Shauna completed her Commercial Floristry
Certificates in Queensland but then extended
this knowledge further at the Lyon Formafleur
International Design School in France. She has
worked with a number of International Designers both in Australia and overseas
and her competition experience is extensive.
Awards include Interflora Australia Florist of the Year in 1997, 2001, and 2006
along with several Queensland Florist of the Year awards. Becoming runner up
in the 2008 Interflora Asia Cup Selection Trials and a finalist at the 2009 World
Cup selection trials testifies that Shauna’s work has reached a high international
standard.
She has given us a unique interpretation of the fifties along with a dreamy
woodland series that conjures up fairies and magic potions. All Shauna’s work
has been photographed beautifully by Rhinda Larsen while WAFEX has provided
many of the quality blooms. Please check their advertisement for distribution
outlets in four states.
See the latest winners of the Designz® Cup on pages 10-13 where this year’s
theme brings many well-known characters to life.
Happy reading!

Slide into Shauna Larsen’s
seductive slipstream
of sweetness on the
following pages.
She demonstrates many possibilities with the
new OASIS® Cupcakes in their spotted skirts of
pastel pink, lilac or mint. The same background
colours also come with sporty stripes or
nostalgic floral patterns so take your pick from
two different sizes. The elegant stand is also
available in two sizes.
Shauna included flowers from the WAFEX
Sovereign range when she transformed the
fifties into a fairy floss fantasy so
watch out for them.

How to make:
Step 1 Bevel the edges of the floral foam inside a large
cupcake holder. Create this design by using small left over
items from other designs.
Step 2 Begin by inserting clusters of Gypsophila into foam.
This is followed by grouped clusters of Chrysanthemums,
Stocks, Roses and Sim Carnations.
Step 3 Embellish the cupcake by using Pearls on Reel
scrunched into balls and attached with wire. Insert Diamante
Sprays then wind a twist of Aluminium wire attractively
through the design to circle and frame the cupcake.

Razzle Dazzle
Wristlet
Start this design by coating 30g wire with white Parafilm.
Cut it into two 10cm lengths and thread through a Rock Candy
bracelet to create secure tie points. Wire up small sprays of
Gypsophila and Spray Roses then coat with more Parafilm.
Create a round spray of Rose buds and also bind with white
Parafilm before embellishing with the wired Gypsophila.
Add in wired Hypericum berries then Diamantes before using
the threaded wire on the bracelet to attach the spray. Twist
wire securely and tuck in ends.

Bling
Begin this buttonhole design by creating a tatami using five lengths of flat
Aluminium wire then tying them together with 15cm lengths of silver Bullion wire.
Use pliers to bend the ends into tight concentric twists ensuring they are of
varying lengths. Glue a base leaf of Dusty Miller to the top side of the platform
before gluing Rose buds, Spray Roses, Sim Carnation petals and Hypericum
into a small attractive spray.
Embellish with some Diamantes then glue an Ivy leaf to the underside. Finally
use extra glue to attach a Corsage magnet.

Feminine
Is there a bride in there?
The fifties followed years of wartime
austerity. Men returned to the factories
where women had filled an economic gap
and feminine fashion was back. Full skirts,
clinched waists and an apron for forays to
the kitchen became the signature style.
Shauna’s bridal bouquet oozes extravagance
and optimism as it heads into the future.
How to make:
Step 1 Create a chicken wire style mesh frame
from silver Aluminium wire then bend the frame
into a rounded teardrop shape. Ensure that the
cut ends are bent around securely.
Step 2 Cut lengths of the same wire and
combine them to form a bouquet handle.
Weave a base out of silver Bullion wire to
create a platform then attach to frame securely.
Step 3 Weave green Pearls on Reel
throughout the frame distributing them
evenly. Twist up the ends of the handle base
with pliers to make pretty curls.
Step 4 Cut pieces of Statice then wire them
onto lengths of Bullion wire and thread over
the frame. Repeat this process by wiring and
threading pieces of Gypsophila, white Orchids
then Hypericum to build up the design. Finish
by wiring and threading Sim Carnation petals
onto the frame.
Once the desired length and volume is
achieved glue on pinches of Stocks and
Diamantes Sprays. Complete the design by
gluing and pinning three perfectly placed
Phalaenopsis blooms.

Right: The vibrancy and colour of Judy
Garland’s life contrasted with her dark side.
Amy Backhouse captured this beautifully.
Far right: A down to earth Aussie named Peter Brock
was the inspiration for Lauren McCallum.
“The more I researched him, the more it seemed to fit
together - Australian and South African Natives and his
memorial Red Tea Rose. My wonderful husband came
up with the logistical elements: sourcing the tyre and
basing it onto the pole.”
Lauren deliberately chose an open form design
using moss to accentuate the aesthetics of
the Natives and Roses within the tyre.

