Firstly can I thank all of the school community for your support in the recent excellent production of “Enfield Entertains”. What an amazing effort from all participants. The End of Term BBQ and Blast Assembly was a great way to end the term and reinforce the positive achievements of the term. We welcome our Kindergarten 2015 students to their four session orientation program this week and look forward to them and their families joining our school community. Term four has many activities planned and if you check the school App or Web Site the calendar is a good way to make entries into your diary, and whilst we understand it is difficult to attend every event, it’s good to make a choice so you are not disappointed missing out on important events. Year six have a number of events planned as well in term four, this is a unique and wonderful opportunity for them to complete their primary school life with many positive experiences in their final term at Enfield. Cyber safety is an important concept for us to all come to terms with and it can often be a challenging process in our busy lives. The Australian government has developed an easy to navigate website with many helpful hints and strategies. I have included a number of tips in recent newsletters, and have done so again in this edition. I encourage you to go online and have a look at the information contained on the website. The address is cybersmart.gov.au As the summer months are upon us now is a great opportunity for children to improve their swimming and water safety skills. The Enfield Swimming Club is an economical and fun way to do this. Please see information later in the newsletter. If you wish to discuss anything with regard to your children’s schooling, please contact me to make an appointment. Enjoy the term and its activities! Until next time. Consider using parental controls such as filters to help manage your child’s online access. Make a special time whenever possible for reading with your child away from interruptions. Point out words on street signs, packets and labels Talk about the different purposes for reading a picture book, a novel, a TV guide, a newspaper, a telephone directory, a recipe book, an encyclopedia Point out the different size and shape of words. @ State Athletics carnival representative Congratulations to Zoe Ibrahim on progressing through to NSW state carnival level for Shot Put. Zoe threw 8.2 metres in the regional carnival and we wish her all the best when she competes against the best in the state at Homebush next Wednesday. App of the fortnight ABC Pocket Phonics PocketPhonics teaches kids letter sounds, first words and handwriting. It is used in over a thousand schools and pre-schools, and tens of thousands of homes worldwide. A certificate is emailed to you each time your child masters a set of letter sounds or can write a group of letters. Certificates are designed for printing and keeping, providing a record of achievement and a wonderful source of encouragement. Letter sounds are taught in small groups and a child is shown how to blend them to sound out words (e.g c-a-t is cat). PocketPhonics shows children how to write letters using an arrow they can follow with their finger or stylus. PocketPhonics supports two different writing styles, and for each style, kids can write in lowercase, uppercase and cursive. Parents & Citizens Group news The P&C will be voting at the next meeting on Wed 22nd October at 7.30 p.m.in the staff room to spend approximately $20,000 for the purchase of new furniture for upstairs “break out learning areas”. You need to be a paid member of the P&C to vote but anyone is more than welcome to attend the meeting if they wish to ask questions or see some sample photos of the furniture. PSSA Softball Softball week 9 In week 9 we played against Newington at Queen Elizabeth Oval. Well done to the senior boys on their wonderful 20-4 victory! The senior girls lost 16-2 and the junior girls lost 18-7. The junior boys had a very close match but lost 7-6. Better luck next week! Softball week 10 The junior teams practised in week 10 because Summer Hill didn't field any junior teams. In the Senior games, the boys won 10-7 and the girls lost 22-9. Well done on the improvements from everyone; the catching and fielding from all has certainly improved this year. Mr Wilson and Ms Scott The Cool Kids Adolescent Health program The CoolKids and Adolescent Health Program, is conducted at the Emotional Health Clinic within the Centre for Emotional Health (CEH) at Macquarie University. About 40% of children and adolescents may experience functional somatic health complaints, which are medically benign (that is, they have no identified organic cause). The most common somatic-health complaints experienced by children and adolescents include recurring abdominal pain, gastro-intestinal symptoms, recurring headaches, chest pains, dizziness and nausea. Research has shown that these children are prone to have increased rates of school absenteeism, and this may also have an impact on their learning, peer relations and overall quality of life. Studies have also indicated that up to 80% of children and adolescents struggling to cope with these recurring functional somatic health complaints may also be experiencing anxiety and/or depressive problems. Our new, CoolKids and Adolescent Health Program is designed to specifically help children learn how to concurrently cope and manage their somatic symptoms as well as learn stress management skills. This program is specifically designed for children aged 7 to 17 years who are experiencing recurring somatic health complaints for at least 3 months (and which a GP or medical specialist has confirmed that the symptoms are medically benign). The program is individually based and involves 10 x 1 hour weekly therapy sessions held at the Emotional Health Clinic at Macquarie University. Interested families will be invited to attend a screening assessment to determine eligibility. Organisation: Centre for Emotional Health, Macquarie University. Researchers: Associate Professor Maria Kangas, Prof Ron Rapee, & Prof Mike Jones. Who is eligible? Children and adolescents aged 7-17 years who are experiencing recurring somatic health complaints for a minimum of 3-months. Contact: For more information, please contact Assoc. Professor Kangas (email: [email protected]) or telephone (02) 9850 8599. Enfield Entertains Concert Congratulations and thanks to Ms Romera, Ms Sharpe and Mr Watkin for your efforts in coordinating and choreographing our biannual creative arts event, “Enfield Entertains”. The efforts by all teachers and children combined to make a memorable event. It sounded even better with our wonderful new sound system generously provided by the fund raising efforts of our P&C. The skills developed by students in preparing for an event where they have to collaborate with others, learn to keep in time with the music, follow directions and cues, not to mention the adrenalin rush of performing in front of a large crowd in costume under stage lights, helps build confidence and self-esteem. Thanks for your support in this event!
