Hi All,
Has the weather been hot enough for you? To cool down think about
skiing – snow skiing of course. Special thanks go to all of our ski trip
coordinators for working so hard on their trips. Just the thought of skiing
down a slope at Telluride, Taos, Durango, Beaver Creek or Crested Butte
gives me the shivers. So sign up for a trip for an immediate cool down.
The Huntsville Ski Club Membership Party will be on September 10 at
Ditto Landing. This is a great time to invite your friends to come see what
we are all about. I challenge each of you to bring a potential new
member to the Membership Party. Huntsville Ski Club is always looking
for active fun people to join us.
Once again check out the HSC calendar and sign up early for all of the activities being offered. Each
of our directors has gone out of their way to ensure that our members do not get bored and have nothing
to do.
I hope to see each of you at the Membership Meeting on August 17th.

Ah….Summertime! The time of the year when you get together with
your friends. By now, everyone has switched to that “Summer” frame of
mind and thinking of vacations – long, lazy days by the pool or at the
beach, hanging out at one of the many social events or just doing nothing.
Whatever you do, I hope you have fun and survive the extreme heat!

Why haven't I received my e-News Alerts?
If you are not receiving your e-News Alert sent from the HSC website, it could be due to one
of the following reasons:
1. Registration was incomplete
During the registration process an email is sent out asking you to click a link to verify your
email address. If this step is not completed your account will not be activated and
consequently your eNews Alert selection will not be activated.
2. Check your SPAM Filter Settings
If you are subscribed to or using a spam filter it maybe possible that e-mails from our email
service are directed to a spam folder. For example, some spam filters may place all e-mail
from the ".org" domain in the junk mail folder, requiring the customer to add
"[email protected]" as an approved sender to receive these messages in their
inbox. Please consult your spam filter documentation about how to ensure that your HSC eNews Alerts are not going in a spam folder. All e-mail from this service will be sent from
"[email protected]". Members should „white list‟ the “@huntsvilleskiclub.org”
domain so they may receive all notifications from the club web site and not just the Towncrier
emails.
3. Not Subscribed
Members must choose to receive the eNews Alerts… It is not automatic because many
members choose to use a faux email address and HSC policy is not to be preceived as a
spammer orgainizaiton..
4. Members are unsubscribed to eNews Alerts when…
a. Inbox is full
The HSC received bounced email messages with a message that recipient‟s inbox is full on
multiple occasions will be unsubscribed.
b. Faux email address
Member‟s using the faux email address @foo.foo will be unsubscribed from receiving eNews
Alerts.
c. Bad email address
When an email/internet service provider reports the email address does not exist or has a
fatal error members are unsubscribed.

TELLURIDE SKI TRIP
January 21-28, 2012
There is no place like Telluride,
Always, Think Snow!

Telluride Ski Resort and Mountain Village is perched in the heart of
the San Juan Mountains. The 360 degree view of the towering
mountainscapes will take your breath away. Not only does it offer
2000 skiable acres with 18 chairs, 2 gondolas, 2 magic carpets and
2 surface lifts, there are NO LIFT lines. Terrain is 23% beginner
which includes the 4.6 mile Galloping Goose run, 38% intermediate
with the 3 mile long See Forever run which offers a panoramic view of
the Utah Mountains and 38% expert with runs like Spiral Stairs and
The Plunge that will drop you into the town of Telluride with a vertical
drop of 4,425 feet. This is a mountain that you will always want to go
back to, the way I have done time after time since 1975.
Accommodations will be at the Ice House Lodge and Condominiums. This southwest
property has an indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub, steam room, and open spaces such as the
game room, lounge area and Rico‟s Bar. In the morning the group can meet for a
complimentary continental breakfast and in the afternoon after a hard day of skiing for happy
hour at Rico‟s Bar. This gives you many opportunities to meet up with your ski pals. This
property is in one of the best locations in town. You are one-half block (50 yards) from Town
Lift #8 and the gondola that will drop you off at the slope mid mountain or take you to the
Mountain Village. You do not need a car because the Old Town of Telluride is right out your
front door. You have the convenience of walking to the grocery store and the beautiful old
Victorian town to shop.
Your Trip Leader Janet, will arrange for group ski rental from Telluride Sports which is next to
the gondola. You will be able to store your skis there at night. Prices per person include 7
Nights Lodging, Porter fees, Welcome Party, and Continental Breakfast.

DURANGO SKI TRIP
January 28 - February 4, 2012
Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is nestled in the rugged SanJuan Mountains
of Southwest Colorado. We will be staying slopeside in Purgatory Village. These ski
in/ski out.
accommodations offer spectacular views and easy
access to all resort amenities of shops and
restaurants. You have your choice of a Studio unit or a
King Hotel room.
The Studio Unit is 400 SQ FT. with a Queen size pull
down Murphy Bed, one Q sleeper sofa, one full bath,
fireplace, and kitchenette including mini fridge, 2 burners,
coffeepot, toaster, and microwave. The King Hotel Room
is 300 SQ FT. of standard hotel room with King bed, one full bath, color TV, coffee pot, and
hairdryer. The roof top hot tub and sauna is easily accessible by elevator and gives you the
great outdoors while you soak your cares away. While there are several restaurants at the
resort you can also head out to the historic mining town of Durango. In 25 miles you have
access to “One of America's Best Small Towns” as named by Outside Magazine. Here you
will find dining and shopping opportunities, and 4 microbreweries.
Mountain Stats: 1,325 skiable acres, 85+ runs, 10 lifts, 2 terrain parks, 35,000 acres of
Snowcat skiing. The new Legends Expansion opens up 125 acres of new tree skiing with
1,200 vertical feet of steep terrain. 21% beginner terrain. 46% intermediate terrain. 33%
expert terrain.
The Durango area offers plenty of non-ski activities for a day away from the slopes.
Possibilities include Snowmobile Adventures, Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad
through the mountains, Sleigh Rides, Trimble Hot Springs, and Mesa Verde National Park (cliff
dwellings). There is also a Nordic Center offering 16 km of groomed track.

