SCMM NEWS October 2012 Southern California MINI Maniacs Vol. 10 Issue 10 IN THIS ISSUE DeGarmo attempts Bonneville’s 150MPH Club R53 swan song at Laguna Seca Students show their cars save auto shop classes Chili Cook-Off details announced Club News and more! MINI Maniacs ride the Devil’s Backbone Story on Page 2 What a view — Mono Lake can be seen in the distance from this vista on Highway 395, one of many awe-inspiring sights on the Devil’s Backbone run. MINI Maniacs do the ‘Double Crossing’ on the Devil’s Backbone run By George Marsh After seemingly endless months of anticipation, SCMM’s annual jaunt across the Sierra Nevada is now complete. Known as the Devil’s Backbone, this year’s “Double Crossing” was a four-day adventure that took the MINI Maniacs as far north as Lake Tahoe and as high as 9624 feet, while traversing California’s famous mountain range two times. Starting from Sylmar on a Thursday morning, the route followed Highway 395 north through the high desert towns of Lone Pine, Independence, and Bishop (our lunch stop). From Bishop it continued north, climbing in elevation. To the left, like towering skyscrapers, the Sierra Nevada mountain range was an awe-inspiring presence. Highest among its peaks is Mt. Whitney with its 14,505-foot summit, the tallest in the lower 48 states. Thursday’s overnight accommodations were at Topaz Lodge, SCMM News • October 2012 overlooking Topaz Lake on the ous,” said Denis Calthorpe, who donated two bottles of French wine California-Nevada border. He also (See Backbone on Page 3) SCMM member Eric Johnson, dubbed the Father of the Devil’s Backbone, welcomed the attendees and presented a token of appreciation to George Marsh and Dan Skorcz for their efforts in organizing the trip. He then introduced Denis and Iris Calthorpe, SCMM members and personal friends of Johnson who live in England and who flew to California to drive the Devil’s Backbone in a rented MINI. This is the third year that the Calthorpes have completed a Devil’s Backbone. Denis, never at a loss for words or a good laugh, was elated to see his SCMM friends again. “Thank you very much for having us back — it’s marvel- Some of the MINI Maniacs enjoying Inspiration Point overlooking Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay. 2 Backbone (Continued from Page 2) their luck in the Topaz Casino, which is part of the lodge. It was rumored that a couple of members left a little richer on Friday. Day two of the Backbone took the Maniacs over Monitor and Carson passes, with a stop at Lake Tahoe and then a brief search for the famous Kit Carson tree, before ending the day’s drive in Murphys on the western side of the Sierra. Some of the daredevils in the club stopped by Moaning Caverns to ride the 1500-foot zip line. Saturday’s drive to Mammoth Lakes completed the double crossing of the Sierra Nevada, this time over Sonora Pass. The road condition was superb and the non-MINI traffic quickly dissipated the further east the MINIs traveled. Nearing the summit the road narrowed and the grade on the descent became as steep as 25-percent in spots. The views from this height are breathtaking. Sonora Pass brought the MINIs back to Highway 395, where the caravan headed south through Bridgeport, stopping at the Whoa Nellie Deli near Mono Lake for lunch. The deli, located inside a Mobil gas station, is a well-known stop for savvy motorists and bikers in search of good food. A night at Mammoth Lakes capped off the four-day adventure starting with happy hour at the Lakanuki Tiki Bar, followed by some antics and good laughs with Shields Richardson at his restaurant and wine bar, The Side Door SCMM News • October 2012 Cafe. It seems a certain SCMM member will never let Richardson off the hook for his “noshow” at the Eagles farewell concert in London, England, on June 18, 2006. His punishment for this heinous crime: public humiliation and a mock hanging from the rafters of the Side Door Cafe. Sunday morning came all too soon and it was time Side Door Cafe owner Shields Richardson for another Devil’s of superb driving roads, spectacuBackbone to end. The MINI Malar alpine vistas, excellent food and niacs gathered at the Base Camp accommodations, combined with Cafe for a final breakfast and a marvelous SCMM camaraderie rechance to say goodbye before ally made this event special. The couple was driving over Sonora Pass in an SUV when they were passed by three “very fast” MINIs. Hours later, and many miles from their MINI encounter, they were walking by the Lakanuki Tiki Bar in Mammoth Village and noticed the large party. “I was on the patio when they walked by and Jennifer asked me what was going on,” says SCMM member George Marsh. “I explained that we were a MINI Cooper club on the last night of a road trip. She then proceeded to tell me about the three MINIs that buzzed by them on Sonora Pass earlier that day. It didn’t take long before I realized that the MINIs she described were SCMM members in the Hair on Fire group! They were a really nice couple. I invited them in for a drink and introduced them to Wolfman Dan.” Photo by Carol Vicencio THE WOLFMAN — Dan Skorcz takes his GP through SCMM members prepare for the 1500-foot line atofMoaning Caverns. thezip Streets Willow. Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Competition set for Oct. 27th Chili Ken Hamlyn Salsa June Medved SCMM’s annual Chili Cook-Off and Salsa Competition is set for Saturday, October 27th. The event will take place at the Murrieta home of club members Dick and Pat Weaver. The cook-off has been a club favorite since 2007, offering members a fun and relaxing afternoon, a twisty driving run, and some of the best chili and salsa you’ve ever tasted. This year’s Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Competition is sure to heat up following the announcement that extra money is going into the prize pool. Chili Cook-Off details CLICK HERE The contest is open to all members and the rules are simple: 1. You have to prepare the Chili or Salsa yourself. That means no store bought chili (but you can use it as a base). 2. You need to bring a crock pot and extension cord to heat your entry. 3. Chili should be fully prepared prior to arriving at cook-off. A $10 entry fee will be collected at the cook-off for each entry, chili or salsa. Ribbons and cash will be awarded to the top three entries in both categories. The amount of the money in the prize pool will be determined by the number of entries. SCMM is adding an additional $100 to both prize pools. Judging will be done by popular vote among the attendees at the event. exp. 01/13 Defending Champions DeGarmo comes up short for Bonneville’s 150 Club Jack Belcher’s Fantasy Racing Team returns to Bonneville Getting into Bonneville’s 150 MPH Club is no easy feat, just ask SCMM member Craig DeGarmo, who became the club’s second member to ever attempt it. DeGarmo returned from the recent World of Speed event at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats where his best run was 144 mph. A malfunctioning supercharger prevented DeGarmo from making his final two runs. “Well my 2012 effort to join the 150 MPH club at Bonneville is over,” said DeGarmo. “I learned a lot, had a lot of fun, but did not make it into the 150 MPH Club.” Phil Cohen helped DeGarmo in his attempt, providing the trailer, tow vehicle and support used to get to Bonneville. DeGarmo and SCMM News • October 2012 Cohen are members of the late Jack Belcher’s Fantasy Racing Team, which was formed in 2007, a year after Belcher first ran at Bonneville on the 130 mph course. “A thousand thanks to Phil Cohen, without his help, none of this would have been possible.” Twelve SCMM members, including DeGarmo and Cohen, have achieved 130 MPH Club status at Bonneville. The 150 MPH Club is the next level of achievement that a driver is recognized for at World of Speed and Dan Skorcz, in 2008, is the only other SCMM member to attempt it. Cars running the 150 mph course are required to have additional safety equipment than those on the 130 mph course. For a MINI Cooper to reach that speed, it also requires more horsepower. DeGarmo’s MINI came packing nearly 350hp under the bonnet, but horsepower alone won’t get you to 150mph at Bonneville. Drag, condition of the salt, tire pressure, air temperature — they’re all factors in the speed equation. “Will I try this again? Running on the salt at Bonneville is definitely a challenge,” says DeGarmo. “I am thinking that taller tires could possibly change the gear ratio enough so that 150 mph will be possible in 5th gear, but then it will take more time to get there. Gotta do some calculations.” 130 Club Members Jack Belcher Phil Cohen Dan Skorcz Craig DeGarmo Ken Green Sue Green Jan VanGreuningen Beth Stenmark Leon Watts Van Hazewinkel Mark Blair Ken Hamlyn 5 MINI’s R53 to leave Continental Tire’s Sports Car Challenge series MONTEREY, Calif. - Rising endurance star Chris Knox realized a childhood dream by tackling the iconic Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track in California. Knox, from Elderslie in Renfrewshire, Scotland, couldn’t wait to attack the famous Corkscrew after securing a unique driving opportunity with RSR Motorsports at the Continental Tire Sports Car Festival Powered by Mazda. The British MINI Challenge champ mobilized an army of MINI fans to back his bid to give the R53 a stunning swan song as it bows out of the Sports Car Challenge this year. He organized a fund-raising campaign that attracted fans from across the world to back his bid to drive the car at the Mazda Raceway on September 7-9 and at Lime Rock on September 28-30. The huge Mini fan base was mobilized and now the deal has been done for Chris to share driving duties with RSR Motorsports boss Randy Smalley in California. The two were back together for the first time