would expect of a tropical island. The rich marine life makes
the island ideal for water sports. For shoppers, there is a wide
range of perfumes, cosmetics,
electrical and electronic goods as well as bags, shoes, textiles
and ready-to-wear fashions at duty free prices.
Borneo is the third largest island in the world (after Greenland
& New Guinea) and consists of 3 different countries – Malaysia
(Sabah, Sarawak & Labuan), Indonesia (Kalimantan) and the
Sultanate of Brunei. The island is bounded on the east by the
Sulu and Celebes Sea, on the west and north by the South
China Sea and on the south by the Java Sea.
BRUNEI
Brunei, an oil-rich Sultanate on the north western coast of
Borneo, is known for its huge reserves of oil and gas and for
having one of the oldest monarchial systems in the world. It
offers a wide variety of interesting places to visit including
magnificent mosques, the large state-of-the-art theme park
Jerudong Park and the famous Kampung Ayer Water Village,
said to be the largest water village in the world.
SABAH
The “Land Below The Wind” offers astonishing variety. From
white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and beautiful coral
islands (some of which are the world’s top diving locations),
to pristine rainforests and wildlife, up to the granite summit
of Mount Kinabalu (4095m), South East Asia’s highest
mountain, Sabah is truly amazing! Despite its unique
attractions and well-developed tourism infrastructure, Sabah
has only recently become known to discerning travelers. For
most Australians, Sabah is a totally new holiday destination.
Without a doubt, Sabah has much to offer. Visitors can watch
orang utans in a rainforest sanctuary, see giant sea turtles
come ashore to lay eggs, go white water rafting, snorkel or
scuba dive over reefs, explore a cave where edible bird’s nests
have been gathered for centuries, travel by boat through
Malaysia’s largest wetlands area to view Borneo’s unique
proboscis monkey – all this within a couple of hours or less
of an airport and luxurious accommodation.
Our choice of hotels, resorts and tours are carefully planned
and well researched by our team of travel professionals who
have extensive experience and local knowledge of Sabah
and the Borneo region.
Our package holidays represent excellent value for money.
In addition to arranging package holidays we can arrange

BORNEO’S NATURAL & CULTURAL WONDERS
Political Divisions
The southern two-thirds of Borneo is
controlled by Indonesia, and the northern
third by Malaysia and Brunei. The Malaysian
portion is divided between the states of Sabah
and Sarawak, and the Federal Territory of
Labuan. The tiny oil-rich kingdom of Brunei is
wedged between Sabah and Sarawak.
Climate
Borneo sits astride the equator and therefore
experiences a tropical equatorial climate.
Temperatures rarely rise above 32 degrees
celsius and along the coastal areas rarely drop
below 20 degrees at night. Naturally, cooler
temperatures are experienced in highland
areas. Relative humidity is consistently around
85-95%. Rainfall is common throughout
the year and varies from 1500-2500 mm
(60-80 inches). In most of Malaysian Borneo
and Brunei the wetter period occurs during
the North East Monsoon from October to
February and the drier season from March
to September. Borneo is fortunate in that it
lies below the devastating East Asia typhoon
zone and because of this the Malaysian State
of Sabah, has become known as the “Land
Below the Wind”.
Parks. Kinabalu National Park in Sabah
and Mulu National Park in Sarawak, were
both declared World Heritage Sites in the
year 2000, in recognition of their amazing
biological diversity and their role in preserving
the ecological systems within the parks.
Trekking through the tropical rainforest
of Borneo’s National Parks is a truly awe
inspiring experience.
Mountains
The mountain ranges of Borneo are highest
in Sabah and gradually taper out to steep
and undulating hills in Brunei and Sarawak.
Mount Kinabalu, at 4095 metres, is the
highest mountain in South East Asia and
is the most accessible. It is not a very
difficult mountain to climb, but you have to
be reasonably fit to make the summit. The
limestone outcrops in many parts of Borneo
offer even more challenging climbing options.
The most impressive of these is the limestone
Pinnacles in the Mulu National Park in
Sarawak.
The Deer Cave
paintings, have been found in caves located
within the Niah National Park in Sarawak.
Flora and Fauna
Borneo’s tropical rainforests are among the
oldest in the world and many of the rainforest
species of flora and fauna are only to be
found in Borneo. Only here can you see wild
populations of the long-nosed proboscis
monkey, the Borneo gibbon, the macaques
and leaf monkeys. Another rare species (found
in the wild only in Borneo and Sumatra) is
the orang utan or “man of the forest”. There
are more species of plants in Borneo than on
the whole African continent. The magnificent

