Algonquin East is the “quiet” side of Algonquin – the area east
of Algonquin Park. Here you'll find not only pristine lakes and
tree-covered hills, but also a way of life that has escaped the
worst of the urban hustle and bustle, and people who are not
afraid to be called old-fashioned.
The area was settled in the mid- and late-1800's by Polish, Irish,
Kashub, and German immigrants who arrived by way of the
Opeongo colonization road, known locally as the "Opeongo
Line". In Wilno's Heritage Park you'll find one of the original
log homes built over a hundred years ago by pioneer settlers.
Many of those log buildings still stand on homesteads, alongside the amazing stone fences built by hard-working farm
families.
With the rapid growth of the logging industry came the
construction of a railway, stretching from Ottawa to Parry
Sound. In Barry's Bay, the historic wooden water tower is the
last remaining one in Ontario. We proudly celebrate our
logging heritage every February at Timberfest – and “the bush”
still provides a living for many of our residents. The lumber
mills in South Algonquin and Killaloe are essential to our local
economy.
Mining also played a part in the development of our area, and
visitors still come to explore the abandoned Craigmont mine
near Combermere. Rock Hounds can gather minerals or rose
quartz nearby.
The lakes and rivers that dot our area provide a natural fourseason playground for visitors from all over the world. The
rapids of the Madawaska River are renowned for the challenge
they present to kayaking enthusiasts, and the quiet lakes are
popular with swimmers, paddlers and anglers alike.
The area still attracts people looking for a more sensible way of
life - be it off grid and organic or a healthy safe place to raise
kids or retire.
