U.S. Air Force and Army counterparts joined together with service
members from nine allied countries
to participate in International Jump
Week July 6 to 10 on Ramstein.
The five-day event was hosted by
the 435th Contingency Response
Group and gave multiple nations
the opportunity to work side by
side, increasing interoperability and
strengthening relationships.
“The overall goal of this event is
to get everyone to work with each
other,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Zavala,
435th Security Forces Squadron
jumpmaster. “We’re all NATO allies,
so it’s important we know each other’s procedures and that people take
the skills they learned here back to
their home stations.”
Paratroopers traveled throughout
Europe, including England, Poland,
Greece, France, Germany, Estonia,
Czech Republic, Belgium and as far
away as New Zealand to build stronger partnerships by jumping out of
multiple Wing C-130J Super Hercules
aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift
Squadron on Ramstein.
“It’s diffi cult to do jumps in
England because of the weather and
aircraft availability,” said Royal Air
Force Sgt. William Bunday, Airborne
Delivery Wing jumpmaster. “The
U.S. always has several shoots to
jump and aircraft available. This
is my second year coming to jump
week, and everyone always enjoys
it. It’s a great time, and we’ll come
back every year we’re invited.”
The feeling of building camaraderie through jumping out of an aircraft
from thousands of feet up in the air
was shared among paratroopers.
“Being able to jump with the foreign paratroopers is an absolute privilege,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt.

Air Force members grow with change
COMMENTARY
by Lt. Col. John Hansen
86th Comptroller Squadron
commander
Over many decades, the Air
Force has emphasized continuous
process improvement. In the beginning of my career, the process was
called Total Quality Management.
Then it transformed to Lean Six
Sigma before finally changing into
Air Force Smart Operations in the
21st century. Process improvement
is always with us.
Process improvement comes to
us in many ways, but I would
like to concentrate on process
improvement starting from the
ground up, which should happen
when new personnel enter into a
group or organization. Many times
when a member transitions into an
organization, they start on a position which is new to them. They
may have done something similar earlier in their career, or they
may remember being trained in
that area during technical school
or other functional training, but
at that time and in that place they
have never performed that job.
For example, in the financial
management world, a staff sergeant may have worked in financial services during his or her
entire career. Now they will move
to Ramstein Air Base to work in
financial analysis (budget). They
had some budget training in technical school, but now they have to
learn the ropes from either a military or civilian financial analyst.
Process improvement should
begin here. The sergeant should
try to take in as much information as possible from this training,
but he or she has a responsibility to fully understand and challenge the person training them.
In order to do the job to the best
of their ability, they need to thoroughly conceptualize what they
are doing and how their job fits
into the bigger picture. They must
constantly ask their trainer and
supervisor why they are doing the
job a certain way. If it is different
from what they learned previously, ask the supervisor why. If it
does not make sense, ask. It is up
to the trainer or supervisor to find
the best answer to those ques-
tions. If that is not possible, then
the supervisor needs to find the
answer or the process may need
to be changed.
In the 86th Comptroller
Squadron, we rotate military
members in and out of different positions during their tour
here. Part of this stems from a
desire to create a balance in their
careers between financial analysis and financial services and for
exposure to all aspects of each
of those flights. However, we
also do this in order to encourage process improvement. We
want their job knowledge to be
fresh and for them to challenge
the way we do business. We do
not want processes to be stale
but to have continued relevance
to the mission and goals for our
organization.
This process should be the
same for a member changing jobs
within the squadron as it is for
people coming to the squadron
from technical school or a different base. Personnel new to their
job must use their previous experience and education, whatever
that happens to be, to provide
that exchange of information and
ideas to improve processes.
Transitioning personnel from
one job to the other serves to professionally develop members of
the unit. Not only are processes
getting challenged and improved,
but members of the unit are getting exposure to and gaining mastery of different aspects of the
operation and their career field.
Airmen are getting developed for
the benefit of the unit, the career
field and the Air Force.
In summary, organizations
should be completely open to suggestions by members of all ranks
from the Airman basic to the field
grade officer; from the civilian to
the contractor. Commanders and
directors have a responsibility to
create an environment where suggestions flourish.
Process improvement starts
from the ground up, and with an
atmosphere conducive to suggestions, Airmen have a responsibility to make their suggestions and
make their office, organization,
unit and Air Force stronger.

