veterans facing any housing difficulties will be able to seek help at any time. The
new number, 0808 191 42 18, has been improved to become more memorable for veterans, with
extended operating hours to provide support for any callers in crisis.

SECRETARYS' BRIEF-
Robbie.R.
A little somewhat belated, due to some unforeseen situations to be dealt with,
but here we are again with yet another AGM weekend/get together ending up more successful than was anticipated. Some problems in the bookings etc`, not due to us I hastily
add, complicated things and actual booking in at the hotel by attendees was a bit up in
the air, again not entirely our fault, being a knock on effect of the original mix up and
the actual invoice not ending up on my desk until immediately prior to the event, however, we got it sorted `tout suite`, so all systems go from thence on. Taking into consideration we were down on numbers this year, due to a variety of reasons the event, as
previously stated, was an enjoyed success going on the reports that have reached me
from those attending. AGM was a quick affair with little to report on, but business dealt
with in usual manner, without any fuss or pomp. We did do a small raffle raising £87,
which considering some of our happy band were `lost in France` was not too bad in my
estimation.
I take this opportunity to repeat my former input, which is important at this
time in my opinion and that is that there are Associations who are seriously considering
winding up their organisations this year and promulgating the fact that this year will be
their last reunion. Reasons for this, as stated previously, are usually that there is now no
one to do the organisation of either the Association or a reunion. The varied causes such
as age, lack of members, ill health, or just no one with the knowledge or ability to carry
out such tasks is generally the problem. We stress that there is help available for this
situation and all that is required is that organisations in any said situation contact the
FNA and ask for advice. Short word, ask, but much can be and is achieved with it. If
anyone is a member, or knows someone who is, of such an organisation/association in
such situation and would like/prefer it to possibly live on longer then please get in
touch, as it is what the FNA is for.
Last but definitely not least, I would like to again request that those who receive a
copy of the Guardian Ensign please pass it on to your Members, as that is what it is for.
If a copy is required by email, Brian, Mem/Sec` and Ed`, will be most happy to comply
with your wishes. Plus, to those Members who may have let slip the fact that their Subscriptions are due, or even overdue, I would request that the wallet come out please, as
nothing actually works on nothing. Ta Much in anticipation. Sec`.
A Travel Agent looked up from his desk to see an old Lady and Gentleman peering at
the posters in the shop window advertising glamorous destinations around the world.
The Agent had had a particularly good week, so had a rare feeling of generosity come
over him. He beckoned the couple into the shop and said, “I know that you are on a
pension and could probably never hope to have a really good holiday, so I am offering
you a fabulous holiday to a top resort at my own expense and I will not take no for an
answer” He then instructed his secretary to make out two flight tickets and book the
holiday to a Five Star Hotel. As can be expected the couple accepted and off they went.
About a month later the old lady came into the shop and the agent asked eagerly, “How
did you like your holiday” “The flight was exciting, the room was lovely, in fact everything was fabulous, but I have one question, who was that old bugger I had to share the
room with”?
Nautical club closure
Dear shipmates, from being on top of the world to depths of despair.
The chap putting the money in the club for the community project to
help returning servicemen reneged when British legion said they do
same job.
No way to survive and will close in 30 days, associations can keep
their memorabilia; the rest to naval museums, any debts will be paid
when club is sold, remainder to naval charities as per the rules.
RNERA will survive in new premises: Reunions and AGM not affected, but will have to sort Xmas party out.
It's difficult for me to let 60 members not on internet before July's

them. Best wishes bob.

