Memo from the President:
Dang, I hate this time of year. I mope around the house complaining I’m bored because there just isn’t any racing
going on. This time between the Rolex 24 Hour race and the Daytona 500 is hard enough but then there is another
gap between Daytona and Sebring which is about the same time as the first F1 race in Melbourne. And of course
right after those races, we have our first driver’s school on March 23 and 24. And then there’s the Bremerton play
day on March 31 (my Formula Ford buddies in Seattle say I can try their formula cars that day!). And somewhere
along in March World Rally starts up again. Well, after listing out those upcoming events- which really aren’t that
far away now I think about it- I am starting to feel better. I’m glad we had this little chat.
Now to the Cascade business at hand. First, a huge shout out to Mike Tripp who announced his resignation from the
Board at our last meeting. He really is going to move to Whidbey Island I guess and we really are going to miss his
large presence in our club. Thanks again Mike, for all you have contributed to the success of Cascade!
We had a great turnout at Parker Johnstone’s Honda for the annual Instructor’s School followed by an equally great
track walk around PIR lead by Gary Bockman. The only tough part about the walk was tiptoeing through the acres
of goose poop splattered all over the track in my new Pilotis. (I love to tell first timers at PIR that may have heard
the term “green track” referring to one whose rubber has been all washed off, but we mean literally green from
goose slime at our track!)And I hate to admit this but I learned from Gary that I have been losing half a second per
lap because I was incorrectly getting through turns 10, 11 and 12. Watch out Group 2, I’m coming through! And
with even more grip from the new Hoosiers we Miata racers get to use this year.
As we head into the new season, we will be well armed with some very snazzy two-sided business cards that
promote the Club and our rally and race events. Doug and Maxine are busy printing them for us and I hope you will
have seen them at our next general meeting before you even read this. The cards are for members to use to with
their friends and family and attract new enthusiasts. And to that end, we also have an upcoming worker orientation
session in concert with our first school in March. Look for information on that event and come join us.
If you haven’t put your racing house in order yet before the 2012 season starts, don’t forget that many of your
fellow members offer services and products that will make that job easier. Their advertisements are in this issue of
the Auspuff so they shouldn’t be hard to identify. And if you have a business, racing related or not, one of the
benefits of Club membership is a free business card sized ad in this newsletter. Take advantage of it.
Until I see you at our next event, drive on! And remember, “La macchina va, dove vanno gli occhi.” The car goes
where the eyes go! (Especially through turn 10. Whoopee!)

