South Baldwin Community Theatre hosts July 15-17 fest
2nd end of the road Festival celebrates 9 new short plays
First-run plays are rare on the Gulf Coast. But
the South Baldwin Community theatre is changing that by offering an entire weekend of new
short plays during the July 15-17 end of the
road new play Festival and Beach
party at the South Baldwin Community theater in Gulf Shores. the fest
will feature nine new plays by playwrights from all over the nation.
“we're very excited about this program. it's in its second year and was
very well received last year,” said
(pictured) laura pfizenmayer, director for the event.
this type of theatrical festival is
new to the Gulf Coast. the nine plays
were selected from over one hundred
submissions from across the country.
“the plays are diverse with six comedies and three dramatic works,’’ pfizenmayer
said. “each one represents a broad spectrum of
theater. we're excited.”
the festival format models other popular festivals such as the last Frontier theatre Conference and the Great plains theatre Conference.
“we have a wonderful theater here and an amazing facility. they are very supportive of new work
and that's wonderful,” pfizenmayer said. the
SBCt hopes this kind of event may inspire members of the community to get involved in the theater. winner of the 2015 people's Choice Award
was Gulf Shores resident Dave perry.
the plays are all 10 to 15-minutes
long and performed by local actors
with local directors. the performances are staged readings of the
plays with minimal props and stage
production – a kind of stripped down
theater approach. these kinds of performances have been well-received in
other markets because it allows for
the audience to meet and talk with
the writers before and after the show.
A beach party-style reception will be
held prior to each performance.
performances will be July 15 and 16
with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the performance at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17 the performance will be at 2 p.m., with a closing
reception and awards presentation to follow.

Young Gulf Shores triathlete takes top spot in Music City
7-year-old Jack Biggs is also a year round swimmer for GSSt
young Jack Biggs did his hometown proud during a recent competition in nashville, finishing first in his age group and 11th
overall at the First Annual Music City kid's triathlon on June
19 at triStar Centennial park. Although only seven, Jack swam
100 meters, biked 2.4 miles and ran a half a mile in a winning
age group time of 20:14. his time was
11th best overall, and all 10 finishers
ahead of Jack were 10-year olds.
Jack, who is homeschooling and entering 2nd grade, has competed in eight
triathlons altogether and has placed 1st
or 2nd in his last six. he swims year
round for the Brook hopkins coached
Gulf Shores Swim team and holds swimming records at the Bodenhamer Center
pool.
he lives for swimming and triathlon
competitions, but he also plays basketball
in the winter, according to his mother,
kristy Biggs.
“neither my husband nor i are swimmers or triathletes,’’ said kristy. “we had
no idea he would be a swimmer until we
moved down here and were in a pool almost daily. By age 3, we
could tell he loved swimming.’’
the Biggs moved to Gulf Shores from Chattanooga in 2011 when
Jack was two. Jack competed in his first triathlon, the phinman
at the Bodenhamer Center, when he was five.
“he loved it, but didn't place. last year, he started practicing
more and became more competitive,’’ kristy said. “he looks up to
Coach Brook, who is doing her first full ironMan in november.”
“Jack is a phenomenal competitor and an extremely hard
worker,’’ Coach hopkins said. “he has goals like no other 7-year
old i know. i am honored to get to have him in my swim group
and have my son (Cooper hopkins) along side him at practice and
the triathlons.’’
Coach hopkins competed in her first 70.3 ironman last April in
new orleans and completed a second 70.3 in May in panama
City. She just started a 20 week training plan leading up to her
first full 140.6 ironman on nov. 5 in panama City.
“i have competed in triathlons myself since the age of 11. it's an
amazing but tough sport,’’ she said.
“we will be going to see her and cheer her on,’’ kristy said.

it's a yearly tradition in the Blue Marlin

String said when the weather
gets hot in late June, July and
August, he takes advantage of
the time slot when most anglers
are not on the water.
“when it gets hot, i catch a lot
of fish between 10 and 2,” he
said. “i can deal with the heat