THE RUM LADS
Hi Robbie
I am Colin Watson from the Derbyshire Submariners, as our FNA rep, I would like to thank you
from all Derbyshire Submariners & your committee for a fantastic weekend down in
Folkestone. Looking forward to next year.
Best regards
Colin Watson.
A Few Jokes courtesy of Derby Submariners
A Gunnery Captain
walks into a bar and is about to order a drink when he sees a Chief
Petty Officer in uniform. He doesn’t have to be an Einstein to know
that the Chief is a submariner. So he shouts over to the bartender so
loudly that everyone can hear: ‘drinks for everyone in here bartender, but not for the submariner over there’. Soon after the drinks
arrive, the Submariner gives him a big smile, waves at him, then
says: ‘thanks’ in an equally loud voice. This infuriates the Captain.
He once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Submariner. As before, this does not seem to bother the Submariner. He
continues to smile, and again yells: ’thank you’, in an
equally loud voice. The Captain asks the barman: ‘what is the matter
with that submariner? I’ve ordered two rounds of drinks for everyone but him, and all he does is smile and thanks me’. The barman
replies: ‘he owns the place’.
Three Men
Awaited execution by firing squad in the condemned cell, from which the site
of their forthcoming ordeal could be clearly seen. The first, an Englishman,
was taken out and stood against the wall. As the firing squad raised their rifles,
he suddenly shouted Avalanche at the top of his voice. The soldiers looked
about in alarm, threw down their rifles and turned to run. Taking advantage of
the chaos, the Englishman scuttled away as fast as his legs would carry him and
escaped.
The second condemned man. a Scot, seeing the success of this ploy, when his
turn came shouted Flood with exactly the same highly successful effect,
and off he scarpered.
The third man, an Irishman, impressed by the initiative of his colleagues, determined to follow suit. As the rifles were raised and fingers curled around the
triggers, he shouted ‘