Race Tracks Live
February 13, 2012
SAGERA, LLC and PIRLIVE have joined forces to bring you Live Timing and Video
from road racing events to the Internet, in real time, called Race Tracks Live.
The Live Timing will be streamed so you can follow the action as it happens. You
will be able to see the drivers’ names, numbers and positions; team names; how
many laps up or down a driver is from their starting position; last lap time and
speed; gap and interval; best lap time and speed; and their average time and speed.
This comes across your screen in a concise and easy to read format.
If you want more details on a driver, simply go to their history page. You’ll be able
to see details of every lap they did, including: the actual race time; the driver’s
position, time and speed; their best lap time and speed; and their average time and
speed.
Race Tracks Live also provides Live Timing for Practice or Training Sessions.
Instead of listing the drivers in race order, they are listed in the order of their
numbers. This is a non‐competitive atmosphere which provides the lap number;
race time; time and speed; drivers’ name and class; the drivers’ best laps, time and
speed; and their average time and speed. This information is available to aid
instructors and help drivers learn about racing.
This final piece of Live Timing that Race Tracks Live offers is an on‐board screen for
the iPhone or iPod. It is a simplified version of the Live Timing screen that offers
data to the driver for their vehicle only. They are shown their last lap time and how
far in front or behind the two surrounding vehicles they are. They can also see their
position, how many positions they have moved up or down and the current lap
number.
Finally, in addition to the Live Timing, Race Tracks Live brings you video.
Depending on the event, we will have multiple cameras showing different parts of
the course. You won’t miss a second of the action using Race Tracks Live!
THE LOOSE NUT
This Month’s topic: “Your Car Should Be Ready – Go Rent a Movie” by your “Loose Nut”.
By now, you are all ready for the automotive fun to start. Meetings are happening. Schedules
are set. Metaphorically speaking, we are all dressed up, with no place to go. To ease your
pain and frustration, I present the Loose Nut list of automotive movies, created to provide you with an entertaining array
of entertainment. The other bonus here, we can talk about these movies without the stigma of being labeled as gearheads, motorheads and fossil fuel burning automotive addicts since we are all those things and proud of it.
“Bullitt” – Perhaps not the most exciting movie, but the famous chase scene between the Ford Mustang and the Dodge
Charger is worth watching. It certainly is not high tech. You’ve got to love the scene when the Mustang appears in the
rear view mirror of the Charger. [I always wonder how they make hubcaps fall off when the want them to.] Rumor has
it Steve McQueen did his own driving. Most of you already know that Steve McQueen was quite the motorhead – being
a very good racer with cars as well as motorcycles. “Le Mans” – Lots of views of the intense look on driver’s faces.
Minimal dialogue, very good older racing footage. Don’t forget “The Great Escape”. No a car/bike movie, but the
scenes of the old motorcycle jumping barbed wires fences are great. Again, I believe Steve McQueen did the riding
himself.
“American Graffiti” is a must see. If you have an automotive heartbeat, you’ve got to love the yellow ‘32 Ford fivewindow coupe. Naturally it runs against a ’55 Chevy Belair and (I believe) a 4 headlight ‘58(?) Chevy. I admit, this one
is my favorite (and not just because of a Suzanne Summers in the T-bird). I still want a ’32 five window coupe.
All the “Fast and Furious” movies – Totally ridiculous and unrealistic. But then, who cares??? Slammed imports mixed
with American Muscle, gets me hooked every time. Plus, any movie that can get away with the line “I live my life a
quarter mile at a time” cracks me up. I wonder if anyone told the director that is it extremely difficult to build a ten second or 9 second (quarter mile time) car. Obviously not.
“Gumball Rally” – A bit of a sleeper, never made it big. Based on Cannonball runs that are rumored to still exist. Big
block Shelby Cobra, ’70 Camaro (quite hopped up) and ’71 Ferrari. Nice mix of entertaining driving scenes, mostly on
L.A. streets. Who would believe a Camaro could drive on two wheels for an extended distance?
“Heart Like a Wheel” – Good, primarily accurate story on Shirley Muldowney, one of the first women to break into professional racing. Good story. Good drag racing scenes from the days when drag racing was much more dangerous.
Gutsy move using a pink dragster to poke a stick in the eye of the male dominated top fuel NHRA.
“Blues Brothers” – OK, I admit, not really a “car” movie. Rumored to have wrecked more cars in that movie than any
movie previously made. If you like piles of cop cars, it is a must see. John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd at their best.
Great music. Memorable lines such as “We’re on a mission from god!”, “We’re gett’in the band back together!” and
“We play both kinds of music, Country and Western”.
“Road Warrior” and the Mad Max movies – Ignore the post apocalyptic set up and focus on the array of bizarre automotive machines. A bunch of automotive nutcases must have had fun putting those “cars” together. The star of the show is
a Supercharged Ford Falcon. You’d think all that torque would twist that frame into a pretzel.
Last, but not least, “Cars” (and “Cars 2” – not as good as the first, still worth a watch). Great entertainment for those of
us with childish spirits. I want to live in Radiator Springs, be named Tow Mater and win the Piston Cup in my next life.
Great characters, none of which are human; no wonder the movie is so good. Who would have thought a stock car could
beat a Formula One car on any track?
Out of time, out of space, out of mind. Disconnect your steering wheel, sit on the couch with it enjoying a movie.

Webmaster: Dave Dunning: Website proposal update, gave a hand-out giving a summary of the likes and dislikes of the
current website, and new features that we would like, for example a way to renew membership online.
Motion: To authorize Dave to spend up to $1,650 on our new website and get the process started with Dan Landucci.
MSP: unanimous
To reserve the Domain name costs about $20.00 per year, Dave renewed it for 5 Years, receipt given to treasurer.
GoDaddy Host service is $120.00 per year or $419.00 for 5 years. (on Sale)
Motion: To authorize Dave to renew GoDaddy Host Service for 5 years for $419.00 MSP: unanimous

Our May Event: Oregon Rally group event got moved to our Friday. We have an agreement to have the school on Friday
in South Pit as well as the race, for the whole weekend. They will be gone on Saturday.
Race Team: Julie reported that this Saturday is the Driver instructor seminar at Parker Johnstones Honda, Wilsonville.
8:30 AM. Pizza provided for lunch followed by a track walk hosted by Gary Bockman.
First school is March 23rd and 24th, is up on www.MotorsportsReg.com
Activities Calendar: No report as was discussed at General meeting. Still looking for a volunteer for this position.
Doernbecher: Tracy reported that she will need some help in the organizing of the event. Will make an announcement in
the Auspuff and FaceBook to solicit volunteers. Please contact Tracy if you want to help. What is needed is to get a committee together to help with the Auction, Kids area. Dave will also put something on the Website soon.
Eboard: RATS meeting March 3, Location is Phoenix Inn, Olympia Washington.

Geargrinders: Zack finalized the schedule for Friday night rallies. Working on a budget and will get it to the board next
month.

