The colorful Barn Quilts welcome
visitors to explore Kankakee County’s
scenic countryside. The Barn Quilt
concept originated in Adams County,
Ohio and Kankakee County adopted
the initiative in 2008. Local artists,
quilters, and barn owners worked
together to create a county-wide tour of
rural splendor. The Barn Quilt squares
are 8 foot by 8 foot wooden blocks,
painted with durable exterior paint for
prolonged display. Each pattern and
homestead shares a unique story of
growth, celebration, toil and tradition.

Kankakee River State Park
Treasured for centuries—first by Native
Americans, later by traders and farmers,
Kankakee River State Park offers a proud
heritage in an unspoiled setting. Anglers,
canoeists, hunters, campers, hikers, bicyclers,
and other outdoor enthusiasts find the park’s
recreational opportunities unsurpassed. The
naturally channeled Kankakee River, listed on
the Federal Clean Streams Register, is the focus
of the park’s popularity.
Enveloping both sides of the Kankakee River
for 11 miles, in an area six miles northwest of
Kankakee, the park consists of approximately
4,000 acres. Illinois Routes 102 on the north
and 113 on the south frame the park, with I-55
and I-57 both providing convenient access.

the campground, amenities include the pool,
playground, basketball and volleyball courts,
and a game room or relax under one of the big,

Wright
in Kankakee County
Kankakee has a rich architectural history.
Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, widely
considered one of America’s greatest architects,
left his mark in downtown Kankakee by designing
two neighboring houses set along the banks of the
Kankakee River. The B. Harley Bradley House,
a house museum with gift shop, and the Warren
R. Hickox House, a private residence, are part of
Kankakee’s Riverview Historic District.
Located less than a mile from downtown
Kankakee, the Riverview Historic District is filled
with many other impressively designed, custom-built
homes, many more than 100 years old.
The Bradley House was designed by Wright in
1900. Originally named Glenlloyd, The Bradley
House is recognized as the first of Wright’s Prairie
Style homes characterized by simple horizontal
lines, earth-toned palette, and long bands of iconic
art glass windows. This marked a radical change in
American architectural design. The house includes
some of his trademark features, including sweeping
rooflines, natural unfinished materials and expanses
of woodwork. The seven-bedroom home is included
on the National Register of Historic Places.
In June 2010, Wright In Kankakee, a local notfor-profit, acquired the house to create a museum
and public arts/education center. Following an
extensive restoration, the Bradley House is
open to the public for tours or event hosting.