Designz® Cup 2013 QUEENSLAND
A slice of Hawaii made it to Brisbane for
the Designz® Cup.
Andy Irons was the inspiration for a design that was
awarded first prize by Alan Randell-Smith and all
placegetters appear below:

Elloise Hight paid tribute to a man
who stayed true to himself and the
surfing culture. He was also a strong
ambassador for the importance of
surf awareness in youth.
“I love the purity and beauty of the
beach. Surfers find solace as well as
enjoyment when surfing the waves
and I wanted to share this with
people,” said Elloise.
She used contrasting colour to
make the flowers stand out from
the natural beach setting. They
also connected with the photo
of a tribute to this brilliant surfer
who learned his craft on the
dangerous reefs of Kauai, Hawaii.
In response to Irons’ death a World
Championship Tour event in Puerto
Rico was postponed for two days
with competitors holding a “paddle
out” memorial service.
Flowing lines and different levels
balanced this design which was kept secure
in an OASIS® Florette Grande. Delphiniums
caught the blueness of the ocean that Andy
loved so much while Roses radiated the gold
and red edges of a Hawaiian sunset. Lush
foliage, perfectly poised Palm fronds, shells
and a surfboard are all symbols of this famous
man’s connection to the Island of Love.
“I love being creative with designs and being
able to work with nature’s most beautiful
flowers and plants. Knowing that someone is
getting joy out of something I have created for
them makes me fall more in love with the art of
Floristry every time,” said Elloise.
11
Left: Sahar Isaac loved the music, talent and creativity of Michael
Jackson. A glove and hat were woven from Bullion Wire to create his
signature pieces.
Calla Lilies combined with Dendrobium Orchids, Anthuriums and
Roses for a stunning contrast to the black wiring above. “Flowers
are part of my life now and I love living every minute of it. I am
passionate about seeing people happy, changing their moods and
putting a smile on their faces,” said Sahar.
Below: Heath Ledger’s joker in Dark Knight triggered the
imagination of Maria Anogianakis. His early death inspires her to find
joy in every second of every day.
Stub Wire became a head while the tatami technique kept materials
secure. Maria made her own chicken wire while OASIS® Floral Foam
and Test Tubes were filled with Anthuriums and Orchids. “What I
enjoy mostly about floristry is that I get to play with flowers which
are a passion of mine.”

Designz® Cup 2013 NEW SOUTH WALES
Several celebrities were spotted at the Royal
Easter Show in Sydney.
They entertained the public in unexpected floral designs during
the New South Wales Designz® Cup. Alan Randell-Smith and
David Berger reached the following results:
1st Prize Fionna Tamin Canberra Institute of Technology
2nd Prize Sahar Isaac South Western Sydney Institute –
Padstow College
3rd Prize Maria Anogianakis Sydney Institute Ultimo College
Highly Commended Michael Cordeiro
Sydney Institute - Ultimo College
Fionna Tamin deliberately picked Van
Gogh for her tribute instead of a musician
or actor. She used the famous artist’s
painting entitled Starry Night as a brilliant
connection to this year’s theme.
Van Gogh’s life was filled with tragedy.
“He was despised, misunderstood and
never really enjoyed a single taste of
fame or glory. Van Gogh conveyed beauty
through his paintings so selflessly that it
touched the world deeply and this is very
inspiring to me.”
“The highlight of my piece was Van Gogh’s swirl
of stars. I tried to stick to the painting as much
as possible and shaped transparent irrigation tube
into swirls that were wired together using the tatami
technique,” said Fionna. She developed her idea further
with more wire work throughout.
“I love the soft Aluminium Wire. It’s so easy to
manipulate that creating my swirl highlights
was an absolute breeze.”
Golden shades of Asiatic Lily along
with Vanda and Dancing Lady Orchids
depicted the glow of the moon in Starry
Night. The colours of the sky were visible
in trails of Delphinium, dyed Dendrobium
Orchids and Irises. Several people have
inspired Fionna and especially Andy
Djati Utomo whose works push
the boundaries of floristry while
embracing simplicity at the same
time.
“I love floristry because it is an art form
that combines nature’s beauty with my
perception of beauty. I don’t think I
will ever be bored by nature,”
said Fionna.

Fairies, goblins and spells emerge from the
forest at night.
Shauna Larsen has woven all these threads together to create
a dreamy tapestry of trees and darkness around this sequence
of wedding designs. Dodda Vine creates a boundary for
something that could have worked at a medieval feast with
candles illuminating every delicious detail.
It’s magical.
