Welcome to Youth Enfield magazine.
6-7
Councillor Charalambous interview
The 2011 disturbances in Enfield took us by surprise. Not only by
the extent of the disturbances that happened but because young
people were telling us that there‘s not a lot to do in the borough.
8-9
Things to do
This is surprising as we provide dedicated services for young
people aged 13 to 19 years of age (or up to 25 for young people
with a learning difficulty or disability) and investing in young
people is, and will continue to be, a high priority for us.
12 - 13 Youth Services at a glance
Through our Youth Support Service we provide a wide range
of things to do and places to go and work with so many other
local organisations serving the community to offer young people
an exciting range of activities and opportunities to do in their
leisure time.
Therefore it has become clear to us that we need to tell young
people about what we do and improve the way we communicate
the services and activities available to them.
This is where our new Youth Enfield magazine comes in. This
magazine’s focus is about telling young people about the range
of services and activities available and for young people who are
already participating in these activities to share their experiences.

Craig Park Youth Centre in Edmonton is
being transformed into one of the best
centres of its kind anywhere in the country.
£3.4million of Big Lottery funding was
secured by the amazing efforts of young
people, youth workers and other agencies
at Craig Park Youth Centre.
This will bring state-of-the-art facilities to
the centre including recording, radio and
TV broadcasting studios, media suite, gym
and dance studio, gaming area, youth cafe
and multi use games area.
This new youth centre will be open seven
days a week and will offer young people
the chance to take part in sports and
art as well as access a range of support
services.
It will be a place of peace and aspiration,
where young people can express and
develop their talents and importantly, it will
be a place for young people where they
can be young people.
The centre opens its doors this April so
put a note in your diary to check out the
new centre and make the most of this
wonderful facility.

We’ve won an award recognising the great work we do for young people in Enfield!
We picked up a sought after Children
& Young People Now award for our
Enfield Young People (EYP) project to
tackle teenage pregnancy.
Developed by Enfield Council’s Teenage
Pregnancy Unit, the 12 week scheme
sees 13 and 14 year olds caring for
young children in local nurseries and
receiving vital sex and relationships
education. Facilitated by trained
volunteers, the young people get a
taste of how challenging it would be if
they were to have a baby as a teenager.
Young people’s relationships with
teachers, parents and peers “improved
drastically” during and after the project,
say coordinators. Meanwhile, nurseries
welcome the joy bought to the lives
of those toddlers who previously had
difficulties joining in, thanks to the one-toone attention of the teenagers.

see improved communications with young
people so that they can feedback what’s
important to them and we can showcase
what the Council has to offer too.
Improvements to the Youth Enfield website
and greater use of social media has
already been achieved but I am also trying
to make myself as accessible to young
people and today is an example of that. I
want young people to be assured that I will
support their views in the Council.
Area Youth Forum interviews
Councillor Charalambous
We met Councillor Bambos Charalambous - Enfield Council’s Cabinet
Member for Culture, Leisure, Youth and Localism - to quiz him over what
the Council is doing to support young people.
We started off with a few quick-fire ‘getting
to know you’ questions...
What was your first ever job?
Packing pleated skirts in a warehouse in
Edmonton aged 13.
What’s your favourite food?
I love Mediterranean cuisine - especially
Italian!
Why did you get into politics?
I had a yearning to speak up for people
and fight injustice. The best way to
do that was to get involved. I joined
the school council and studied law
at university. I take pride in having an
influence on decisions that can make a
6
real difference to people’s lives.
What is your favourite music?
Indie music and especially as I have a
family member in an Indie band called
Worst Case Scenario formed with other
members at Winchmore School. Their
highlight came a few months back when
they played at a major Shoreditch venue.
What’s your favourite football team?
Sorry North Londoners but I’m a massive
Chelsea fan!
With everyone warmed up, we asked
some meatier, youth service related
questions...
Youth Enfield / 4YP Enfield
What do you think about the recent
cuts to youth services in other
boroughs?
This is a real tragedy and will have a
massive impact on young people’s lives. I
understand the pressures behind this but
do not agree with the decisions made.
Any cuts made now will be paid for tenfold in the future. This is why I am keen
that the youth budget at Enfield is not cut
but indeed protected.
What do you do to improve the lives of
young people?
Firstly I try to understand what young
people are going through and can only do
that if I know what the issues are. I want to
@YouthEnfield / @4YPEnfield
What is your opinion on the current
unemployment issue with regards to
young people?
This is a real travesty. It’s so much harder
to get job. There are a lot more pressures
than previously and a lot more challenges
too. But we need young people to find
work or they may turn to something else
which can sometimes be negative. We
must ensure there are jobs for them in
the future and help them avoid heading
towards a very bad path.
young people on the Youth Parliament will
be offered the chance to take a lead role in
developing this with the Government.
What key message or piece of advice
would you like to give young people?
So many…I would really encourage young
people to get involved and make their
views count. Take an interest in what is
going on around you and find out who
does what. Only in this way can we be
held to account for our actions. Do work
hard and try to get the best education
you can. Finally you’re young so do enjoy
yourselves too.
AND FINALLY…we set a light-hearted
challenge...
Cllr Charalambous - Can you do
Gangnam style with us?
The result:
The AYF exists to ensure
that local issues of concern
to young people are heard,
discussed and acted upon.
They meet monthly and any
young person aged 11-19 (up
to 25 with learning difficulties or
disabilities) can attend to voice
their views and ideas.

more information.
Who are
Councillors?
Recently in the House of Commons
members of the UK Youth Parliament
voted on ‘a national curriculum for all’
as their national campaign. Would you
support this?
Yes 100%. It’s vital that young people are
educated about political systems, sex and
relationships, budgeting and so on but in a
way that is meaningful. I would hope that
Councillors are voted in by local
people to give them a voice
within the Council so that their
views can help improve services
for all the community.
This is what Cllr Charalambous had to say about the interview experience:
“I was very impressed by the quality of the questioning
and the follow up questions too. Certain questions made
me stop and think about a few things. I think we have
a few investigative journalists in the making there! The
interview was a very enjoyable experience and I hope
the young people interviewing got a positive experience
out of it too.”

