A Message from Fr. Frank
Dear Friends and Benefactors:
It is hard to believe that on April 22, 2015, in the Chapel at St. Charles Hospital more than 500 people gathered to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Hope House Ministries. Never did I think that 35 years later, I would
be the steward and shepherd of this extraordinary ministry to the poor, wounded, and broken among us.
On April 22, 1980, a few hundred people gathered in that same chapel to pray for a ministry that was just
beginning. So much has happened during these past 35 years. Thousands upon thousands of people have
been touched, healed and transformed. That in large measure is due to God’s grace and the extraordinary
people who have used their gifts and talents to bless this ministry for more than three decades.

On our anniversary, I announced that we will be returning to where all of this first began. I was blessed 35
years ago to rent the guesthouse at Little Portion Friary on Old Post Road in Mount Sinai. After 80 years of
ministry, the Anglican Franciscan Friars will be returning to their motherhouse in San Francisco. They no
longer have enough Friars and finances to maintain their ministry. Thanks to Divine Providence, the generosity of the Franciscan Friars and our benefactors, we have been able to purchase the 4 acres that contain their
wonderful buildings. This gift will allow us to better serve the broken and addicted young people entrusted to
our care and to provide greater opportunity for community education and spiritual growth and development.
The Anglican Franciscan Friars have blessed our community for more than 80 years. Out of respect and gratitude, we will maintain the “Brothers Bakery,” the prayer labyrinth and leave the chapel open for members
of the local community to pray. We will call the new community Hope House Ministries-Hope Academy at
Little Portion Friary. We hope to make the transition to Little Portion Friary in the fall.
In May, we were blessed to celebrate three graduations from St. Joseph’s College. Two young men had
transitioned home. One will be going to law school in the fall and the other will be going to graduate school
for clinical social work. Our third graduate continues to live in community, giving back by the power of his
example. He plans to continue his education and attend graduate school in January.
All of our programs continue to be filled to capacity. Each entity continues to touch people in miraculous
ways that oftentimes are beyond words. Those daily miracles happen because of the extraordinary support
we receive from you.
Pax Christi continues to minister to a growing number of homeless men in our midst. What is shocking is
the growing number of young people between the ages of 16 and 25 that are living on the street and battling
addiction. We have also seen a tremendous rise in the number of returning veterans in need of a wide range
of human services, especially mental health services.
Our counseling center continues to do extraordinary work with people of all ages that are struggling with a
wide range of mental health issues. The Sister Jean Beagan, OP Family and Children’s Center has seen a great
increase in referrals for small children and families in crisis.

Montfort Therapeutic Residence continues to work with troubled adolescents who are already involved with
the court system. Our unique approach to treatment attempts to break the cycle of negative behavior and
help them to develop positive decision-making skills that will ensure a more productive future. Our Lady
of Peace Academy is our on-campus junior-senior high school that provides a very powerful opportunity to
stay in school and graduate.

Annual Endowment Fund Event raises over
T
$243,300!
he Hope House Ministries Endowment Committee hosted its 13th Annual Endowment Fund
Event on Thursday, March 12th at the beautiful Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, New York. This
year’s gala was successful in raising over $243,000, bringing the thirteen year event total to over
$3 million!

together in celebrating Hope House Ministries’ 35th year
of service to the community and honoring the Ministry’s
founder and Executive Director, Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM.

took to the stage to express their deep gratitude to Fr. Francis,
the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and the innumerable

35th Anniversary Mass Celebration and Volunteer Appreciation Reception
As our Ministry has the good fortune to celebrate 35 years of service to the Long Island community, a celebratory mass and reception was held in honor of this momentous event! On Wednesday, April 22nd, the
Chapel at St. Charles Hospital was filled with over 500 friends who gathered to share a truly blessed evening. Fr. Frank welcomed special guests, including the iconic Andy Cooney, and the Hibernian Festival
Singers. Fr. Frank shared his gratitude to all who have made this achievement possible and reminded us
of stories that have changed the lives of so many individuals, children and families in need.
Following the mass, there was a Volunteer Appreciation
Reception held at the lovely Lombardi’s on the Sound, Port
Jefferson. Each year this reception is held to honor the 300 invaluable
volunteers who assist in all aspects of the Ministry. Their devotion and commitment is
an inspiration to us all. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the countless
benefactors, volunteers and board/committee members who selflessly continue to share
their time, treasure and talents in support of our Ministry! Also, we’d like to extend a
special thanks to the Lombardi Family for lending their support for this event.

Siena House continues to provide safe haven for a growing number
of women who suffer at the hands of domestic abuse and violence.
Unfortunately that waiting list is growing every day because of
the need.

