Facebook has made changes that have left users either jumping for joy or a bit confused. We will review some of the more impactful changes already in effect and others that are coming soon. Subscriptions In This Issue Changes at Facebook – An Overview_ ___________ 1 AIRS PowerBreak Series_ ____ 2 Facebook has rolled out the ability to subscribe to non-friend feeds. By allowing others to subscribe to your feed, you can share information with a broad audience while keeping personal updates to your network. For example, a recruiter could post job openings publically while posting personal information privately. This is a great feature for those who don’t want to mix the private with the professional. Once you’ve initiated the feature, others will be able to subscribe via the button on the top right hand part of your page right next to the add friend button. However, previews show an incredible personal page set up as a scrapbook of your life. Previously, users shared information via a feed with the most recent comment first. AIRS PowerBreak Series The AIRS monthly PowerBreak Series features a free, 30 minute topic specific session. October 2011: Saving Bookmarks to Folders, the Web and Multiple Browsers October’s class will show you how to leverage bookmarking of your advanced Boolean across multiple browsers for safekeeping and sharing. This class is on Friday October 21, 2011 at 2pm EST. Now, each user can choose a cover picture, special stories as well as application information. For example, if you want a story about a significant milestone or job information to show up on the page instead of your lunch options, it will appear front and center allowing you to manage your social imprint and reputation. Newsfeed Ticker The newsfeed ticker is a continuous update inside Facebook while you work on other things within the site. It contains activity stories such as friend comments, likes, and event information. The difference between the ticker and the “recent story” section is that the latter shows only actual stories which could include updates, photos, links and videos. All you need is a free Wordpress account. Find Out Who Shares Your Information Ever wonder who is sharing your information? Now, Facebook shows you exactly who shares your links, updates and other information right under each status allowing you to track a facet of your social impact. As each friend adds information to their profile that correlates with you, they are added to a smart list. You can edit or add people to a list accordingly if you need to increase the accuracy of your list. Close Friends & Acquaintances Facebook now includes additional lists identifying those who are considered to be “close friends”. Their updates will appear more frequently in your news feed and with greater importance. Those who you consider to be “acquaintances” will only show major announcements. This is a fantastic way to organize your feed to ensure you see what is truly important to you. One recruiter was talking about how it is best to contact her via Facebook or LinkedIn as she doesn’t respond to voicemails or phone calls as quickly. Another said he has gone back to the phone as his communication tool of choice with his candidates as they are thankful to get a phone call from a recruiter versus a text or email. It’s an interesting concept in this ever evolving world of technology. It seems like the talent acquisition world continues to exhaust resources in search of the holy grail of electronic tools that will create the most successful outcome of hiring the best talent, when the original recruiting tool still leads to the best results. The discussion emphasized the importance of engaging a variety of tools to reach the target audience while remembering the core principles of the hiring process… people and relationships. In building relationships with people, it is crucial in this high tech world to have “high touch”. Think about it, in today’s world, the number of emails and texts that are processed far exceed the number of phone calls exchanged. Picking up the phone could build the relationship that is the deciding factor for a talented individual to join your company instead of a competitor! Yahoo People Search is a site you may want to add to your sourcing repertoire for finding people on the web. We can search by name and location, or even to locate a potential email address. Let’s take a further look. http://people.yahoo.com/ Notice when we press “Search” that Yahoo creates some specific Boolean for name searching, how clever is that? Let’s take this same search to Yahoo’s main Search to see if we can locate one of our other trainers, Kristin Lyon. SEARCH String: first:”Ryan” last:”Phillips” city:”Helena” state:”MT” SEARCH STRING: first:”Kristin” last:”Lyon” city:”Denver” state:”CO” http://search.yahoo.com/ Remember, when we conduct a search at Yahoo, we must type in yahoo.com/search. We are going to use the same people search Boolean we learned at Yahoo’s People Search to find Kristin. Let’s take a look! A s we have stated in many AIRS’ classes it is difficult to XRay Facebook to find useable candidate results. This is because an XRay is only able to search the results found in the public domain and added to the search engine’s database; an XRay is not able to dive into a particular site. This means that rarely are individual people results yielded from XRaying Facebook. However, we have discovered an XRay that does work and thus are excited to showcase the search string below. This string will find local talent on Facebook fan pages. It targets local chapters of organizations, associations, societies and alumni. The string currently yields 83,000+ unique fan pages. inurl:pages site:facebook.com (intitle:organization OR intitle:association OR intitle:society OR intitle:alumni) (intitle:chapter OR intitle:chapters OR intitle:section OR intitle:sections) We recommend adding “slang” geography keywords to find groups in a target zone.