Ramstein member’s artwork to be displayed in world’s largest museum
grow from a simple drawing to
an incredible piece of art. I’ve
always known he’s talented,
but when he told me one of
his portraits is going into the
Smithsonian, I thought, ‘Wow.’
I wasn’t shocked because I
know he’s good enough, but
it was just surreal and I was
so proud of him. He’s puts so
much emotion and hard work
into each piece.”
The Smithsonian Institution
will have the exhibit’s induction ceremony today through
Sunday and is expected to
open it to the public this
November.

Art can take many forms
and shapes and encompasses
an infinite amount of mediums.
Some artists use their skills as
a hobby while others make it a
full-time job. With passion and
dedication, great talent doesn’t
always go unnoticed.
For Kevin Lewis, 86th
Force Support Squadron program coordinator, his artistic
endowment landed one of his
art pieces in the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington
D.C. Lewis’ portrait will be
in a memorial exhibit for
the late hip-hop producer,
J Dilla.
Lewis said having his work
displayed at the Smithsonian
Institution is the greatest
honor he has been given,
though his career as an artist
was not always this gratifying.
“While we were stationed
in Maryland, I couldn’t find
a job,” Lewis said. “My gracious wife said, ‘You already
have a job. Run with your art.
We’re not hurting financially
right now so do it,’ and I did.”
Lewis said his wife, Master
Sgt. Reatrina Lewis, 86th
Logistics Readiness Squadron
section chief of current operations, is his biggest supporter
and has always encouraged
him to pursue his passion for
art.
“I started doing art shows
and met with a lot of com-
munity activists,” he said. “I
would also do live painting
events and that would lead me
to getting other jobs.”
During one of these events,
Lewis’ talent was discovered.
“I used to work for a radio
station where we’d hold clothing and canned food drives,”
Lewis said. “We would throw
big parties to help us fund
these drives. There was one
foundation we worked with,
the J Dilla Foundation. It’s a
foundation for a guy (James
Dewitt Yancey, also known as
J Dilla or Jay Dee) who was a
hip-hop producer who died of
lupus. We were raising awareness for their foundation as
well as lupus. I was doing a
painting of him at the event
and his mother was touched
by it, so it was only right I
gave it to her.
“Unbeknownst to me, a
couple months later, I got a
phone call from the foundation saying they had a surprise for me,” he continued. “I
wasn’t really worried about it
because I was about to (make
a permanent change of sta-
tion) to Ramstein. I thought
maybe they were going to
have me make a T-shirt for
the foundation or something,
but it turns out they had a
big concert in Washington
D.C. They brought J Dilla’s
musical equipment up on
stage along with my painting.
That’s when they announced
they would be inducting them
into the Smithsonian as an
exhibit.”
Lewis said the news was
a great honor and extremely humbling. He admits he’s
still shocked and excited for
the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“I still get goose bumps
thinking about it,” Lewis said.
“I know a lot of artists who
don’t get this opportunity or
exposure, so I’m very thankful.”
His wife has watched him
grow through his art and is
continuously astounded by
his abilities and dedication to
his passion.
“Every day, he really amazes
me,” Lewis’ wife said. “I see
him start a portrait and watch it

In the last three years, there
was an average of about 100
break-ins in the Westpfalz
region in July and August.
To avoid becoming a part
of these statistics, German
Polizei ask people leaving
for a vacation to obey the following tips:
• Close all windows and
doors. Especially the ones on
the bottom floor, in the basement and on top floors that
can be accessed over balconies or spurs.
• Ask a neighbor or friend
to check the house, and
empty the mailbox regularly.
It’s best to move the rolllad-
ens up and down and to turn
lights on from time to time.
• Residents shouldn’t
place information about their
vacation such as where they
are going and for how long
on social media. Likewise,
they should not leave such a
message on their answering
machine.
• Leave valuables in a
safe location, mark them and
establish an inventory listing. Add photos in color to
the listing and store in a safe
spot.
• Don’t leave spare keys
in the backyard or under the
door mat.

