Box 16230 Knoxville, Tn. 37996 (865) 579-5164 [email protected] www.peacefulkingdom.org/Critter CRITTER TEAM Juan Noltenius, Sharon Popek, Cathy Shepherd, Tom Swain, Carmen Trammell, Pam Vandergriff, and Heidi Weimer ADVERTISING Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for animals who need homes. Monthly business sponsorship rates are $300/ 150/75/35 for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and $200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25. ADOPTION CRITERIA Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded shelters may instead require a spay/ neuter contract and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit your home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future. Cover Girl: Tasi Noble Tasi Noble and owner Dave Dunlap were the winners of the second annual American Cancer Society Bark For Life held September 19, 2010, at Petsafe Dog Park in the Tommy Schumpert Park in Knox County. Following is Dave’s story: Noble came into my life through the Afghan Hound Rescue organization in Charlotte. It was an instant bond and mutual friendship when we met. Noble trusted me and I trusted him. He was about 1 year old, playful and full of energy. He was always ready to go or do something outside. He really enjoys meeting people and getting attention from them. As we walked each day, he became my buddy, and we solved the problems of the world together. Shortly after Noble turned 2 years old, I was diagnosed with skin cancer. I was scared. I began to undergo skin treatments. Noble did not care that I had huge red areas of skin being treated. I had treatment areas on my arms and then later on my face. He still wanted to go for walks, and made sure we stuck to our daily routine. He kept me on the go, meeting our friends and neighbors along our walks. Some people said nothing about my obvious skin condition, but many people said they understood what I was going through. As time went by I looked around and saw other people from all walks of life going through the same thing. I am lucky my skin cancer was diagnosed early. And I am lucky to have Noble, who kept me going during a hard time and is always ready to go out and enjoy another long walk with his buddy. Visit your local shelter or visit www. petfinder.com to find your perfect senior. Nov 7–13 National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week Animal shelters offer many services to assist animals and people alike: controlling animals running at large, rescuing injured animals, returning lost pets to their owners, and adopting animals into new, loving homes. They also offer the personal guidance of their staffs to assist the public with animal-related issues and concerns. © 2009 Patrick McDonnell www.animalsheltering.org/ sheltersrock Nov 29–Dec 5 Please show your local animal shelters your appreciation: * Donate needed supplies * Spread the word about the importance of responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering * Volunteer your time at the shelter or at one of the shelter’s special events * Report animal cruelty & neglect to local animal control * Choose your next pet from among the many animals being cared for at the shelter. They have plenty of pets just waiting. Puppy Mill Action Week www.humanesociety.org/puppymills Puppy Mill Facts: * Two to four million puppies are born in puppy mills each year in the U.S. * Parent dogs are kept in cages their entire lives, breeding litter after litter & in most cases never setting foot outside of a cage. * Puppies are most commonly sold in pet stores, over the Internet, & newspaper classified ads. * Puppy mills treat dogs badly. Documented conditions include over‐breeding, wire cages, little to no veterinary care, poor quality and/or lack of food and water, no protection from the elements, no socialization outside the cage, killing “low producing” dogs. * Puppies are transported hundreds of miles to be sold in pet stores or to unsuspecting Internet buyers. * The best place to look for a puppy is your local animal shelter. Nationwide, one out of every four dogs in a shelter is a purebred, and mixed‐breed dogs also make wonderful pets. * Rescue groups exist for virtually every breed of dog. * The only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying the puppies. 865-755-2276 www.vet.utk.edu/cait PAGE 10 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2010 [email protected] BOST ON TERRIER RESCUE BOSTON (865) 983-3272 [email protected] www.petfinder.org/shelters/TN254.html Caesar (left) is a small-boned 8 year old male that was rescued from an abandoned house. November is Adopt a S enior P et Month! Senior Pet Macy is a petite, pretty, dark brindle girl with white feet, chest, and tip of tail. She is an affectionate, slightly mischievous, and energetic 2½ year old. Macy is quick to learn and eager to please. Katidid is recently retired and is looking forward to meeting you! There are so many benefits to adopting senior pets! They have calmer temperaments and better manners. They are less likely to have that puppy energy that challenges even the most patient owners. Seniors often enjoy just lounging with their family or going for short, quiet walks. Senior pets are easier to train and maintain their focus. Younger dogs typically have short attention spans, while older dogs learn quickly and are eager to please. Older pets settle into your household a lot easier. Dogs are often already housetrained and will know how to ask to be let outside, and cats will know how to use their litter boxes. Older pets also are past the chewing and scratching stages and are content to find a soft place to nap. You’ll have more time for yourself and to enjoy your pet, instead of cleaning up after them, attending to frequent bathroom breaks, teaching them manners, and all the other stuff that’s necessary when you have a youngster. What you see is what you get. You know how big your dog or cat is going to be, and you know his or her temperament, personality, and activity level. Ladybug is settling into retired life, and we are still learning about her. PAGE 12 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2010 Senior pets have a lot of love to give, and form bonds easily.