since Chris stunned fans at Daytona International Speedway on his Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge debut in January. Despite never having seen the Daytona track before, he was the fastest driver in the team and proved he could shine on the American scene. Now he is hoping two more cracks at the Continental Tire SCMM News • October 2012 Sports Car Challenge can help him break into American racing on a full-time basis. “It was an unbelievable moment when I realized we had done enough to secure the drive,” said Knox. “I visited Laguna Seca when I was 16 and was lucky enough to walk the circuit. That convinced me that I had to race there if I ever got the chance. It has been a lot of work, but the way it has worked out has been brilliant. We wanted to give the MINI R53 a swan song - and Laguna Seca suits the car TOP: From left is Steve Lowery of O2 Motorsports, Norm Nelson of Shasta MINIs, and Chris Knox, driver of the RSR 198 MINI that is making its final appearance in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series this year. Nelson was instrumental in promoting the R53 swan song at Laguna Seca, securing a MINI Corral for attendees and getting MINI USA to display the new GP at the event. “We requested that they bring out the new JCW GP MINI and put it on display at the corral we set up, and they did so,” says Norm Nelson. “It brought a lot of interest. We had people streaming through the corral all weekend long asking questions and taking pictures, and it wasn’t just MINI owners, there were Porsche owners and the Corvette drivers too. We want to thank MINI USA for doing a great a job with great staff. They had a crew and staff there to take care of everything. My hats off to them.” 6 Laughlin Weekend returns Nov. 2-4 The wild burros of Oatman will be happy to hear that the MINI Maniacs are returning to Laughlin this November 2-4, for a twonight stay at the Aquarius Hotel. Activities will include a drive to the historic mining town of Oatman, Arizona, where wild (but friendly) burros and outlaws still roam Main Street, a sunset riverboat cruise on the Colorado River, gambling YUM! — A wild burro in Oatman enjoys a fresh carrot, courand much more. tesy of SCMM member Ellen Ramsdell. Fountain, who lived alone in Westminster, passed away sometime in July or early August following a long battle with cancer, he was 69. Fountain was the quiet type, staying out of the limelight and speaking more with his generosity — donating money to the club, participating in the Rooster’s Holiday Food Drive, and buying toys for needy children. “He told me that he wished he’d have discovered MINIs and our club when he still had his health,” recalls SCMM Vice President Dan Skorcz. “He wanted to participate in more things but just could not due to his health issues.” 7 Students show their cars to save auto shop classes By George Marsh SCMM member Jackie Tyner dreams of someday owning her own custom automotive body shop. Currently enrolled at Long Beach City College (LBCC), Tyner spends 16 hours a week in the auto shop learning the skills and techniques needed to someday reach her goal. Recognized by her instructor and peers as being well-organized and a “go-getter,” Tyner was elected president of the college’s Automotive Kustoms Club, a position that recently threw her into the middle of statewide budget fire storm. California’s community colleges lost $564 million of state funding in 2011-12, forcing administrators to make painful cuts in the programs offered to students. At LBCC, Tyner’s auto body class is one of 18 programs facing total elimination in 2013. Other programs on the chopping block are: Air Conditioning; Auto Mechanics; Aviation Maintenance; Carpentry; Computer Proficiency for Academic Success; Diagnostic Medical Imaging; Diesel Mechanics; Film; Human Services; Interior Design; Medical Assisting; Photography; Physical Geography; Radio/TV; Recording Arts; Real Estate; Sheet Metal, and Welding. “I recently moved back home from Costa Mesa and dropped out of Orange Coast College to enroll in LBCC to pursue my dream,” says Tyner, who would have to go to Cerritos or Cypress college to complete her studies if the program is cut at LBCC, but even then the chance of getting into another college is slim. California community colleges have turned away more than 300,000 students since 2009 because students cannot get into classes, according to California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott at an address he made before Pasadena City College in March and reported in the Los Angeles Times. “We should be work- SHOW OF SUPPORT — SCMM member Jackie Tyner organized a car show on the campus of Long Beach City College, where she is studying auto body repair, to bring attention to the fiscal crisis that may result in the elimination of 18 vocational training programs at the school, including the automotive repair classes.
