Welcome, welcome, welcome!
Welcome. My name is
Candis Kirkpatrick. I work
for the members of Tourism
Moose Jaw… and for you, the
guests to our city. You’ll find
me in Mac the Moose’s back
yard, in the Tourism Visitor
Centre, just off Highway #1
and Thatcher Drive East. My
“Can’t-believe-how-lucky-I-amto-have-this-job” job is to head
up the organization and, in
doing that, to make sure I have
the best people working with
me and for you. And I do!
While the buck might stop at
my desk, I can’t take credit for
all the good things that come
out of our office. That would
go to Michelle Blakley and
Pat Matwe, our permanent
staff and all of the summer
staff hired in May and June.
Together we keep the Visitor
Centre open year round, closed
only on Christmas Day. We
extend our hours from May to
September because that when
most of you come to see us. We
attend trade shows to tell you
why you should make the trek
to Moose Jaw. We publish this
annual Visitor Guide, which is
full of interesting tidbits and
helpful information. We try
to beat the cold in October
to decorate our grounds
with literally thousands of
Christmas lights for you to
enjoy. We proudly boast about
our city aboard our replica 1911
electric streetcar and at night
we get your heart pumping as
you enjoy our weekend ghost
tours. Our Ambassadors walk
6
the summer streets helping you
find your way. And we’re the
official home to not only Mac
but also a Tutor jet, painted
in the prestigious Snowbird
colours.
But most of all we blatantly
brag. About our city, about
our members, about why you
should not only come here
but stay here. We’ll tell you
about how to get pretty much
everywhere from here and we’ll
tell you things about places to
go and things to do that will
take you off the beaten
track. We might even send
you out of town – as long
as you promise to come
back!
So, while I might be the
captain of the ship, I am
only a small part of who
we are. Come in and
introduce yourselves.
We’d love to welcome
you to our city!

Check Out Our Valued Members
Tourism Moose Jaw is proud of its members
– those businesses who recognize the value
of tourism for the City and the role Tourism
Moose Jaw plays in promoting “Saskatchewan’s
Playground”.
That is why we want you to know who they are.
The best way, we decided, was to come up with a
recognizable symbol that, once seen, will alert you
to the fact that the business displaying it is one
of our members. You will have met them on our
website, seen their literature at various trade shows
attended by Tourism Moose Jaw, and picked up
their brochures at our Visitor Centre but now, you
will be standing at their front doors, knowing that
you will be welcomed inside.
The symbol is of Mac, the World’s Largest Moose,
Tourism Moose Jaw’s mascot and Moose Jaw’s most
recognizable citizen. “WELCOME! We are a valued
member of Tourism Moose Jaw” is imprinted on
his body and he stands on a pedestal which
asks you to “Come in & Say Hello”. Please do
exactly that. On some pedestals you will see
additional information as members may choose
to take part in varying initiatives with Tourism
Moose Jaw – Board Member – Trolley Advertiser
– Mini-City Advertiser – Christmas Tree Sponsor
and Greeting Guests with Gusto Participant.
2012, this membership year, appears as well. As
Mac stands for tourism in Moose Jaw, so do our
members. It is fitting that he represents them.
When we say that our members are ‘valued’ we
are completely serious. This business of promoting
our incredible city is made much easier with the
support of tourism minded businesses. One might
wonder why banks, insurance agencies, government
agencies, organizations or service clubs would
want to be a member of a tourism organization.
All of these members have seen the incredible
growth of this industry in our city in the last 20
years. They want to see their hometown or adopted
city continue to prosper and they know that
tourism is one avenue that will make that happen.
Others are a natural fit for tourism – Attractions,
Accommodations, Food & Beverage and Retail.
Without all of them we wouldn’t exist. Although
the cost of membership with Tourism Moose Jaw is
very affordable, the revenues generated from it and
the associated member marketing opportunities is
critical.
These marketing opportunities are tied in to
various levels of membership. We have our basic
Baby Moose Membership which includes the
standard benefits of brochure distribution through
our Visitor Centre, a listing in the annual Visitor
Guide and a 25 word description and picture of the
business on our member-only website,
www.tourismmoosejaw.ca. Following are the
Mama Moose and Papa Moose levels which have
additional benefits including trolley and minicity advertising, an individual page on our
website and a free map ad in the Guide.
Membership is easy to achieve by simply calling
306-692-0555 or emailing exdir.tmj@sasktel.
net. We’ll answer your questions and send you
a package and application. All you have to do is
provide us with your information, give us a great
picture of your business and a fantastic description
of what it is, send a supply of your brochures, flyers,
etc. to the Visitor Centre and hang your “Valued
Member” symbol in your window.
Look for the “Valued Member” symbol throughout
the city. These are our members and they would
love to say “Hello”!
8
What shall we do today? This will be one question that you will not
have a problem answering while in Moose Jaw. Not only are there a
multitude of activities to keep you and your family and friends busy
for days – and nights – most of them are within walking distance
from wherever you are. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well,
resulting in a unique blend of offerings. 0

