PRESIDENT’S
Hello from the club office, and I hope all your plans are set for the
opening of deer season in a few weeks. We had an easy summer at least
until August rolled around, but that darned drought just seems to go on and
on doesn’t it? I just spent some time at the range making sure that those
bullets go where I want them to and the feeder is about to be running as
soon as I can make the trip to the lease so I’m as ready as I can be from
300 miles away for next month.
Deer season not only is something that most of us look forward to
almost all year long, but it also signals the change of seasons and that fact
that the holidays are right around the corner. The weather has finally cooled
off and Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. There are those that
don’t hunt or deer at least and just don’t get why we spend all the time we
do getting ready. My wife is a prime example of what I mean. While she
loves the meat and at least acts excited when I harvest a buck, but she just
doesn’t get all the prep and time we expend getting ready for a season that
is barely two months long. She doesn’t see how I sit in a blind all afternoon
and still consider it a good day whether I took a shot or not.
This also signals that having to put a jacket on after sunset to sit by
the campfire in the evening at the lease or hearing an occasional coyote
howl in the distance is almost here. Those are just a few of the “extras”
that come from this season that so many of us look forward to all year long.
My son Kyle will be hunting “for real” this fall in the blind and with his own
30-30. While I will be close, I want him to begin to make those shoot/don’t
shoot decisions that only come with experience. That is the way I learned
and he aside from being a good shot, he has already shown good judgment
during our time we have been in the field together.
As I said earlier, deer season also signals that the holidays are right
around the corner. Don’t get so caught up in anything including hunting
that you forget to take a break from the hectic rush of the season and enjoy
time spent with families and just the atmosphere that surrounds this time
of the year. Hope to see you at the October and November dinner meetings and remember that the December meeting is where we will have our
special holiday gathering at Orvis in north Dallas.

2013 Lever Guns Safari
By: Charles Shelton
For several years, DWWC member, Joe Riekers, has hosted a summer hunt for members of the Leverguns.com forum on his high fenced ranch near Hondo, Texas. This year there were some unfilled slots and
Joe invited me to bring along a couple of friends to participate in a package hunt that included one exotic
doe and one hog. I was able to recruit my 13 year old grandson, Troupe, Sterling Burnett, and Richard
Kaufmann. We drove down Friday August 16 in two vehicles so we would have ample room for us and
several coolers in which to bring back the harvested game. We arrived at 5 PM in time for Sterling to sight
in his Browning 1885 30-06 rifle before the hunt began at 6:30PM when we headed out in two ranch
pickup trucks to hunt. I went with Troupe and our guide Toby.
After locating a small herd red deer resting in the shade of the mesquites, Toby guided Troupe within 85
yards of the herd, but they had to wait until a doe stepped clear of a red stag. When the doe moved forward
a bit, Toby told Troupe where to shoot and Troupe scored first with his scoped Howa 7mm-o8, dropping
the red deer doe with one shot through the heart.
Early Saturday morning Toby took Richard and Sterling
out for hogs and they sighted a group of large ones which
escaped into the brush. While searching for the group,
Richard spotted a large black hog hiding under a tree and
took it with one shot with his .257 Weatherby magnum.
While out on the ranch, Sterling saw a beauty of a 2000
pound water buffalo bull and changed his target from a
doe to the bull. Back at camp, he arranged to hunt the
bull and since these bulls can be dangerous and this one
had been attacking blinds and feeders, Joe took him out
alone. Joe never hunts dangerous game without a large
bore rifle and he had not brought his 450- Nitro Express
double rifle because no one had planned to hunt any big
stuff. He borrowed my 1895 .405WCF and a handful of
my hand loaded 400 grain Woodleigh RN SN DG ammo;
(the term “soft point” is a misnomer as these bullets are
tough and have been proven on Cape buffalo) and off
they went to locate the bull.
Sterling had his single shot Browning 1885 30-06 so Joe
planned to let Sterling first shoot his single shot, switch
to my rifle and shoot while Joe reloaded his single shot,
and then switch back to his 30-06 and so on until the bull
was down. Upon locating the bull standing broadside at
40 yards, Joe told Sterling where to shoot, but the first 30
-06 bullet went high on the shoulder and the bull just
turned to face them to see what had annoyed him.
The .405 shot between the shoulders went just above the
heart, but the shock raised bull's front feet off the ground
PAGE 10
V OLU ME 9 , ISSUE 9
(fatal, but not final), so he left. After another stalk and two
more 30-06 shots and one .405, the bull was done and should
make a fine shoulder mount and provide a lot of good eating.
That afternoon, Joe guided me in close to a fallow deer doe
and I knocked it down with a single shot with my .405 WCF,
but in our hurry to quarter the deer and get it on ice, no pictures were taken. At the same time on another part of the
ranch, Richard located and took the red deer doe that he
wanted; this filled his tag and he was able to relax for the rest
of the weekend.
At 6:30 Sunday morning, Toby took Sterling, Troupe and I out for hogs and Sterling had only one 30-06 cartridge left after his range time and punching holes in
his bull. Toby located another group of
loafing hogs and told Sterling to shoot the
largest (it weighed 250 pounds) and he
did; however, the hog ran for nearby
cover, Sterling was out of ammo, so I
dropped it with my .405. Note the big entry hole on left shoulder:
PAGE 11
V OLU ME 9 , ISSUE 9
Toby and I then ran a few yards into the brush and found the sleepy pigs milling about; my only shot was at a
black one with both head and tail in the brush and we could not tell the front from the back of the hog, so I shot it
in the middle and it staggered and stepped into the cover while several smaller 150 pound hogs ran off. Toby
knew where they would go so while Sterling awaited a truck to pick up him and his hog, we drove to watch for the
escaping hogs.
The escaping hogs went where Toby thought and while Troupe was lining up a shot at one of them, my big black
hog came out of the brush so Toby told him to rest his rifle in the front bumper of the truck and shoot it in the
head, so he did at better than 30 yards and down it went! Note .405 entry hole behind shoulder but above the heart
- another terminal shot that was not a stopper.
After the staff field dressed the
hogs while we had a quick
breakfast, Troupe and I went
out to get another. Toby saw a
patch of red in the black and
green mesquite brush and his
binoculars revealed the head of
Rusty, a young boar he had
been after for weeks; five previous hunters had shot and it
and missed. He told Troupe
where to shoot and down went
another hog with a head shot!
Rusty's buddy hogs scattered in
a split second!
PAGE 13
V OLU ME 9 , ISSUE 9
All the other hunters had taken their game, so Joe took his son, Brandon, out to try for a ram with his bow.
And this picture shows that he was successful!
All the hunters went into town for lunch while the staff finished processing the game and we had a great
time recounting our busy and successful weekend hunt. We all had a successful hunt, but being shown
how to shoot game by a seven and 13 year old may take some getting used to!

