Nashville Dealers Receive
Outrageously Dependable Service
Many were hit hard when severe
flooding took the Nashville area by
surprise in early May. A record 13
inches of rain fell in two days in the
area, flooding homes and businesses
and causing billions of dollars worth of
damage. Interstate Batteries of Music
City amped up post-flood clean-up
efforts by scrubbing, scouring and
washing hundreds of batteries that had
been sitting in mud and dirty water.

You told us,
and we listened!
According to manager Chris Wood,
salvaging some of this stock helped
minimize revenue losses for Dealers.
“In places where batteries were ruined,
the speedy delivery of replacement
batteries helped to get most Dealers
up and running within a week,” he said.
“We moved quickly to get everyone
back on their feet.”
Despite business losses and personal
hardships, Wood said that he was
impressed with the good attitudes of
his Dealers. “The good news is that the
folks we supply have been surprisingly
upbeat and positive, and are really
working hard to get back up and rolling
in the face of adversity,” he said. “And
in return, we are doing our best to give
them and their customers the most
outrageously dependable service in
the industry.”

MARINE/RV
SALES
ARE UP!
Interstate Batteries Chairman
Norm Miller meets some
inspiring people through
his involvement with the
I Am Second campaign, but
James Caldemeyer is quite a
catch. As a top bass fishing
guide at Lake Fork in Texas,
James uses his fishing expertise and first-hand knowledge
of the lake to help clients
catch the big ones. And we
mean big — it’s not uncommon
to hook a bass that weighs
more than 10 pounds!

2 / SUMMER 2010 / CURRENT / InterstateBatteries.com
Interstate’s marine battery
sales are making a splash
this year with an almost
15% increase over last
year’s sales. That’s great
news for summer outdoor
leisure markets, especially
boat and RV Dealers
who have been among
the hardest hit by the
poor economy. Marine
and RV industries share
similar obstacles when it
comes to sales because
financing “luxury” items
can be much more difficult
unless credit scores are
high. However, even the
smallest gains are good
news in the recreation
vehicle markets.
According to the Recreation Vehicle
Industry Association, RVBusiness.com
and Boating Industry magazine, the
leisure vehicle market is improving, slowly
but surely. Nationwide boat sales rose a
modest 3% the first quarter, especially
used boat sales. RV sales have increased
slightly as well, with used and repossessed
RV bargains being found across the country.
Families are taking vacations but staying
closer to home for “staycations,” and gas
prices are expected to remain lower than
last summer’s prices. So what does all this
mean for you? More used leisure vehicles
means more repairs and maintenance
opportunities. Have your RSM look over
your inventory to ensure you have the right
batteries on the rack, and let your clients
know that you also provide Interstate
marine/RV, lawn & garden, ATV, personal
watercraft, motorcycle, scooter and golf
car batteries, too.
James is equally remarkable
in his willingness to share the
uplifting story of how he overcame personal struggles, learning
to put God and others above
himself. His heartfelt account is
featured at IAmSecond.com, along
with videos of celebrities such
as former Indianapolis Colts head
coach Tony Dungy, musician
Jason Castro, first-round
NFL draft choice Sam Bradford
and former Korn lead singer
Brian Welch.

BATTERY
TRENDS
The first “car” was, in fact, an
electric car built in Holland in 1835
using non-rechargeable primary
cells. A French physicist improved
the lead-acid cell in 1859, and
4 / SUMMER 2010 / CURRENT / InterstateBatteries.com
But are these newer hybrid electric cars
really eco-friendly? A 2007 study by
CNW Marketing Research rated all model
cars sold in the United States in 2005 on
MPG ratings and the total energy used by
each car—from the concept stage to the
junkyard. This included the energy used
in designing, manufacturing, transporting,
assembling, purchasing, driving, maintenance, repairs, and finally transporting to
the scrap heap. All of these inputs were
quantified in dollars as cost per mile over
the car’s lifetime. The upshot? The environmental impact of oversized SUVs, such as
Land Rovers and Hummer H3s, amounted
to $1.94 per mile, while the Toyota Prius
came in at $3.94. Why is the actual total
energy cost of hybrids double that of
conventional vehicles? For one thing, their
battery production is not as streamlined as
the standard internal combustion engines; for
another, their overall lifetime is much lower:
landfills are piling up with hybrid car parts.
So what’s down the road for automobiles?
Electric cars are the preferred new
generation of vehicles, so look for advances
in lithium-ion batteries and longer lasting
lead-acid batteries, improved mileage and
lifespan of hybrids, advanced recycling
methods for car parts and manageable
costs to buy and maintain an electric car.
But for now, and in the foreseeable future,
lead-acid batteries are still the most utilized,
affordable and recyclable in the global
automotive industry.
G
oing “green” is a
hot topic these days,
especially with the
gulf coast oil spill,
fluctuating gasoline prices and
possibility of global warming due
to greenhouse emissions. So,
what are the latest trends and new
technologies for environmentally
friendly cars? Are hybrids and
battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
really “green?” And what will
this mean for the battery industry,
automotive repair shops and
consumers? In order to look ahead
at the future of automobiles, we
have to start at the beginning.
and dependency on foreign oil. Today,
lead-acid batteries are still preferred over
lithium-ion batteries because they are safer,
less expensive and the most recyclable,
making them the economic and ecological
front runner for BEVs and hybrid vehicles.
eventually this cell battery became
the first rechargeable promoted for
commercial use.
In the 1870s and 1880s steampowered cars were thought to be
a practical solution, but they were
heavy, needed frequent water refills
and could take several minutes to
start in cold weather. Because of
significant improvements to leadacid batteries, electric vehicles
took over again in the 1890s, but
they became unsuitable for long
distances because they needed
to be recharged.
The decline of electric cars began
in 1920 with improved road
systems that connected cities
and, therefore, precipitated the
need for longer-range vehicles.
Enter the gasoline-powered car.
The discovery of Texas crude oil
reduced the price of gas, making
it more affordable for the masses.
The invention of the electric starter
and mass production of internal
combustion engines made gas cars
even more affordable. By 1935
the electric car disappeared.