Don’t miss a ride on the Trolley
“Rummmmble, Rummmmble” goes the Trolley
“Ding, ding” goes its bell.
“All aboard!” shouts the conductor .
And all you have to do is sit back and immerse
yourself in Moose Jaw’s past and present, hearing
tales of wealth, despair, scandal, love lost and the
entrepreneurial spirit. The old girl doesn’t have a
bad seat and no weather stops her from showing
you our unique city.
All aboard the Trolley!
The daytime tours start in May, leaving from the
Tourism Visitor Centre on the corner of Thatcher
Drive East and Highway #1. A second pick up point,
midway through the hour long tour, is added in
July in August, departing from downtown. You get
dropped off where you got picked up so planning
is easy. Tickets are available at either place or by
calling 306-693-8097.
Once you’ve stepped off, you’ll want to go again,
just in case you missed something. Moose Jaw
is known for its beautifully preserved heritage
buildings, its grand CPR homes, intriguing
attractions and adaptive reuse and you ‘ll hear
about all of this and much, much more.
We suggest making the Trolley your first stop in
the City. We guarantee our tour will make your
visit even more interesting.
Wait! There’s more! Back for its 4th season is the
popular Hobnobblin’ with the Hobgoblins’ Ghost
Tours - on board the trolley, Fridays and Saturdays
in the dark of night. If you’re fascinated by campfire
ghost stories, you’ll love hearing about Moose Jaw’s
haunted hangouts, ranging from restaurants to
businesses to attractions and personal residences.
Book early to reserve your seats on Moose Jaw’s
most popular attraction on wheels.
We’re not done yet! We can hold up to 34 people
which make us ideal for special trips. Group rates
apply for 15 or more riders, and for kid’s groups,
we throw in a free seat for the chaperone. We have
hosted reunions, conventions, staff parties, school
trips, bus tours, senior’s groups, VIP excursions
and everything in between. Our charters have also
been the first ride for newlyweds, picking them
up from their I do’s, taking them for pictures and
dropping them off at the reception. If you just want
to get from point A to point B, we can do that too.
We’ll pick up and drop off and pick up and drop off
and pick up and drop off – you get the idea. What
better memory than your own unique experience
aboard a replica 1911 electric street car?