Davis and Haynes Ranch in Shackleford County
DWWC members, Granville and Linda Wright, wanted to share information about their hunting lease
with the possibility of someone else being interested in acquiring a spot on what they see as a magnificent place! The ranch is rolling mesquite country with draws that hold water in wet times and supports
good tanks. Water troughs are scattered throughout the ranch. It’s in Shackleford County and there is
around 8,000 acres of land available. Total ranch size is 18,000 acres and is not overgrazed. There are
good roads for access to pasture roads because of the wind farm fans. This does not hurt the wildlife
habitat and there are some really nice deer on the place.
There is lots of brush
for the deer to hide
and move in, but not
so much as to obscure a hunter’s
view.
The ranch is beautifully managed as it has not been hunted in
9 years. The y have 100’s of pictures from cameras around the
ranch and from the census they
take via helicopter!

The Tordillo Ranch
A little about the The Briscoe Tordillo Ranch. This ranch is 32,000 acres located in NW Webb County
midway between Laredo and Eagle Pass. The country is remote and rugged with numerous major creeks
(San Lorenzo Creek, Tordillo Creek, and Cirilo Creek) plus 24 stock tanks. This ranch is special and is
the best free-range herd I’ve hunted in my 35 years of South Texas deer hunting mainly due to its lack of
hunting pressure, strong non-typical genetics, and diverse topography including multiple drainages and
excellent soils, plus free flowing creeks and abundant surface water. This ranch has produced 190+ free
range trophy bucks.
There is a bunk house that you will be staying in with meals and beverages included. We've received over
40" of rain since last October, and we expect one of our better deer seasons this year. See attached for
just a few picutres of our bucks taken over previous seasons plus some live photos from a couple of weeks
ago. We put 2 cameras out for two nights on 2 different feed pins and had these bucks show up. These
feed pens are only used as supplement feeding during the offseason. You will be hunting safari style over
32,000 acres and not sitting over a feeder. You will have 2 guides and expect to see 10-20 bucks a day.
There will be the opportunity fish and shoot hogs if you wish. This is a trophy hunt so you will be harvesting a mature buck with no trophy fees or any additional cost. Just bring your weapon of choice, ammo,
clothes, and a cooler to put your meat in. We will clean and prepare your harvest for your trip home. We
look forward to having a great hunt!