The short swift flowing rivers of Malaysian
Borneo, once the bane of travellers, have now
become centres for white water rafting and
kayaking. The Padas River in Sabah has now
become Borneo’s premier white water rafting
destination.
Caves
Mulu National Park is the adventure and
sightseeing caving capital of Borneo. With the
world’s largest cave passage and largest cave
chamber, it is not surprising that Mulu is now
world famous. The oldest human remains to
be found in South East Asia and ancient cave

Approximately, 16 million people live
on the island of Borneo. About 2 million
live in Sabah, another 2 million live in
Sarawak, 300,000 in Brunei and the rest
in Kalimantan. The island’s population is
very low compared to most other parts of
South East Asia. Most of the population is
concentrated in coastal regions. The most
populous native ethnic group in Sarawak
is the Iban, in Sabah, the Kadazandusan
and in Brunei, the Brunei Malay. There are
numerous smaller native ethnic groups each
with their own unique traditional way of life,
customs and culture. Centuries old trade
ties with China account for the large Chinese
populations in many of Borneo’s coastal
towns.
SABAH’S TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Mt Kinabalu
Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centres
The world’s largest orang utan rehabilitation
centre is located on the outskirts of
Sandakan. More than 4,500 acres of virgin
rainforest have been set aside here as a forest
reserve and rehabilitation centre for orang
utans, which have been rescued from captivity
or abandoned by their mothers. Watching
these charming and entertaining mammals
during feeding time is a truly unforgettable
experience. A similar, but smaller Orang
Utan Rehabilitation Centre, is located at
Semonggoh on the outskirts of Kuching – the
capital city of Sarawak.
Mount Kinabalu National Park
(World Heritage Listed)
The Park covers an area of 754 sq km and
includes the highest mountain in South East
Asia. Thousands of people visit the Park
every year to climb Mount Kinabalu (4095
metres), to walk the nature trails in the Park
Headquarters area, to swim in the therapeutic
open-air baths of the Poring Hot Springs,
or take the Canopy Walkway through the
magnificent rainforest of the Poring area.
Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary &
Gomantong Caves
The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, located
in north-eastern Sabah, is the largest forest
covered alluvial floodplain in Sabah. Various
species of wildlife are to be found here,
although the animal most closely associated
with the area is the rather strange looking
proboscis monkey. Historical sites found in
the floodplain are the Gomantong Caves,
where the harvesting of bird’s nest began
centuries ago. Considered a delicacy, these
swifts’ nests fetch a handsome price and men
are willing to risk their lives climbing on tall
bamboo poles to retrieve them.
Turtle Islands National Park
Orang Utan
This park consists of three small islands,
located in the Sulu Sea about 40 km
northwest of Sandakan. The park was named
Rainforest
Snorkelling

