It’s kitschy theme motels paying homage to exotic lands, pop culture and the space age. It’s bright colors and exaggerated angles. It’s the distinct architectural style that defines the Wildwoods. Home to the largest concentration of mid-century architecture in the country, visitors to the Wildwoods are invited to share in the fun ’50s Forever! The Wildwoods’ Doo Wop architecture got its start in the 1950s, when the country was feeling the post-World War II boom and the automobile was first sweeping the nation. It was the birth of the “American Vacation” and new highways made the trip to the Wildwoods easier than ever before. Visitors flocked to our island and a new breed of motels — with brash colors, outlandish styles and far out themes — emerged to accommodate the new traffic. Half a century later, Doo Wop architecture, which for a time was considered “tacky” and “dated,” is once again all the rage. Interested visitors can learn more about the Wildwoods’ hotels — the shapes, images, symbols and more — on the Doo Wop Trolley Tour, an awardwinning, 45-minute tour held throughout the summer. For more information, dates and times, call the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts at 609.884.5404. of our Doo Wop island at any of over 100 ’50s-style hotels. w w w. Boyer Museum, dedicated to the island’s history. Just off the island you’ll find Historic Cold Spring Village, a re-created 19th century living history museum that offers insight into the lives of tradesmen — printers, blacksmiths, potters and more — and their families — spinning, weaving and open-hearth cooking. And in nearby Cape May, there’s the Emlen Physic Estate, an 18-room mansion built in 1879 and designed by world-renowned architect Frank Furness. • The Wildwoods were named for the dense, twisted trees and shrubbery that covered the island in the early 1700s. • The only Revolutionary War battle fought in Cape May County was on Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest. The U.S. Brigantine Nancy and British warships skirmished here in the Battle of Turtlegut. • The Wildwoods were settled in the early 1880s as a fishing community. • Tourism in the Wildwoods began in the 1880s. • Amusements came to the Wildwoods in the 1890s — the very first was a small carousel. • The Wildwoods’ first roller coaster — the Yankee Dip — was constructed in 1916 and cost $12,000. w w w.