Mae Wilson Theatre
TICKETS: 306.693.4700
217 Main St N. | Moose Jaw, SK
The Mae Wilson Theatre is a testament to the
thriving cultural life of Moose Jaw.
The theatre is one of three buildings that comprise
the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre.
“It’s being used the way it was intended to be used,
which is as a place for the community, as a whole,
to come to and embrace. It’s now, I would say, a
vital part of the scene here in Moose Jaw,” said
Graham Hall, the executive and artistic director of
the cultural centre.
Wilson was from Moose Jaw originally but had a
successful and lucrative career in theatre.
“He talked with Larry and Larry said he would
donate the central portion, which was the old
Capitol Theatre – which he owned – he would
donate that to this group, with only that one
provisor: that it would be named after his
mother, who really got him going. That’s why
it became the Mae Wilson Theatre as opposed to
The Capitol,” Hall recalled.
“It’s a remarkable story,” said Hall. “It’s one of the
great success stories of Moose Jaw really.”
Moose Jaw Tourist Guide 2012
City’s artistic awareness overflowing
Now the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre is the
epicenter of culture in the city.
The Conexus Arts Centre houses artist studios and
an artist in-residence room upstairs. The main floor
has an art gallery. The McCaig Family Wing on the
far right side holds the bar and a film-editing room.
The Mae Wilson Theatre has 420 seats and is
consistently in use.
Until 2004, that wasn’t the case. The theatre was
originally designed in 1913 but didn’t have its
grand opening until 1916 when it opened as the
Allen Theatre. It was renamed The Capitol in 1922.
Truly it is one of the most beautiful theatres in
Saskatchewan and one of Moose Jaw’s many gems.
Austin Davis, Moose Jaw Times-Herald
In 1983, the demand for a modern movie theatre
was too strong and the theatre became the Capitol
3 Theatre. As a subdivided triplex, the theatre could
seat 652 people.
The theatre closed in 2001.
“It was just not being used at all. It was almost
derelict, really, said Hall. There were three
buildings. This end of it was an old Army and
Navy store, which was closed and in bad repair.
Then there was the cinema, which was closed and
full of pigeons. Then there was the A and B store
down at the end that was also closed. The whole
thing was just empty and badly in need of repair.”
The late Gary Hyland was able to organize the
people and the funding to make the Moose Jaw
Cultural Centre a reality. He went to all levels of
government asking for money.
The governments responded that they needed
proof that this was something the community
really needed. He campaigned and raised around
$1.5 million from the people of Moose Jaw.
Without him, this would never have happened,
Hall said. Hyland was also instrumental in getting
support from Larry Wilson.

Need Info? Ask Me!
Picture this. You’re a guest in our
City. You’ve checked into your hotel
and have headed downtown. Wow!
Its great! All the heritage buildings,
eclectic shops and restaurants. These
are apparent, just from taking a short
stroll. But, what about those Tunnels
of Moose Jaw you’ve heard so much
about? Where’s the famous Temple
Gardens Mineral Spa? Casino? Western
Development Museum, which you’ve
been told not to miss? The trolley
has just rolled by but where do you
get tickets on it? Is it the same one you
take to go on one of the
ghost tours?
As the questions start to
mount up, you notice a person
walking down the street in front of you.
Emblazoned on the back of his shirt is, “Need Info?
Ask Me!”. As you get nearer, you see “City of Moose
Jaw Ambassador Program”. Fantastic. Before you get
a chance to ask your myriad of questions, they turn,
smile and ask if they can be of any help. You have
just met an Ambassador.
We want you to experience everything there is to see
in our city. We don’t want you to miss a thing. So,
we’ve put knowledgeable ambassadors on the street
to anticipate your questions and to load you up with
information. Not only will they point you in the
right direction, they will tell you where you should
stop between here and there. They’ll give you a
supply of brochures and the Visitor Guide so you
can plan the rest of this day and tomorrow. If they
don’t know the answer to your question they will do
their best to find it.
So don’t keep wondering. Look for the shirt, look for
the smile and ask away!
Summer fun with art
Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery gears up for 2012
On Canada Day, Crescent Park is transformed into
an eye-catching display of arts and crafts for the
annual Park Art community event.
The event is held on July 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $3 for adults and children under
12 are free.
It’s a fundraiser for the gallery that goes towards
educational programming that supports children’s
education and art.
On this day, as you stroll through the park, you
can expect to see up to 70 crafters, from the Moose
Jaw community and other areas of the province,
showcasing their artistry in the form of paintings,
ceramics, jewelry, wood crafts and stained glass.
Some of last year’s crafters included Rob Froese of
Moose Jaw, who creates Japanese style pottery and
Over the Hill Orchards from Lumsden, who sold
cherry baked goods such as jams, frozen pies and
chocolate covered cherries.
There were also hand-made cards by
Rachel Barkaie and organic bug spray made by
Willow Tree in Moose Jaw.
“It’s a big community event,” said Ross Melanson,
administrative assistant for Moose Jaw Museum
& Art Gallery.
12
The event draws 4,000 people to Crescent Park,
located on the 400 block of Langdon Crescent.
There are performances by local artists including
fiddle playing and guitar selections.
Children can also have some fun with hands-on
activities from noon to 3 p.m.
Melanson said that people should come out to Park
Art to get great art, support artists and students in
the community.
A day after Park Art, children and teenagers of
Moose Jaw will get a chance to learn about art,
culture and history at the Summer Art and
Culture camp.
The program is offered from July 2 to Aug. 31.
The children are split into various age groups.
Christy Schweiger, education co-ordinator at
Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery, said that the
program for the three to 12 year-olds will focus on
the art, culture and history of a certain region of
the world. She added that the teen programs focus
on their artistic development.
Registration opens in June at the Moose Jaw
Museum & Art Gallery. Scholarships are also
available for those who qualify.
For more information on Park Art, contact
Melanson and for more information on the
Summer Art and Culture Camp contact Schweiger,
both at 692-4471.

