President’s Message
Greetings, race family!
It’s Friday night before the Chicane Challenge, and I’m sitting at my desk cooling off after tying up a few loose
ends in the garage. I LITERALLY had to blow the dust off my race tires!
I wanted to share with you a discovery I made today. . .one which started with alarm, slowly turned to puzzlement, and then a good chuckle. I must warn you, though, the discovery happened at work, and involves a very
odd law in Oregon. If you don’t feel like reading an adventure in legal dorkdom, you may want to stop right now
and go play with your Loose Nut.
It all started as I was looking through the part of the Oregon Revised Statutes dealing with vehicles, specifically
Chapter 811: “Rules of the Road for Drivers.” This is the place where you find the laws against reckless driving,
disobeying stop signs, and everyone’s favorite, violating the “basic rule.” Now, I was sitting at my desk, enjoying
the fame, riches and excitement that only lawyerin’ can provide, when something caught my eye, and made my
heart sink:
811.514 Unlawfully operating racing activity vehicle on highway
Wait, what? As many of you know, we have no trailer; therefore we put a few miles on the race car driving on
public roads to the track. I immediately pictured myself pulled over on I-5, late for tech, and having an unwanted
interaction with The Man. How could they do this? Who could be behind such a dastardly piece of legislation?
Then the advocate part of me kicked in. Racing activity vehicle? That sounds a little vague. What do they mean by
that? Well, those legislators love definitions, so that was the next place I looked. . .and there it was:
801.404 “Racing activity vehicle.” [A] motor vehicle that: (1) Is primarily used for racing on a race track
and that has: (a) A bodiless tubular steel chassis that forms the main structural component of the vehicle; (b) High side rails; (c) Integral front and rear rollover tubes; (d) A suspension with both front and
rear double unequal length wishbones and inboard, pushrod operated dampers; and (e) A product
identification number instead of a vehicle identification number; and (2) Is not a replica or an assembled vehicle
OK, that is just plain weird. I mean, most of us know what a tube frame is, and what that suspension setup is, but
what the hell are “high side rails,” and “integral front and rear rollover tubes?” That sounds less like a legal or engineering definition and more like awkward marketing techno-babble. Let’s just run those phrases through
Google, shall we?

This Month’s topic: “Maintenance, There Is Nothing Routine About It” by your Loose Nut.
Recently, my friend (I’ll call him “Mike”) had a wheel bearing “give up” while towing his
mighty race car to the track. This is not the first time this has happened. Flashback to years
ago, while driving home from a race he was on the side of the road, forlornly looking at his
trailer. Naturally, I stopped and asked why the dog-face? His comment was that a wheel bearing died and he was thinking about an appropriate funeral, mentioning something about a fiery
death and alcohol. When I asked how he discovered the offending bearing, he mentioned that a
considerate motorist passed him and yelled through the window “Your wheel is on fire!” My
friend gave him the thumbs up sign to let him know he understood. The motorist sped away, thinking he better get
away from this crazed race car driver. ß Yes, I know that is redundant.
Naturally, I drove home (~ 3 more miles), dropped off my mighty race car and come back and get his car and bring it to
my house as a temporary resting place. Having two race cars there made me feel good. His trailer had two axles.
With no car in the trailer, the one axle could carry the weight without a problem. He took the wheel off and motored
on home. Yes, another considerate motorist, while passing him yelled through the window “Your wheel fell off!”
“Mike” responded with two thumbs up! The motorist sped away like the last one. It all worked out fine and we’ve
been great friends ever since.
That incident has repeated itself in a variety of forms with “Mike” and all the rest of us. The last time this occurred,
“Mike” happily fixed his wheel bearing on a hot day on the side of the highway. Yes some other racers stopped by and
offered help and increased their excellent racing karma. His spouse liked the opportunity to stretch her legs, but
thought his choice of location for taking a break was “not the best”. The only downside is that rumor has it that when
he finished, he accidently left her there, and had to go back. Not recommended.
There are many key things to be learned from incidences like these. A.) Motorheads like us never really about much
unless it applies directly to our race cars. B.) Everything is fixable. C.) Embrace the mechanical altercation, considering it is a rite of passage (to where, we don’t know). D.) Good deeds towards other race car drivers lead to great
friendships. E.) There in nothing routine about routine maintenance, these incidences will continue to occur and we
will continue to laugh about them. F.) Don’t leave passengers at the side of the road.
Why do we continue to (not) do the same things and expect different results? Is it tyranny of the urgent; a form of if
it’s not broken, don’t fix it? Is it analysis paralysis; a form of I can imagine every part on my trailer or tow rig or race
car or street car breaking and I certainly can’t replace everything? Is it stagnant torpor (laziness)? Yes to all of above.