String has some more good
news. the flounder fishing,
which had suffered more than
the trout fishing, appears to be
on the rebound as well.
“on the beach, i know a lot of

started fishing for them, but i’m
planning to get some bull minnows and check the different
spots like the Grand hotel. i’ve

said it’s coming back. hopefully,
we’ll get a good run of flounder

haven’t had in a few years, either.”

what was wrong.
She said, "i had a dream that i

he said, "Sure, i don’t want to

She asked again, angry now,

“no, i guess not.”
Just then Father norton hit

into the hole. it was a 420 yard

St. peter looked at the lord
and asked, “why did you let

“who’s he going to tell?” replied
the lord.

the lawyer was stunned. not
knowing what else to do, he
pointed across the room and
asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know
the defense attorney?"
She again replied, "why yes, i
do. i've known Mr. Bradley
since he was a youngster, too.
he's lazy, bigoted, and he has a

the defense attorney nearly

the judge asked both counselors to approach the bench

Ole River String Band a Thursday night mainstay at The Point Restaurant
By Fran Thompson
As often occurs in the familiar
world that is our local musical
hotbed, the four member ole
river String Band started with
a back porch jam and a variation of the six degrees of separation concept.
robin kingry is a founding
member of Bubba & them, a
bluegrass outfit that has been
playing bluegrass on weekends
at the point restaurant for almost 30 years. nick Biebricher,
the owner of Sandy roots
Music productions, has a connection to the point through
the monthly songwriters series
he produces there. nick’s girlfriend is singer/songwriter
Christiana Christian. Justin
Fobes has been playing guitar
behind Christiana for a few
years. Justin started hanging
out with bassist Dave Calugar
of the Beachbilly’s soon after
moving here from Mobile. Dave
has been robin’s beau for eight
years.
or as Fobes put it: “we all sat
down to eat dinner and called it
a rehearsal.’’
kingry, a 20 year innerarity
resident, had already played
her four hour gig with Bubba &
them when she and Calugar invited Christian and guitarist
Chris McCune to jam on robin’s
back porch.
“there was a really cool chemistry right away,’’ robin said,
“especially the female vocals.
we sound like angels together.
we knew that we had to do
something with it. this group is
fairly new, but i am excited
about it.’’
“we were hanging out one
night and robin invited me and
nick to her house back around
the 1st of the year. we started
jamming and we all said ‘this
sounds pretty good,’’’ Christiana
added.
“everybody had their own little thing, but the sounds of us
all together was something
magical. it was pretty awesome,
and it came together quickly.’’
the ole river String Band
plays originals and covers
artists like Sarah evans, Fleetwood Mac, kasey Musgraves
and Miranda lambert during
what has become an ongoing
residency at innerarity’s the
point restaurant (850-4923577) every thursday from 6-10
p.m.
the band has discussed
branching out to other venues
on other nights, but the members all have separate projects
and ongoing gigs.
“My dance card is pretty full
with working a 9 to 5 job and
playing every weekend with
Bubba & them,’’ robin said.
“Dave plays every wednesday
with the Beachbilly’s. So our
time is limited.’’
Dave, who also plays locally
with J. hawkins, said the ole
river String Band fulfills his
wish to play in a band with his
girlfriend. “this band just felt
right when we got together,’’
said the nashville transplant.
“we sounded good right away.’’
Christiana is just a few years
removed from winning talent
shows at Foley high and advancing to the Star Search finals at the wharf.
After a year at troy, she came
home and went to work, playing
gigs solo and with others, and
writing songs. She plans to release her debut CD, Silent Sea,
early next year.
“i’m only in my fifth year of
playing live music out, but i
played in so many choirs growing up that harmony comes naturally to me,’’ Christiana said.
“when robin and i started
singing together, it flowed like
we came from the same time
era. it just worked.’’
“it is a huge part of what we
do,’’ robin added.
A native Mobilian, Justin has
been gigging professionally and
writing songs for 21 years. he
moved to perdido a few months
back to get closer to most of the
venue he plays.
“i have more work than i can
really do. i can play five nights
with five different people. i
can’t express how happy i am
about it (moving to perdido),’’ he
said.
Justin plans set up a home
studio to record his own songs
and produce others.
“Musically, we are all trying to
make a living and there are
only so many resources,’’ Justin
said. “But on any given night
when i’m on stage, two or three
musicians might walk through
the gate and it’s perfectly
within the realm of possibility
that they will sit in, and they
all know it.’’

