Local artists, quilters, and barn owners worked together to create a county-wide tour of rural splendor. The Barn Quilt squares are 8 foot by 8 foot wooden blocks, painted with durable exterior paint for prolonged display. Each pattern and homestead shares a unique story of growth, celebration, toil and tradition. Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, widely considered one of America’s greatest architects, left his mark in downtown Kankakee by designing two neighboring houses set along the banks of the Kankakee River. The B. Harley Bradley House, a house museum with gift shop, and the Warren R. Hickox House, a private residence, are part of Kankakee’s Riverview Historic District. Located less than a mile from downtown Kankakee, the Riverview Historic District is filled with many other impressively designed, custom-built homes, many more than 100 years old. The Bradley House was designed by Wright in 1900. Originally named Glenlloyd, The Bradley House is recognized as the first of Wright’s Prairie Style homes characterized by simple horizontal lines, earth-toned palette, and long bands of iconic art glass windows. This marked a radical change in American architectural design. The house includes some of his trademark features, including sweeping rooflines, natural unfinished materials and expanses of woodwork. The seven-bedroom home is included on the National Register of Historic Places. In June 2010, Wright In Kankakee, a local notfor-profit, acquired the house to create a museum and public arts/education center. Following an extensive restoration, the Bradley House is open to the public for tours or event hosting. For more info visit www.wrightinkankakee.org. 815-935-7390 visitkankakeecounty.com
