It’s been an on-going debate in the sourcing community for some time, but Google finally answered the conundrum in its Search Quality Highlights: 50 Changes for March blog post. “Improvements to handling of symbols for indexing. [launch codename “Deep Maroon”] We generally ignore punctuation symbols in queries. Based on analysis of our query stream, we’ve now started to index the following heavily used symbols: “%”, “$”, “\”, “.”, “@”, “#”, and “+”. We’ll continue to index more symbols as usage warrants.” Undeniably it appears Google has already begun to index the above mentioned symbols, and this can be used as a sourcing advantage. Email addresses and tweets are now at your fingertips. To further show how Google has been indexing these symbols, check out the following queries at Bing and Google: AIRS Sourcing SuperStars Don’t forget to Play AIRS Sourcing SuperStars challenge every Friday at 12pm ET. Questions will be posted to http://bit.ly/AIRSBlog All winners will be posted at: http://bit.ly/AIRSWinners Bing shows no results for @, which means this is not a character being indexed currently. The first person with the correct answer each week will win a seat to one High Impact Learning Series (HILS) class of their choice. These course dates, times and descriptions are available on the AIRS website: http://bit.ly/AIRSHILS AIRS HILS classes cover topics ranging from mobile recruitment and building custom search engines to filetype searching and college recruiting strategies. AIRS will make the final determination on the weekly challenge winner. All AIRS Sourcing SuperStar challenge winners will be highlighted on the AIRS Training Blog. AIRS Sourcing Report 05.2012 A deeper dive into the search at Google reveals results without the need to surround our query with quotes, which once helped retrieve punctuation. In this case it is clear that Google’s index, unlike Bing’s, recognizes @ symbol. www.airsdirectory.com [email protected] 1.800.466.4010 5 The Punctuation Enigma continued Due to Twitter’s @ and # signs being an imperative form of communication for their site, the fact that Google has indexed the symbols gives you an opportunity to search much more than simple phrases. The @ symbol, as shown, will retrieve Twitter handle results which will prove to be useful in targeting specific information. Notice if quotes are added around the Twitter handle, for example, that the results at Google do not change. Searching for email addresses, however, still require quotes, as adding quotes will help broaden your search. This could be due to the mysterious asterisk that acts as a wildcard to retrieve the unknown terms. Despite the “432,000,000” results that Google claims to have in its index, Google will never show more than 1,000. A further scroll through the results exposes that Google has only retrieved 105 results with this particular query. AIRS Sourcing Report 05.2012 www.airsdirectory.com [email protected] 1.800.466.4010 6 The Punctuation Enigma continued With the addition of quotes around the quest for university email domains, Google has retrieved over 51,000 results; however notice again that the engine chose to only display 556. There has also been some debate over Google indexing the backslash \. It does, but not the forward slash, as discussed in Google’s March blog post. With the recent change to Google’s algorithm, it will still take several months for search results targeting symbols to improve, though it is indeed something to look forward to. For example, notice that in this search the search term \resume can be used to target results for resumes. The result pool is still small; however, since this symbol is new to the index crawler stay tuned for more results using Google!
