2013 - Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science
5th Annual TCBES Symposium May 13th‐15th, 2013 A very special thanks to Jamie Gilmore for original cover art and Jodie Schulten for referring the artist 5th Annual Event Coordinators Donald Price, Stephanie Vandruff, Ann Tanimoto, Scarlett Kettwich, Lynx Gallagher, Tani Wright, Eva Brill, Hoang‐Yen Nguyen, and many volunteers! Tropical Conservation Biology & Environmental Science Research Symposium May 13th‐15th 2013 Mahalo to our silent auction donors! Keynote Speaker Rodolfo Dirzo We are pleased to welcome Rodolfo Dirzo as our TCBES student selected keynote speaker! Rodolfo Dirzo studied Biology at the University of Morelos, México. He completed his Masters (M.Sc.) and Doctorate (Ph.D) in Ecology at the University of Wales, Great Britain. He has been a Professor at UNAM, where he was researcher and chair of the Evolutionary Ecology Department, and Director of the Los Tuxtlas Research Station. Currently he is a Professor at Stanford University in the Biology Department, Fellow of the Woods Institute for the Environment, and the Director of Stanford’s Center for Latin American Studies. His scientific work centers on the study of the ecological and evolutionary relationships between plants and animals and on the impact of human activities on natural ecosystems. His recent work includes a documentation of the global magnitude of biodiversity loss, and how the loss of wildlife affects plant communities, ecosystem processes, and how this may lead to increased risks of human disease. Most of his work is carried out in tropical ecosystems of Latin America, mostly in Mexico, and most recently in Africa. His publication record includes 115 peer‐ reviewed articles and 58 book chapters. He has written or edited 15 volumes. He is actively involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels both in the USA and Latin America. As a mentor, he has been the major advisor of 30 undergraduate students, 10 Masters and 20 PhDs – all of whom completed a thesis in his lab. In addition, he is committed to science education among children and the general public. He runs a science education program for kids from under‐represented communities in Northern California. He participated in the newly released “Framework for K‐12 Science Education in the US” commissioned by the US National Academies. 1 KTA Café 100 Captain Zodiac Volcano Winery Body Glove Cruises New Star Restaurant Big Island Candies Sea‐Jay's Healing Massage Hilton Waikoloa Balancing Monkey Yoga UFO Parasail Maui Divers of Hawaii Hawaiian Arts Laundry Express Sig Zane Designs McDonalds Jamie Gilmore Ocean Rider Corinna Pinzari Paul’s Place Café Dr. Rebecca Ostertag South Seas Tattoo Hoang‐Yen Nguyen Blue Hawaiian Helicopters Ann Tanimoto Dr. Lorna Tsutsumi Christy Short Kui & I Florist Emery Garcia Alizon Atkins Janis Iyo Mark Kimura Timo Sullivan – Sullivan Kona Coffee Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii Dr. William Sakai 10 Monday, May 13th Wednesday, May 15th Session 7: Physiology and Genetics 10:30 Karma Kissinger, UHH Graduate Student Use of Marine Microalgae Meals Containing High Levels of Omega‐3 Fatty Acids to Partially Replace Fishmeal and Fish Oil in Diets for Carnivorous Marine Fish 10:45 Stephanie Vandruff, UHH Graduate Student Employing next generation ion torrent technology to elucidate the variation in fungal soil community structure across substrate age and elevation gradients in native forests on Hawai’i Island 11:00 Adam Daw, UHH Graduate Student Phylogenetics and morphometrics of two undescribed Hawaiian octopus species.