Three great facilities to golf in Moose Jaw
Being on vacation means relaxation and what better
way to relax, enjoy some beautiful sunny weather
and enjoy the friendly city of Moose Jaw than
with a round of golf at one of the three great golf
courses within the city?
onto Thatcher Drive until you reach Fourth Avenue.
Turn left onto Fourth Avenue and head south for
one kilometre and you should be able to see the
club house on the left hand side.
Hillcrest Golf Club
The Deer Ridge Golf Course is along the Manitoba
Expressway East as you come into the Friendly
City from Regina. The 2,985-yard course meanders
along the river and bluffs of the valley.
The Moose Jaw Golf Club began in 1913 as a
nine-hole course laid out in Ross Park donated by
H.Y. Smith. The course was expanded in 1919 to
an 18 hole, par 72 layout. Although the name has
changed several times, it still remains a great course
that has hosted many provincial tournaments,
beginning in 1922 with the Saskatchewan Open
Golf Championship. The Hillcrest is projected to
host the 2013 Saskatchewan Junior Championships
as part of its centennial celebrations.
An adult can golf for around $40 during the week
for 18 holes on the course that has a tranquil
atmosphere along a spring creek, rolling hills and
lush fairways on the nearly century old course.
Deer Ridge Golf Course
With plenty of trees, a river and target size greens,
this course has a challenge for everyone. The 18hole, grass green course is rated 57 for men and
56 for women. It consists of one par 4 on the front
nine and two par 4s on the back nine, the rest are
par 3s. The signature hole is number three, a par 3,
168-yard layout that plays over water to a slightly
elevated, well-treed green.

The Hillcrest Golf Course is located at the corner of
Thatcher Drive East and Main Street North (1599
Main Street North) and is only a short 35 minutes
drive from Regina.
Lynbrook Golf and Country Club
The Lynbrook golf course is one of Saskatchewan’s
oldest golf courses, founded in the early 1900s. It
is a public course, a true prairie course with almost
6,000 yards of open, rolling fairways bordered by
prairie grass roughs. The challenging course offers
smaller greens and water hazards.
An adult can golf for approximately $34 (green fees)
from morning to twilight seven days a week. Men’s
par is 71 while the ladies par is 75 on the course.
The club also offers tee time reservations three
days in advance, putting green and driving range.
Power or pull cart rentals are available. Lessons are
available as well.
For more information or to book a tee time, contact
the Lynbrook Golf and Country Club at (306) 6922838 or visit them online at lynbrookgolf.org/index.

Golfing in Moose Jaw.
The course offers a driving range, power carts,
club rentals, a licensed snack bar and an outdoor
patio. The green fees are $18 for nine holes and $25
for the full 18 holes. Tee times are from dawn to
dusk, seven days a week with the season running
from April to October.
To book a tee time or for more information about
the course, call (306) 693-4653 or check their

River Course is a great place to learn the game of
golf, introduce children to the game, enjoy a family
outing or sharpen those iron skills.

