From early Christian times
Killaloe Ballina was an
important monastic settlement
and from the 12th century a
cathedral and ecclesiastical centre. In fact the Killaloe
Diocese is named after the village.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the
two villages evolved on either bank
of the River Shannon. The opening
of the railway and canal with
Limerick ushered in a prosperous
period and river navigation
became a primary function of the
twin settlements.
Today Killaloe Ballina are
amongst Ireland’s most
picturesque villages
and serve as a gateway
to the River Shannon
and Lough Derg — the
Shannon’s Pleasure Lake.

A significant settlement during stoneage,
celtic, and early monastic times, Killaloe
Ballina was, for over a century, also the seat
of Ireland’s High Kings. The most famous of
these Kings was Brian Boru (961-1014) who
ruled from Kincora (located at The Green
where the present St. Flannan’s Catholic
church now stands) from 1002-1014 .

Sights to See
Lough Derg, Ireland’s Pleasure
Lake, is the largest of the River
Shannon lakes. Rich in myth and history, it is nestled
between the Slieve Bernagh Mountains of Clare and
the Arra Mountains of Tipperary. The following are
some of the sights or amenities which you can visit
which will add to your enjoyment of the lake.

A Holy Island (Inis Cealtra) One of the most famous monastic
sites in Ireland, it has many treasured relics of Ireland’s monastic era,
including a well preserved round tower and the ruins of 6 churches. Boat
trips from Mountshannon harbour can be booked in advance.
B St. Cronan’s Church (East Clare Heritage Museum)
This museum and tourist information point is housed in a 10th Century
Church that is regularly used for worship making it the oldest church still
in use in Ireland and Great Britain.
C Two Mile Gate (Ballycuggaran Beach) Here you can
feed the ducks, swans, take a stroll around the area, fish, and for the
courageous, take a dip in the cool waters of Lough Derg.
Scenic picnic area.
D The Spirit of Killaloe 50 seat luxury passenger boat with
upper and lower decks and bar facilities on board. Cruises normally

E The Graves of the Leinstermen On the northwestern
side of Tountinna Mountain are the Bronze Age stones (1,500 BC)
commonly called “the Graves of the Leinstermen”. One stone is
standing, the rest are covered in undergrowth. The site could have
originally been a stone circle or a Neolithic Tomb. The name “the
Graves of the Leinstermen” dates from Brian Boru’s time (circa 980
AD) when his soldiers reputedly ambushed and massacred passing
Leinster Vikings at this location.
F The Millennium Cross Erected in 2002 adjacent to an
earlier cross erected in 1932 and hit by lightning in 1936.

1 Brian Boru Heritage Centre & Tourist Information
Office What better way to get an insight into the celtic and nautical
significance of Lough Derg and the River Shannon than by visiting the
Brian Boru heritage centre. The centre incorporates a tourist information
office, a crafts centre, a community library, and an exhibition tracing
the history of Killaloe Ballina from the 10th century to the present day,
including its strong nautical links with Lough Derg — the largest of the
River Shannon lakes. A large part of the centre tells the story of the last
High King of Ireland, Brian Boru (940-1014), who was born in Killaloe.
The heritage centre is located on the bridge on what was the site of the
lock keeper’s residence. Its tourist office offers an information service on
booking accommodations, places to eat, routes to take, maps, guides and
books, places to visit, things to do and information on national and local
events. Open May-September 061 376866
2 St. Flannan’s Cathedral & St. Flannan’s Oratory
This fine Romanesque cathedral was founded about 1185 by Donal Mór
O’Brien (1168-1194) but was later destroyed. The beautiful west door
of the church was preserved when the present structure was built in
the early 13th century, when it was inserted into the building where it
can be seen today. The Thorgrim Stone, before the doorway, is unique
for its Ogham and Runic inscriptions. In the grounds is a Romanesque
church, St. Flannan’s Oratory, dating from the 12th century.
3 St. Flannan’s Catholic Church & St. Lua’s Oratory
This is the highest point in the village and was originally the site of
Brian Boru’s Kincora Palace. The church was built in 1836-37. Within
its grounds stands St. Lua’s Oratory. It originally stood on Friar’s Island
in the River Shannon, but was moved and re-erected here as the island
was due to be flooded with the opening of the Shannon hydroelectric
scheme at Ardnacrusha in 1929.
Main Street and Canal Bank.
4 Aillebaun Walkway Picturesque walkway between the houses of
10 Our Lady and St. Lua’s Catholic Church Built 18431846 overlooking The River Shannon and picturesque Killaloe.
5 Tobermurragh Well Near the pier head, this is named after Brian
Boru’s son, Murrough, who was baptised at this well. The well supplied the
town with water before a piped water scheme came into operation. At the
end of the 19th century the well was enclosed with red brick.
11 The Old Mill Across The River Shannon you can see an historic
building that was once a Marble Mill (1837) and then Major Lefroy’s
flour mill (1860). The building is now owned by the ESB. There is no
access to the mill.
6 Béal Boru or Brian Boru’s Fort Located just on the outskirts
of Killaloe, but within an easy 15 minute footpath walk, this fort is well
sign posted and is a lovely serene ring fort that has been dated to the time
of King Brian Boru’s reign.
12 Templeachally Church Ruins The ruins of Templeachally
or ‘The Church of the Callow or Marsh’ contain the remains of a 12th
century Romanesque church.
7 Canal Bank The canal was opened in 1799 to bypass the rapids
on the river. It was a vital link in the navigation route between Limerick
and other ports on the Shannon. The canal became redundant in 1929
when the water level was raised over the rapids due to the opening of the
hydroelectric station down river.
8 Farmers’ Market On the land bank between the river and the
canal (know locally as ‘Between the waters’) a farmers’ market of locally
produced goods and crafts operates on Sundays between 11am and 3pm.
9 13 Arch Bridge connecting Killaloe, Co Clare and
Ballina, Co Tipperary Originally a 17 arch bridge, (built over 300
years ago), this historic but now 13 arch bridge still retains 5 small arches
from the original. As well as connecting the two villages, the bridge also
connects the two counties of Clare and Tipperary. In the centre of the
bridge is a plaque commemorating four young men that were shot here by
the Auxiliaries in November 1920.
13 Riverside Park & Slipway, and Outdoor Pool The
old railway line path now forms part of the community Riverside Park.
Facilities at the park include a children’s playground, BBQ stands, car
parking, summertime outdoor pool, and public slipway.
14 Old Railway line path The path that can be seen along the
river bank at this point marks the route of the permanent way of the
railway that serviced Killaloe Ballina from 1862 until 1944. Visible also
is an old pedestrian bridge that used to go over the tracks. From there
it is clear to see the arch the train used to pass underneath the road
bridge. The railway tracks were removed in the 1950s. The station and
goods shed have been converted for private use.
15 Spirit of Killaloe Cruise The shore outside the old
railway goods stores (now renovated and redeveloped into a riverside
restaurant) is the pick up point for the River Shannon & Lough Derg
river cruise.
