NECC Chairman Summer is here and things are “Hot” at the Chamber. We just experienced our Spring Wine Gala Dinner & Auction and the Summer Golf Outing has declared its winners. Both events were fun, exiting and rewarding for our members. Summer has just begun. Although the season has just begun, there is more. Soon it will be Tennis Masters time and once again the Chamber is hosting our Women’s Open & Legislative Golf Outing. These events are great networking and sponsoring opportunities that are designed to grow your business. I encourage every member to participate and expe- a member’s thoughts “Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great.” Orison Swett Marden As a member of the NEC Chamber, I can honestly say the opportunities exist; you just need to get involved! The Chamber creates opportunities for networking, volunteering, professional development, personal development, charity involvement and much more. As a member, you have to make the decision to make the most out of what the chamber offers or let others create opportunities while you observe. I know John has worked hard at creating a professional Chamber that we can all say we are proud to be a part of. I can honestly say that I promote the Chamber to my clients because I am a proud member who believes the Chamber is beneficial in many ways. The Chamber has brought many opportunities into my professional career including the involvement of the Business Expo/Career Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce rience all that your Chamber has to offer. They don’t call Warren County “Ohio’s Playground” for nothing. Get out there. Get involved. Grow your business. And don’t forget your sunscreen! It’s gonna be Hot! Get Involved~Stay Involved! Fair, Leads Exchange, Emerging Leaders, and BASH’s. While being involved in these activities through the Chamber, I have met many professional contacts as well as established long-lasting relationships. I have been actively involved on the committee for the Expo and Emerging Leaders. The Business Expo/Career Fair held in April at the Great Wolf Lodge was a success for its first year with engaging speakers, over 80 participating companies, and an overabundance of volunteers. The feedback the committee heard at the event was that NEC Chamber held the most professional Business Expo/Career Fair in the area compared to other chambers. Now that is something to be proud of! The Emerging Leaders Group developed for professionals from ages 21-35 is being viewed from outside communities as the leading edge on the younger generations. We have incorporated social events, effective networking techniques, and educational opportunities. Being involved on these committees has helped establish myself as a leader in the community. As the NEC Chamber relates to my career as a Human Resource Sales Consultant for Express Personnel Services, I have found the Chamber to be helpful in many areas including community involvement, website features, and a place to gather general information. Website benefits include a directory of company members, calendar of events, postings, and details on upcoming events in the community. If I ever need anything, and I mean anything, I can always rely on the staff at the NEC Chamber to point me in the right direction. I have worked with Express for almost 3 years and it has been one of the most rewarding careers. Express is a Christian based company that was started over 20 years ago out of Oklahoma City and is now the 4th largest human resources solutions companies in the United States. Express employees are energetic, fun, encouraging, helpful, and always keeping the client as number one priority. I feel that the NEC Chamber brings me the same amount of comfort and professional support needed to conduct business in the community. I am not your typical sales representative who pushes my product/service; I take pride in my work, staff, company and results. My final words of advice…… GET INVOLVED! Kindra Beck Express Personnel Services [email protected] june 2007 We Mean Business Insights from your Chamber Business Advisors Being a Woman and “The Boss” in the 21st Century Eugenia P. Roberts, DDS with Roberts & Roberts DDS I began my professional dental career almost 30 years ago, when there were only 2% women dentists in America and even fewer of them owned their own business. The 20th Century business climate for women, especially professional women, was far from inviting. A female role model or mentor was non-existent. I am happy to say that the last decade has seen huge changes in allowing women equal footing in business. This is especially true in small businesses, where women are excelling as owners, executives, and managers. Unlike the past, women are not entering the business world today to mix work and home life convenience. On the contrary (as any woman entrepreneur will tell you) home life is greatly inconvenienced by business ownership! In spite of this, the desire for self-determination and control, mixed with ability and ingenuity, drives women in this new millennium towards their individual business endeavors. In hopes of helping other female business professionals, here are a few things I have learned after 30 years of being “The Boss.” Think “forward.” As a young business owner starting out, I unfortunately thought in the “reverse”. I knew more of what I did not want - rather than what I did want- in my business plan. Part of this had to do with the climate of my profession; years ago, patients came to a dentist’s door and we did not seek clients by marketing, advertising, or promotions. In order to develop a unique business image and product position in today’s fast paced, educated consumer world, businesses need to think in a “forward” direction. By creating an active marketing plan, a defined mission statement, and product branding using the latest technology, such as e-mail and customer savvy websites, we can proactively reach our target markets. Seek out a mentor, colleague, or advisor. I attribute my long term business success to partnering with professional accountants, attorneys, bankers, and financial planners (most of whom are women!). These advisors’ experience and counsel guided me in reaching