St. Louis de Montfort Academy provides a quality alternative high
school experience for the growing number of students who find
traditional high school overwhelming. It also provides a high school
equivalency program and a college prep program.
Hope Academy/The Community House is the heart and soul of our
ministry. It is where it all began-our waiting list is growing exponentially every day. The need for residential addiction treatment is
at an epidemic level. Every day I see miracles happen, lives changed
and transformed. But the lack of beds is a contributing factor to the
senseless loss of life among our young people.
As we celebrate our 35th anniversary, I am humbled. I am profoundly grateful for all that this ministry has done and is continuing
to do for those in need. So much of what we accomplish every day
is thanks to your support.
Please be assured of my continued prayers for each of you. Please

Charles Rampone
Board Member Emeritus Charles Rampone, a true pillar of the
community, has given immeasurably to our Ministry. His kind
spirit and faithful heart have touched an infinite number of
people in need.
Bishop Murphy
visits
Hope House
On February 19th, Most Reverend William
Francis Murphy, D.D., S.T.D., the fourth Bishop of the
Diocese of Rockville Centre, made his first visit to Hope
House Ministries. Bishop Murphy had an overflowing schedule that day, touring each program, celebrating mass and
having lunch with the Community House residents. Upon
finishing the tour, Bishop Murphy shared that he hadn’t realized how expansive our Ministry was and that he was overwhelmed with all that we are doing. He offered his blessings
for the Ministry and for all who help make this possible.
Charlie dedicated his time, talent and resources to benefitting
our agency in any way that he was able. Annually he supported
the Endowment Event, Golf Outing and Holiday Party through
in-kind support and/or monetary assistance. Additionally, he
spent a great many hours assisting Fr. Frank and other board
members, helping to guide the ministry through decision making
and leadership.
Mr. Rampone was married to Lillian Rampone for 58 years until
she passed away in 2008. Together they had 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Recently, Charlie joined
Lillian, leaving a legacy of kindness, caring, and compassion.
We are so thankful for having known and loved this great and
gentle man. Fr. Frank shares, “Charlie Rampone was an extraordinary man. I have known him for more than thirty years. His
random acts of kindness and compassion were legendary in our
community. He truly led by the power of his example. The
world is richer by far because Charlie walked among us.” Rest
in peace, Charlie.

On Monday, May 11th, 148 golfers supported Hope House
Ministries’ 24th Annual Golf Classic, held at the picturesque Port
Jefferson Country Club. The dedicated players started the day with
a delightful breakfast and ended it with a sumptuous cocktail hour
and dinner provided by the very professional staff of the resplendent
Lombardi’s on the Sound. At mid-day the participants were treated
to a lavish lunch compliments of Pace’s Steak House (Hauppauge),
including heavenly sliced filet mignon and grilled chicken sandwiches.
The proceeds of the event were enhanced by the kindness of the
golfers who generously participated in the exciting live auction
bidding. We were also blessed by the kindness of Roanoke Sand &
Gravel Corp. as the Cocktail Hour Sponsor.
The Hope House Golf Classic Committee would like to thank our

In honor of Hope House Ministries, the ladies of Beta Sigma Phi’s
Xi Master chapter graciously shared their time and talent once
again while hosting their annual fundraiser which raised $13,750.
Over 200 people gathered on April 16 for a Dinner Dance and Your
Choice Auction at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, NY.
The “Hats Off Derby Party” was hosted by Horsin’ Around-K&I
Productions, who generously donated the racing event. Guests
enjoyed the excitement of a pinewood-style derby horse race along
with a derby-themed hat contest. We extend our gratitude to all who
generously donated gift items, gift certificates, and underwriting for
the event’s Your Choice auction.
A special thanks is extended to the additional sponsors who

As a family at Hope House Ministries, we feel blessed to continue
serving nearly 2,000 individuals, families and children in need each

healing and self-sufficiency.
The Community House
“Hope for a Second Chance”
Our Community House, the heart of
our ministry, is where it all began over
35 years ago. Here, broken, wounded,
discarded young men are given a second
chance to get back on their feet again.
Over the years, this miracle transforming thousands of teenagers, brings to them the sense of belonging and
family unity. No matter what the problem or burden, every teenager
leaves a little richer and able to make the world a better place. These
“burdened kids” need our love and support to start over again.
Since its founding in 1980, the Community House with 10 beds has
grown to a 30-bed house that provides a compassionate approach to
crisis intervention and a residential community for homeless young
people in need. It offers a creative living space where a young person
can grow and develop. The program assists in the formation of a life
plan with short and long term goals and promotes the development
of interpersonal skills.
Due to the growing need for the services offered through the
Community House, we expanded in 2010 to include additional
residential care through St. Francis House.
As a link to educational needs for some members of the Community
House as well as children in area school districts, St. Louis de
Montfort Academy was created. Montfort Academy is our free
standing alternative junior-senior high school. Individualized
instruction and private tutoring are provided by qualified teachers
according to each student’s needs. Montfort Academy’s staff consists
of a principal and volunteer teachers.
Additionally, from this outreach Hope Academy was formed. This
program is a long-term, non-traditional residential treatment program for addiction (minimum 12-18 months).