Holly Shelton Band plays every Wednesday at Joe Gilchrist’s Malibu Lounge
popular chanteuse back on stage after loss of long time collaborator David Shelander
By Fran Thompson
holly Shelton was born to entertain, and, as
anybody who has seen her on stage can attest, she’s very good at it.
the daughter of musicians, holly was
groomed as a performer from an early age.
even as a child exposed to art, opera, musical
theatre, blues and dance in Memphis, she
knew she wanted to follow the spotlight.
“holly’s something over six feet tall, and
there isn’t a stage built that will contain her”
is how Bill Campbell of the northwest
Florida Daily news aptly put it.
Best known on pleasure island for her
many years of work with pianist David Shelander at the perdido Beach resort, holly
has played club and cabaret venues across
the country and has toured Morocco and the
Mediterranean with her colorful and versatile show.
But when Shelander died suddenly of a
heart attack in September of 2013, a little bit
of Shelton died with him. that happens when
you lose somebody you shared a stage with
for countless gigs for close to 30 years.
“David was a musical genius, and he had the
resume to back it up,’’ holly said. “we were
together for so many years that in a lot of
ways we were closer than family, and we
brought out the best in each other. it was all
so sudden.’’
Shelander played with Doc Severinsen and
the tonight Show orchestra and recorded
with the likes of eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, rick
Derringer, Stevie ray vaughn, Dickie Betts
and leo nocentelli of the Meters. he produced national commercials and worked on
records for the Gap Band, Air Supply and the
Captain & tennille. he wrote the treatment
for the last Ship (based on a book by his
stepfather), which is now one of the most popular shows on tnt.
“he would’ve been set financially for the rest
of his life just from the last Ship,’’ holly
said. “we had just played the past four nights
together at ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Destin when he died. it was just so sudden.’’
the loss of her dear
friend and musical
partner, as well as the
death of her father
and some medical issues of her own
around that same
time
gave
holly
pause.
Being on stage in
front of an audience
was no longer what
made her day.
Always a veteran’s
advocate (she founded
the pearl harbor initiative, a non-profit to
raise funds to transport remaining area veteran survivors back for the 70th anniversary
of the attack), holly devoted more time to
veteran affairs in honor of her father. She
went back to college, earning a masters degree in mental health counseling at uwF.
She was at the very least semi-retired from
the music business.
But when she heard from another musician
that Flora-Bama co-owner Joe Gilchrist was
opening the new Malibu lounge on old Gulf
Beach hwy, and that Joe wanted to emphasize (surprise, surprise) nightly music as a
draw, she decided to call her old friend and
talk. the result is a wednesday evening residency from 7-10 p.m. at the new Malibu
lounge (1000 Gulf Beach hwy. in p-cola).
“David and i would often stop in at the
Flora-Bama after work, and i’d jam with people there. plus, Joe and i had hooked up on
some veteran’s projects. he’s always been
such a huge advocate for the military,’’ holly
said. “i decided it was time to come out of my
cave and try to work again. So, i called Joe,
and he has been fantastic. he gave me everything i asked for. he told me he just wanted
me to be me.’’
the holly Shelton Band includes John link
on piano and saxophone, Jim Armstrong on
guitar and Jody Finx on percussion. that is
in addition to guest artists that show up on
most wednesdays.
“it’s been going on for about four months,’’
holly said. “there are good nights and bad
nights as far as crowds. But it is building and
we are seeing people coming back. i definitely
have a good band, and we do different stuff
depending on who’s there and what we are in
the mood for.
Also an actor during her eclectic career,
holly spent 10 years in los Angeles appearing in films that included Clint eastwood’s
“heartbreak ridge.” her favorite l.A. memories are working with eastwood, les McCann, and eddie harris and entertaining for
Dr. ruth, Claude Bolling and Morgan Freeman. All five of her well reviewed CDs are
available on her website (hollyshelton.com).
She is happy now to be back on stage helping Gilchrist make the Malibu as integral to
west pensacola community as the FloraBama has always been to perdido key.
“this is giving me a chance to have a last
act,’’ she said.