BEAVER CREEK SKI TRIP
February 4-11, 2012
Ski Beaver Creek – Not Exactly Roughing It!
We will be staying in the Kiva deluxe 2 bedroom condos which are conveniently located
in upper Beaver Creek village and features its own private ski-way that provides easy
ski-in, ski-out access to Beaver Creek Mountain. The Kiva is tucked away on the Eastern
side of Beaver Creek in the Highlands area, boasting views of the ski hills, the village,
and down valley. The condos have a large living area, a fully equiped kitchen, 2 baths,
and 2 bedrooms. One bedroom has a King bed, while the other bedroom has 2 Queens.
The rooms also have a washer and dryer, wood burning fireplace, free wi-fi, and daily
housekeeping. The property has a large, year-round pool, and patio area with 2 hot tubs,
BBQ grills, steam & sauna, private change area and covered parking.
Beaver Creek has a total of 1,845 acres of which 34% are easiest, 38 % are more difficult,
and 28% are most difficult. The area is accessable with 16 lifts of which most are high
speed quads. If this is not enough area for you , Vail with 5,289 acres is located adjacent to
Beaver Creek with an easy bus ride.

annual Membership/Wine&Cheese Party on the beautiful Tennessee

memberships, it has become one of the Clubs favorite events of the

Like the slogan says, "It's So Much More Than Skiing!" - Join in upcoming socials for the summer.
We are only successful if you participate by attending and by hosting a potluck social…
Socials are tradetionally held each Friday night at 6 pm. Each attendee brings potluck dish to share and
whatever „libation‟ you want to have. Soft drinks and paper products are provided by the host.
Socials are held each Friday Night if possible. Mary Lou Lewis will organize attendance at various
restaurants if no cookouts are scheduled. So be sure to keep your eye on the online
calendar.

VOLLEYBALL:
As promised we have added volleyball to the schedule. Volleyball is a great cross-training opportunity. We will participate in an
open gym volleyball group that meets Mon, Wed and Fri mornings at 8:15 am for a couple of hours. The group meets indoors in the
gym at the Optimist Recreation Center, 703 Oakwood Ave, Huntsville, AL (256) 427-5775. All ability levels are welcome. The
participants are mostly retired senior level adults. There is no charge. Just show up with your sneakers on and a smile on your
face. For those that wish to play during the evening, we will participate in open-play on Tuesday evenings 6 am – 9 pm at Optimist
Recreation Center. This opportunity for evening play is during the summer only. Two to four courts will be utilized for players of all
ages and ability levels.
T’AI CHI:
We will join the T‟ai Chi study group Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:15 am for an hour long session. There is no cost and all are
welcome. T‟ai Chi is an elegant low impact Chinese system of slow meditative physical exercise designed for relaxation, balance
and health. It is holistic, easy on bone joints, promotes deep breathing, is great for the lower back, fun to learn, and enhances
relaxation. This is an open gym session. No formal instruction will be provided. The protocol is to fall in ranks behind the leader and
mimic the movements to the best of your ability. The group meets in the gym at the Optimist Recreation Center, 703 Oakwood Ave,
Huntsville, AL (256) 427-5775. A class will be identified in the near future for those wishing to pay for formal instruction.
TENNIS:
Round-robin doubles is held every Saturday morning at Huntsville High School at 8:00 am. No partner is needed. All ability levels

BIKING:
 Breakfast Ride – Each Sunday: Ride begins from Tony's Little Italy located at 7 Town Center Drive, Huntsville. Ride
begins at 9:00 am sharp! We ride to Mullins Restaurant located at 607 Andrew Jackson Way NE, Huntsville for breakfast!
 Aldridge Creek – Each Wednesday: We leave at 1:15 pm. The total length of the Greenway including the section along
the Tennessee River is a little over 11 miles round trip and basically flat. There is a small park with parking/restrooms near
the northern end of the greenway where we meet. Directions are South on Memorial Pkwy, Left (East) on Weatherly Rd for
1.5 mi, Right (South) on Bailey Cove for 1.5 mi, Right (West) on Mountain Gap. The park is on the left about one block from
Bailey Cove on Mountain Gap. This outing is suitable for bikers and walkers of all ability levels.

Subaru is a proud sponsor of the Crescent Ski Council (CSC) Racing program. Part of their sponsorship
package this year includes the VIP Discount program for all CSC members. Qualifying members of a
CSC club can purchase or lease a new Subaru at 2% below dealer cost minus any incentives,
which are currently being offered. To qualify, you must have been a member of the Huntsville Ski Club
for at least six (6) months. If you are interested, please notify Bob Breeden at –email address [email protected] of your intent to participate. Subaru will mail the VIP information to you,
which will include information about local dealers participating in the VIP program. Once you have
received the information, you can go to a local dealer, pick out the Subaru that you want, the dealer will
pull the invoice and let the purchaser/leasee know if there are any current incentives. Please take
advantage of this wonderful benefit that Crescent Racing has secured for all CSC clubs.
