4-H holds awards banquet

This year’s 4-H banquet took place on November 1 at
Fellowship Reformed Church. About 170 people enjoyed
a very nice chicken dinner.

Dr. Lucie pens new book on the
life of Bill Scagel
Fruitport graduate addresses
theologians

Dr. James Lucie’s 30-year dream of writing a book
about William Wales Scagel has come true. He recently
published Scagel Handmade, a book about the life of
Bill Scagel. Throughout the book are full-color photos
of Scagel knives, and the only known photo of Scagel.
Bill Scagel was an unusual individual who walked
to the beat of his own drummer throughout his entire
life. He believed in self-sufficiency, forgoing the use
of electricity and other “modern” conveniences. And
although Dr. Lucie
was his doctor as
well as good friend,
Scagel hated doctors
as well.
Dr. Lucie says
he just happened
to be in the right
place at the right
time to get to know
Scagel. He said
Scagel was the first
since Bowie to bring
art form to knives.
In his 52 years of
knife making, Scagel
created the base
pattern for nearly
every modern knife,
including cutlery knives. He is known as the “Father of
Modern Cutlery.”
Dr. Lucie is proud to say his entire book was
published in the United States, as opposed to less
expensive printing costs in China or elsewhere.
Only 1,000 copies have been printed, and many of
those have already been sold. An earlier, limited special
edition sold out in two months. The books are $125
each and are sold on a first come, first served basis.

Dr. Michael Forrest, a 1971 Fruitport High School
graduate, was selected to present a paper at the National
Conference of the Evangelical Theological Society in
Atlanta, Georgia. The organization is a professional
academic society of biblical scholars, teachers, pastors,
and others involved in evangelical scholarship. The
conference convened from November 17 to 20.
Dr. Forrest, the senior clinical associate of
Centennial Park Counseling in Grand Rapids, presented
an analysis and summary of his study of the health and
healing ramifications of the complex, biblical Hebrew
concept of “Shalom.” The Hebrew word “shalom”
often is translated simply as “peace,” but this does
not adequately convey the richness and practical
implications of the ethical and community-oriented
health connotations of the Hebrew concept.•
Muskegon Community College
lecture series

The Muskegon Community College Lecture Series
for 2010-2011 opened its season on October 28.
The series continues on February 3, 2011 with Dr.
Sara Blair, Professor of English at the University of
Michigan. Her presentation is entitled “After the fact:
The ongoing life of documentary photography.”