Turtle
for the thousands of green and hawksbill
turtles that swim ashore to nest on these
islands. Selingan Island (the main tourist
island), is the principal nesting area for green
turtles which come ashore, normally at night,
Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park
This unique park comprising five idyllic
islands (Manukan, Mamutik, Sapi, Sulug and
Gaya) is only 20 minutes from Kota Kinabalu
by speedboat. It is home to a variety of flora
and fauna, and with stretches of white sandy
beaches, crystal clear waters and diverse
coral reefs, these islands are the ideal spot
for beginner divers as well as snorkeling and
picnicking.
SABAH’S TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Tamu
Rafflesia Forest Reserve
This area, located not far from Kota Kinabalu
in the northern section of the Crocker Range
National Park, has the largest concentration
of the giant rafflesia flower – the world’s
largest flowering plant. There is no particular
flowering season for rafflesia. The flowers
can appear at any time during the year and
sightings therefore cannot be guaranteed.
Kota Belud Sunday Market
The small village of Kota Belud (located 2
hours drive from Kota Kinabalu) is the home
of a traditional Sunday open-air market or
“Tamu”. This market features mainly local
handicrafts and local produce brought in
by villagers from the surrounding district.
Occasionally, several water buffaloes are lined
up for auction to the highest bidder.
Kudat
The Kudat Peninsula lies on the northern tip
of Sabah and is the home of the Rungus tribe.
The Rungus still maintain a strong traditional
lifestyle where many families continue to live
in longhouses and observe age-old customs.
to lay eggs before returning to the sea.
Sabah Tea Plantation
Nestled into the lush tropical wilderness of
Malaysia’s first ever World Heritage Site,
Mount Kinabalu, sits on a 6,200-acre land at
2,272 feet above sea level. It is surrounded
by the world’s oldest rainforest of about 130
million years.
Sabah Tea Plantation is the largest single
commercial tea plantation in Borneo with
approximated area of 1,000 acres endowed
with an interesting plant and agriculture
resources, Camellia Sinensis. It is also one of
the very few tea plantations in the world that
certified to produce organic tea and is known
to produce the finest grades of tea.
Tea leaf harvesting
Tenom Agricultural Park and
Gardens
Tenom Agricultural Park and Gardens is
an expansive complex highlighting native
and introduced species of plants that are
of agricultural and ornamental value. Of
significant interest are the native Borneo
orchid collection, the living crop garden
and ornamental gardens. Tenom is easily
accessible by road from Kota Kinabalu,
although visitors can travel there by train on
the historical North Borneo Railway.

SARAWAK, LABUAN & BRUNEI’S TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Mulu Caves National Park
(World Heritage Listed)
These 30 million year old caves contain the
world’s largest cave passage (Deer Cave) and
largest natural chamber (Sarawak Chamber),
as well as many other exciting caves for
adventure caving and sightseeing. The Wind
Cave is famous for the beautiful formations of
the King’s Chamber.
Historic Kuching
Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, is the only large
city in Malaysian Borneo to have escaped the
devastating bombing of World War 11. A visit to
Kuching is like taking “a journey back in time”.
Kuching has Borneo’s best-preserved 19th
century buildings, constructed during the rule
of Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah of
Sarawak. Row upon row of 19th century Chinese
shophouses are a major feature of the downtown
area. The newly landscaped Kuching Waterfront
provides a focal point for visitors and locals alike
- especially at night when the historic buildings
across the river are spectacularly floodlit.
Sarawak Cultural Village
The Sarawak Cultural Village (located 40
minutes drive from Kuching), is possibly the
finest “living museum” in South East Asia.
Seven traditional houses are scattered over
a beautiful 17 acre site at the foot of Mount
Santubong. The village is staffed by people
from Sarawak’s major ethnic groups, who
perform typical daily activities and spectacular
multi-cultural dance performances, to give
visitors the perfect introduction to Sarawak
and the way of life of its people.
Blowpipe shooting
Gunung Gading National Park
Gunung Gading National Park, a 2 hour drive
from Kuching, is Sarawak’s main conservation
area for the rafflesia, the world’s largest flower,
which can grow up to one metre in diameter.
The park also offers a number of attractive
walking trails, leading through primary rainforest
to beautiful jungle waterfalls.
The duty free status of the island of Labuan
makes it ideal for shopping. Labuan is also
a place of major historical importance. The
War Cemetery is the resting place of the many
allied servicemen who died in Borneo during
World War 2.
Brunei City
Brunei’s capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan
has some of South East Asia’s most beautiful
buildings, built with money from the country’s
rich oil reserves. These include the magnificent
Sultan Omar Saifuddin Mosque, the Royal
Regalia Exhibition Hall and the Royal Palace.
(The mosque is closed every Thursdays and
Fridays.)
Bako National Park
Located only 37 km from Kuching, the Bako
National Park is one of the best places in
Borneo for wildlife experiences. With its
rainforest, abundant wildlife, interesting
plants, secluded beaches and trekking trails,
Bako National Park offers visitors an excellent
introduction to the rainforests of Borneo.
Moreover, the park has been protected since
1957, so the animals are less wary of humans
than in other parts of Borneo.
Labuan
Brunei Water Village
Brunei has Borneo’s largest water village,
which is home to some 30,000 people. The
village, which early Europeans named the
“Venice of the East”, is a living museum of
a lifestyle that goes back hundreds of years.
The best way to experience this amazing
village is to take a boat ride along the historic
Brunei River.