Medical Support Unit-Europe gains new commander
by 221st Public Affairs
Detachment
Soldiers, families and friends of the
Medical Support Unit-Europe welcomed Lt. Col. Bidemi Y. OlaniyiLeyimu during a July 11 change
of command ceremony at Daenner
Kaserne.
Olaniyi-Leyimu, a medical officer
who earned her doctor of medicine
from the University of Maryland,
assumed command of the unit from
Col. Jenifer Hug during a ceremony officiated by Brig. Gen. Arlan
DeBlieck, commander of the 7th Civil
Support Command.
“The MSU-E will be gaining a truly great leader in Lt. Col.
Olaniyi-Leyimu. I’ve heard nothing
but great things about her abilities.
She respects and values her team,”
DeBlieck said. “I have no doubt
she’ll bring great ideas and enthusiasm to the MSU-E.”

receives the unit guidon from Brig. Gen. Arlan M. DeBlieck, commander of the 7th Civil Support
Command, during a ceremony held July 11 on the Daenner Kaserne parade field. The passing of
the guidon is a tradition symbolizing the changing of command.
Olaniyi-Leyimu thanked Col. Hug
for her reception and mentoring. She
then spoke words of encouragement
to her fellow Soldiers.
“I look forward to working with
you to solve the tough problems
to take this unit to the next level,”
Olaniyi-Leyimu said.
Under Col. Hug, the MSU-E not
only survived, but thrived, DeBlieck
said. The MSU-E’s achievements nest
with the enduring priorities set by the
commander of U.S. Army Europe, Lt.
Gen. Ben Hodges, he said.
Hug oversaw growth in the unit,
increasing from 46 to 93 Soldiers,
while unit initiatives enhanced the
readiness of Reserve and active-duty
Soldiers. MSU-E led community outreach for the U.S. Army in Germany by
showcasing its capabilities for the past
three years at Rheinland-Pfalz Tag.
Recently, MSU-E took part in the
7th CSC exercise DAIMIEL 15 in
Spain, working alongside Spanish
army emergency management units.
MSU-E Soldiers also ran medical
clinics for civilians in Africa.
“The unit has accomplished great
things during her tenure, especially when viewed in line with the
USAREUR commander’s ‘Strong
Europe’ priorities,” DeBlieck said.

organizational restructure during a ceremony July 10 at the
Sembach soccer field.
The combined command
was named Regional Health

of the MEDCOM initiative to
reorganize five Army Regional
Medical Commands into four

for Soldiers, family members,
retirees and Army civilians.
The new design elevates
the subordinate commands

to principal staff elements
within MEDCOM headquarters and creates a single point
of accountability for health
readiness within each region.
MEDCOM’s priorities remain unchanged to include:
combat casualty care, readiness and health of the force, a
ready and deployable medical
force and the health of families and retirees.
Brig. Gen. Norvell V. Coots,

said. “Our goal is for this
transition to be completely
seamless to our patients.”
These changes posture
Army Medicine to best support the Army’s current and

lives and striving to exceed
all expectations.”
CAN YOU DONATE?
Cauliflower cream soup...
...and a refreshing dessert:
Strawberries in cold milk
What do we need?
Ingredients for the soup:
The water we cooked the cauliflower in
last week, margarine, flour, milk, liquid
cream or creme fraîche, salt, ground
white pepper and nutmeg.
Ingredients for the dessert:
fresh strawberries, sugar, cold milk
How to prepare the cream soup:
Take a pot, put margarine in it (1 teaspoon to 1 spoon of flour). Let it heat up.
Add the flour to it and reduce the heat. Stir
the flour softly so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot and doesn’t get burned.
When the flour starts to turn to a
slight amber colour and doesn’t stick
to the bottom, add half a liter of milk.
Then take a whisk and stir thoroughly, while adding the cauliflower water.
Turn the heat back on again. Keep on
stiring and the soup will get a thick texture. Let it simmer slightly for about half
an hour until the soup has got a nice
homogenous texture.
Then add salt, ground white pepper
and nutmeg and let it simmer for another
half an hour. After that, add the cream or
creme fraîche. Pay attention not to heat
up the soup to its boiling point again because otherwise the cream will curdle.
How to prepare the
refreshing dessert:
Wash the strawberries and cut
away the green little leaves and the
stalk. Then cut the berries in half and
put them in a bowl. Add sugar and let
it rest for about half an hour, until the
bottom of the bowl is covered in red
strawberry juice. Taste the strawberries
if they are sweet enough for you. If not,
just add a bit more sugar and let it rest a
bit longer. After that, just add cold milk
to it and you have a delicious and refreshing summer dessert.
Next week we will make some
sliced chicken, which also is a
good meal for the hotter days.