We see this all the time out at the track. I’ve observed three types of racers: 1.) Those that come with exceedingly
well prepared cars, clean, ready to go as soon as they come off trailers that contain tons of spares that they never need
(since they are so well prepared), 2.) Those that do all their maintenance at the track because they like it hectic – it is
all part of the challenge and intrigue of racing and 3.) Those that seem to have angered the car gods in a previous life,
do everything they can to arrive well prepared, but something seems to break every time they go out. The only known
method to appease the car gods is to stop next to a broken down car trailer with the smoking wheel bearing and help
him/her get back on the road. Waving is OK but not good enough. Honking your horn is taboo; it only scares the driver, tempting him/her to hurl the fire extinguisher in his/her hands your way.
Luckily, there is one group of folks that have developed uncanny skills of predicting the future and always seem to
never have metaphorical wheel bearings “go out”. Observe the controlled chaos of a race weekend. So many little
things happen with very little controlled supervision. All the volunteers, I and all racers tip out helmets to you. Waving after a race is nowhere near enough!
In conclusion, race car driver should embrace routine maintenance whenever possible and more importantly embrace
all of the workers every chance you get. The first for good Karma (that word should be Carma…) and the second to let
all of you that run the clubs and work the races know we really appreciate everything you do. Also because you are
clairvoyant and can predict the future and we can learn from you. Thank you all!
Until next time, Loose Nut.
Tales From Old #1
I would hope that most of you remember the start of the Four-Cylinder Sports Car
Club of Oregon, arising from the ashes of the former Sports Car Club of Oregon,
that suffered from internal dissent, and crashed and burned. After that meeting suddenly ended, that led to Carl, Bob White and I, driving back from Salem Oregon
after the meeting, to stop and discuss starting our own club. We did that, and the
next few weeks or months were busy.
With the three of us stopping any and all foreign cars we saw on the road, & talking to them to see if they would be interested in joining a club. We shortly had
rounded up about a dozen or so cars with occupants that were interested and so the
next thing was to have an organizational meeting. One possibility considered was
Don Bells restaurant at the east end of the Ross Island bridge, but parking lot size
and a restaurant seating capacity tended to rule this out. So, I offered use of my
folks house out in Oak Grove along the alignment River.
The evening of the meeting, the street in front of my folks house rapidly filled up
in both directions with parked sports cars, leading to several visits by the police to
see what was going on.. And, as you also might understand, people started arriving
with a six-pack or so of beer. This presented me with a severe diplomatic problem,
as my folks (emphatically) did not drank, and didn't understand anybody who did
(PERIOD)
Well, in spite of this, the meeting went off well, tentative officers were elected, a
committee was set up to draft up a charter, and the group was selected to find a
more permanent meeting place.--- And the subject of the subsequent meeting place
or places probably is a good starting point for another article.
And one final item… After the meeting was over Dick Walker and I carefully policed up the house, collected all used beer bottles and other "wounded" beverage
bottles. Plus other assorted debris left from the meeting. Following this, Dick
Walker and I drove over to Sam Suklis's house and arranged all the bottles [Quite a
bunch-- 30 or so] in a nice straight line along Sam Suklis's front porch. And that is
almost another story itself, considering what Sam did when he came home and
found them.
So, as usual, more later, Charlie Brown [still the old number one]
President’s Message
Continued from front page
Oh my. . .look where we landed. Arielatom.com. Yep, the illegal car in ORS 811.514 is none other than the Atom, and
the vehicle description in the statute was peeled right out of Ariel’s own PR materials. What the. . .really? I know one
guy who drives this car, and I can’t wait to show him this swell anti-Atom law.
But wait. . .there’s more. Ever heard of Brammo Motorsports? They are the company who got the first license to produce the Atom, which was originally conceived in the UK. Where is Brammo located, you ask? Ashland. Ashland, Oregon. A mere two years after Brammo obtained the rights to build the Atom in the United States, the car became illegal
to drive on any public Oregon road with a speed limit over 55 mph. I have no idea who did them this awesome favor,
or why. . .but I do know these cool little machines are now built by a different firm in Virginia.
Crazy tale, right? I wish I had the punchline, but I’m afraid I don’t. I bet someone does though. . .and I’d love to hear
the rest of this story. Drop me a line, anytime!
Until next time. . .drive fast, and take chances!

Goodbyes
We have received notice that Carl Anderson has passed away. He was one of the three original members (Carl, Bob White, and
Charlie Brown) that started the 4-Cylinder Sports car Club of Oregon.
Carl had a cream MG-TD, and was at the final meeting of the even older sports car club of Oregon at the meeting in Salem where
escalating arguments led to its dissolving and on the way back to Portland , Carl, Bob, and Charlie Brown stopped to discuss events.
That is what lead to the 4-Cylinder SCC morphing into the Cascade Sports Car Club of Oregon
We also received the news that Sam Suklis, also passed away recently. Sam was a friend, and another early member the 4-Cylinder
SCC of Oregon in the '50s.
Sam had an MG-TD that he made into a show car with a solid wood fascia and a nearly frame-off restoration and detailing of the
car in the early 50's.
Let us know if you have any other stories or pictures you’d like to get published in the Auspuff.