providing services to help each person build a solid foundation for
their emotional and intellectual growth to give each young person
the life skills and encouragement they need to foster self-discipline,
self-motivation and a greater independence.

It was a cold, winter night in
February of 1990, when a man who
was infamous for sleeping along railroad tracks froze to death in his
cardboard house. His tragic passing
forced me to look more seriously at the problem of homelessness in
one of the richest counties in New York State. Homelessness does
not have a certain color, race or religion. It is not a certain age group
or geography. Pax Christi Hospitality Center is our creative response
to homelessness. It is not a social band-aid, but rather a powerful
attempt to break the shackles that imprison a growing number of
people of every age and background. Each guest is empowered with
the tools not to be homeless, but rather to become life-giving, participating members of the community.
This twenty-five bed emergency center for men over 16, provides
those in need on Long Island a compassionate, temporary residence
offering three components: shelter and food, human needs and services, advocacy and networking.

The Human Services Center
“Providing Hope through Compassionate Care”
Growth, recovery and counseling
have gone hand in hand from the
start of our ministry over 35 years
ago. We base our care and concern
on the individual needs of our clients
and therefore treat them accordingly
through comprehensive, compassionate counseling. Staffed by a host of highly qualified professional
counselors, the Human Services Center serves thousands of adults
and young people in the course of a year. Included in the counseling
services are individual, marital and family counseling, addiction
counseling including alcoholism, co-dependency, eating disorders
and sexual abuse. The center also serves as a meeting place for various
therapy groups and several twelve-step programs.
As we became more aware of the large number of children and families in crisis seeking assistance through our Center, with the help
and outstanding efforts of Sr. Jean Beagan, we opened the Children
and Family Counseling Center. Later named The Sr. Jean Beagan,
O.P. Family and Children’s Counseling Center of Hope House
Ministries, this outreach is dedicated to the growth and development of children, age two through adolescence. Both individual
and group parenting classes and counseling services are provided.
Through this program several hundred families receive services each
year. In addition to assisting children through counseling, these
programs help by enhancing the ability of parents to provide
opportunities for children to live, love and work with a sense of
mutual well-being.
Another beneficial counseling/treatment program that was born from a great need is
The St. Maximilian Kolbe Outpatient Addictions Treatment Center which provides
comprehensive outpatient services for people motivated to enter and sustain recovery.
Through individual and group counseling sessions, each day struggling addicts reclaim
their lives.

Siena House and Wisdom House
“Hope for a Self-Sufficient Life”
Siena House
Twenty-seven years ago I became overwhelmed with
the growing number of unmarried teenage mothers
and pregnant teenagers as well the escalating number
of physically and emotionally abused women. Siena
House was created to respond compassionately to their needs. In our short history, hundreds
of women and expectant mothers have had a chance to grow and become self-sufficient.
At Siena House we are committed to empowering every woman to be all that she can be.
Since 1988 Siena House has given women a better chance of beating the odds. Our goals
include providing a home for mothers and children in a stable, consistent, drug-free and violence-free environment. We assess the needs and capabilities of the young woman through
careful interviewing and consultation with family and other community resources. We also
encourage continued education. In addition, we provide an experience of independent living, including budgeting and money management, and they also receive training in new baby
care and a sense of personal self-worth through the experience of community living.
Siena House is a home for women and women with children, 21 years and older, who have
suffered from domestic violence and/or are in crisis or transition. BE A LINK TO THEIR
FUTURE by helping us offer a safe, supportive environment while empowering women to
move toward independent living and permanent housing.
Wisdom House
Throughout recovery programs we have noticed the growing
need for transitional housing. As a way to support those who
are transitioning from homelessness, addiction or those just
needing a “leg up” following a crisis in their lives, we formed
Wisdom House. This is a residence designated for long-term
needs of both men and women 21 years of age and older, who
find themselves in a situation of crisis or homelessness and are in need of a semi-structured
living environment. The goal of Wisdom House is to help the individual make a transition
into a state of independent living.

foundation for each individual’s emotional and intellectual growth.