Wakamow Valley – a jewel in Moose Jaw
As it still is today, Wakamow Valley has always
been a gathering place as long as there has been a
community called ‘Moose Jaw’ – even longer.
Before the European settlers arrived, First Nations
were already using a couple spots along the valley for
winter shelter on the Plains, as well as for easy access
to food and water.
It was for that same reason, during the Great
Depression of the 1930s, that men travelling in
box cars would take to the valley’s Plaxton’s Lake
waterfront at the point where the two tracks meet
on the Soo Line.
For example, at one time there was a brick factory in
the valley. Also, the valley was once known as a late
night gathering spot for young people to gather and
party away from the prying eyes of adults.
There was once a tree nursery, which is now called
Maryland Public Park.
The nursery closed about 35 years ago, but Moran
said its mark is still evident in the valley. She notes
there is an odd-looking tree in one spot, which
basically looks like 10 trees all sticking out of the
same base trunk.
“That’s what they’d do, just jump off a train and jump
on (another) train,” Wakamow Valley Authority (WVA)
executive assistant Margaret Moran said, adding the
area along the north shore of Plaxton’s Lake where the
men traversing Canada in search of work would camp
out in the valley became known as ‘Hobo Jungle.’
However, Moran said that’s just one small chapter in
the unfolding story of Wakamow Valley, within which
Plaxton’s Lake plays an intricate role.
The lake is not a natural entity, although today
it is an important part of the park’s wildlife habitat.
The CPR created the artificial reservoir by damming
off Moose Jaw River for the purposes of giving trains
easy access to water – a substance which steam
engines require a tremendous amount.
Moran said a regular sight in the winter of those
earlier settler years would be workers carving out
large slabs of ice off the lake surface for use on the
trains.
But the body of water had an added benefit of a lesspractical nature – entertainment. Moran said for years
Plaxton’s Lake was a place for swimming, boating,
beach activity and just getting away from the hustle
and bustle of life in the city.
“Once CPR dammed the river,” Moran said. “It created
a reservoir for entertainment, as well as creating a
habitat.”
On the north side of the shore was a wooden aquatic
centre with a boathouse. Built in 1913, the Aquatic
Club House stood along the Moose Jaw shoreline
until 1959, when it was moved uphill to its current
location (276 Home St. E.) to be renamed the
Sportsman’s Centre and serve as home to WVA.
Moran said throughout Wakamow Valley are
examples of historic significance, just waiting to be
rediscovered. She encourages visitors to explore the
urban park.
16
“I think the history is probably untapped ... It’s
definitely an important part of Moose Jaw’s history.”
Under the boardwalk, Wakamow Valley.
According to Moran, the likely cause for the odd tree
is a worker burying a lot of saplings in one clump for
the winter, but forgetting to dig them up and separate
them for proper planting come spring.
“I think with Wakamow Valley, there are so many
places to explore.”
Moran said the tourism aspects of the valley go far
beyond its historic elements. For example, she said
the valley serves as an oasis of tree cover for various
bird species and, therefore, bird watchers consider
Wakamow as an excellent place to spot species.
She said here is a bird watcher pamphlet available
at the WVA office for those with an interest in such
things.
According to Moran, the valley is key to the
community’s continued success, as it offers residents
access to natural surroundings, which she believes is
important to the human experience.
“It really is a jewel in Moose Jaw.”

