Message from Michael deMoet, Chief of Police MONTCLAIR POLICE DEPARTMENT TO LAUNCH TIPP In the future, the Montclair Police Department plans to launch the Trust in Policing Program (TIPP). The program is designed, in part, to open lines of communication with the public through community meetings, nonenforcement foot patrols and interactions, social media, and Spanish media outlets. grams, the Montclair Police Department intends to present several academies in the Spanish language, and in different formats depending on the audience. Graduates of the academies will take what they have learned to their families and friends, effectively delivering the Department’s message to a larger segment of the population. TIPP will reach out to religious organizations, schools, home and property owner associations, civic and city organizations, and other stakeholders to connect with the public, particularly the Spanish-speaking community. The Department’s goal is to bridge the communication gap with the public and increase transparency. TIPP will hold community meetings to build positive relationships and will present programs to the City’s youth at schools intended to provide guidance, build trust, and orient youth to the law enforcement profession. Citizen academies will be presented by the Trust in Policing Program in different formats to target teens and adults. The academies are intended to educate the public, to open the lines of communication, and to build trust between the community and the Department. Unlike traditional pro- Transparency will be achieved, and trust will be enhanced, as graduates gain a better understanding of the Department’s mission, goals, tactics, and policies and procedures. The Police Department plans to enhance its transparency through social media communication. Social media outlets reach nearly every subculture of the population. The availability of cell phone technology and social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Nixle can create powerful communication links between the Department and the community. Social media will be used to share information about Department events, community events, and crime-related information. The Department’s goal is to bridge the communication gap with the public and increase transparency. Each member of TIPP will be designated as a department Homeless Liaison Officer (HLO). As HLO’s, members of TIPP will reach out to the homeless community through nonenforcement patrols and through referrals from community groups. The Department intends to develop a strong partnership with the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership to coordinate the delivery of services and resources to those in need. This strategy is intended to develop relationships of mutual trust and respect and to reduce or end homelessness in the City of Montclair. For those persons who are unable to secure housing, or for those who wish to remain homeless, the Program will assist in improving their quality of life. FIRE DEPARTMENT SAFETY MESSAGE "Summertime Safety Tips" Fireworks Each Fourth of July, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer (Safe and Sane) fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, fires, and even death. The best way to enjoy fireworks is to visit a professional public display. All fireworks including Safe and Sane are illegal in Montclair and its sphere of influence. Grilling Safety Having family and friends over for a summertime barbeque should be a fun event. Increase the safety of your event by following these tips: • Keep a three-foot radius clear around your grill. • Designate this as a no-play zone for children or pets. • Propane and charcoal grills are for outdoor use only. If used inside, they could expose your family to toxic carbon monoxide, as well as pose a serious fire risk. • Do not wear loose fitting clothing while grilling. • Always use long handled grilling tools and never leave a lit grill unattended. Preventing Heat Related Illnesses PROPER USE OF 9-1-1 In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1 for assistance. An emergency is considered an event or occurrence demanding immediate action, or any condition endangering life or property. For example, you may call 9-1-1 if you smell smoke; see a fire; witness or are involved in a serious vehicle accident; or if there is a serious medical emergency or potentially dangerous situation. Unfortunately, there are many instances where 9-1-1 has been dialed as a joke or a nuisance call. Dialing 9-1-1 is serious and calling unnecessarily may endanger someone else’s life or property! When dialing 9-1-1, give the dispatcher the following information: the phone number you are calling from, your name, your location, and the nature of the problem. Remain on the line until the dispatcher tells you it is okay to hang up. 22 While heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, annually many people are affected by extreme heat. As temperatures start to rise this summer, follow these tips to increase your safety: • Drink plenty of fluids. • Wear loose-fitting clothing and sunglasses. • Reduce your exposure to the sun. • Do not leave people or animals in parked vehicles. • Use cool compresses, misting, showers, and baths. • Check on those at risk, especially children, seniors, or those who are ill. Swimming Pool Safety No matter how a child drowns, one thing is the same for all parents: the tragic seconds that claimed their child’s life slid by silently, without warning, and can never be brought back. Prevent children from drowning by providing adult supervision at all times and having a safety barrier that surrounds a pool or spa. A few things you can do to prepare for pool emergencies are: • Take a CPR class, • Learn rescue techniques, • Keep a phone near the pool area, and • Teach children good pool/spa habits. For more information on the topics listed above, please contact the Montclair Fire Department at (909) 447-3540. Fireworks on Fourth of July are an American past-time, but did you know that there are more than twice as many fires reported on that day, than on any other day of the year in the United States? Two out of every five of these fires are caused by fireworks. The good news is that you can enjoy your holiday and the fireworks with just a few simple safety tips: Leave fireworks to the ✓ professionals. Do not use consumer (Safe & Sane) fireworks. The safest way to enjoy ✓ fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals. FACTS •Each 4th of July, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using Safe & Sane fireworks. •The risk of fireworks injuries is highest for children ages 5-14. •More than 80% of emergency room fireworks injuries involve the use of Safe & Sane fireworks.