Suffolk County Homemaker Units
Donate Blessing Bags
Miller Place Homemakers’ Community Service Committee member, Lynette LoPiccolo, delivered over 45 Blessing Bags filled with
regular size toiletries for the young men at the Community House.
Additional trial size toiletries and paper goods were donated to Pax
Christi. Father Frank spoke to Lynette at the time of drop off and
expressed his thanks to the Miller Place Homemakers.
Deer Park Homemakers donated 96 Blessing Bags and North
Shore Homemakers donated 130 Blessings Bags filled with trial size
toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors etc. for the Pax Christi
Hospitality Center.
In addition, 14 units of the Suffolk County Homemakers’ Council
donated wrapping paper, boxes, tissue paper, tags and bows to be
used to wrap Christmas presents at Hope House Ministries.
Hats off to these units for their generous donations which make a
difference in the lives of so many.
St. Louis de Montfort Parish’s
Overwhelming Generosity!
The practice of giving one’s “Time, Talent & Treasure” is no better
illustrated than by the parishioners and staff of St. Louis de Montfort
Roman Catholic Church in Sound Beach. The congregation wholly
embraces this life of stewardship and in so doing is continually
overwhelmingly generous to Hope House Ministries. A great many
have devoted countless hours volunteering at our Ministry and a
great many support Hope House by participating in our numerous
events; then, they forge on with individual monetary donations and
parish collections. Their latest collaboration was hosting a concert
in conjunction with Hope House. In celebration of Hope House
Ministries’ 35th year of service to the community, St. Louis de
Montfort Church hosted the Anniversary Concert on April 25th.
Irish performers Kathryn Smith, the Paddy Ryan Band, and the
Hibernian Festival Singers entertained a full house with a spectacular
performance. The “Celebration in Song” concert itself raised almost
$2,000! Afterwards, on behalf of the parish, Pastor Fr. Charlie Papa
surprised Fr. Francis Pizzarelli by presenting him with a check for
$35,000! The entire Hope House Ministries family offers its utmost
gratitude to all for their perpetual help!

Car Clubs Help Pax Christi
The
Antique
Automobile Club
of America, the
largest organization devoted
to the old car
hobby has many
local clubs called
Regions.
The
Peconic
Bay
Region, that covers the east end
of Long Island,
is a very active
club that sponsors many tours,
meets and parades. This year, knowing that Pax Christi was in need
of bath towels, Joseph Indusi, President of the Peconic Bay Region,
asked members to bring any gently used towels, to the St. Patrick’s
Day Dinner and meeting. The response was quite gratifying with
many members bringing new towels and Joe estimates that they
collected well over 200 new and used towels. The next day, Joe and
Karen delivered them to Pax Christi as shown in the photograph.
The Cadillac and LaSalle Club (CLC) is an antique car club specifically for those who appreciate and collect the Cadillac and LaSalle
brands of antique cars. Every year the CLC has a national meeting,
known as the Grand National, where Cadillac and LaSalle cars
from all over the world are judged and displayed. In July 2014 the
Grand National was held in Lake George, NY. At the Spouse’s Tea,
Karen Indusi explained how Pax Christi Hospitality Center helps
the homeless by providing food, a shower, a safe place to stay and
services to end the cycle of being homeless. Karen asked that members drop their unused shampoo bottles, soap and other toiletries
into a box at the registration table in the hotel for Pax Christi. The
response was overwhelming and several full boxes were collected.
After returning to Long Island and bringing them to Pax Christi,
Karen was told that they had run out of soap and were sure glad that
she arrived with just what was needed.
It seems that people from near and far, from different backgrounds
and interests, step up to support those in need.
Thank You Hauppauge Public Library!
In the Spring, the staff at the Hauppauge Public Library collected items from Hope House Ministries’ Wish List as part of their
Community Service Project for their Employee Assistance Program
Wellness Week Celebration. This generous gift of mixed toiletries
was greatly appreciated and distributed for use by the Community
House residents and guests of the Pax Christi Hospitality Center.
Thank you all for your efforts on behalf of those in need.

The 5th Annual Rally for Hope, a tennis charity event generously
hosted by the Eastern Athletic Club in Blue Point, New York, was
held on Saturday, March 28th. Using a tournament format for the
first time, over 50 players and spectators turned out to support the
work of Hope House Ministries. This year’s event was successful in
raising $3,000, bringing the five year total to over $13,500!
We extend our warmest appreciation to all who contributed to the
event, especially the event sponsors: Eastern Athletic Club, Port
Jefferson Sporting Goods, and Long Island Tennis Magazine. A
special shout out to Michael Hoffner who worked closely with the
Eastern Athletic Club to help coordinate the tourney.