Winter adventures in Moose Jaw
Ah, Winter. From the first snowfall to the last melt,
winter in Moose Jaw has plenty to offer.
Crescent Park, minutes from downtown, glistens
with new fallen snow and bare branches are
encased in magical hoar frost. Each breath is crisp,
clean and fresh. Brave winter-resident birds leave
tiny tracks in the snow and watch to see if you
are a ‘feeder’ as well as a ‘looker’. The Serpentine
Creek is a ribbon of ice and shouts of glee from
the summer water park are silenced. Bring a
hot chocolate, dust off a bench and relax in this
beautiful winter oasis.
Want to get active? Wakamow Park fits the
bill. Skate on the massive outdoor skating oval,
snowshoe and cross country ski on well groomed
tails and walk for miles, protected in this peaceful
valley. See if you can identify the numerous
tracks – rabbit? deer? fox? racoon? mink? Go at
dawn or dusk and you may catch sight of one of
the resident beavers. Bring a supply of pine nuts
and the chickadees will eat them out of your hand.
Didn’t bring your gear? Call Boh’s Cycle & Sporting
Goods (306-692-0477) to rent skates, skis and
snowshoes. Check out www.wakamow.ca and you
may even find a horse drawn sleigh ride to take in.
When you rent those skates, you can utilize one
of the many neighborhood outdoor rinks or skate
indoors at the Kinsmen Sportsplex. No skates?
Keep your boots on and join a game of ball hockey.
Or watch the professionals at Mosaic Place where
you can take in a fast paced game with our own
Moose Jaw Warriors Western Hockey League team.
If tobogganing is your thrill, ask any ‘local’ and
they’ll happily direct you to the nearest hill. In fact,
they’re so friendly, they just might join you!
Staying indoors is made easy when it’s relaxing
in the naturally hot waters at Temple Gardens
Mineral Spa, golfing at the Moose Jaw Field House,
Wakamow Valley Winter Festival
exploring underground spaces at the Tunnels of
Moose Jaw, trying your luck at the Casino, visiting
days gone by at the Western Development Museum
or attending a live musical performance at the Mae
Wilson Theatre. Add to that great shops and superb
eateries where you’ll browse or sit, watching the
snow swirl by outside.
If you’ve got the equipment and hankering for fresh
fish, head on out to Buffalo Pound Lake where you
and a few dozen regulars can sit and chew the fat
while the fish take a bite out of your bait. Mmm.
Mmm. Nothing tastier!
Yes, indeed. We know Moose Jaw is fabulous in
summer but now you know that winter in
Moose Jaw is equally so. Give it a try.

There is enough fun and excitement in Moose Jaw to tucker you out…
20
Don’t be fooled: just because the prairies are
flat doesn’t mean there aren’t beautiful spots
for camping. Truth be told, the area around
Moose Jaw has four great campgrounds to choose
from. Whether you’re a local or just passing
through, between Prairie Oasis, River Park, Trails
End Guest Ranch and Buffalo Pound, you’ll
certainly find a gorgeous spot perfectly fitted to
your needs – at affordable prices.
Prairie Oasis Campground is open 12 months of
the year. Located on the Trans-Canada Highway
on the east side of Moose Jaw, it has 104 sites that
range from electric to full hook-up. Though it’s
open all year, water and sewer are only working
starting in the spring once the weather warms up.
“We are right in the city. We have an indoor
swimming pool, hot tub and water slide. We have
a gated playground. We fit the large motor homes
so there’s no unhooking, no backing up. They pull
through and it’s completely paved,” said Monique
Guillaume.
Guillaume also said Prairie Oasis also has a little
man-made lake that’s been stocked with rainbow
trout in the past. It also offers wireless internet as
well as a restaurant and gas station onsite.
She said proximity to Moose Jaw is an advantage
for those on long trips.
“They can guarantee a spot here. Good for one or
two nights. They can go to the spa and the casino
and then off they go,” said Guillaume.
People can call 306-693-8888 or 1-800-854-8855
for more information on Prairie Oasis Tourist
Complex.
River Park Campgrounds is another location for
camping that is located right in the Friendly City.
Bill Shiers and his wife bought River Park 20 years
ago. Over the past two decades, Shiers said he has
clientele that has come back every year.
Aylesbury, SK
River Park opens on May 1 and is open until the
end of September.
“It’s been a long-running campground every year
continuously since 1927.
It’s down in the Wakamow Valley bordering the
Moose Jaw River,” Shiers said.
The Shiers take good care of the campground. Bill
said that a couple years ago they redid some of
the sites. Though it decreased the number of sites
to about 100, it made the size of each site larger,
something Shiers said was a real improvement.
“We’re quite particular about cosmetics of
campgrounds. Bathrooms are particularly
important. A couple years ago we completely
renovated them,” Shiers said.
The campgrounds – and not just the bathrooms
– have received compliments from international
travelers. Shiers said an Australian man booked a
trip based solely on the rave reviews his neighbour
gave of River Park.
“That kind of thing is really heart-warming to us,”
Shiers said.
River Park Campground’s phone number is
306-692-5474.
There are still great options for campers looking
to put a bit more distance between themselves and
the city.
Trails End Guest Ranch is a working cattle ranch in
the beautiful Arm River valley between Regina and
Saskatoon, three kilometres off Highway 11.
It’s open from the end of May (or early June) until
the first week of October.
“It’s such a great place. It’s close to the highway,
but it’s secluded and private. You get to go out and
walk on the land,” said Christine Benz. “This is a

