A Message from our Pastor
Fr. Santos “Sunny” Castillo
MY FATHER’S STORY AND
WHY WE NEED THE HOLY SPIRIT
Last weekend, I was shocked to find out that my father died, and in the midst of
Mother’s Day Celebrations, a part of my heart was just numb for my dad. Just a few
hours before I found out, I preached a little bit about my father and my mother at
the Spanish mass. I talked about how my mother showed me God’s love, when my father had to fight with
his personal demons in his life. Even my father was always quick to admit about his own weaknesses and
struggles in becoming a healthy individual. And yet, as I write this message while I am at the airport on my
way home to be at my father’s funeral, I cannot help but think of the reality of our lives, and how much we
need God, because we are all truly weak when left on our own, and we all have demons to battle with.
Over the years, whenever I shared a bit of my own personal life story in my homilies, I have always found
myself referring to the sad part of my father’s story, but in fairness to him, beyond those weaknesses that
plagued him for much of his life, he actually had some truly endearing qualities that put a smile on my
face when I remember them. For one, he is an excellent cook. Making good food is always easy for him; I
watched him play with spices and techniques of cooking when I was a young boy, mesmerized at the fanciness of the things that he made. He is also quite the clean and neat freak. He cleaned the house tirelessly
and made us aware of the consequences if we ever messed up the house. He is very good to his friends.
I saw many times how people are easily drawn to him for his gregariousness and willingness to help them
in whatever way that he could. During the nice and sober days, he taught us how to shower properly and
gave us hugs and kisses. I remember days of laughing when he would connive with us in plotting practical
jokes on mom when we were little children. I remember one time when my mom turned on the lights in the
bedroom only to find that we were all in bed, and we started singing and dancing like crazy with dad and my
mom was so startled and we would all be laughing at her. When the days were good and all was well with
the world, they were really good days for sure in my family.
My dad’s story reaffirms for me that humanity is weak, despite our being created as fundamentally good.
And in the constant battle between good and bad in each one of us, we need God to help us. We need the
Lord. We need God’s presence in our personal walk. And to the very end, we rely on God to help us overcome the forces of evil around.
This week, as we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, we recognize that the Holy Spirit is the one that
strengthens and sanctifies us. Jesus sent His Spirit upon the Church because we were never supposed to
be left alone to figure out the journey of the Church. It was the Holy Spirit that give courage to the apostles to
proclaim the Christian Message. From that point on, they did not fear. The same Holy Spirit would guide the
martyrs to witness for Jesus with their lives. The same Spirit showers wisdom and the gift of discernment to
God’s people in order that the Church may continue to battle against sin, evil and human frailty, pouring our
love, mercy and renewal that comes from God Himself.
I want to say thank you to the many that are praying for me during this time. Please pray for the soul of my
father, Cesar Castillo, that he may finally find his peace and by God’s mercy, come to embrace the fullness
of God’s Divine Life. Because the Spirit of the Lord is alive, I am well, grateful, hopeful and joyful, no matter
what. I pray that by the Spirit of God alive in our Church, you all feel the same, my dear churches in Kankakee. God bless you always!
With you in the same Spirit,
Fr. Sunny Castillo

A Message from Fr. Roy
A NEW LANGUAGE!
I have a favorite little story, a story about a stain glassmaker. He was a wonderful
master at stain glass and windows. Every window every glass that he produced
were exquisite and outstanding, marvelous, the colors and the lights etc,. One day
a man came to him, worked hard to learn the techniques of making stain glass and
began to make stain glass. Though he learned every trick and technique he did
not have that quality and the perfection of his master. One day he thought “it is
the tools that make the troubles” and when the master was out he used his tools. But still he did not have
that quality. When the master returned he apologized for using his tools and explained everything. Then
the master said “it is not the tools or the material that matters it is the spirit of the master that matters.”
I thought of this story in terms of the feast that we celebrate today, the feast of Pentecost, the feast of the
Holy Spirit. During the last four weeks we have been hearing the last supper discourse from the gospel of
John. Through the last supper discourse Jesus was preparing his disciples for two important things. The
first is the departure of Jesus from this world and the other is the arrival of the Holy Spirit. That is the feast
of Pentecost.
Since it was the feast of Pentecost a huge multitude was gathered in the city. They came with different
intentions. They had different motives. To their astonishment, some Galilean spoke to them in their own
native language. To their astonishment, some unheard illiterates spoke the language they understood. This
is really astonishing. We all know how difficult it is to learn another language. We all know how difficult
it is to speak and write in another language. It takes years of listening to the phonetics and exercising the
syntax structures of a language, before we feel at ease in another language.
On the day of Pentecost we are told that the disciples began speaking a language that everybody
assembled there could understand. What was in fact that new language that the disciples spoke which
could be understood by everybody? Was it Latin, Greek, Hebrew or one of the known languages? No,
none of them! There is only one language that everybody could understand - the language of love! That
beautiful language is expressed through emotions and feelings, compassion and selflessness. It is that
very same language Mother Teresa spoke, St Francis Assisi spoke. The language of Love even animals,
birds and fish can understand. Let us try to grow beyond our ego and go beyond words. That is the only way to have a true anointing of
the Holy Spirit. Then only our celebration of the feast of Pentecost will be meaningful. When the disciples
of Jesus imbibed his Spirit; it elevated them to a new level of consciousness, which enabled them to
envision and pursue a multilingual, multicultural, multiracial mission. The Spirit of Christ enabled them to
form a community of love and sharing. Let us wish and pray “Come Holy Spirit.”
Have a great week!

And I ask myself: Am I a Christian
by fits and starts, or am I a Christian fulltime? Our culture of the
ephemeral, the relative, also takes
its toll on the way we live our
faith. God asks us to be faithful to
Him, daily, in our everyday life. He
goes on to say that, even if we are
sometimes unfaithful to Him, He
remains faithful. In His mercy, He
never tires of stretching out His
hand to lift us up, to encourage us
to continue our journey, to come
back and tell Him of our weakness, so that He can grant us His
strength. This is the real journey:
to walk with the Lord always, even
at moments of weakness, even in
our sins. Never to prefer a makeshift path of our own. That kills us.
Faith is ultimate fidelity, like that of
Mary. Homily, October13, 2013.