Publicity: Some discussion on publicity. Lots of good ideas but need some dedicated person to head up.
ROD: Kimberly: Worker orientation coming up; working on a date
Treasurer: Julie Winslow: Worker fund and reimbursements: Receipts are turned in, checks are written to person presenting the receipts. We have people coming in from all areas if over 50 miles away. Need to address our policy on this.
Motion: Adopt the proposed flat rate payouts to the drivers who turns in the gas receipt, give the rate in Cash >50 miles
would be $40.00, > 100 miles is $75.00 > 200 miles is $125.00. No Second. Motion Dies. Tabled for now, committee
will come back with a couple proposals next month
Old Business
Charity Event: Doernbecher discussed above.
Used Radio: Still looking for a buyer for the Radio’s, Waiting to hear back on a tentative buyer at NWMS.
New Business
Mike Tripp submitted his letter of resignation as Board member of CSCC. This moves Donna Adams to a Voting member
of the BOD, welcome Donna; and Mike, you will be missed greatly, thank you for your years of outstanding service to
Cascade Car Club!
Race Fees for 2012: Discussion. Costs went up slightly. $270/260 would show a $10.00 increase. $155 for 2nd
entry ($10 increases over last year)
Motion to raise rates $10.00 for race member/non-member and $10 for 2nd entry MSP: passed with one vote
abstaining.
Business Cards: Proof was sent out to Board members to review. Idea to send a card out with the membership
directory, Steve will include them when he sends them out.
Armadillo, advertising fee discussed. No change to policy but expecting payment on invoice by late spring.
Competition Motorsports, advertising fee discussed. Tracy received merchandise from Ron Brown which will
be used to offset his advertising fee.
Portland Historics fee, owes $500 remaining on the $3,000 invoice that was the stated bill to him for 2012 fee,
Motion: To make fee $3,500 for 2012. MSP unanimous.
NASCAR Fees, last year we charged $6,000.
Motion: To charge the same amount as last year $6000. MSP unanimous.
Donation requests for driver schools, from Columbia County Fair and Rodeo and one from Cooper mountain
Elementary School.
Motion: To give away maximum of 5 track schools for 201.2 MSP unanimous. Tracy will decide whether the
requestor is acceptable to us.
Motion: Limit on cash donations to maximum $1200 for charity for 2012. MSP unanimous.
Chris Evans is giving two rides for Breast Cancer (GASS), and Gary Bockman will give two rides for Doernbecher.
Kai and Gary meeting with Mark Wigginton at PIR for a place to store our radios. (Heated, powered and
locked area) Just need to make sure we have insurance on them.

CSCC General Meeting Minutes

MSP to dispense with the reading of the previous month’s meeting minutes
Scott acknowledged several guests tonight, Welcome!
Guest Speaker: Dan Landucci from PIR’s IT department spoke to us about what’s happening with timing/scoring. Will
be going to live timing from a website! Racetrackslive.com. The new system will also keep a history of your lap times, to
be useful in training. He suggested that we go and look it over and sign up for newsletter updates if you would like.

Auspuff: no report
Activities Calendar: Position is still open: Board meeting is moved to 6PM on Tuesday the 7th in honor of Valentines
Day which falls on our regular meeting day.
Instructor training 8:30 at Parker Johnstone’s Honda in Wilsonville. March 24 is our first school, evening of the 23rd is
worker orientation.

E-Board: Bob Hillison reported RATS (Race Administration Training Seminar) meeting Sat March 3 at 10:00 Olympia

Race Chair: Kai reported need to set race rates first, then will be uploaded to motorsportsreg.com. First Race is in May.
Race Team: All HPDE have been set up in motorsportsreg.com.
Parker Johnstone will host our Instructor training seminar Feb 11 , 8:30 at his Honda Dealership in Wilsonville, after that
Gary Bockman will lead a track walk soon after at PIR. This is for current and new driver instructors.
Saturday March 24 will be our first driver training session of the year.
ROD: Kimberly Kuzma McFarland, Worker orientation Rose Cup room at PIR on March 23, 8AM. Will be mentioned
in our Auspuff.
Website: Dave Dunning is keeping the website updated! We are looking into getting an updated web design. Will bring
a proposal to the next BOD meeting Tuesday. Please let Dave know if you have suggestions for our web site.
Treasurer: Julie Winslow submitted the Treasurer’s report for Year-end 2011. CD was renewed. Good news, we have
received two of the 3 payments from Historics!
OLD BUSINESS:

All Cascade workers and school attendees are welcome to watch Oregon Rally after our first HPDE School
Annual Swap Meet: April 9-15th, looking for more helpers and volunteers. Contact Bret Bienerth if interested. We are
looking for full day helpers 5am-6pm, no half day sign-ups this year.

Noise review board. Gary Bockman notes the City of Portland noise review board is looking for a member of the community to fill a position for a 3 year period.