Mannie’s travels: Swiss Chocolate Train
Story and photos by Mannie Daly
Family and Morale, Welfare and
Recreation summer intern
O
ver Fourth of July weekend,
I had the privilege of going
on the Swiss Chocolate
Train trip with Outdoor
Recreation.
This trip pays a visit to both a
chocolate factory and a cheese factory in Switzerland. Our day started at
9 a.m., when we boarded the luxurious
Swiss Chocolate Train in Montreux,
Switzerland. We were served a chocolate croissant, mini chocolates and a
drink of our choice.
The group was given a little over
an hour at the chocolate factory in
Broc, Switzerland. Groups are taken
through an easy-to-understand, animated tour about the history of the
factory’s chocolate, the oldest Swiss
chocolate brand still in existence.
A running production line gives an
up-close look at how the chocolates
are produced and packaged. A camera
scans each and every piece of chocolate to ensure that it is the right size
and length; if not, they are pulled off
the line before the wrapping station.
Before heading off to the chocolate
tasting, visitors were given the opportunity to feel and smell various ingredients used in these chocolates. The
tasting at the end of the tour did not
disappoint. Roughly a dozen different
types of white, milk and dark chocolate
The town of Gruyere, Switzerland.

were available for sampling. The gift
shop sells everything sampled and so
much more. As a chocolate fanatic, the
chocolate factory was such a pleasant
experience. Next up, Gruyere.
We were given a couple hours to
explore the small, medieval town of
Gruyere. Gruyere is home to the Tibet
Museum, the Gruyere Castle and the
H.R. Giger Museum. Paintings and
sculptures take you into the fascinating, obscure mind of the man behind
the film, “Alien.”
After exploring the town, the
group traveled onward to the cheese
factory, where we were greeted with
cheese samples. We sampled cheeses
aging at six, eight and 10 months so
we could taste the difference at various maturities. Visual displays took
us through the process of cheese production, all the way down to what the
cows are fed in order to ensure the
best milk. It takes 400 liters of milk
to produce just one round of cheese.
Videos provide an in-depth look at
the machinery and labor put into
producing gruyere cheese. Finally, a
cellar displays thousands of wheels
of maturing cheese.
Following the cheese factory, we
took the Swiss Chocolate Train back
to Montreux, where the Montreux
Jazz Festival was in full swing. Food
stands and live music lined the streets.
The lively atmosphere from the festival and the incredible landscape made
for a memorable night. Many people
had the opportunity to enjoy incredible
views by boat from Lake Geneva.
Touring the chocolate and cheese
factories was such a unique, once-ina-lifetime experience.

Jazz festival takes place at Nanstein Castle
Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl will be the stage for
the annual “Burg Jazz” music
festival July 24 and 25. For
the 18th year, the Unnerhaus
Culture Club will present six
bands performing big band
jazz, rock, blues, Dixieland
and pop music.
”Our Burg Jazz music festival in Landstuhl will again
fascinate with high quality
world musicians inside the
atmospheric courtyard of
Nanstein Castle,” said Willi
Ningelgen, a UCC member. “Like in recent years
we expect visitors from the
KMC, Germany and Europe,
who will find their way to
Nanstein Castle.”
The festival will kick off
at 7 p.m. July 24 with one of
Europe’s top jazz bands, Les
Zauto Stompers from Paris.
The quintet is known to perform authentic Dixieland jazz
in fancy outfits at “old jazz”
festivals throughout France,
Germany and other European
countries.
They will be followed by
the top act of Friday evening, the Jaworek-Reinhardt
Ensemble with singer Ms.
Djulia from Russia performing Sinti jazz as well as
French musette, Hungarian
folk and Latin American
rhythms.
The first festival day will
come to a close around midnight with an after-show
party highlighting regional stars. Smitty, Molli and
Corinna will play a variety of blues, rock and soul
music in the castle battery
tower.
On July 25, Burg Jazz
will continue at 5 p.m.

