Forty Hall Estate is a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion, open for
the public to enjoy, nestled in a Grade II listed Estate. The Hall
and Estate have recently been restored to magnificence with
funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund and Enfield Council.
A trip to the Hall is a memorable day out for the whole family – enjoy
admiring the finely restored rooms, learning about the history of
the Hall through the exhibition and exploring the gardens. Children
will love the wooded play area and meeting the animals at Forty
Hall Farm, which is open to visitors at the weekends. The Farm is also
home to a traditional orchard and London’s only commercial-scale
vineyard, and sells organic home grown veg from the Farm shop.
Forty Hall Estate offers
exciting events and
exhibitions the year round
– this summer enjoy the
’Livestock Music Festival’
(29th August) and a full
scale open-air production
of Shakespeare’s ‘ Twelfth
Night’ – to name but two
of the events on offer.
There is free parking near the main entrance, and then it’s just a short
walk or wheelchair ride to the Hall on accessible paths. Alternatively,
the nearest buses are the 191 and the W8.
There are free mobility scooters and free bike hire too – call at the Hall
for details, or to pre-book call 020 8363 8196.
Make the most of the day, bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds, relax
in the Nice Green Café for locally sourced food and pick up a gift from
The Cedar Gift Shop.

Message for Service Providers
Dear Service Providers
Thank you for contributing regularly to Breakaway, to help give families
more information about the short breaks on offer to them.
Families do love to see photographs of the children and young people
enjoying their short breaks, so we appreciate your help in ensuring
that we have these for Breakaway. Please do take photographs during
your short break sessions, so that we can include more of these within
the magazine (note that you must ensure that you have parent/
carer permission to do this).
Many thanks

We hope that you find this issue of
Breakaway helpful. Please let us
know if there is anything regarding
Enfield’s short breaks that you
would like to see in future editions,
as we would like the magazine to be
as useful as possible to families.

Special Educational Needs and Disability
SEND update
Sarah McLean, SEND Project Manager, updates families on the SEND reforms – read
on if you want to hear more about what Enfield is doing to support the changes.
We are starting to look at how we can improve
things based on what you have told us.
The Local Offer
You told us:
• it was too wordy
• there were not enough pictures, video clips,
etc.
• it was easy to find using the Google search
engine
• it was easy to navigate, but too many
mouse clicks were required
• it was not easy to find information about
leisure activities
• you were unable to find information about
public changing rooms with hoists in Enfield
Enfield’s Local Offer
We will address these areas, as we improve
our Local Offer web pages. The pages will be
re-launched in September 2015.
The current Local Offer has some very useful
information and links and can be found at
www.enfield.gov.uk/SEND
Young Person-Friendly Local Offer
and DVD
We are also developing a young person
version of our Local Offer. We are working
with a group of young people to produce a
DVD in which young people will be speaking
about their experience of the reforms and
what they think of our Local Offer. The most
exciting part of this work is that the young
people will receive a Duke of Edinburgh
Bronze Award.
A comprehensive guide to services for families
with children and young people aged 0 – 25 years
with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
For more information visit
www.enfield.gov.uk/SEND
Young people told us:
• Instead of saying ‘Short Breaks and Leisure Activities’,
we should say ‘Holiday and Free Time Activities’.
• Instead of saying ‘Consultation’ and ‘Publications’,
we should say ‘Finding out what people think’ and
‘information booklets’.
04 Summer 2015
Following on from their work on the Local Offer, we are
hoping that this group of young people will become our
‘SEND Champions’ who will work with us and help other
young people in Enfield to understand the reforms.
Activities in the
ECYPS Consortium
ECYPS, Dazu, Samafal,
Central African Youth in
Enfield (CAYE), West Lea
School, Tottenham Hotspur
Foundation and Niburu run
their activities on a consortium
basis, so we hope that at any
given time – between us – we
will be able to offer something
to meet the needs of a family.
However, we also want to try to offer
activities that are a little more unusual
and stretch many of our young people,
so during the autumn term of 2014, we
decided it would be a good idea to offer
both disabled young people and sibling
carers the opportunity to learn to drive.
ECYPS and Dazu organised two
trips to Brands Hatch, for young
people to take part in the Young Drive
programme. This is a safe way to
develop driving skills, as the tuition
takes place on the racing track, with
no traffic to contend with. The age
group of our young drivers was 11
to 17. All of our young drivers had a
fantastic time and were very keen to
take part in the second stage tuition.
The session consisted of tuition
followed by a practical session and an
assessment of skills. All of our young
drivers were excellent and received
very positive assessments.
In addition to our holiday programmes,
we have tried to arrange trips and
outings to meet all needs, tastes and
ages. This has included theatre trips to
see Matilda, The Lighthouse Keeper’s
Cat, West Side Story and Edward
Scissorhands, as well as trips out to the
Houses of Parliament, the London Eye,
Epping Forest and a residential in Surrey
– so it has been a very busy six months.
‘I Feel Good’ sessions
In addition to the above, we have also
run our regular ‘I Feel Good’ sessions
– designed to lift the spirits and build
self-esteem. These are particularly
beneficial for sibling carers. The
sessions offer the opportunity to take
part in boxercise or stretch classes,
have a make-over, a relaxing hand
massage or a facial, make a healthy
smoothie or get a henna design on
your arm. Our professional hairdresser
is also available for a free styling
session.
The young people attending tell us
that it is a really good way to catch
up with friends, and also to meet new
ones. It is a relaxed session, which
is young person-led in terms of the
activities offered. We always consult
with the users regarding their interests
and the development of the session.
The session is aimed at young
people aged 8-18, who have learning
difficulties, low self-esteem issues or
are young carers.
Dates: Sessions run monthly during
term-time; the last this term
will be Monday 20th July
Time:
5.30pm – 8.00pm
Venue: The Ark, 500 Montagu Road,
Edmonton, N9 0UR