It was during this trip that she had a major fire in the Indian

History Newark Sea Cadets,
T.S. Newark Castle S.C.C.
There has been a Sea Cadet Unit in Newark since before the second world war
they had various locations around the town from a small Nissan hut, to an old
MTB which was berthed were the floating restaurant is now, unfortunately she
broke her back when the river was drained and had to scrapped.
Prior to1991 Newark sea cadets were known as T.S.Cumberland.
The more modern units have been based in schools and then moved onto
an old barge on the river Trent alongside were British waterways offices are
now located . At that time the unit had 10 enrolled cadets and 9 new entries,
there were four staff led by Lt (SCC) Walter Hurst RNR, and a small but effective management Committee led by Lt Austin Edbrooke RN, Rtd, and a Parents and Supporters group led by Mrs Sue Peters, the unit at that time were refitting out the barge , and the inspection report was satisfactory.
However things were to take a dramatic change ,
due to a fire in the buildings alongside the barge , the cadets and were not aloud
down to the barge , and it had to be locked, accommodation was offered by the
TA centre on Sherwood Avenue, and the unit moved ashore for the last time.
The barge unfortunately was then subjected to large amount of vandalism, the
mains generator was stolen which weighed a ton, and had to be lifted out of the
stern, our main training boat was stolen but recovered from Leicester area, the
barge was cut adrift on two occasions , and finally there was a fire onboard,
leaving us no choice but to have the barge scrapped. In 1993 it was decided to
change the name of T.S.Cumberland, to T.S.Newark Castle Which it would
hope would herald a bright future for the unit. The new location while welcome was far from ideal being one room and one office and store. And by 1994
we were down to 9 cadets and 3 new entries. However such was the enthusiasm
of the cadets and staff and her new C.O., S/Lt (SCC) Michael Reeve RNR, that
the unit was to earn its first Efficiency pennant.
In 1995 the T.A offered the unit a large Garage and offices, and a portacabin .
in the compound, and we have been there since that day,
In 1996, unfortunately S/Lt Michael Reeve had to stand down as C/O due to
work commitments
The new C/O Ltcdr (SCC)Peter Clay RNR joined and took Command, and
brought with him Lt (SCC) Gordon Vasey RNR as IstLt, ( Gordon has since
retired, but keeps a watchful eye on the unit as Vice Chairman of the Unit management Committee), Peters history dates back to C/O of Mansfield unit then
on retired list and brought back to take on the Newark unit, and he was to remain in Command until his untimely death in October,2004
What with the death of the Chairman of the committee the previous October,
this was a double blow, that not many units would have survived, but with the strength
of the unit management committee and its recently appointed Chairman, Mr, Dave
Poyser, plus the added benefit of having two strong senior officer’s who were the sons
of Peter Clay, S/lt (SCC) Paul Clay RNR, was appointed Commanding Officer ,
Chief Petty Officer Alan Clay became 1st Lt, and Chief Petty Officer Sue Peters , who
was originally on the Parents & supporters group, joined as staff and became the
Admin Officer, and with her continuity, the wheels of the unit were kept running.
During Ltcdr Peter Clays command, the unit grew to 27 enrolled cadets 6 new entries,
and a junior cadet contingent of 8.
During Peters time we have earned since 2000, three efficiency pennants and six
Burgees in a row, from the inspection this year .
We won the piping competition team for 5 years and individual for 4 years at district
level, also drill competitions in armed guard four times,
Sporting achievements have been five aside football upto National level,
And regatta pulling upto area level in three classes And recently we have started shooting, and have won our first competition at District level During the last three years we
have lost many of our cadets to the Royal Navy, who still visit the unit when on leave.
We now have boats on the Trent, berthing them at Kings Marina during the summer
months, full use is made of the boats and with the addition of our powered Viking ,and
hope to go on to better things, we also do Camping expeditions and visits to the other
units in our District, and also have a strong affiliation with Lincoln Unit. Whose Band
lead our Trafalgar day parade this year.Following Lt Paul Clays move to area staff as
deputy District Officer, we needed to find a new OIC ,this came in the guise of CPO
Phil Nelson during Phils reign we gained a burgee, unfortunately Phil resigned from
the Corp, for personal reasons .
Present complement on the books is 25cadets with a small junior section, We now have
a new Officer in Charge,Petty Officer(scc)Mark Whittaker , A very keen staff of 14
which includes a appointed Chaplain, Capt Jo Justice, of the Salvation Army. One
C.P.O’s and the rest being P.O.s, and Civilian Instructors and trainee instructor We
have a strong Management Committee, and a small Parents & Supporters group, Today we have the same Complement as the post war unit. Our main objective at the beginning of this year is to raise enough funds to purchase a new or nearly new minibus
to be able to carry on visiting units in our area and visit the coast to visit dockyards and
partake in courses. Last year we did not qualify for a burgee or a pennant, but we are
go for the awards and 2013 is a major inspection in july. At this year’s RNP we gained
a Burgee 2011. Unfortunately due to unreconsilable differences with the UMC,
P.O.Whiittaker stood down .
However there is hope on the horizon with our new OIC, Petty Officer
Wayne Marshall , who has been with the Unit since he was a junior having risen
through the ranks, it is hoped that we will go forward to better things and get on the
Burgee trail once again. The O.I.C has since changed to that of CPO sue Peters on a
temporary basis, here’s hoping for a settled period.
Potted history of T.S.Newark Castle SCC
Was originally T.S.Cumberland, changed its name in 1993
The unit was a barge on the river trent near the near buildings
just down from the floating restaurant on the opposite side of
the river,
Due to fires in the buildings close by, we were forced to vacate
the barge and seek accommodation in the T.A.Centre .. in 1994
won its first pennant
The first unit was in what is now Raleigh classroom and had 14
cadets and three staff, the 1st OIC was CPO Michael Reeve,
In 1994, S/Lt Reeve had to retire due to work commitments and
Lt cdr, Peter Clay took over on a temporary basis Lt Gordon
Vasey as his 1stLt.
In early 96 ,the unit moved to its present HQ, where we are today, in 1995 we were down to 9 cadets ,but the cadets put on
such a good show at the Inspection that they were given a reprieve. From that day the unit improved to gain strength.
In 2001 we gained our second pennant, and not dropped below
that standard since.
In 2003,we gained Burgee status .and have remained at Burgee
status ever since.
Sadly in October 2004 our Commanding Officer who came on a
temporary basis in 1994, passed away. The Commanding Officer
became Lt (scc) Paul Clay RNR
The old C/Os son, our 1st Lt is Petty Officer Wayne Marshall,
Lt Clay moved up to District,Officer, and is now a Lt cdr.
The Officer in Charge now is Chief Petty Officer Sue
Peters, in temporary Command.
We now have a complement of 15 cadets and 7 Staff.
Postscript ; there has been a Sea Cadet unit in Newark
since before the second world war , it was then the Navy
League , and in St Mary’s Church you can see the Standards of
the old units, we are now equivalent in complement to the post
war first Sea Cadet unit.
