CEOs Tout Timber’s Advantages
By: David Showers - El Dorado News Times
Cityscapes have long been the preserve of steel and
reinforced concrete, lending a sleek and modish
appearance to urban vistas.
But can wood diversify from its stock and trade as a
residential building material and reach into the urban
marketplace? The presidents/CEOs of Anthony Forest
Products and Deltic Timber Corp. sure hope so.
Speaking Wednesday, October 16, 2013, to the state
Legislature’s Joint Committee on Agriculture, Forestry
and Economic Development at the El Dorado Conference
Center, Aubra Anthony Jr. and Ray Dillon explained how
wood is poised to expand its building material market
share.
Aubra Anthony, Jr., President & CEO of Anthony Forest Products Company .
It aligns with the “Wood is Good” mantra that prefaced Dillon’s remarks. He playfully encouraged the
legislators to print their emails and pay their bills through the mail, hoping the attendant paper use will
jolt a flagging timber and forest products industry, the downturn of which has been inextricably linked to
the housing market collapse.
Both men’s presentations showed how housing starts dropped to Depression-era levels during the Great
Recession, falling from 2 million per year to 500,000. Dillon, the head of El Dorado-based Deltic Timber,
said a recovery is several years away, predicting a rebound to 1.5 million housing starts by 2015.
But wood was losing market share when construction was brisk, as more homes were being built with
steel, concrete, plastic and other materials.
“We had a problem even in good times,” said Anthony, the head of Anthony Forest Products and an
industry advocate, serving as one of 19 directors the Secretary of Agriculture appointed to the National
Softwood Lumber Board (SLB).
Anthony said the industry has rebranded itself as the green building material, touting wood’s capacity to
reduce carbon dioxide levels and leave a smaller carbon footprint than competing building materials.

Log Resource is Key
The Anthony Forest Urbana, Arkansas sawmill has the fortune of a log
resource enabling us to pull a higher percentage of dense select structural
and Machine Stress Rated (MSR) lumber grades.
“We fall way to the right of the bending stress curve of a normal
distribution which allows us to capture that very high grade dense lumber
for our customer base,” stated Kerlin Drake, Vice President of Marketing
for Anthony Forest.
Our Urbana sawmill was one of 20 in the Southern Yellow Pine producing
region that installed MSR machines in 2013. “With the reduction in design
values for visually graded lumber, we
Excellent log density
chose to optimize our excellent log
resource into high grade MSR lumber instead of it falling into a visual grade
bucket with the bending stress range of 1,100 psi or less for #2 dimension
lumber,” Drake stated.
2013 was the year of changing design values for the Southern Pine lumber
industry making it so important to optimize beyond visually graded lumber. The
new “global” values for visually graded #2 Southern Yellow Pine lumber were
reduced up to 27% for bending design values (2 x 4 #2 now 1100 versus 1500 psi).
In October 2013, Random Lengths Vol. 69, Issue 40, concluded, “Logs available
don’t yield much MSR.” In response to this article, the Structural Building
Components Association (SBCA) published some observations on the Random Lengths article.
2400F - 2.0E MSR lumber
In summary, SBCA stated, “One conclusion is that this must mean design values are mill-specific and lumber coming
from any given mill cannot really be assigned a global visual design value for the entire species population, even
though that is what the ASTM (American Society Testing Materials) standards, the lumber industry uses, states
should be done.”
The take-a-way from both of these articles is our Urbana sawmill is blessed with an excellent high quality log
resource which allows a large percentage of its lumber production to qualify as dense and MSR grades of lumber.
For more information regarding MSR Lumber, please contact Russ Kimbell, Lumber Sales Manager, at 800.221.2326.

Android App and the Apple App (available for iPhone and iPad)
were developed to help designers and specifiers with the
transition to the new Southern Pine design values and spans
which became effective June 1, 2013.
On July 12, 2013, the Anthony Online Lumber Span Calculator
was released to our company website. Since its release date,
there have been a total of 23,959 requests; that is an average
of 139 requests per day.
“Requests” are defined as the number of times the website has
been generated (every time a calculation has been run).
Our smart phone App for Android was released in the Google
play App store on August 5, 2013. There have been 900 total
downloads since the release date; that is an average of 6
downloads per day.
The App for Apple was released in the iTunes App store on
August 12, 2013, and since its release date, there have been a
total of 1,409 downloads; this is an average of 10 downloads
per day.
“Downloads” are defined as the number of times the App has
been downloaded from the App store (Google Play or iTunes)
onto an Android smart phone or onto an Apple iPhone or
iPad.
The success rate of our new Powerful Solutions™ tools could
not have been made possible without our customer base.
With their help and support of communicating our Powerful Solutions™ tools to their customers, we were able to
significantly increase the number of customers reached throughout our cyber space world. Please continue the
good work with the span calculator communications. It is imperative that we continue to spread the word since
not all code jurisdictions have made the transition to the new design values and spans.

Drew’s Poem
Drew Hooper, a 9 year old third grader at Nash Elementary school in
Texarkana, Texas, had a writing assignment which received much praise
from his teachers.
The assignment was to compose a cinquain. A cinquain is a five line poem
with gradually increasing syllables in each line until the end, where one word
is used. This form of poetry is very popular because of it’s simplicity.
Drew chose “tree” as his subject. The poem may only have five lines but it
has a very strong beginning and end.
He is the son of Amy
Anthony Hunter and
Roger Hooper, Jr. Drew’s grandfather, Luther Clary
Anthony, Jr., currently serves on the Board of
Directors of Anthony Forest Products. Great
grandfather, Clary Anthony, Sr., is Board Chairman
Emeritus.