electric cars? Visit InterstateDealers.com,

On Labor Day weekend,
Interstate Batteries will
sponsor a reunion and
race featuring the classic
American speedster,
the Duesenberg.
In 1913, brothers Frederick and
August Duesenberg started a
company to build sports cars.
By the 1920s, the Duesenberg
automobiles were considered
the fastest in the world and
the ultimate American classic
in style and performance.
There’s little wonder, then,
why enthusiasts have gathered
in Auburn, Ind., for the last
55 years to celebrate the car
known as the “Deusy.”
“Interstate Batteries is proud
to showcase these beautiful
Duesenbergs and pay tribute
to one of the great pioneers in
auto design and racing,” said
Interstate Batteries Senior
Vice President and Chief
Marketing Officer Dennis
Brown. “This exhibition
of speed and special vintage
airplane fly-in will be one
of the highlight events of
the reunion, and Interstate
Batteries is excited
to be a part of this
entertaining weekend.”
For more information
on the event, visit

The Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Reunion will be a national

automobiles. And for the first
time in the event’s history,
Duesenbergs will line up
to race. The inaugural Ab

OUR NASCAR DRIVERS SET THE PACE IN 2010
For the first few weeks of the 2010 NASCAR
Sprint Cup season, Team Interstate/Joe
Gibbs Racing seemed to stay off the
leaderboard. Drivers Kyle Busch and Denny
Hamlin, both preseason favorites to contend
for the championship, suffered bad luck at
inopportune times. Although they frequently
led laps, they were unable to turn in top
finishes. Teammate Joey Logano started his
sophomore season strong, but still wasn’t
considered dominant.
6 / SUMMER 2010 / CURRENT / InterstateBatteries.com
Then came Martinsville in late March, a race marked
by the return of the spoiler to Cup series racing.
And Team Interstate/JGR hasn’t looked back since.
With a 1-2 finish by Hamlin and Logano at Martinsville,
Team Interstate began a winning streak of seven out
of 10 Cup races. Hamlin followed up his Martinsville
win with victories at Texas, Darlington, Pocono and
Michigan, and Busch visited Victory Lane at Richmond
and Dover. Fifteen races into the season, and
Team Interstate/JGR had won 46% of the Sprint
Cup races—not bad, considering the rough start!

Kyle Busch won two Cup

and seven Nationwide

as of July 9.
Team Interstate proved dominating in the
Nationwide Series, too. As of July 9, Busch
had seven wins, and Hamlin and Logano each
had one. In Kentucky on June 12, Logano made
history by becoming the first Nationwide Series
driver to win three consecutive races at the
same track when starting from the pole.
The results are clear: Kyle, Denny and Joey

Outrageously Dependable
Battery Inventory, at
YOUR shop!
In today’s automotive
industry, batteries must
come in all shapes and
sizes to fit the wide range of
vehicle makes and models.
The challenge is to know
how many of each kind of
battery to stock for the needs
of your customers. That’s
why Interstate designed the
Dealer Inventory Optimization
system as a tool to help you
manage your inventory.
How does the
system work?
Interstate’s optimization
system uses information
from vehicle registrations
in your local area along
with past sales history to
make automotive inventory
recommendations. This
helps ensure that your supply

In addition to automotive and
truck batteries, the Australian
market also presents a fantastic
opportunity for marine and
recreational vehicle sales.
The Interstate footprint is
also expanding in Central
America. In June, an
independent distributorship
opened in Guatemala City.
And Interstate’s distributor

dependable battery. Making this
messaging visible to consumers with
external and internal point-of-purchase
(POP) is key to increasing Interstate
battery sales.
POP is one of the most important
touch points you have with consumers,
who make 80% of their retail purchases
at point-of-purchase. And signage is
the No. 2 way people are exposed to a
brand. A recent study found that 64%
of all consumers have a regular garage/
auto repair (GAR) relationship, yet
only 15% who have a regular garage
responded that they purchased their
recent battery at a GAR Dealer. This is a
huge opportunity for Dealers to make
sure that consumers do consider GAR
Dealers when they need a battery.
And our POP has been developed to
do just that.
Interstate’s new POP messaging
communicates outrageous
dependability in a variety of ways—
from banners, counter mats and
headers to window clings, pole signs
and warranty envelopes. Talk to
