ANTHONY FOREST NEWS 3 New Powerful Solutions™ Tools Have Arrived Anthony Forest Products introduced the new Powerful Solutions™ tools: Google Android App and Apple App which is available for iPhone and iPad. These new Powerful Solutions™ tools were designed to help designers and specifiers with the transition to the new Southern Pine design values and spans which became effective June 1, 2013. The applications calculate spans and compare grades/sizes of Southern Pine versus other species of lumber, using either the before or effective June 1, 2013 spans. Simple drop down menus allow the user to input species, grade, member type, deflection limit, lumber spacing and loading conditions. Automatic defaults are set for the most common deflection limits, spacing and loading conditions when "member types" are changed. Clicking on the Grade/Span Comparison calculator bar will allow size comparisons between different grades of Southern Pine. When using the smart phone App tools, one will be able to run the online Lumber Span Calculator in the field from the convenience of a smart phone. Even when the phone is without internet service the correct data will be instantly displayed. To download the free app, visit your Google Play or Apple App store. 4 ANTHONY FOREST NEWS Union County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Richard Crawford The Union County Sports Hall of Fame officially inducted its Class of 2013 Saturday, August 3rd, at the El Dorado Conference Center in El Dorado, Arkansas. Golfer and family cousin Richard Crawford was born in El Dorado and attended school in Norphlet grades 1-3, and El Dorado grades 4-11. He was a 1957 graduate of Springhill High School in Louisiana. While at El Dorado he was a member of State Runner-Up golf teams in 1955 and 1956. As a walk-on at the University of Houston, Richard was a member of the golf team coached by the legendary Davis Williams. While at Houston he became the first NCAA golfer to win back-to-back individual championships in 1959 and 1960. These triumphs marked the first time that anyone had earned two consecutive NCAA golf titles. Richard was a member of two Missouri Valley Championship teams and also two NCAA National Championship teams. He was selected All American in 1960 and 1961. Later Richard would play professionally on the PGA tour full time from 1964 - 1977. Once he departed the PGA tour, Richard was head golf professional at several clubs until he retired in 2005. Being placed into the UCSHoF is an accolade that he will forever cherish. “It is a great honor to be recognized by your home people,” Richard stated. “People recognize good honest, hard work. They’re really just saying to me, ‘We appreciate you and job well done,’.” Richard had no clue he would experience the kind of success that made him a worthy Hall of Fame candidate. “It’s just kind of like walking. I put one foot in front of the other and just kept moving,” he said, reflecting on his career path. “It just blossomed and went further than I thought it did. But, it didn’t go as far as I hoped it would.” Richard is the son of Alma Anthony Crawford, daughter of Frank Anthony who is the founder of Anthony Forest. Alma spent her career at Anthony Forest. SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENTS 5 Two Locations Earn Their SHARP Renewal During the summer, Anthony Forest’s Texas Chip Mill located in Troup, Texas and the Louisiana Chip Mill located in Plain Dealing, Louisiana were recertified for the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). The Texas Chip Mill was re-inspected for the SHARP Award on June 4th. The Texas OSHCON program falls under the direction of the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation. Due to new administration in OSHA, facilities that have a two year certificate are now being re-inspected after the end of the first year. Upon receiving this award it will be the Texas Chip Mill’s 14th SHARP certification and, since their first award in 1999, they have had zero accidents. The Louisiana Chip Mill in Plain Dealing, Louisiana was re-inspected for the SHARP Award on August 21st. The mill passed the inspection and was recommended for another two year certificate. The inspection consisted of documentation examination and an onsite inspection of the plant. Upon receiving this award, it will be their 12th SHARP certification. They received their first SHARP Award in 2001. SHARP recognizes small employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system. Acceptance of your worksite into SHARP from OSHA is an achievement of status that singles you out among your business peers as a model for worksite safety and health. Upon receiving SHARP recognition, OSHA exempts your worksite from OSHA programmed inspections during the period that your SHARP certification is valid.