At 7 p.m., Peter Bühr and
his Flat Foot Stompers start
performing. Bühr together
with Andy Lawrence, cornet and vocals, Thomas

A medieval curtain wall
and Baroque buildings will
set the stage for the annual
Stadtmauerfest, or town wall
fest, today through Monday
in Freinsheim.
This traditional wine fest
will lure visitors to both sides
of the 1.5-km long town wall
from the 15th century, which
is known to be one of the biggest and nicest town fortification facilities in RheinlandPfalz.
There will be 20 different
food and wine booths placed
throughout the historical winegrowing village. Visitors can
stroll along the narrow streets
where local vintners, restaurant owners and associations
will serve Palatinate culinary
specialties and regional wines.
The fest will officially open
at 7 p.m. today on the historical Marktplatz. Diverse
music groups will perform
until 1 a.m.
The Stadtmauerfest will
begin at 4 p.m. Saturday and
Monday, and at 11:30 a.m.
Sunday. Numerous bands will
entertain visitors with various music styles in different
locations.
The old part of town will
be closed to motorized traffic. Visitors are asked to
park at the edge of town.
From here, they are only
a few steps away from the
center of town.
Visitors wanting to explore
Freinsheim’s historical gates
and towers need about an
hour if walking along the
town wall.
So why do you keep calling me Lord,
Lord when you don’t do what I say?
Visitors enjoy the atmosphere of the
medieval part of town during the
town wall fest today to Sunday in

A Spectacular Bird Show in Potzberg
Last week I decided to take my
teenage daughters to the Wildpark
Potzberg. The only thing I knew
about this was that they had a bird
show that featured falcons and Bald
Eagles. I have never been to a bird
show nor was I overly excited about
going to this one, but my daughters
wanted to go. So, off we went.
I was pleasantly surprised at this
show! This is a family-owned property and you can tell that they pour
their heart and soul into it. The owner, Harald Schauss, does a wonderful job with the management of this
beautiful park and the animals and
birds are friendly as well.
When Arriving
When we arrived in the parking lot, I noticed that there is an
abundance of hiking trail information. There is also a hotel and restaurant. After we paid our entrance
fee of 24 Euro (8 Euro for adults and
5,50 Euro for children over age 4), we
stopped by the café to get a snack.
Our primary purpose in going was
to see the “Birds of Prey Show” which
starts every day at 3 p.m. through
the end of October. We had about
30 minutes of free time to roam the
property before the show started.
Petting Zoo
Even though my girls are teenagers, they still love petting zoos! At the
restaurant there is outside seating

kept talking in German.
that overlooks a playground and an
area for feeding and petting goats. I
have to admit that I fell in love with a
tiny goat and for a brief moment entertained the idea of having one as a
pet. And then I woke up and realized
that was a bad idea. (Note: There is
animal food for sale in the park, so
please do not feed the animals any
human food!)
As we walked towards the show
area, we saw horses, rams and several
free-roaming bunnies.
Other Sections of the Park
There is one section of the park
that we did not walk through and I
believe this is where the peacocks,
white deer, elk and donkeys are kept.
We also passed the cages of several
different species of birds. I was a bit
sad during this portion of the walk to
see these beautiful creatures in cages
and tethered to posts. They seemed
to be well taken care of, so I had to
let it go.
The Bird Show
Once we passed the cages, the
property opened up to the seating
area for the show and, literally, the
view is breathtaking. It is a stunning
location to watch eagles soar!
The show lasts about one hour
and is in German with no English
translation. However, there were a
couple of English words. Apparently,
there are two Bald Eagles named Air
Force One and Obama. This prompted a chuckle from the audience. It
really was a lot of fun and somewhat
strangely peaceful to watch these
beautiful creatures soar. And Mr.
Schauß is quite comical so he had the
birds do tricks by flying extremely
close to our heads. He even managed
to get Air Force One to land about 2
inches from my shoulder.
After the Show
Children’s Birthday Party
I did ask one of the interns who
spoke English about the children’s
birthday parties. I was told that you
can have your child’s birthday party
there and that each child will get an
opportunity to hold one of the owls.
If you could have seen the faces of the
small children there who were thrilled
to just pet an owl, you would book a
party there immediately! Visit the
park’s website for more information.
Note: Dogs are allowed in the
park, but they are not allowed in the
area where the “Birds of Prey Show”
is conducted, for obvious reasons.
If you have small children and you
don’t want to bring your stroller, they
do have wagons for rent for less than
€5.
How to Get There
The park is located in Föckelberg
and is around 30 minutes northwest
of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 40 minutes southwest of Wiesbaden and 2
hours and 45 minutes northwest of
Stuttgart.

At the end of the show a little boy
(who we assumed to be Mr. Shauss’
son) appears with a very small owl
and gives everyone in the audience
an opportunity to pet the owl. He
proceeded to educate my girls (in
German) about the owl. This was
quite funny to watch since they kept