Buffalo Pound has seven subdivided
campgrounds that equal 296 sites, including
group camping and wheelchair accessible sites.
The sites range from full-service to non-serviced.
Some of the sites are open all year while others
open for the May long-weekend and close on
Sept. 30. And Buffalo Pound actually has buffalo
to look at.
“The campground is one of the few that’s close
to the water. It’s down in the valley. Most
campgrounds you can have a view of the lake.
It stretches along the shoreline of the lake. There’s
a swimming pool, boat launch and a green space
up by the lake,” said Dave Bjarnason.
Bjarnason added that as of March 12 there will
be an online reservation service for campers to
choose the site that meets their requirements.
It will also maximize cost efficiency.

Austin Davis, Moose Jaw Times-Herald
25 years since its inception, Sidewalk Days is going
strong. Normally held in June, this year will see
a change in date to July 5, 6 and 7. Coordinator,
Teresa Gillis says that while locals always support
the event, they hope that by changing it to July,
they will see more tourists. After all, she points out,
who could resist strolling right down the centre of
Main Street, checking out great deals and taking in
diverse entertainment – from early morning till late
at night?
“Our theme this year is “Everything Under the
Sun” says Gillis. “We literally will have something
to offer everyone”. Every year businesses bring
their products out into the sunshine and to add
to the good mood, they offer exceptional deals on
everything from clothing to jewelry to knick knacks
to beauty products to books to…..well, you get the
picture! Joining in the excitement will be street
vendors, buskers and entertainers – all there to
make you tap your toes and do a jig.
This year has some exciting additions to the
usual programming. Moose Jaw’s own Snowbirds
Aerobatic Team will be doing a fly-by over Main
Street on Friday. New this year is the “A-Moosing-

Race”, modeled after the Amazing Race, with
approximately 400 runners participating. Much
of the race will take place right on Main Street.
Saturday night will see a giant cabaret at Mosaic
Place to celebrate another end to a great event.

Sidewalk Days
Gillis suggests booking accommodations early if
you plan to attend. “Every year more is involved
and this year with all the runners, vendors and
visitors, a place to stay may be hard to find”.
Moose Jaw’s Sidewalk Days guarantees to offer yet
another exciting Must See, Must Do while you visit
our City.

Get pampered on your vacay!
Looking for a unique Spa experience while in
Moose Jaw? Let us help you find one. Several of
Tourism Moose Jaw’s members provide exceptional
services in beautiful surroundings.
After a soak in the geothermal pool at Temple
Gardens Mineral Spa why not try the new Indian
spice hot oil massage therapy? Performed by a body
treatment specialist, it is a very relaxing treatment
similar to a regular massage but with an added
element of pain relief, making it very popular for
arthritis sufferers.
With it being just one of over 43 available treatments,
Tammy Nineham, of Temple Gardens feels that
it’s important for people dealing with high stress
lifestyles to pamper themselves from time to time.
“A spa treatment can help people relax and utimately
feel healthier”, says Nineham.
Vicki Nolan, from Wrapture Spa and Gifts agrees.
“One of the many treatments we offer is a raindrop
treatment, an aromatherapy therapeutic massage
that helps align the spine resulting in a calming
of both the mind and body”. Nolan also stresses
the effectivness of using massage as a preventative
measure against injuries. “Preventative medicine is
really powerful if you start soon enough in your life”.
Sahara Spa is another
spa with specialized
massage therapy, this
one all the way from
Bali. “It’s called Jamu
massage which involves
different techniques such as skin
rolling and other traditional Balinese techniques”
Adria Austin from Sahara said.
All agree that spa treatments aren’t just for women
as men make up a growing percentage of their
clintele. While they start out getting talked into
it by their wives or girlfriends most keep coming
back. Massages and pedicures are the most popular
with the guys but many also take advantage of
reflexology and facials. This shared love of feeling
good often results in couple’s treatments which are
definitely growing in popularity.
One thing Temple Gardens Mineral Spa, Wrapture
Spa and Gifts and Sahara Spa have in common is
their shared desire to make your life less stressful
and much, much more relaxed. Visit soon!

