Horribly, it recently happened at our sawmill. But never again. Our Company was shaken in January by serious injuries to two of our family of employees. These employees are far more than safety statistics. They experienced pain and suffering, and we will do our best to take care of them. We are not treating these separate accidents, at different plants, as an unfortunate coincidence. Our pride and confidence in our otherwise exemplary safety program and award-winning record is shaken. My conclusion is that we now must be even more careful than we thought we were being. Going forward, we as managers and safety professionals must do a better job of taking care of you. At the same time, all of you, our employees, must do a better job of looking out for one another all of the time. We must also hold our safety culture and safety programs up to the light for serious reexamination. This is a shared responsibility crisis. This is personal for all of us. As to action, later is Now! A Company-wide “stop, look and listen” for safety was instituted Thursday, January 24, 2013, starting with all managers. During the following time-out, managers and other employees focused exclusively on safety and reexamined their work spaces for potential hazards not yet addressed. They reexamined processes and practices to correct anything that may put people at risk. Identified risks were dealt with then and there. That was only a start. The process continues to identify risks and to fix any problem as immediately as possible. Beyond the environmental exposures in the forest, or in our offices, or on the plant floor, or on the public highways, the other great safety risk is human behavior. We are at risk for fatigue generally because people often do not get enough sleep. We may have project fatigue which makes for haste and corner cutting. Safety devices such as control panels and electrical lock-outs may not be as convenient as they could be to encourage their critical use. There may be language challenges, or lack of training, or cases of “blind eye” when people have lived with a problem so long they can no longer see it as a risk. Whatever the shortcoming, whatever the excuse, we must overcome it. 2 ANTHONY FOREST NEWS President’s Pulpit Continued... So that there is no confusion or misperception about the Company’s values or priorities on critical safety issues, I will repeat as long as necessary the following mandatory standards of safety conduct: 1. Safety is paramount to any other business motivation. - No production issue; no start-up goal; no false sense of any other urgency trumps doing whatever it may be safely. 2. Safety is a condition of employment at Anthony Forest. - This Company is no place for people who put themselves or their fellow employees at risk. 3. If someone is injured, the very first priority is to get them the best medical care as soon as possible. - Delay for any reason cannot be justified. The perception of indifference must be avoided. 4. Do not start any machinery or process which has not first been double checked for safety; and never work on any machine which is energized unless special procedures are followed. 5. If a safety problem is spotted, the time to fix it is NOW. - Go to the root causes of whatever is causing a repeated safety exposure, and fix the cause itself. 6. Always practice communications among people working together, over and over again, regularly. Reinforce shared responsibility for one another and take advantage of the eyes, ears, and brains of the employees actually working day to day with potential problems. EVERYONE SAFETY FIRST NOW! ANTHONY FOREST NEWS 3 A Note From Aubra Remembering Barry Findley The existence of Anthony Forest would not have happened in 1965 without the guidance and “accounting” of Barry Findley. His sad passing is a reminder of the importance of loyalty, professional competence and long term relationships. The Anthony - Findley relationship spans at least three generations. Legend has it that Barry’s father, Willis, caught the Doodle Bug train on the Rock Island line south from Little Rock to the Anthony - Williams sawmill at Little Bogaloo south of Calion, Arkansas. Recently retired from the Internal Revenue Service, Willis was seeking clients for his new accounting practice. He strolled up to the office and met with Daddy Frank Anthony. Willis made his pitch, and Daddy Frank asked, “Why should I hire you?” Willis is said to have replied, “Because I know how much money you really made last year.” He wrote a number on a piece of paper and handed it to Daddy Frank. Whatever was written on that piece of paper made Daddy Frank reply, “You’re hired.” As it came to pass, Willis Findley, his son Barry, and his grandson Brian all have devoted a part of their personal and professional lives to the evolving incarnations of Daddy Frank’s family. Without them, we would not be where we are today. In Memoriam Barry Brian Findley December 12, 1935 - January 30,2013 Barry Brian Findley, 77 years old, passed from this life to the next on January 30, 2013. His beloved wife of 59 years and their five children were by his side. He was a man deeply devoted to his faith, his family, and his profession. His enthusiasm for life, and adventure, along with his spirit for service to the community made him a man of fine character and great strength. Born in Little Rock on December 12, 1935 he was the son of Willis Winn and Bessie Twila Pearce Findley. He was the youngest of their five children. He attended Our Lady of Holy Souls School and Catholic High School where he was an outstanding member of the class of 1953. He was a starting member and right halfback of the Rocket football team and associate editor of The Cicerone newspaper as well as yearbook editor. He went on to study accounting at Lasalle University and Louisiana State University. He is survived by his devoted wife Betty Jeanne Weber Findley and his children: Sharon Findley Dillard (Jim) Richmond, VA, Barry Brian Findley II (Kathy) Little Rock, AR, Deborah Findley Stewart (Terry) Austin, TX, Karrie Findley Wroten (David) Little Rock, and Rhonda Findley of New Orleans, LA. He was proud of his eight grandchildren: James and Logan Dillard, Barry and Anna Findley, Ian and Jack Stewart, and Casey and Alex Wroten. They loved "Paw Paw" and will miss him deeply. 4 ANTHONY FOREST NEWS In Memoriam - Barry Findley continued... Barry was preceded in death by his parents and three of his siblings: Arlene Findley Loomis, Willis Winn Findley II, and Sister Patricia Lee Findley O.S.B. He is survived by his sister Twila Findley Finan Scott, of Jackson, Tennessee. He was Uncle Barry to numerous nieces and nephews and was loved and respected by friends, colleagues, and business associates far and wide. He joined his father's CPA firm in 1953 and spent the next 60 years in public accounting. He earned his CPA certificate in 1959. His depth of knowledge, genius, and integrity are legendary. He was a board member and past Vice-President of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and former President of the Arkansas Society of CPAs. He served as President of the Catholic area school board and was appointed to the Catholic Diocese Finance Council by Archbishop J. Peter Sartain. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, The Serra Club, and served on an exploratory team that brought the Permanent Diaconate program to the Diocese of Little Rock. As an avid collector of Lionel Trains, he merged hobby and financial expertise into a position as a board member of the Lionel Collectors Club of America eventually becoming national treasurer for that organization. He was an enthusiastic member of the SEF Financial Club. Another of his interests, aviation, began in his youth when he learned to build and fly model planes. He was a ferocious competitor and walked away with top honors in contests around the state. In 1952 he enlisted in the Air National Guard 8154th Air Base Squadron at Adams Field. He later became a twin-engine instrument rated pilot. In the 1970s his love of competition and his need for speed brought him to auto racing. He was a top competitor in Formula Atlantic and Formula Ford racing at Midwest and Southwest Division SCCA races, and he qualified for and competed in SCCA national championship races at Road Atlanta. In 1992 he competed in sports car endurance races, including a grueling 24-hour race at Watkins Glen, NY. If his schedule wasn’t exhausting enough, he somehow found time to referee central Arkansas high school football games for 10 years. His interests were multi-dimensional and he put his heart into every endeavor whether it was for personal satisfaction or to give back to his community. He was unbeatable at chess, loved his poker crew, and for many years enjoyed lively doubles matches with his tennis buddies. He leaves behind long lasting friendships that have endured throughout the years. He was a member of St. Edwards and Immaculate Conception parishes. He believed in Catholic education and made sure his children were schooled in that tradition. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” ~ Robert Frost ANTHONY FOREST NEWS 5 Phases Three and Four Completed: The Urbana Sawmill The Urbana sawmill is up and running.