Cabinet member has a special
responsibility for influencing
decisions relating to culture,
leisure, youth and local area
priorities.

There are three levels to complete starting with bronze, and should you wish

area on a turn up and play, no booking
necessary basis.
Girls and boys are welcome from ages 8-19,

I enjoyed taking part in this project as
it has given me an insight in to what
creating a magazine is really like as
we had to consider marketing and
advertising, which wasn’t as straight

This project was a challenging and
beneficial experience. I gained really
useful knowledge and expertise in
journalism and the production and
design process of magazines. I also

Jobsnet
The tips I gave her helped her make a
successful application and she was
invited for an interview. To help her
prepare for that we went through
a mock interview. I gave her
feedback on areas to improve
on and how to answer specific
questions. So I was over the
moon to hear that following
her interview she got the job”.
Enfield Jobsnet puts local people in touch
with local jobs and training opportunities.
Youth Jobs Broker Williamz Omope runs
work clubs at various locations across
Enfield including youth centres and
libraries. As Williamz explains:
“The Work Clubs are drop-in sessions
that give young people advice on CV’s,
interview techniques and application forms
and the chance to ask me questions. A
few months back I started to help a young
person who was attending Craig Park
Youth Centre in Edmonton. I helped her
update her CV and apply for jobs as well
as offering some coaching in interview
techniques. We agreed an action plan
putting in detail the steps she was going to
follow to get a job.
If you want help finding local
work or training opportunities
come along to one of the local
work clubs.
An ideal opportunity to put this into
practice came when we spotted a vacancy
at a new Sports Direct store in Edmonton.

You will have seen these ads dotted across London as part of the Teen

They emphasise the need for young

I started to feel depressed - like a bit of
a loser. I turned to Sort It! Compass for
help. They asked me to keep a diary of
my use. This made me realise how much
I was using, the amount I was spending
and who I was using drugs with.
To help me change my ways they helped
me to re-focus through exercise. My

“The young people I was hanging
around with all did drugs so it felt
normal to me. I started smoking
cannabis to help me relax but I was
soon smoking all the time. I could not
concentrate at college and used the
money for my education to buy drugs.
There are just too many things I want to

wasting it away because of drugs. Give
the guys at Sort it! a call, they made me

To give you an idea of what Summer
Uni is all about, in summer 2012 we
offered 94 free activities ranging from
2 hours to 2 weeks long and split into
seven key categories. This created
1,451 spaces for young people to fill
where they could participate in activities
covering: beauty and fashion; practical
and fun skills; digital media and
photography; business and careers;
hands on / make and create; music and
performing arts and sport.
Some of our courses are useful
additions to young people’s CV’s, while
others are purely for fun.
We will be delivering the Summer
Uni brochure at the start of July
to all secondary schools, libraries,
Youth Centres and many other easily
accessed places.
“As a sixth form student, I
cannot emphasise how useful,
skill enriching and downright
enjoyable these Summer Uni
courses are. For many, like
myself, whose families are
experiencing financial chaos,
who simply do not have the
money to go on holiday or to
enrol into clubs/societies, free
Summer Uni courses ensure
our summer holidays do not
entirely go to waste.”
Deniz - young person.
We will also have a link to an online
version of the brochure and if you would
like your email address placed on this
list, please email
[email protected] and we
will send you the link as soon as the
brochure is available.

Your Health
We all probably snack more than we
realise. It’s so easy to grab a chocolate bar
or a bag of crisps if we’re hungry, instead
of reaching for something healthier.
But snacks can be full of hidden nasties,
like saturated fat, salt and sugar. And
in time, too much of these can result in
people being overweight or developing
serious health problems.
Worryingly, 30% of children aged 2-19 to
be overweight or obese* (having excess
body fat which can lead to increased risks
to health).
Health experts agree to combat obesity
amongst children healthy eating habits
should be encouraged from an early
age. This is key for Enfield as checks in
2011/12 on children aged 4-5 and 10-11
showed the borough to have higher than
the London average rates for obesity**.
The Healthy Enfield web pages on the
NHS Enfield website provide information
and guidance on different health topics.
You can also find the monthly newsletters,
as well as data on the health of the local
population. There is information on local
services, and links to a variety of resources
including health-related YouTube videos.

Youth Enfield
Magazine –
tell us what you think?
So why not try the
following to get you
started?:
Thank you so much for taking the time to
read Youth Enfield.
• It’s the simplest tip in the book – be prepared,
try and get up a bit earlier and pack a healthy
lunch for school which should include some
fresh fruit too.
As this is the very first edition we would really
welcome your feedback.
Tell us what you like? Or perhaps did not
like? And let us know what else to include
and we can consider this for future editions.
• Instead of crisps or salted nuts, which can all be
high in salt and fat, try baked crisps, unsalted
mixed nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and
unsalted ricecakes, corncakes or oatcakes.
Any other comments about how we may
improve the magazine is respectfully
welcomed too.
• Aim for three regular meals a day. A meal
should keep you going for longer so don’t skip
these or you will be raiding the snack cupboard
for your fill.
Get in touch by emailing youthenfield@
enfield.gov.uk or by any of the other ways
detailed above.
• If you’re feeling peckish, try a glass of water
instead. Chances are you’re thirsty rather than
hungry.
We look forward to hearing from you.
So next time you get the munchies grab your
healthier alternative to sweets and snacks.