Cheviots
short Breaks
Clare Redrupp, Cheviots Centre Worker Manager,
gives Breakaway an update on projects and
activities at Cheviots Disability Service…
It has been business as usual at Cheviots, with after school
groups, weekend groups and holiday play schemes all
welcoming new referrals.
We continue to organise ‘Bike Fundays’ at Waverley School
to give families the opportunity to try out our specialist
bikes. These are lots of fun, and are a fantastic resource
that we want to share with everyone. In the winter months
we replaced these days with the ‘Cheviots Cinema
Experience’, again at Waverley School. These were very
popular and gave families the opportunity to get out of the
house (despite the weather!), and watch a film in a relaxed,
friendly environment with staff to offer support.
In the Winter 2014/15 issue of Breakaway I talked about
an observation style questionnaire that the Centre Worker
team had been using to get meaningful feedback from
young people about their Cheviots’ short breaks. I am
pleased to report that 80 young people were consulted
as part of this project and 86% told us they were enjoying
their short break. We found that soft play and trips out were
the most popular activities, with parks being a favourite
destination for these outings.

Scope
Befriending
Services
Scope
We are pleased to have been in a position to support
an Enfield based family twice a week, with one
session being after school and a further session at the
weekend.
Staff observed that group activities encouraged children
to interact with their peers, and approximately 25% had
specific friends or friendship groups. In response to all
the feedback from young people we are looking at the
structure of our groups, and the needs of the young people
that attend. We have commissioned training in Intensive
Interaction for staff, and will be looking at organising more
swimming, cinema and seaside trips. This project has been
of huge value to us, and we look forward to making the
changes young people want.
Summer 2015
We are busy organising our summer playschemes,
which start on 27th July and run for five weeks. Parents,
please ensure that you choose your dates ASAP to avoid
disappointment! Following on from the success of last
year’s family activity days we will be organising these
again this summer. Activities will include arts and crafts,
bouncy castle, games, and specialist bikes. We hope lots
of you will be able to come and join us; why not bring a
picnic? Please watch out for flyers or contact Cheviots for
further information.

[email protected]
The sessions were tailored around activities the child
was interested in taking part in i.e. karate, swimming,
soft-play, adventure play, dance and drama – all of
which we researched in terms of venue, timings and
costing.
We are now in the process of taking on further
referrals from Enfield. At Scope, we respect that
disabled children and young people have interests
they wish to pursue and endeavour to fulfil this
through tailoring the service to fit around their
requirements and not the other way round.
Our one to one befriending service is for young
people aged 0 to 19 who need support in the local
community or at home. This might be to access
activities, to go to the shops, meet friends or simply
talk with someone.
Time:Every day
Cost: £15.09 per hour
Scope is flexible and will develop activities and
programmes to reflect your child’s wishes and
meet their individual needs. If you are interested
in using Scope’s Befriending Services, please

Youth & Families
Support Service
VIPS
VIPS (Very Important People
Services) is an organisation
that offers services to children
and young people aged 8 and
over, who have a disability.
We are based in Enfield.
We do offer transport if you wish
to purchase this as part of your
youngster’s package.
During holiday playscheme we offer
the usual activities like arts and
crafts, sports, cooking, games,
socialising, PlayStation 4, iPads,
Nintendo DSs, amongst others.
We focus a lot on independence
skills, which includes taking our
young people to the local shops
to purchase cooking items they
require for the session. They have
the opportunity to take part in
preparing and cooking their own
lunches; they have to wash up and
sort the recycling too!
Outings are enjoyed as well.
Amongst the favourites are bowling,
cinema, shopping, the park,
London trips and eating out. We
also work with the Enfield youth
centres, introducing our young
people gradually. Here they are
supported by staff known to them.
Our ethos at VIPS is to achieve
positive outcomes for all our
young people in a happy safe
environment, whilst having fun.
We don’t have to say goodbye to
our young people at 18. They can
continue with VIPS into adulthood
or can be supported through
transition onto another service.
08 Summer 2015
The Inclusion Project has just run two successful short breaks
offers to young people aged 13-25 years and who have Learning
Difficulties and Disabilities (LDD). The first offer ran during the
Easter break and the second ran during the May half term.
Both were well attended and received great feedback from the young people
and their families!
Summer Holiday Sessions
During the summer there will be a short breaks offer running during the first three
weeks of the summer holiday.
This offer will run to a planned programme of activities with the aim of developing
the young people’s life, social and independence skills.

This is something which we manage through life skills
(choosing lunch, shopping, buying, cooking and enjoying!),
art work, drama, trips out to places of interest (including the
zoo, swimming, farms, the cinema and museums).
We appreciate this may be too daunting for some children
so also have in-house fun which includes water play days,