LOCAL ARTIST MAYA BLUME-CANTRELL EXHIBITS
AT
ROSE-
MARY BEACH GALLERY: Maya Blume-Cantrell, the resident artist at the
Coastal Arts Center at the Clay Studio in orange Beach, will be exhibiting at Curate, in collaboration with Justin Gaffrey, in rosemary Beach. Curate is a collaboration of many makers and artisans around the globe. Maya, a ceramics artist, has
always drawn her aquatic inspiration from the Gulf of Mexico and wolf Bay waters
that surrounded her as a child in her native orange Beach. the water and its abundant life forms, plant life and its unique anatomy have provided the basis for Maya’s
work. From a young age, she was encouraged to express her creativity and expand
her horizons. Maya discovered her affinity for form and shape as an architecture
major at Auburn. realizing she had found the sculptural aspects most intriguing,
she transferred her major to art. when her hands found clay, she knew she had
found her medium. Since graduating from the plains, she has continued to explore
the endless possibilities of clay, and has been a contributor to many art collectives,
galleries, workshops, and charities. “i'm excited to be able to show my work over in
the 30A area. i feel it is a good fit for my sculptural work because of the coastal influences of the pieces. it is a wonderful area in terms of their support and appreciation for the arts,” Maya said. “i will demonstrate, as well as show the pieces. this
allows people to better understand the process.the pieces i will be exhibiting are on
a larger scale - about two feet tall. it's always nice to build something big enough to

CHIEF DELMORE INVITED TO WHITE HOUSE
BRIEFING: Chief Edward Delmore of the Gulf Shores police
Department has been invited to the white house to participate
in a briefing about 21st Century policing. in December 2015,
president obama organized a task Force on 21st Century
policing. the task Force recommendations are organized
around six main topic areas or pillars: Building trust and legitimacy, policy and oversight, technology and Social Media,
Community policing and Crime reduction, officer training
and education, and officer Safety and wellness. Delmore will
join police executives from across the united States to hear
Erin Hudson;
Karen Parmer;
Edward Delmore
task force recommendations for helping to keep police officers
and neighborhoods safe. the Gulf Shores police Department
has been recognized for its efforts in Community policing, technology, and Social Media. officer Safety and wellness are also
priorities of the agency. last year GSpD was one of only two
Departments in the State of Alabama receiving federal grants
to hire additional officers allowing other veteran officers to be
utilized in Gulf Shores Schools. GSpD conducts a Citizen police Academy and youth Academy each year. the department
has an active ’”volunteers in police Service program” and a police explorer program.
Delmore is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors for
the Baldwin County Major Crimes unit. the unit was formed
in 2012 to provide shared resources and manpower during
homicide investigations but also to provide experienced, objective detectives to investigate officer involved shootings and incustody deaths.
Delmore believes those initiatives – all of which receive mention in the task force report - are the reason for his invitation
to washington. “we were among the first, if not the first, in the
united States to equip every patrol officer with a body worn
camera. we did that more than 6 years ago. we were also one
of the first three departments in the nation to implement the
community policing program “Coffee with a Cop.” he added,
“GSpD has embraced social media including Facebook and
twitter. we are one of few that periodically “tweet from the
Beat.”
while honored by the invitation, Delmore added he didn’t
agree with all of the task force recommendations. “there’s been
a vilification lately of American law enforcement officers and i
consider this administration to be partially responsible for
that.” one part of the report opines that officers should have a
“guardian” mindset as opposed to a “warrior” mindset.
“today’s law enforcement officer has to have both. My people
are expected to be guardians day in and day out and we obviously embrace community policing in a big way. But it is also
absolutely essential that they have the ability to shift immediately to a posture that will fight to save innocent lives. it may
not be politically correct, but we still have to maintain a tactical skill set.” he said.