Millers expecting exciting year ahead
Rich tradition of baseball in Moose Jaw
With well over a quarter century of baseball in
Moose Jaw, the rich traditions of the Miller Express
can been seen throughout the summer in the
Friendly City.
The main attraction in the summer months is the
team that calls Ross Wells Park home – The Moose
Jaw Miller Express. The ball diamond on Caribou
Street East and Ross Crescent has beautiful murals
painted on the outside and can seat over 1,000
people inside.
Playing in the Western Major Baseball League,
the Millers has a long history of success on the
field, developing quality baseball players in the
Friendly City.
Many players who roamed the fields of Ross Wells
Park over the years have gone on to have enjoyable
baseball careers at the collegiate level in the
United States and several have had successful
professional careers, including current Toronto Blue
Jays pitcher Scott Richmond and former majorleaguers Dax Jones and Josh Labandeira.
“There have been a lot of very, very talented players
from the local level play with the organization,”
said general manager Cory Olafson. “There have
been a handful of others drafted (by Major League
Baseball clubs) who played AA and Class A pro
baseball. It is a very steeped tradition with lots
of talent.”
Every team in the league is allowed to have 16
imports (mostly Americans) on their rosters and
the Millers usually fill those spots with some top
rated talent. With recruiting done year round and
throughout Canada and the United States, the
Millers are able to bring in some of the top players
available for summer, wooden-bat baseball.
“We’ve been fortunate here as we have had a
very good nucleus of local guys for many years,”
said Olafson.
The boys of summer kick off the 2012 season on
May 28 at Ross Wells Park with 11 different teams
from around Saskatchewan and Alberta getting
back into the swing of summer.

watch as we have a lot of big bats coming in and
a lot of great pitchers coming in, so it should be
a very exciting summer for people coming out to
watch the Moose Jaw Millers play baseball.”

It’s hot… it’s humid… It’s pool time!
The City of Moose Jaw’s Parks and Recreation
department operates two public pools – indoors at the
Kinsmen Sportsplex (year round) at 855 MacDonald
Street West and outdoors in beautiful Crescent Park
(weather depending - mid May to September).
The Sportsplex is a multi-faceted facility with a leisure
pool for kiddies, hot tub, steam rooms, main pool for
lap swimming and a water slide. There are lifeguards
on duty at all times.
“In addition to public swimming, we also offer water
workout classes throughout the week at various
levels and time slots, Red Cross swimming lessons
after school, advanced courses in first aid, lifeguard
classes and boat licensing courses”, said John Hepting,
manager of the pool.
The outdoor pool, named after championship
swimmer, Phyllis Dewar, comes in at 50 by 24 meters
and boasts a one and three meter springboard and a
five and seven meter diving platform. Robin Mitchell
of Parks and Recreation points out, “We have a free
paddling pool and water park adjacent to the outdoor
pool. The water park has water cannons, water slides,
spray fire hydrants, spray arches, nozzles and slides”.
Other great pools include the one at Prairie Oasis
Motel Complex which offers year-round waterslides.
“It’s all indoors and there are two water slides, a kiddy
pool slide and a hot tub. It’s all just for recreation”,
said Monique Guillaume. She added that there is a
lifeguard on duty at all times as well as a playground
right beside the pool.
For more of a soak, albeit a soothing one in
geothermal mineral water, try the pool at Temple
Gardens Resort Hotel. “Our geothermal mineral
water provides health boosting benefits, relaxes
muscles, eases joint pain, replenishes cell composition,
rejuvenates and rehydrates skin.”, says Marissa
McCartney. While guests at the hotel can take in the
waters at no charge, it is open to the public for the
price of admission.
So, whatever your taste, Moose Jaw’s pools will keep
you cool and calm and ready to take on your next
City adventure.