both my business goals and my dreams. Professional school did not teach me business management, but it did teach me to surround myself with others who would take over where I lacked knowledge and confidence. I find this a wise business decision, especially for a young entrepreneur just starting out, because ignorance in these areas can be very detrimental and expensive to any type of business! and exceed our clients’ needs in the new millennium! Eugenia P. Roberts, DDS 11907 Montgomery Rd. Cincinnati Ohio 45249 513-697-1211 www.robertsdentalgroup.com To connect with a Chamber Business Advisor, call the Chamber. Be prepared to list the nature of your business difficulty or opportunity, what kind of advice you need, and how and when an advisor can reach you. A Chamber Business Advisor will contact you to set up your free consultation. If you would like to be a Chamber Business Advisor, call Daniel or Kathy at the office main line, 3360125. Synergize with other business women. In my professional office, we have three women-owned businesses: my dental practice, an accounting firm, and a massage therapy center. Developing synergy with other business women is a positive growth experience for everyone involved. It has helped me to reach out to others who share both my business and my life perspectives. By joining network groups and clubs and subscribing to business women journals, you will be able to share your successes, failures, and ideas with other business women who understand the challenges of balancing personal and professional priorities. Keep evolving. The most important thing that I have learned in my years of being “the boss”: be ready, willing, and able to continue learning, changing and growing. Business ownership is an evolution of ideas and trial and error experiences. In dentistry, like in many other businesses today, technology is exploding and patient/ client desires and expectations are very different today than they were even a few years ago. In order to remain strong, women-owned businesses have to not only keep pace but meet www.necchamber.org the navigator Safety Town Rolls Ribbon Cuttings into Deerfield Township Kidd Coffee - Twenty Mile Station & Robert Lucke Interests Celebrate! What a surprise...there was NO RAIN this year. In fact, the outing was the “best”. Good weather, good turn out, good time. The golf was excellent with Crooked Tree in great shape and the event was well organized and executed. It was well worth the time off my busy schedule to network and have fun at the same time. I don’t know about anyone else, but in that timeframe I received one lead and made one appointment, golfed, ate, and had fun. Not all bad, for a days work! I asked this question at a recent Leads meeting, and not a single hand was raised. Although, the Bahama’s was suggested, I felt a little bit of Internet 101 may benefit my fellow chamber business members. As the internet has fundamentally changed the way we run our businesses, it may be of interest to understand this very versatile and efficient marketing tool. If you’ve ever purchased anything online, chances are, you were using a vertical destination site. If you’ve ever done any research, chances are you were using a VDS. Allowing you to compare different products, prices, services, and providing you with different places to find information, some vertical destination sites are household names such as Ebay, Amazon and Lending Tree, which are examples of consumer VDS, while Myspace, YouTube, and even the new CincyMoms are destination sites for networking and sharing of information. Destination sites typically have millions of pages indexed for search engine optimization (SEO) and are likely to pop up with a keyword search. Buyers want quick, short, immediate results, and traffic patterns only validate this trend. As a marketing tool, here’s why vertical sites are considered very practical and why you may want to try and take advantage of them: a shoe store owner, wouldn’t you rather be at a location where there will be a lot of shoe-specific shoppers? It’s like more fish in a smaller pond on the worldwide web. When a buyer is doing a search on the internet, rather than typing “www.bestshoestoreabc.com” in a browser , which is tedious, most just type in simple keywords like “shoe stores”, and because of SEO efforts, “Heaven” will show up on the first page of search results. What does this mean for businesses looking to do B2B? As access increases, so does the use of the internet and it is critical to realize these facts: 9 out of 10 business buyers will start with the internet and they will use search engines and vertical sites to find products, services and information. Over 90% of the click-thru’s on Google will be on one of the organic results (first page of results) while only about 6% will click through on the sponser links (pay-per-click programs)* Using keywords or descriptions, the buyer in 2007 is not picking up the phone to order a brochure anymore. They are not getting out of their seats to walk to the other side of the room to pick up a catalog. They are at their desks, coffee shops, rec centers, libraries, living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms surfing the internet and whatever information is on the web that they find, is where the buyer will be. Imagine a mall with only shoe stores. From high-end to low-end and everything in Without knowing your URL or your busibetween, it’s all shoes, all the time. The ness specifically, but knowing a potential owner of the mall, who is going to call this customer is shopping shoes, can your place “Heaven”, invites any and all shoe shoe store be found if it’s not at the shoe stores or related shoe products or services mall? As you consider more e-business to have a store in the mall for FREE. In methods to help grow your business, a return the mall does a lot of advertising to website alone is not enough. The “shoe mall” is the equivalent to a vertical destination site. So, if the mall is advertising itself, and offering free space, how does it generate revenue? Selling ad space within the mall is the most obvious way. Another way is by offering premium positioning in the mall, more commonly referred to as ranking.
